The Death of Lazarus
11 There was a man named Lazarus who was sick. He lived in the town of Bethany, where Mary and her sister Martha lived. 2 Mary is the woman who later put perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair. Mary’s brother was Lazarus, the man who was now sick. 3 So Mary and Martha sent someone to tell Jesus, “Lord, the one you love is sick.”
4 When Jesus heard this he said, “This sickness will not end in death. It is for the glory of God. This has happened to bring glory to the Son of God.” 5 Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6 But when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was for two more days. 7 Then Jesus said to his followers, “Let us go back to Judea.”
8 The followers said, “But Teacher, the Jews there tried to kill you with stones. That was only a short time ago. Now you want to go back there?”
9 Jesus answered, “Are there not 12 hours in the day? If anyone walks in the daylight, he will not stumble because he can see by this world’s light. 10 But if anyone walks at night he stumbles because there is no light to help him see.”
11 After Jesus said this, he added, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep. But I am going there to wake him.”
12 The followers said, “But Lord, if he can sleep, he will get well.”
13 Jesus meant that Lazarus was dead. But Jesus’ followers thought that he meant Lazarus was really sleeping. 14 So then Jesus said plainly, “Lazarus is dead. 15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there so that you may believe. But let us go to him now.”
16 Then Thomas (the one called Didymus) said to the other followers, “Let us go, too. We will die with him.”
Jesus in Bethany
17 Jesus arrived in Bethany. There he learned that Lazarus had already been dead and in the tomb for four days. 18 Bethany was about two miles from Jerusalem. 19 Many Jews had come there to comfort Martha and Mary about their brother.
20 Martha heard that Jesus was coming, and she went out to meet him. But Mary stayed at home. 21 Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But I know that even now God will give you anything you ask.”
23 Jesus said, “Your brother will rise and live again.”
24 Martha answered, “I know that he will rise and live again in the resurrection[a] on the last day.”
25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will have life even if he dies. 26 And he who lives and believes in me will never die. Martha, do you believe this?”
27 Martha answered, “Yes, Lord. I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God. You are the One who was coming to the world.”
Jesus Cries
28 After Martha said this, she went back to her sister Mary. She talked to Mary alone. Martha said, “The Teacher is here and he is asking for you.” 29 When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to Jesus. 30 Jesus had not yet come into the town. He was still at the place where Martha had met him. 31 The Jews were with Mary in the house, comforting her. They saw Mary stand and leave quickly. They followed her, thinking that she was going to the tomb to cry there. 32 But Mary went to the place where Jesus was. When she saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”
33 Jesus saw that Mary was crying and that the Jews who came with her were crying, too. Jesus felt very sad in his heart and was deeply troubled. 34 He asked, “Where did you bury him?”
“Come and see, Lord,” they said.
35 Jesus cried.
36 So the Jews said, “See how much he loved him.”
37 But some of them said, “If Jesus healed the eyes of the blind man, why didn’t he keep Lazarus from dying?”
Jesus Raises Lazarus
38 Again Jesus felt very sad in his heart. He came to the tomb. The tomb was a cave with a large stone covering the entrance. 39 Jesus said, “Move the stone away.”
Martha said, “But, Lord, it has been four days since he died. There will be a bad smell.” Martha was the sister of the dead man.
40 Then Jesus said to her, “Didn’t I tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?”
41 So they moved the stone away from the entrance. Then Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I thank you that you heard me. 42 I know that you always hear me. But I said these things because of the people here around me. I want them to believe that you sent me.” 43 After Jesus said this, he cried out in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44 The dead man came out. His hands and feet were wrapped with pieces of cloth, and he had a cloth around his face.
Jesus said to them, “Take the cloth off of him and let him go.”
The Leaders Plan to Kill Jesus
45 There were many Jews who had come to visit Mary. They saw what Jesus did. And many of them believed in him. 46 But some of them went to the Pharisees. They told the Pharisees what Jesus had done. 47 Then the leading priests and Pharisees called a meeting of the Jewish council. They asked, “What should we do? This man is doing many miracles. 48 If we let him continue doing these things, everyone will believe in him. Then the Romans will come and take away our Temple and our nation.”
49 One of the men there was Caiaphas. He was the high priest that year. Caiaphas said, “You people know nothing! 50 It is better for one man to die for the people than for the whole nation to be destroyed. But you don’t realize this.”
51 Caiaphas did not think of this himself. He was high priest that year. So he was really prophesying that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation 52 and for God’s scattered children. This would bring them all together and make them one.
53 That day they started planning to kill Jesus. 54 So Jesus no longer traveled openly among the Jews. He left there and went to a place near the desert. He went to a town called Ephraim and stayed there with his followers.
55 It was almost time for the Jewish Passover Feast. Many from the country went up to Jerusalem before the Passover. They went to do the special things to make themselves pure. 56 The people looked for Jesus. They stood in the Temple and were asking each other, “Is he coming to the Feast? What do you think?” 57 But the leading priests and the Pharisees had given orders about Jesus. They said that if anyone knew where Jesus was, he must tell them. Then they could arrest Jesus.

11 伯大尼村有個名叫拉撒路的人病倒了。伯大尼是瑪麗亞和她姐姐瑪大居住的村莊。 2 就是這個瑪麗亞後來用香膏抹主，又用自己的頭髮擦乾祂的腳，患病的拉撒路是她的弟弟。 3 她們姊妹兩個託人去告訴耶穌，說：「主啊，你所愛的人病了！」
4 耶穌聽見後，說：「這病不會致命，而是為了上帝的榮耀，使祂的兒子藉此得到榮耀。」 5 耶穌一向愛瑪大、瑪麗亞和拉撒路， 6 可是祂聽到拉撒路有病的消息後，仍逗留了兩天， 7 然後才對門徒說：「我們去猶太吧！」
8 門徒說：「老師，猶太人近來想拿石頭打你，你還要去那裡嗎？」
9 耶穌說：「白天不是有十二個小時嗎？人在白天走路，不會跌倒，因為他看得見這世上的光。 10 人在夜間走路，才會跌倒，因為沒有光。」 11 接著耶穌又說：「我們的朋友拉撒路已經睡了，我去叫醒他。」
12 門徒說：「主啊，如果他睡了，肯定會好的。」 13 其實耶穌是指他已經死了，門徒卻以為他真的睡了。
14 於是，耶穌清楚地對他們說：「拉撒路死了。 15 為了你們的緣故，我很高興自己不在那裡，好叫你們信我。現在我們可以去了。」 16 綽號「雙胞胎」的多馬對其他門徒說：「我們也去，好跟祂一塊兒死吧。」
拉撒路死而復活
17 耶穌到了伯大尼，得知拉撒路已經在墳墓裡四天了。 18 伯大尼離耶路撒冷不遠，大約只有三公里的路， 19 很多猶太人來看瑪大和瑪麗亞，為她們兄弟的事來安慰她們。
20 瑪大聽說耶穌來了，就去迎接祂，瑪麗亞卻仍然坐在家裡。 21 瑪大對耶穌說：「主啊，你如果早在這裡，我弟弟就不會死了。 22 就是現在我也知道你無論向上帝求什麼，上帝必定賜給你。」
23 耶穌說：「你弟弟必定復活。」
24 瑪大說：「我知道，在末日復活的時候，他必復活。」
25 耶穌說：「我是復活，我是生命。信我的人雖然死了，也必復活。 26 凡活著信我的人必永遠不死。你相信嗎？」
27 瑪大說：「主啊，我信！我相信你是來到世界的基督，是上帝的兒子。」
28 瑪大說完了，就回去悄悄地告訴她妹妹瑪麗亞：「老師來了，祂叫你去。」
29 瑪麗亞聽了，急忙起來到耶穌那裡。 30 那時，耶穌還沒有進村子，仍在瑪大迎接祂的地方。 31 那些在家裡安慰瑪麗亞的猶太人，見她匆匆忙忙地跑了出去，以為她要去墳墓那裡哭，就跟著出去。
32 瑪麗亞來到耶穌那裡，俯伏在祂腳前說：「主啊，你如果早在這裡，我弟弟就不會死了。」
33 耶穌看見她和陪她來的猶太人都在哭，心中感動，十分難過， 34 便問：「你們把他葬在哪裡了？」
他們答道：「主啊，你來看。」
35 耶穌哭了。
36 猶太人說：「你看！祂多麼愛拉撒路啊！」
37 其中也有人說：「祂既然能醫好瞎眼的人，難道不能叫這個人不死嗎？」
38 耶穌又十分感動地來到墳墓前。那墳墓是個洞，洞口堵著一塊大石頭。
39 耶穌說：「把石頭挪開。」
死者的姐姐瑪大對祂說：「主啊，他死了四天了，已經臭了。」
40 耶穌說：「我不是跟你說過，只要你信，就會看見上帝的榮耀嗎？」
41 於是，他們把石頭挪開，耶穌望著天說：「父啊，我感謝你，因為你已垂聽了我的禱告， 42 我知道你常常垂聽我的禱告。我這樣說是為了周圍站著的眾人，好叫他們相信是你差了我來。」
43 說完，就大聲呼喊：「拉撒路，出來！」 44 那死者就出來了，手腳都纏著布條，臉上也包著布。
耶穌對他們說：「給他解開，讓他走！」
謀害耶穌
45 許多來看瑪麗亞的猶太人看見耶穌所行的事，就信了祂， 46 但也有些人去見法利賽人，把耶穌所行的事告訴他們。 47 祭司長和法利賽人便召開公會會議，說：「這人行了這麼多神蹟，我們該怎麼辦呢？ 48 如果讓祂這樣繼續下去，所有的人都會信祂，那時羅馬人一定會來奪取我們的土地，擄掠我們的人民。」
49 當年擔任大祭司的該亞法對他們說：「你們什麼都不懂！ 50 你們沒有認識到，祂一個人替眾人死，而不是整個民族滅亡，對你們來說更好。」 51 其實這句話不是出於他自己，只因那年他是大祭司，上帝藉著他預言耶穌將要替猶太民族死。 52 祂不單是要替猶太民族死，也要把散居在各處的上帝的兒女聚集在一起。
53 從那天起，他們就計劃要殺害耶穌， 54 所以耶穌不再公開地在猶太人中間露面。祂離開伯大尼，前往靠近曠野的地方，到了以法蓮城，就和門徒住下來。
55 猶太人的逾越節快到了，有很多人從鄉下上耶路撒冷，預備在過節前潔淨自己。 56 他們四處尋找耶穌，又彼此在聖殿裡談論：「你們怎麼想？祂不會來過節吧？」 57 當時祭司長和法利賽人早已下令，如果有人知道耶穌在哪裡，就來報告，他們好去抓祂。

11 A man named Lazarus was sick. He lived at Bethany, the home of Mary and her sister Martha.
2 Mary was the same woman that put oil on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair. It was her brother Lazarus who was sick.
3 So the sisters sent someone to tell Jesus. They said, `Lord, the one whom you love is sick.'
4 Jesus heard the message. He said, `The man is sick, but he will not die from it. But this will show people that God is great, and his Son also.'
5 Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
6 When he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was for two days more.
7 After that, he said to his disciples, `Let us go back again to Judea.'
8 They said, `Master, it is not long since the Jews wanted to kill you with stones. Are you going back there again?'
9 Jesus answered them, `Are there not twelve hours in the day? If a person walks in the daylight, then he will not fall. He can see by the light that is in the world.
10 But if a person walks at night, he will fall because there is no light for him to see.'
11 After he said this, he said also, `Our friend Lazarus is sleeping, but I am going to wake him up.'
12 His disciples said, `Lord, if he is sleeping then he will get well again.'
13 But Jesus meant that Lazarus had died. The disciples thought that Lazarus was sleeping to have a rest.
14 Then Jesus told them plainly. He said, `Lazarus is dead.
15 For your sake I am glad that I was not there. You will really believe in me. But come, let us go to him.'
16 Then Thomas, who was called the Twin, said to the other disciples, `Let us all go and die with Jesus.'
17 When Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had been buried four days.
18 Bethany was only about two miles from Jerusalem.
19 Many Jews had come out to see Martha and Mary. They came to comfort them because their brother had died.
20 As soon as Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him. But Mary just stayed in the house.
21 Martha said to Jesus, `Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.
22 But even yet, I know that God will give you anything that you ask for.'
23 Jesus said, `Your brother will rise again.'
24 Martha said, `I know that he will rise when the dead people are raised up on the last day.'
25 Jesus said, `I am the one who will raise people up and give them life. The person who believes in me will live, even though he has died.
26 Anyone who is living and who believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?'
27 She said, `Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Christ. I believe that you are the Son of God who was to come into the world.'
28 When she had said this, she went back to call her sister. She said quietly, `Mary, the Master has come. He is calling you.'
29 When Mary heard that, she got up quickly and came to him.
30 Jesus was not in the town yet. He was at the same place where Martha had met him.
31 The Jews who were in the house to comfort Mary saw her get up quickly and go out. They went after her. They said, `She is going to the grave to cry.'
32 Mary reached the place where Jesus was. When she saw him, she kneeled down before him and said, `Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.'
33 Jesus saw her crying. He saw the Jews who came with her crying also. Then his heart was troubled very much.
34 `Where have you buried him?' he said. `Come, Lord, and see,' they said.
35 Then Jesus cried.
36 `Look,' the Jews said. `He truly loved him very much!'
37 Then some of them said, `This man made the blind see. Could he not have saved Lazarus from dying?'
38 Jesus' heart was troubled very much again. Then he came to the grave. It was a hole in the side of a large rock. A stone covered the hole.
39 Jesus said, `Take the stone away.' Martha, the sister of the dead man, said, `Lord, he will smell bad by this time. He has been dead four days already.'
40 Jesus said to her, `Did I not tell you that if you believed God you would see that he is great?'
41 So they pushed the stone away from the grave. Jesus looked up and said, `Father, I thank you because you have heard me.
42 I know that you always hear me. But I have said this so that the people who are standing here might believe that you have sent me.'
43 When he had said this, he shouted, `Lazarus, come out!'
44 Out came the dead man! The cloth that they had buried him in was tied around his hands and feet. Another small cloth was tied around his face. Jesus said to the people, `Take off the cloths and free him!'
45 When they saw the things Jesus did, many of the Jews who had come with Mary believed on Him.
46 But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.
47 So the chief priests and the Pharisees met together. They said, `What are we going to do? This man is doing many big works.
48 If we do not stop him, everybody will believe on him. Then the Roman rulers will come and break down our holy town and our nation.'
49 One of them, Caiaphas, was high priest that year. He said to them, `You know nothing.
50 You do not understand. It is better for us if one person dies for the people. Then the whole nation will not be broken down.'
51 He himself did not understand what he was saying. But he was the high priest that year. God spoke through him to say that Jesus should die for those people.
52 Jesus would die, not only for those people, but he would gather together all of God's people who are out in different places.
53 So from that day on they planned to kill Jesus.
54 That is why Jesus did not go among the Jews in the open. But he went to another part of the country, to a town called Ephraim. He stayed there with his disciples.
55 The time for the Passover Feast of the Jews was near. Many people from all around the country went to Jerusalem. They had to make themselves clean according to the law before the Passover Feast.
56 They were looking around for Jesus. As they were standing in the temple they talked to one another. They said, `What do you think? Do you think that he will come to the feast?'
57 Both the chief priest and the Pharisees had told the people, `If any man knows where he is, tell us. We want to catch him.'

11 Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.
2 (It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)
3 Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.
4 When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.
5 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.
6 When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.
7 Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.
8 His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?
9 Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.
10 But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.
11 These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.
12 Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.
13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.
14 Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.
15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.
16 Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.
17 Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.
18 Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:
19 And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.
20 Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.
21 Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
22 But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.
23 Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.
24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.
25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?
27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.
28 And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.
29 As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him.
30 Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.
31 The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there.
32 Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled.
34 And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.
35 Jesus wept.
36 Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!
37 And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?
38 Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.
39 Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.
40 Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?
41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.
42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.
43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.
44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.
45 Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.
46 But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.
47 Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.
48 If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.
49 And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,
50 Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.
51 And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;
52 And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.
53 Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.
54 Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.
55 And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves.
56 Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?
57 Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.
