²⁵ They asked him, ^(A)“Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”

^18 (A)I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. ^(B)And I will put my words in his mouth, and ^(C)he shall speak to them all that I command him.

^20 (A)He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” ²¹ And they asked him, “What then? ^(B)Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you ^(C)the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” ²² So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

A New Prophet like Moses

^15 (A)“The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brothers—it is to him you shall listen—

²⁸ saying, ^(A)“We strictly charged you not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you ^(B)intend to bring this man's blood upon us.”

The Authority of Jesus Challenged

^23 (A)And when he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him ^(B)as he was teaching, and said, ^(C)“By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?”

The Seventy Weeks

^24 (A)“Seventy weeks^[a] are decreed about your people and ^(B)your holy city, to finish ^(C)the transgression, to put an end to sin, ^(D)and to atone for iniquity, ^(E)to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal both vision and prophet, and ^(F)to anoint a most holy place.^{[b] 25 (G)}Know therefore and understand that ^(H)from the going out of the word to restore and ^(I)build Jerusalem to the coming of an ^(J)anointed one, a ^(K)prince, there shall be seven weeks. Then for sixty-two weeks it shall be built again^[c] with squares and moat, ^(L)but in a troubled time. ²⁶ And after the sixty-two weeks, an anointed one shall ^(M)be cut off and shall have nothing. And the people of the prince who is to come ^(N)shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. ^(O)Its^[d] end shall come with a flood, ^(P)and to the end there shall be war. ^(Q)Desolations are decreed.

⁵ On the next day their rulers and elders and scribes gathered together in Jerusalem, ⁶ with ^(A)Annas the high priest and ^(B)Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family. ⁷ And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired, ^(C)“By what power or ^(D)by what name did you do this?”
