Feeding the Five Thousand
6 After this Jesus went to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, also called the Sea of Tiberias.[a] 2 A large crowd kept following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing for the sick. 3 Jesus went up the mountain and sat down there with his disciples. 4 Now the Passover, the festival of the Jews, was near. 5 When he looked up and saw a large crowd coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread for these people to eat?” 6 He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he was going to do. 7 Philip answered him, “Six months’ wages[b] would not buy enough bread for each of them to get a little.” 8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him, 9 “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish. But what are they among so many people?” 10 Jesus said, “Make the people sit down.” Now there was a great deal of grass in the place; so they[c] sat down, about five thousand in all. 11 Then Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated; so also the fish, as much as they wanted. 12 When they were satisfied, he told his disciples, “Gather up the fragments left over, so that nothing may be lost.” 13 So they gathered them up, and from the fragments of the five barley loaves, left by those who had eaten, they filled twelve baskets. 14 When the people saw the sign that he had done, they began to say, “This is indeed the prophet who is to come into the world.”
15 When Jesus realized that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain by himself.
Jesus Walks on the Water
16 When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, 17 got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. 18 The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. 19 When they had rowed about three or four miles,[d] they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were terrified. 20 But he said to them, “It is I;[e] do not be afraid.” 21 Then they wanted to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the land toward which they were going.
The Bread from Heaven
22 The next day the crowd that had stayed on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only one boat there. They also saw that Jesus had not got into the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone. 23 Then some boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.[f] 24 So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum looking for Jesus.
25 When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?” 26 Jesus answered them, “Very truly, I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. 27 Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal.” 28 Then they said to him, “What must we do to perform the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” 30 So they said to him, “What sign are you going to give us then, so that we may see it and believe you? What work are you performing? 31 Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” 32 Then Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is that which[g] comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” 34 They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.”
35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. 36 But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. 37 Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and anyone who comes to me I will never drive away; 38 for I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me. 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. 40 This is indeed the will of my Father, that all who see the Son and believe in him may have eternal life; and I will raise them up on the last day.”
41 Then the Jews began to complain about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They were saying, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” 43 Jesus answered them, “Do not complain among yourselves. 44 No one can come to me unless drawn by the Father who sent me; and I will raise that person up on the last day. 45 It is written in the prophets, ‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me. 46 Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father. 47 Very truly, I tell you, whoever believes has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50 This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”
52 The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” 53 So Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; 55 for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. 56 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. 57 Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live forever.” 59 He said these things while he was teaching in the synagogue at Capernaum.
The Words of Eternal Life
60 When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This teaching is difficult; who can accept it?” 61 But Jesus, being aware that his disciples were complaining about it, said to them, “Does this offend you? 62 Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? 63 It is the spirit that gives life; the flesh is useless. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 64 But among you there are some who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the first who were the ones that did not believe, and who was the one that would betray him. 65 And he said, “For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted by the Father.”
66 Because of this many of his disciples turned back and no longer went about with him. 67 So Jesus asked the twelve, “Do you also wish to go away?” 68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.”[h] 70 Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the twelve? Yet one of you is a devil.” 71 He was speaking of Judas son of Simon Iscariot,[i] for he, though one of the twelve, was going to betray him.

6 (A)Dopo queste cose Gesù se ne andò all’altra riva del mare di Galilea, cioè il mare di Tiberiade. 2 Una gran folla lo seguiva, perché vedeva i segni che egli faceva sugli infermi. 3 Ma Gesù salì sul monte e là si pose a sedere con i suoi discepoli.
4 Or la Pasqua, la festa dei Giudei, era vicina.
5 Gesù dunque, alzati gli occhi e vedendo che una gran folla veniva verso di lui, disse a Filippo: «Dove compreremo del pane perché questa gente abbia da mangiare?» 6 Diceva così per metterlo alla prova; perché sapeva bene quello che stava per fare. 7 Filippo gli rispose: «Duecento denari di pani non bastano perché ciascuno [di loro] ne riceva un pezzetto». 8 Uno dei suoi discepoli, Andrea, fratello di Simon Pietro, gli disse: 9 «C’è qui un ragazzo che ha cinque pani d’orzo e due pesci; ma che cosa sono per così tanta gente?» 10 Gesù disse: «Fateli sedere». C’era molta erba in quel luogo. La gente dunque si sedette, ed erano circa cinquemila uomini. 11 Gesù quindi prese i pani e, dopo aver reso grazie, li distribuì [ai discepoli, e i discepoli] alla gente seduta; lo stesso fece dei pesci, quanti ne vollero. 12 Quando furono saziati, disse ai suoi discepoli: «Raccogliete i pezzi avanzati, perché niente si perda». 13 Essi quindi li raccolsero, e riempirono dodici ceste con i pezzi dei cinque pani d’orzo che erano avanzati a quelli che avevano mangiato.
14 La gente dunque, avendo visto il segno che Gesù[a] aveva fatto, disse: «Questi è certo il profeta che deve venire nel mondo». 15 Gesù, quindi, sapendo che stavano per venire a rapirlo per farlo re, si ritirò di nuovo sul monte, da solo.
Gesù cammina sul mare
16 (B)Quando fu sera, i suoi discepoli scesero al mare 17 e, montati in una barca[b], si diressero all’altra riva, verso Capernaum. Era già buio e Gesù non era ancora[c] venuto presso di loro. 18 Il mare era agitato, perché tirava un forte vento. 19 Come ebbero remato per circa venticinque o trenta stadi[d], videro Gesù camminare sul mare e accostarsi alla barca; ed ebbero paura. 20 Ma egli disse loro: «Sono io[e], non temete». 21 Essi dunque lo vollero prendere nella barca, e subito la barca toccò terra là dove erano diretti.
Gesù, il pane della vita
22 (C)Il giorno seguente, la folla che era rimasta sull’altra riva del mare si rese conto che là non c’era altro che una sola barca [, quella in cui erano saliti i discepoli,] e che Gesù non vi era salito con i suoi discepoli, ma che i discepoli erano partiti da soli. 23 Altre barche, intanto, erano giunte da Tiberiade, vicino al luogo dove avevano mangiato il pane dopo che il Signore aveva reso grazie. 24 La folla, dunque, quando ebbe visto che Gesù non era là, e nemmeno i suoi discepoli, montò [anch’essa] in quelle barche e andò a Capernaum in cerca di Gesù. 25 Trovatolo di là dal mare, gli dissero: «Rabbì, quando sei giunto qui?» 26 Gesù rispose loro: «In verità, in verità vi dico che voi mi cercate non perché avete visto dei segni, ma perché avete mangiato dei pani e siete stati saziati. 27 Adoperatevi non per il cibo che perisce, ma per il cibo che dura in vita eterna, e che il Figlio dell’uomo vi darà; poiché su di lui il Padre, cioè Dio, ha posto il proprio sigillo». 28 Essi dunque gli dissero: «Che dobbiamo fare per compiere le opere di Dio?» 29 Gesù rispose loro: «Questa è l’opera di Dio: che crediate in colui che egli ha mandato». 30 Allora essi gli dissero: «Quale segno fai, dunque, affinché lo vediamo e ti crediamo? Che operi? 31 I nostri padri mangiarono la manna nel deserto, come è scritto:
“Egli diede loro da mangiare del pane venuto dal cielo”[f]».
32 Gesù disse loro: «In verità, in verità vi dico che non Mosè vi ha dato il pane che viene dal cielo, ma il Padre mio vi dà il vero pane che viene dal cielo. 33 Poiché il pane di Dio è quello che scende dal cielo, e dà vita al mondo».
34 Essi quindi gli dissero: «Signore, dacci sempre di questo pane».
35 Gesù disse loro: «Io sono il pane della vita; chi viene a me non avrà più fame e chi crede in me non avrà mai più sete. 36 Ma io ve l’ho detto: “Voi {mi} avete visto, eppure non credete!” 37 Tutti quelli che il Padre mi dà verranno a me; e colui che viene a me, non lo caccerò fuori; 38 perché sono disceso dal cielo non per fare la mia volontà, ma la volontà di colui che mi ha mandato. 39 Questa è la volontà di colui che mi ha mandato[g]: che io non perda nessuno di quelli che egli mi ha dati, ma che li risusciti nell’ultimo giorno. 40 Poiché questa è la volontà del Padre mio[h]: che chiunque contempla il Figlio e crede in lui, abbia vita eterna; e io lo risusciterò nell’ultimo giorno».
41 Perciò i Giudei mormoravano di lui perché aveva detto: «Io sono il pane che è disceso dal cielo». 42 Dicevano: «Non è costui Gesù, il figlio di Giuseppe, del quale conosciamo il padre e la madre? Come mai ora dice[i]: “Io sono disceso dal cielo”?»
43 Gesù [allora] rispose loro: «Non mormorate tra di voi. 44 Nessuno può venire a me se il Padre che mi ha mandato non lo attira; e io lo risusciterò nell’ultimo giorno. 45 È scritto nei profeti:
“Saranno tutti istruiti da Dio”[j]. Chiunque [perciò] ha udito il Padre[k] e ha imparato da lui, viene a me. 46 Perché nessuno ha visto il Padre, se non colui che è da Dio; egli ha visto il Padre. 47 In verità, in verità vi dico: chi crede [in me] ha vita eterna. 48 Io sono il pane della vita. 49 I vostri padri mangiarono la manna nel deserto e morirono. 50 Questo è il pane che discende dal cielo, affinché chi ne mangia non muoia. 51 Io sono il pane vivente che è disceso dal cielo; se uno mangia di questo pane vivrà in eterno; e il pane che io darò per la vita del mondo è la mia carne[l]».
52 I Giudei dunque discutevano tra di loro, dicendo: «Come può costui darci da mangiare la sua carne?»
53 Perciò Gesù disse loro: «In verità, in verità vi dico che se non mangiate la carne del Figlio dell’uomo e non bevete il suo sangue, non avete vita in voi. 54 Chi mangia la mia carne e beve il mio sangue ha vita eterna; e io lo risusciterò nell’ultimo giorno. 55 Perché la mia carne è vero cibo e il mio sangue è vera bevanda[m]. 56 Chi mangia la mia carne e beve il mio sangue dimora in me, e io in lui. 57 Come il Padre vivente mi ha mandato e io vivo a motivo del Padre, così chi mi mangia vivrà anch’egli a motivo di me. 58 Questo è il pane che è disceso dal cielo; non come quello che hanno mangiato i padri[n] e sono morti; chi mangia di questo pane vivrà in eterno».
59 Queste cose disse Gesù, insegnando nella sinagoga di Capernaum.
Gesù mette alla prova la lealtà dei discepoli
60 (D)Perciò molti dei suoi discepoli, dopo aver udito, dissero: «Questo parlare è duro; chi può ascoltarlo?» 61 Gesù, sapendo dentro di sé che i suoi discepoli mormoravano di ciò, disse loro: «Questo vi scandalizza? 62 E che sarebbe[o] se vedeste il Figlio dell’uomo ascendere dov’era prima? 63 È lo Spirito che vivifica; la carne non è di alcuna utilità; le parole che vi ho dette[p] sono spirito e vita. 64 Ma tra di voi ci sono alcuni che non credono». Gesù sapeva infatti fin dal principio chi erano quelli che non credevano e chi era colui che lo avrebbe tradito. 65 E diceva: «Per questo vi ho detto che nessuno può venire a me se non gli è dato dal Padre [mio]».
66 Da allora molti dei suoi discepoli si tirarono indietro e non andavano più con lui.
67 Perciò Gesù disse ai dodici: «Non volete andarvene anche voi?» 68 Simon Pietro [allora] gli rispose: «Signore, da chi andremmo noi? Tu hai parole di vita eterna! 69 E noi abbiamo creduto e abbiamo conosciuto che tu sei il Santo di Dio[q]». 70 Gesù rispose loro: «Non ho io scelto voi dodici? Eppure uno di voi è un diavolo!» 71 Egli parlava di Giuda, figlio di Simone Iscariota[r], perché questi, uno dei dodici, stava per tradirlo.

Die Speisung der Fünftausend
6 Danach fuhr Jesus über den See von Galiläa bei Tiberias.
2 Und es folgte ihm eine große Volksmenge nach, weil sie seine Zeichen sahen, die er an den Kranken tat.
3 Jesus aber ging auf den Berg und saß dort mit seinen Jüngern beisammen.
4 Es war aber das Passah nahe, das Fest der Juden.
5 Da nun Jesus die Augen erhob und sah, dass eine große Volksmenge zu ihm kam, sprach er zu Philippus: Wo kaufen wir Brot, damit diese essen können?
6 (Das sagte er aber, um ihn auf die Probe zu stellen, denn er selbst wusste wohl, was er tun wollte.)
7 Philippus antwortete ihm: Für 200 Denare Brot reicht nicht aus für sie, dass jeder von ihnen auch nur ein wenig bekommt!
8 Da sprach einer von seinen Jüngern, Andreas, der Bruder des Simon Petrus, zu ihm:
9 Es ist ein Knabe hier, der hat fünf Gerstenbrote und zwei Fische; doch was ist das für so viele?
10 Jesus aber sprach: Lasst die Leute sich setzen! Es war nämlich viel Gras an dem Ort. Da setzten sich die Männer; es waren etwa 5 000.
11 Und Jesus nahm die Brote, sagte Dank und teilte sie den Jüngern aus, die Jünger aber denen, die sich gesetzt hatten; ebenso auch von den Fischen, so viel sie wollten.
12 Und als sie gesättigt waren, sprach er zu seinen Jüngern: Sammelt die übrig gebliebenen Brocken, damit nichts verdirbt!
13 Da sammelten sie und füllten zwölf Körbe mit Brocken von den fünf Gerstenbroten, die denen übrig geblieben waren, welche gegessen hatten.
14 Als nun die Leute das Zeichen sahen, das Jesus getan hatte, sprachen sie: Das ist wahrhaftig der Prophet, der in die Welt kommen soll!
15 Da nun Jesus erkannte, dass sie kommen würden, um ihn mit Gewalt zum König zu machen, zog er sich wiederum auf den Berg zurück, er allein.
Jesus geht auf dem See
16 Als es aber Abend geworden war, gingen seine Jünger hinab an den See,
17 und sie stiegen in das Schiff und fuhren über den See nach Kapernaum. Und es war schon finster geworden, und Jesus war nicht zu ihnen gekommen.
18 Und der See ging hoch, da ein starker Wind wehte.
19 Als sie nun ungefähr 25 oder 30 Stadien gerudert hatten, sahen sie Jesus auf dem See gehen und sich dem Schiff nähern; und sie fürchteten sich.
20 Er aber sprach zu ihnen: Ich bin"s, fürchtet euch nicht!
21 Da wollten sie ihn in das Schiff nehmen, und sogleich war das Schiff am Land, wohin sie fahren wollten.
Das Volk sucht nach Äußerlichem, nicht nach dem wahren Heil
22 Am folgenden Tag, als die Volksmenge, die am jenseitigen Ufer des Sees stand, gesehen hatte, dass kein anderes Schiff dort war, als nur das eine, in welches seine Jünger gestiegen waren, und dass Jesus nicht mit seinen Jüngern in das Schiff gestiegen war, sondern dass seine Jünger allein abgefahren waren,
23 (es kamen aber andere Schiffe von Tiberias nahe an den Ort, wo sie das Brot gegessen hatten nach der Danksagung des Herrn)
24 — da also die Volksmenge sah, dass Jesus nicht dort war, auch nicht seine Jünger, stiegen auch sie in die Schiffe und kamen nach Kapernaum und suchten Jesus.
25 Und als sie ihn am anderen Ufer des Sees fanden, sprachen sie zu ihm: Rabbi, wann bist du hierher gekommen?
26 Jesus antwortete ihnen und sprach: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Ihr sucht mich nicht deshalb, weil ihr Zeichen gesehen, sondern weil ihr von den Broten gegessen habt und satt geworden seid.
27 Wirkt nicht [für] die Speise, die vergänglich ist[a], sondern [für] die Speise, die bis ins ewige Leben bleibt, die der Sohn des Menschen euch geben wird; denn diesen hat Gott, der Vater, bestätigt[b]!
28 Da sprachen sie zu ihm: Was sollen wir tun, um die Werke Gottes zu wirken[c]?
29 Jesus antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Das ist das Werk Gottes, dass ihr an den glaubt, den er gesandt hat.
30 Da sprachen sie zu ihm: Was tust du denn für ein Zeichen, damit wir sehen und dir glauben? Was wirkst du?
31 Unsere Väter haben das Manna gegessen in der Wüste, wie geschrieben steht: »Brot aus dem Himmel gab er ihnen zu essen«.[d]
Jesus Christus – das Brot des Lebens
32 Da sprach Jesus zu ihnen: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Nicht Mose hat euch das Brot aus dem Himmel gegeben, sondern mein Vater gibt euch das wahre Brot aus dem Himmel.
33 Denn das Brot Gottes ist derjenige, der aus dem Himmel herabkommt und der Welt Leben gibt.
34 Da sprachen sie zu ihm: Herr, gib uns allezeit dieses Brot!
35 Jesus aber sprach zu ihnen: Ich bin das Brot des Lebens.[e] Wer zu mir kommt, den wird nicht hungern, und wer an mich glaubt, den wird niemals dürsten.
36 Aber ich habe es euch gesagt, dass ihr mich gesehen habt und doch nicht glaubt.
37 Alles, was mir der Vater gibt, wird zu mir kommen; und wer zu mir kommt, den werde ich nicht hinausstoßen.
38 Denn ich bin aus dem Himmel herabgekommen, nicht damit ich meinen Willen tue, sondern den Willen dessen, der mich gesandt hat.
39 Und das ist der Wille des Vaters, der mich gesandt hat, dass ich nichts verliere von allem, was er mir gegeben hat, sondern dass ich es auferwecke am letzten Tag.
40 Das ist aber der Wille dessen, der mich gesandt hat, dass jeder, der den Sohn sieht und an ihn glaubt, ewiges Leben hat; und ich werde ihn auferwecken am letzten Tag.
41 Da murrten die Juden über ihn, weil er gesagt hatte: Ich bin das Brot, das aus dem Himmel herabgekommen ist,
42 und sie sprachen: Ist dieser nicht Jesus, der Sohn Josephs, dessen Vater und Mutter wir kennen? Wie kann dieser denn sagen: Ich bin aus dem Himmel herabgekommen?
43 Da antwortete Jesus und sprach zu ihnen: Murrt nicht untereinander!
44 Niemand kann zu mir kommen, es sei denn, dass ihn der Vater zieht, der mich gesandt hat; und ich werde ihn auferwecken am letzten Tag.
45 Es steht geschrieben in den Propheten: »Und sie werden alle von Gott gelehrt sein«.[f] Jeder nun, der vom Vater gehört und gelernt hat, kommt zu mir.
46 Nicht, dass jemand den Vater gesehen hätte; nur der, welcher von Gott ist, der hat den Vater gesehen.
47 Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Wer an mich glaubt, der hat ewiges Leben.
48 Ich bin das Brot des Lebens.
49 Eure Väter haben das Manna gegessen in der Wüste und sind gestorben;
50 dies ist das Brot, das aus dem Himmel herabkommt, damit, wer davon isst, nicht stirbt.
51 Ich bin das lebendige Brot, das aus dem Himmel herabgekommen ist. Wenn jemand von diesem Brot isst, so wird er leben in Ewigkeit. Das Brot aber, das ich geben werde, ist mein Fleisch, das ich geben werde für das Leben der Welt.
52 Da stritten die Juden untereinander und sprachen: Wie kann dieser uns [sein] Fleisch zu essen geben?
53 Darum sprach Jesus zu ihnen: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Wenn ihr nicht das Fleisch des Menschensohnes esst und sein Blut trinkt, so habt ihr kein Leben in euch.
54 Wer mein Fleisch isst und mein Blut trinkt, der hat ewiges Leben, und ich werde ihn auferwecken am letzten Tag.
55 Denn mein Fleisch ist wahrhaftig Speise, und mein Blut ist wahrhaftig Trank.
56 Wer mein Fleisch isst und mein Blut trinkt, der bleibt in mir und ich in ihm.
57 Wie mich der lebendige Vater gesandt hat und ich um des Vaters willen lebe, so wird auch der, welcher mich isst, um meinetwillen leben.
58 Dies ist das Brot, das aus dem Himmel herabgekommen ist; es ist nicht wie das Manna, das eure Väter gegessen haben, und sind gestorben; wer dieses Brot isst, der wird leben in Ewigkeit!
59 Dies sprach er, als er in der Synagoge von Kapernaum lehrte.
Jesu Worte erzeugen eine Scheidung unter den Jüngern
60 Viele nun von seinen Jüngern, die das hörten, sprachen: Das ist eine harte Rede! Wer kann sie hören?
61 Da aber Jesus bei sich selbst erkannte, dass seine Jünger darüber murrten, sprach er zu ihnen: Ist euch das ein Ärgernis?
62 Wie nun, wenn ihr den Sohn des Menschen dorthin auffahren seht, wo er zuvor war?
63 Der Geist ist es, der lebendig macht, das Fleisch nützt gar nichts. Die Worte, die ich zu euch rede, sind Geist und sind Leben.
64 Aber es sind etliche unter euch, die nicht glauben. Denn Jesus wusste von Anfang an, wer die waren, die nicht glaubten, und wer ihn verraten würde.
65 Und er sprach: Darum habe ich euch gesagt: Niemand kann zu mir kommen, es sei ihm denn von meinem Vater gegeben!
66 Aus diesem Anlass zogen sich viele seiner Jünger zurück und gingen nicht mehr mit ihm.
67 Da sprach Jesus zu den Zwölfen: Wollt ihr nicht auch weggehen?
68 Da antwortete ihm Simon Petrus: Herr, zu wem sollen wir gehen? Du hast Worte ewigen Lebens;
69 und wir haben geglaubt und erkannt, dass du der Christus bist, der Sohn des lebendigen Gottes!
70 Jesus antwortete ihnen: Habe ich nicht euch Zwölf erwählt? Und doch ist einer von euch ein Teufel!
71 Er redete aber von Judas, Simons Sohn, dem Ischariot, denn dieser sollte ihn verraten, er, der einer von den Zwölfen war.

6 Jézus ezután elment a Galileai-tengernek, a Tibériás tavának túlsó partjára.
2 Nagy sokaság követte őt, mert látták azokat a jeleket, amelyeket a betegeken tett.
3 Jézus pedig felment a hegyre, és ott leült a tanítványaival együtt.
4 Közel volt a húsvét, a zsidók ünnepe.
5 Amikor Jézus körültekintett és látta, hogy nagy sokaság közeledik hozzá, így szólt Fülöpnek: "Honnan vegyünk kenyeret, hogy ezek ehessenek?"
6 Ezt pedig azért kérdezte tőle, hogy próbára tegye, mert ő már tudta, mit fog tenni.
7 Fülöp így válaszolt neki: "Kétszáz dénár árú kenyér sem elég nekik, hogy mindenki kapjon valami keveset."
8 Egyik tanítványa, András, a Simon Péter testvére így szólt hozzá:
9 "Van itt egy gyermek, akinél van öt árpakenyér és két hal, de mi ez ennyinek?"
10 Jézus ezt mondta: "Ültessétek le az embereket." Nagy fű volt azon a helyen. Letelepedtek tehát a férfiak, szám szerint mintegy ötezren.
11 Jézus pedig vette a kenyereket, hálát adott, és kiosztotta az ott ülőknek; ugyanúgy osztott a halakból is, amennyit kívántak.
12 Amikor pedig jóllaktak, így szólt tanítványaihoz: "Szedjétek össze a felesleges darabokat, hogy semmi ne menjen kárba."
13 Összeszedték tehát, és tizenkét kosarat töltöttek meg az öt árpakenyérből való darabokkal, amelyek feleslegesek voltak azoknak, akik ettek.
14 Az emberek, látva a jelt, amelyet tett, ezt mondták: "Ez valóban az a próféta, akinek el kellett jönnie a világba."
15 Amikor pedig Jézus észrevette, hogy érte akarnak jönni, és el akarják ragadni, hogy királlyá tegyék, visszavonult ismét a hegyre egymagában.

16 Estefelé lementek tanítványai a tengerhez,
17 hajóra szálltak, és átmentek a tenger túlsó partjára, Kapernaumba. Sötét volt már, és még mindig nem ment oda hozzájuk Jézus;
18 a tenger pedig háborgott, mert nagy szél fújt.
19 Közben eljutottak mintegy huszonöt vagy harminc futamnyira, amikor meglátták, hogy Jézus a tengeren jár, és közeledik a hajóhoz. Megrémültek,
20 de Jézus megszólalt: "Én vagyok, ne féljetek!"
21 Ekkor fel akarták venni a hajóra, de a hajó egyszeriben odaért a partra, ahová tartottak.
A sokaság mennyei kenyeret kér
22 Másnap a tenger túlsó partján maradt sokaság megállapította, hogy ott nem volt más hajó, csak egy, és hogy Jézus nem szállt be tanítványaival együtt abba a hajóba, hanem csupán a tanítványai mentek el.
23 Ellenben Tibériásból jöttek hajók, annak a helynek a közelébe, ahol a kenyeret ették, miután hálát adott az Úr.
24 Amikor tehát látta a sokaság, hogy sem Jézus, sem a tanítványai nincsenek ott, beszálltak a hajókba, elmentek Kapernaumba, és keresték Jézust.
25 Amikor megtalálták a tenger túlsó partján, megkérdezték tőle: "Mester, mikor jöttél ide?"
26 Jézus ezt válaszolta nekik: "Bizony, bizony, mondom néktek, nem azért kerestek engem, mert jeleket láttatok, hanem azért, mert ettetek a kenyerekből és jóllaktatok.
27 Ne veszendő eledelért fáradozzatok, hanem az örök életre megmaradó eledelért, amelyet az Emberfia ad majd nektek, mert őt pecsétjével igazolta az Isten."
28 Ekkor megkérdezték tőle: "Mit tegyünk, hogy Istennek tetsző dolgokat cselekedjünk?"
29 Jézus ezt felelte nekik: "Az az Istennek tetsző dolog, hogy higgyetek abban, akit ő küldött."
30 Erre megkérdezték: "És te milyen jelt mutatsz, hogy miután láttuk, higgyünk neked? Mit cselekszel?
31 Atyáink a mannát ették a pusztában, ahogyan meg van írva: Mennyei kenyeret adott nekik enni."
32 Jézus pedig így válaszolt nekik: "Bizony, bizony, mondom néktek, nem Mózes adta nektek a mennyei kenyeret, hanem az én Atyám adja nektek az igazi mennyei kenyeret.
33 Mert az Isten kenyere a mennyből száll le, és életet ad a világnak."
34 Erre ezt mondták neki: "Uram, add nekünk mindig ezt a kenyeret!"
Jézus az élet kenyere
35 Jézus azt mondta nekik: "Én vagyok az élet kenyere: aki énhozzám jön, nem éhezik meg, és aki énbennem hisz, nem szomjazik meg soha.
36 De megmondtam nektek: láttatok ugyan engem, és mégsem hisztek.
37 Akit nekem ad az Atya, az mind énhozzám jön, és aki énhozzám jön, azt én nem küldöm el;
38 mert nem azért szálltam le a mennyből, hogy a magam akaratát tegyem, hanem hogy annak az akaratát, aki elküldött engem.
39 Annak pedig, aki elküldött engem, az az akarata, hogy abból, amit nekem adott, semmit se veszítsek el, hanem feltámasszam az utolsó napon.
40 Mert az én Atyámnak az az akarata, hogy annak, aki látja a Fiút, és hisz benne, örök élete legyen; én pedig feltámasztom őt az utolsó napon."
41 A zsidók ekkor zúgolódni kezdtek ellene, mert ezt mondta: "Én vagyok az a kenyér, amely a mennyből szállott le" -
42 és azt kérdezték: "Nem Jézus ez, a József fia, akinek ismerjük apját és anyját? Akkor hogyan mondhatja: A mennyből szálltam le?"
43 Jézus így válaszolt nekik: "Ne zúgolódjatok egymás között!
44 Senki sem jöhet énhozzám, ha nem vonzza őt az Atya, aki elküldött engem. Én pedig feltámasztom az utolsó napon.
45 Meg van írva a prófétáknál: És mindnyájan Istentől tanítottak lesznek. Aki az Atyától hallott és tanult, az mind énhozzám jön.
46 Nem mintha bárki látta volna az Atyát: csak aki az Istentől van, az látta az Atyát.
47 Bizony, bizony, mondom néktek: aki hisz, annak örök élete van.
48 Én vagyok az élet kenyere.
49 Atyáitok a mannát ették a pusztában, mégis meghaltak.
50 De ez az a kenyér, amely a mennyből szállt le, hogy aki eszik belőle, meg ne haljon:
51 Én vagyok az az élő kenyér, amely a mennyből szállt le: ha valaki eszik ebből a kenyérből, élni fog örökké, mert az a kenyér, amelyet én adok oda a világ életéért, az az én testem."

52 A zsidók erre vitatkozni kezdtek egymással, és ezt kérdezték: "Hogyan adhatná ez nekünk a testét eledelül?"
53 Jézus így szólt hozzájuk: "Bizony, bizony, mondom néktek: ha nem eszitek az Emberfia testét, és nem isszátok a vérét, nincsen élet tibennetek.
54 Aki eszi az én testemet, és issza az én véremet, annak örök élete van, és én feltámasztom őt az utolsó napon.
55 Mert az én testem igazi étel, és az én vérem igazi ital.
56 Aki eszi az én testemet, és issza az én véremet, az énbennem marad, és én őbenne.
57 Ahogyan engem az élő Atya küldött el, és én az Atya által élek, úgy az is, aki engem eszik, élni fog énáltalam.

A tanítványok zúgolódása és Péter vallástétele(C)
60 Tanítványai közül sokan, amikor ezt hallották, így szóltak: "Kemény beszéd ez: ki hallgathatja őt?"
61 Mivel pedig Jézus magától is tudta, hogy ezért zúgolódnak tanítványai, így szólt hozzájuk: "Ez megbotránkoztat titeket?
62 Hát ha majd meglátjátok az Emberfiát felmenni oda, ahol előzőleg volt?
63 A lélek az, aki életre kelt, a test nem használ semmit: azok a beszédek, amelyeket én mondtam nektek: lélek és élet.
64 De vannak közöttetek néhányan, akik nem hisznek." Mert Jézus kezdettől fogva tudta, hogy kik azok, akik nem hisznek, és ki az, aki el fogja árulni őt.
65 És így folytatta: "Ezért mondtam nektek, hogy senki sem jöhet hozzám, ha nem adta meg ezt neki az Atya."
66 Ettől fogva tanítványai közül sokan visszavonultak, és nem jártak vele többé.
67 Jézus ekkor megkérdezte a tizenkettőtől: "Vajon ti is el akartok menni?"
68 Simon Péter így felelt: "Uram, kihez mennénk? Örök élet beszéde van nálad.
69 És mi hisszük és tudjuk, hogy te vagy az Istennek Szentje."
70 Jézus így válaszolt nekik: "Nem én választottalak-e ki titeket, a tizenkettőt? Egy közületek mégis ördög."
71 Júdás Iskáriótesre, Simon fiára mondta ezt, mert ez akarta őt elárulni, pedig egy volt a tizenkettő közül.
