4 (A)And he had to pass through Samaria. 5 So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field (B)that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob's well was there; so Jesus, (C)wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour.[a]
7 A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, (D)“Give me a drink.” 8 (For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.) 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” ((E)For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you (F)living water.” 11 The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? 12 (G)Are you greater than our father Jacob? (H)He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.” 13 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14 but (I)whoever drinks of the water that I will give him (J)will never be thirsty again.[b] The water that I will give him will become (K)in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” 15 The woman said to him, “Sir, (L)give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.”
16 Jesus said to her, “Go, (M)call your husband, and come here.” 17 The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.” 19 The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that (N)you are (O)a prophet. 20 (P)Our fathers worshiped on (Q)this mountain, but you say that (R)in Jerusalem is (S)the place where people ought to worship.” 21 Jesus said to her, (T)“Woman, believe me, (U)the hour is coming when (V)neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22 (W)You worship what you do not know; (X)we worship what we know, for (Y)salvation is (Z)from the Jews. 23 But (AA)the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father (AB)in spirit and (AC)truth, for the Father (AD)is seeking such people to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” 25 The woman said to him, “I know that (AE)Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, (AF)he will tell us all things.” 26 Jesus said to her, (AG)“I who speak to you am he.”
27 Just then (AH)his disciples came back. They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but no one said, “What do you seek?” or, “Why are you talking with her?” 28 So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man (AI)who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?” 30 They went out of the town and were coming to him.
31 Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, saying, (AJ)“Rabbi, eat.” 32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” 33 So the disciples said to one another, (AK)“Has anyone brought him something to eat?” 34 Jesus said to them, (AL)“My food is (AM)to do the will of him who sent me and (AN)to accomplish his work. 35 Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that (AO)the fields are white for harvest. 36 Already the one who reaps is receiving wages and gathering fruit for eternal life, so that (AP)sower and (AQ)reaper (AR)may rejoice together. 37 For here the saying holds true, (AS)‘One sows and another reaps.’ 38 I sent you to reap (AT)that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, (AU)and you have entered into their labor.”
39 Many Samaritans (AV)from that town believed in him (AW)because of (AX)the woman's testimony, “He told me all that I ever did.” 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days. 41 And many more believed (AY)because of his word. 42 They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, (AZ)and we know that this is indeed (BA)the Savior (BB)of the world.”

4 Now he had to go through Samaria.(A) 5 So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph.(B) 6 Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.
7 When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?”(C) 8 (His disciples had gone into the town(D) to buy food.)
9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan(E) woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.[a])
10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”(F)
11 “Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well(G) and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?”
13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.(H) Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water(I) welling up to eternal life.”(J)
15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty(K) and have to keep coming here to draw water.”
16 He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”
17 “I have no husband,” she replied.
Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband. 18 The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”
19 “Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet.(L) 20 Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain,(M) but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.”(N)
21 “Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming(O) when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.(P) 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know;(Q) we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.(R) 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come(S) when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit(T) and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit,(U) and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”
25 The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ)(V) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”
26 Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.”(W)
The Disciples Rejoin Jesus
27 Just then his disciples returned(X) and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, “What do you want?” or “Why are you talking with her?”
28 Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did.(Y) Could this be the Messiah?”(Z) 30 They came out of the town and made their way toward him.
31 Meanwhile his disciples urged him, “Rabbi,(AA) eat something.”
32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat(AB) that you know nothing about.”
33 Then his disciples said to each other, “Could someone have brought him food?”
34 “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will(AC) of him who sent me and to finish his work.(AD) 35 Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.(AE) 36 Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests(AF) a crop for eternal life,(AG) so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together. 37 Thus the saying ‘One sows and another reaps’(AH) is true. 38 I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor.”
Many Samaritans Believe
39 Many of the Samaritans from that town(AI) believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.”(AJ) 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days. 41 And because of his words many more became believers.
42 They said to the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.”(AK)

Wives Provided for the Tribe of Benjamin
21 Now the men of Israel had sworn (A)at Mizpah, “No one of us shall give his daughter in marriage to Benjamin.” 2 And the people came to (B)Bethel and sat there till evening before God, and they lifted up their voices and wept bitterly. 3 And they said, “O Lord, the God of Israel, why has this happened in Israel, that today there should be one tribe lacking in Israel?” 4 And the next day the people rose early and (C)built there an altar and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. 5 And the people of Israel said, “Which of all the tribes of Israel did not come up in the assembly to the Lord?” (D)For they had taken a great oath concerning him who did not come up to the Lord to Mizpah, saying, “He shall surely be put to death.” 6 And the people of Israel (E)had compassion for Benjamin their brother and said, “One tribe is cut off from Israel this day. 7 (F)What shall we do for wives for those who are left, since we have sworn by the Lord that we will not give them any of our daughters for wives?”
8 And they said, “What one is there of the tribes of Israel that did not come up to the Lord to Mizpah?” And behold, no one had come to the camp from (G)Jabesh-gilead, to the assembly. 9 For when the people were mustered, behold, not one of the inhabitants of (H)Jabesh-gilead was there. 10 So the congregation sent 12,000 of their bravest men there and commanded them, (I)“Go and strike the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead with the edge of the sword; also the women and the little ones. 11 This is what you shall do: (J)every male and every woman that has lain with a male you shall devote to destruction.” 12 And they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead 400 young virgins who had not known a man by lying with him, and they brought them to the camp at (K)Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.
13 Then the whole congregation sent word to the people of Benjamin who were at the (L)rock of Rimmon and (M)proclaimed peace to them. 14 And Benjamin returned at that time. And they gave them the women whom they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh-gilead, but they were not enough for them. 15 And the people (N)had compassion on Benjamin because the Lord had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.
16 Then the elders of the congregation said, (O)“What shall we do for wives for those who are left, since the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?” 17 And they said, “There must be an inheritance for the survivors of Benjamin, that a tribe not be blotted out from Israel. 18 Yet we cannot give them wives from our daughters.” (P)For the people of Israel had sworn, “Cursed be he who gives a wife to Benjamin.” 19 So they said, “Behold, there is the yearly feast of the Lord at Shiloh, which is north of Bethel, on the east of (Q)the highway that goes up from Bethel to Shechem, and south of Lebonah.” 20 And they commanded the people of Benjamin, saying, “Go and lie in ambush in the vineyards 21 and watch. If the daughters of Shiloh come out to (R)dance in the dances, then come out of the vineyards and snatch each man his wife from the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin. 22 And when their fathers or their brothers come to complain to us, we will say to them, ‘Grant them graciously to us, because we did not take for each man of them his wife in battle, neither did you give them to them, else you would now be guilty.’” 23 And the people of Benjamin did so and took their wives, according to their number, from the dancers whom they carried off. Then they went and returned to their inheritance (S)and rebuilt the towns and lived in them. 24 And the people of Israel departed from there at that time, every man to his tribe and family, and they went out from there every man to his inheritance.
25 (T)In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.
Naomi Widowed
1 In the days (U)when the judges ruled there was (V)a famine in the land, and a man of (W)Bethlehem in Judah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, he and his wife and his two sons. 2 The name of the man was Elimelech and the name of his wife Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion. They were (X)Ephrathites from Bethlehem in Judah. They went into the country of Moab and remained there. 3 But Elimelech, the husband of Naomi, died, and she was left with her two sons. 4 These took Moabite wives; the name of the one was Orpah and the name of the other Ruth. They lived there about ten years, 5 and both Mahlon and Chilion died, so that the woman was left without her two sons and her husband.
Ruth's Loyalty to Naomi
6 Then she arose with her daughters-in-law to return from the country of Moab, for she had heard in the fields of Moab that (Y)the Lord had visited his people and (Z)given them food. 7 So she set out from the place where she was with her two daughters-in-law, and they went on the way to return to the land of Judah. 8 But Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go, return each of you to her mother's house. May the Lord (AA)deal kindly with you, as you have dealt with (AB)the dead and with me. 9 The Lord grant that you may find (AC)rest, each of you in the house of her husband!” Then she kissed them, and they lifted up their voices and wept. 10 And they said to her, “No, we will return with you to your people.” 11 But Naomi said, “Turn back, my daughters; why will you go with me? Have I yet sons in my womb (AD)that they may become your husbands? 12 Turn back, my daughters; go your way, for I am too old to have a husband. If I should say I have hope, even if I should have a husband this night and should bear sons, 13 would you therefore wait till they were grown? Would you therefore refrain from marrying? No, my daughters, for it is exceedingly bitter to me for your sake that (AE)the hand of the Lord has gone out against me.” 14 Then they lifted up their voices and wept again. And Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth clung to her.
15 And she said, “See, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to (AF)her gods; return after your sister-in-law.” 16 But Ruth said, “Do not urge me to leave you or to return from following you. For where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. (AG)Your people shall be my people, and your God my God. 17 Where you die I will die, and there will I be buried. (AH)May the Lord do so to me and more also if anything but death parts me from you.” 18 (AI)And when Naomi saw that she was determined to go with her, she said no more.
Naomi and Ruth Return
19 So the two of them went on until they came to Bethlehem. And when they came to Bethlehem, (AJ)the whole town was stirred because of them. And the women said, “Is this Naomi?” 20 She said to them, “Do not call me Naomi;[a] call me (AK)Mara,[b] for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me. 21 (AL)I went away full, and the Lord has brought me back empty. Why call me Naomi, when the Lord has testified against me and the Almighty has brought calamity upon me?”
22 So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabite her daughter-in-law with her, who returned from the country of Moab. And they came to Bethlehem (AM)at the beginning of barley harvest.

21 The men of Israel had taken an oath(A) at Mizpah:(B) “Not one of us will give(C) his daughter in marriage to a Benjamite.”
2 The people went to Bethel,[a] where they sat before God until evening, raising their voices and weeping bitterly. 3 “Lord, God of Israel,” they cried, “why has this happened to Israel? Why should one tribe be missing(D) from Israel today?”
4 Early the next day the people built an altar and presented burnt offerings and fellowship offerings.(E)
5 Then the Israelites asked, “Who from all the tribes of Israel(F) has failed to assemble before the Lord?” For they had taken a solemn oath that anyone who failed to assemble before the Lord at Mizpah was to be put to death.
6 Now the Israelites grieved for the tribe of Benjamin, their fellow Israelites. “Today one tribe is cut off from Israel,” they said. 7 “How can we provide wives for those who are left, since we have taken an oath(G) by the Lord not to give them any of our daughters in marriage?” 8 Then they asked, “Which one of the tribes of Israel failed to assemble before the Lord at Mizpah?” They discovered that no one from Jabesh Gilead(H) had come to the camp for the assembly. 9 For when they counted the people, they found that none of the people of Jabesh Gilead were there.
10 So the assembly sent twelve thousand fighting men with instructions to go to Jabesh Gilead and put to the sword those living there, including the women and children. 11 “This is what you are to do,” they said. “Kill every male(I) and every woman who is not a virgin.(J)” 12 They found among the people living in Jabesh Gilead four hundred young women who had never slept with a man, and they took them to the camp at Shiloh(K) in Canaan.
13 Then the whole assembly sent an offer of peace(L) to the Benjamites at the rock of Rimmon.(M) 14 So the Benjamites returned at that time and were given the women of Jabesh Gilead who had been spared. But there were not enough for all of them.
15 The people grieved for Benjamin,(N) because the Lord had made a gap in the tribes of Israel. 16 And the elders of the assembly said, “With the women of Benjamin destroyed, how shall we provide wives for the men who are left? 17 The Benjamite survivors must have heirs,” they said, “so that a tribe of Israel will not be wiped out.(O) 18 We can’t give them our daughters as wives, since we Israelites have taken this oath:(P) ‘Cursed be anyone who gives(Q) a wife to a Benjamite.’ 19 But look, there is the annual festival of the Lord in Shiloh,(R) which lies north of Bethel(S), east of the road that goes from Bethel to Shechem,(T) and south of Lebonah.”
20 So they instructed the Benjamites, saying, “Go and hide in the vineyards 21 and watch. When the young women of Shiloh come out to join in the dancing,(U) rush from the vineyards and each of you seize one of them to be your wife. Then return to the land of Benjamin. 22 When their fathers or brothers complain to us, we will say to them, ‘Do us the favor of helping them, because we did not get wives for them during the war. You will not be guilty of breaking your oath because you did not give(V) your daughters to them.’”
23 So that is what the Benjamites did. While the young women were dancing,(W) each man caught one and carried her off to be his wife. Then they returned to their inheritance(X) and rebuilt the towns and settled in them.(Y)
24 At that time the Israelites left that place and went home to their tribes and clans, each to his own inheritance.
25 In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit.(Z)
Naomi Loses Her Husband and Sons
1 In the days when the judges ruled,[b](AA) there was a famine in the land.(AB) So a man from Bethlehem in Judah,(AC) together with his wife and two sons, went to live for a while(AD) in the country of Moab.(AE) 2 The man’s name was Elimelek,(AF) his wife’s name was Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Kilion.(AG) They were Ephrathites(AH) from Bethlehem,(AI) Judah. And they went to Moab and lived there.
3 Now Elimelek, Naomi’s husband, died, and she was left with her two sons. 4 They married Moabite women,(AJ) one named Orpah and the other Ruth.(AK) After they had lived there about ten years, 5 both Mahlon and Kilion(AL) also died,(AM) and Naomi was left without her two sons and her husband.
Naomi and Ruth Return to Bethlehem
6 When Naomi heard in Moab(AN) that the Lord had come to the aid of his people(AO) by providing food(AP) for them, she and her daughters-in-law(AQ) prepared to return home from there. 7 With her two daughters-in-law she left the place where she had been living and set out on the road that would take them back to the land of Judah.
8 Then Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go back, each of you, to your mother’s home.(AR) May the Lord show you kindness,(AS) as you have shown kindness to your dead husbands(AT) and to me. 9 May the Lord grant that each of you will find rest(AU) in the home of another husband.”
Then she kissed(AV) them goodbye and they wept aloud(AW) 10 and said to her, “We will go back with you to your people.”
11 But Naomi said, “Return home, my daughters. Why would you come with me? Am I going to have any more sons, who could become your husbands?(AX) 12 Return home, my daughters; I am too old to have another husband. Even if I thought there was still hope for me—even if I had a husband tonight and then gave birth to sons— 13 would you wait until they grew up?(AY) Would you remain unmarried for them? No, my daughters. It is more bitter(AZ) for me than for you, because the Lord’s hand has turned against me!(BA)”
14 At this they wept(BB) aloud again. Then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law(BC) goodbye,(BD) but Ruth clung to her.(BE)
15 “Look,” said Naomi, “your sister-in-law(BF) is going back to her people and her gods.(BG) Go back with her.”
16 But Ruth replied, “Don’t urge me to leave you(BH) or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go,(BI) and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people(BJ) and your God my God.(BK) 17 Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely,(BL) if even death separates you and me.”(BM) 18 When Naomi realized that Ruth was determined to go with her, she stopped urging her.(BN)
19 So the two women went on until they came to Bethlehem.(BO) When they arrived in Bethlehem, the whole town was stirred(BP) because of them, and the women exclaimed, “Can this be Naomi?”
20 “Don’t call me Naomi,[c]” she told them. “Call me Mara,[d] because the Almighty[e](BQ) has made my life very bitter.(BR) 21 I went away full, but the Lord has brought me back empty.(BS) Why call me Naomi? The Lord has afflicted[f] me;(BT) the Almighty has brought misfortune upon me.”
22 So Naomi returned from Moab accompanied by Ruth the Moabite,(BU) her daughter-in-law,(BV) arriving in Bethlehem as the barley harvest(BW) was beginning.(BX)
