12 From then on (A)Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar's friend. (B)Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.” 13 So when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on (C)the judgment seat at a place called The Stone Pavement, and in Aramaic[a] Gabbatha. 14 Now it was (D)the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour.[b] He said to the Jews, (E)“Behold your King!” 15 They cried out, (F)“Away with him, away with him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.” 16 (G)So he (H)delivered him over to them to be crucified.

The Crucifixion

So they took Jesus, 17 and (I)he went out, (J)bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. 18 (K)There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them. 19 Pilate (L)also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” 20 Many of the Jews read this inscription, for (M)the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek. 21 So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but rather, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews.’” 22 Pilate answered, (N)“What I have written I have written.”

23 (O)When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic.[c] But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom,

12 From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, “If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king(A) opposes Caesar.”

13 When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat(B) at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic(C) is Gabbatha). 14 It was the day of Preparation(D) of the Passover; it was about noon.(E)

“Here is your king,”(F) Pilate said to the Jews.

15 But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!”

“Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked.

“We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered.

16 Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.(G)

The Crucifixion of Jesus(H)

So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. 17 Carrying his own cross,(I) he went out to the place of the Skull(J) (which in Aramaic(K) is called Golgotha). 18 There they crucified him, and with him two others(L)—one on each side and Jesus in the middle.

19 Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: jesus of nazareth,(M) the king of the jews.(N) 20 Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city,(O) and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek. 21 The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, “Do not write ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews.”(P)

22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

23 When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.
