The Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus
18 After Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples across the Kidron valley to a place where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered. 2 Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, because Jesus often met there with his disciples. 3 So Judas brought a detachment of soldiers together with police from the chief priests and the Pharisees, and they came there with lanterns and torches and weapons. 4 Then Jesus, knowing all that was to happen to him, came forward and asked them, “Whom are you looking for?” 5 They answered, “Jesus of Nazareth.”[a] Jesus replied, “I am he.”[b] Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them. 6 When Jesus[c] said to them, “I am he,”[d] they stepped back and fell to the ground. 7 Again he asked them, “Whom are you looking for?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”[e] 8 Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he.[f] So if you are looking for me, let these men go.” 9 This was to fulfill the word that he had spoken, “I did not lose a single one of those whom you gave me.” 10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it, struck the high priest’s slave, and cut off his right ear. The slave’s name was Malchus. 11 Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword back into its sheath. Am I not to drink the cup that the Father has given me?”
Jesus before the High Priest
12 So the soldiers, their officer, and the Jewish police arrested Jesus and bound him. 13 First they took him to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year. 14 Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that it was better to have one person die for the people.
Peter Denies Jesus
15 Simon Peter and another disciple followed Jesus. Since that disciple was known to the high priest, he went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest, 16 but Peter was standing outside at the gate. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out, spoke to the woman who guarded the gate, and brought Peter in. 17 The woman said to Peter, “You are not also one of this man’s disciples, are you?” He said, “I am not.” 18 Now the slaves and the police had made a charcoal fire because it was cold, and they were standing around it and warming themselves. Peter also was standing with them and warming himself.
The High Priest Questions Jesus
19 Then the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching. 20 Jesus answered, “I have spoken openly to the world; I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all the Jews come together. I have said nothing in secret. 21 Why do you ask me? Ask those who heard what I said to them; they know what I said.” 22 When he had said this, one of the police standing nearby struck Jesus on the face, saying, “Is that how you answer the high priest?” 23 Jesus answered, “If I have spoken wrongly, testify to the wrong. But if I have spoken rightly, why do you strike me?” 24 Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
Peter Denies Jesus Again
25 Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They asked him, “You are not also one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.” 26 One of the slaves of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Did I not see you in the garden with him?” 27 Again Peter denied it, and at that moment the cock crowed.
Jesus before Pilate
28 Then they took Jesus from Caiaphas to Pilate’s headquarters.[g] It was early in the morning. They themselves did not enter the headquarters,[h] so as to avoid ritual defilement and to be able to eat the Passover. 29 So Pilate went out to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?” 30 They answered, “If this man were not a criminal, we would not have handed him over to you.” 31 Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and judge him according to your law.” The Jews replied, “We are not permitted to put anyone to death.” 32 (This was to fulfill what Jesus had said when he indicated the kind of death he was to die.)
33 Then Pilate entered the headquarters[i] again, summoned Jesus, and asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” 34 Jesus answered, “Do you ask this on your own, or did others tell you about me?” 35 Pilate replied, “I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done?” 36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.” 37 Pilate asked him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.” 38 Pilate asked him, “What is truth?”
Jesus Sentenced to Death
After he had said this, he went out to the Jews again and told them, “I find no case against him. 39 But you have a custom that I release someone for you at the Passover. Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” 40 They shouted in reply, “Not this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a bandit.

2 Anche Giuda, colui che lo tradiva, conosceva quel luogo, perché Gesù si era spesso riunito là con i suoi discepoli. 3 Giuda dunque, presa la coorte e le guardie mandate dai capi dei sacerdoti e dai farisei, andò là con lanterne, torce e armi.
4 Ma Gesù, ben sapendo tutto quello che stava per accadergli, uscì e chiese loro: «Chi cercate?» 5 Gli risposero: «Gesù il Nazareno!» Egli disse loro[a]: «Io sono». Giuda, che lo tradiva, era anch’egli là con loro. 6 Appena Gesù ebbe detto loro: «Io sono», indietreggiarono e caddero in terra.
7 Egli dunque domandò loro di nuovo: «Chi cercate?» Essi dissero: «Gesù il Nazareno». 8 Gesù rispose: «Vi ho detto che sono io[b]; se dunque cercate me, lasciate andare questi». 9 E ciò affinché si adempisse la parola che egli aveva detta: «Di quelli che tu mi hai dati, non ne ho perduto nessuno».
10 Allora Simon Pietro, che aveva una spada, la prese e colpì il servo del sommo sacerdote, recidendogli l’orecchio destro. Quel servo si chiamava Malco. 11 Ma Gesù disse a Pietro: «Rimetti la [tua] spada nel fodero; non berrò forse il calice che il Padre mi ha dato?»
Gesù è fatto comparire davanti al sommo sacerdote
12 (B)La coorte, dunque, il tribuno e le guardie dei Giudei presero Gesù e lo legarono, 13 e lo condussero prima da Anna, perché era suocero di Caiafa, che era sommo sacerdote di quell’anno. 14 Ora Caiafa era quello che aveva consigliato ai Giudei essere cosa utile che un uomo solo morisse per il popolo.
Gesù rinnegato tre volte da Pietro
15 (C)Intanto Simon Pietro e un altro discepolo[c] seguivano Gesù; e quel discepolo era noto al sommo sacerdote, ed entrò con Gesù nel cortile del sommo sacerdote; 16 Pietro invece stava fuori, alla porta. Allora quell’altro discepolo, che era noto al sommo sacerdote, uscì, parlò con la portinaia e fece entrare Pietro. 17 La serva portinaia dunque disse a Pietro: «Non sei anche tu dei discepoli di quest’uomo?» Egli rispose: «Non lo sono». 18 Ora i servi e le guardie, siccome faceva freddo, avevano acceso un fuoco e stavano là a scaldarsi, e anche[d] Pietro stava con loro a scaldarsi.
19 Il sommo sacerdote dunque interrogò Gesù intorno ai suoi discepoli e alla sua dottrina. 20 Gesù gli rispose: «Io ho parlato apertamente al mondo; ho sempre insegnato nelle sinagoghe e nel tempio, dove tutti i Giudei si radunano[e], e non ho detto nulla in segreto. 21 Perché mi interroghi? Domanda a quelli che mi hanno udito, quello che ho detto loro; ecco, essi sanno le cose che ho dette». 22 Ma appena ebbe detto questo, una delle guardie che gli stava vicino dette uno schiaffo a Gesù, dicendo: «Così rispondi al sommo sacerdote?» 23 Gesù gli rispose: «Se ho parlato male, dimostra il male che ho detto; ma se ho parlato bene, perché mi percuoti?»
24 Quindi Anna lo mandò legato a Caiafa, sommo sacerdote.
25 Intanto Simon Pietro stava là a scaldarsi, e gli dissero: «Non sei anche tu uno dei suoi discepoli?» Egli lo negò e disse: «Non lo sono». 26 Uno dei servi del sommo sacerdote, parente di quello a cui Pietro aveva tagliato l’orecchio, disse: «Non ti ho forse visto nel giardino con lui?» 27 E Pietro da capo lo negò, e subito il gallo cantò.
Gesù davanti a Pilato
28 (D)Poi, da Caiafa, condussero Gesù nel pretorio. Era mattina, ed essi non entrarono nel pretorio per non contaminarsi e poter così mangiare la Pasqua. 29 Pilato dunque andò fuori verso di loro e domandò: «Quale accusa portate contro quest’uomo?» 30 Essi gli risposero: «Se costui non fosse un malfattore, non te lo avremmo dato nelle mani». 31 Pilato quindi disse loro: «Prendetelo voi e giudicatelo secondo la vostra legge». I Giudei [allora] gli dissero: «A noi non è lecito far morire nessuno». 32 E ciò affinché si adempisse la parola che Gesù aveva detta, indicando di quale morte doveva morire.
33 Pilato dunque rientrò nel pretorio; chiamò Gesù e gli disse: «Sei tu il re dei Giudei?» 34 Gesù [gli] rispose: «Dici questo di tuo, oppure altri te l’hanno detto di me?» 35 Pilato gli rispose: «Sono io forse Giudeo? La tua nazione e i capi dei sacerdoti ti hanno consegnato a me; che cosa hai fatto?» 36 Gesù rispose: «Il mio regno non è di questo mondo; se il mio regno fosse di questo mondo, i miei servitori combatterebbero perché io non fossi consegnato ai Giudei; ma ora il mio regno non è di qui». 37 Allora Pilato gli disse: «Ma dunque, sei tu re?» Gesù rispose: «Tu lo dici, sono re; io sono nato per questo e per questo sono venuto nel mondo: per testimoniare della verità. Chiunque è dalla verità ascolta la mia voce». 38 Pilato gli disse: «Che cos’è verità?»
Liberazione di Barabba; condanna di Gesù
(E)E detto questo, uscì di nuovo verso i Giudei e disse loro: «Io non trovo colpa in lui. 39 Ma voi avete l’usanza che io vi liberi uno per la Pasqua; volete dunque che vi liberi il re dei Giudei?» 40 Allora [tutti] gridarono di nuovo: «Non costui, ma Barabba!» Ora, Barabba era un ladrone.

18 Als Jesus dies gesprochen hatte, ging er mit seinen Jüngern hinaus über den Winterbach Kidron; dort war ein Garten, in den Jesus und seine Jünger eintraten.
Die Gefangennahme Jesu
2 Aber auch Judas, der ihn verriet, kannte den Ort; denn Jesus versammelte sich oft dort mit seinen Jüngern.
3 Nachdem nun Judas die Truppe und von den obersten Priestern und Pharisäern Diener bekommen hatte, kam er dorthin mit Fackeln und Lampen und mit Waffen.
4 Jesus nun, der alles wusste, was über ihn kommen sollte, ging hinaus und sprach zu ihnen: Wen sucht ihr?
5 Sie antworteten ihm: Jesus, den Nazarener! Jesus spricht zu ihnen: Ich bin’s! Es stand aber auch Judas bei ihnen, der ihn verriet.
6 Als er nun zu ihnen sprach: Ich bin’s!, wichen sie alle zurück und fielen zu Boden.
7 Nun fragte er sie wiederum: Wen sucht ihr? Sie aber sprachen: Jesus, den Nazarener!
8 Jesus antwortete: Ich habe euch gesagt, dass ich es bin. Wenn ihr nun mich sucht, so lasst diese gehen!
9 — damit das Wort erfüllt würde, das er gesagt hatte: Ich habe keinen verloren von denen, die du mir gegeben hast.
10 Da nun Simon Petrus ein Schwert hatte, zog er es und schlug nach dem Knecht des Hohenpriesters und hieb ihm das rechte Ohr ab; der Name des Knechtes aber war Malchus.
11 Da sprach Jesus zu Petrus: Stecke dein Schwert in die Scheide! Soll ich den Kelch nicht trinken, den mir der Vater gegeben hat?
Jesus vor Hannas und Kajaphas. Die Verleugnung des Petrus
12 Die Truppe nun und ihr Befehlshaber und die Diener der Juden ergriffen Jesus und banden ihn,
13 und sie führten ihn zuerst ab zu Hannas; denn er war der Schwiegervater des Kajaphas, welcher in jenem Jahr Hoherpriester war.
14 Das war der Kajaphas, der den Juden geraten hatte, es sei besser, dass ein Mensch für das Volk umkomme.
15 Simon Petrus aber folgte Jesus nach, und der andere Jünger. Dieser Jünger war mit dem Hohenpriester bekannt und ging mit Jesus hinein in den Hof des Hohenpriesters.[a]
16 Petrus aber stand draußen vor der Tür. Da ging der andere Jünger hinaus, der mit dem Hohenpriester bekannt war, und redete mit der Türhüterin und führte Petrus hinein.
17 Da spricht die Magd, die die Tür hütete, zu Petrus: Bist nicht auch du einer von den Jüngern dieses Menschen? Petrus spricht: Ich bin"s nicht!
18 Es standen aber die Knechte und Diener um ein Kohlenfeuer, das sie gemacht hatten — denn es war kalt —, und wärmten sich; Petrus aber stand bei ihnen und wärmte sich.
19 Der Hohepriester nun befragte Jesus über seine Jünger und über seine Lehre.
20 Jesus antwortete ihm: Ich habe öffentlich zu der Welt geredet; ich habe stets in der Synagoge und im Tempel gelehrt, wo die Juden immer zusammenkommen, und im Verborgenen habe ich nichts geredet.
21 Was fragst du mich? Frage die, welche gehört haben, was ich zu ihnen geredet habe; siehe, diese wissen, was ich gesagt habe!
22 Als er aber dies sagte, schlug einer der Diener, die dabeistanden, Jesus ins Gesicht und sprach: Antwortest du so dem Hohenpriester?
23 Jesus erwiderte ihm: Habe ich unrecht geredet, so beweise, was daran unrecht war; habe ich aber recht geredet, was schlägst du mich?
24 Hannas hatte ihn nämlich gebunden zum Hohenpriester Kajaphas gesandt.
25 Simon Petrus aber stand da und wärmte sich. Da sprachen sie zu ihm: Bist nicht auch du einer seiner Jünger? Er leugnete und sprach: Ich bin"s nicht!
26 Da sagte einer von den Knechten des Hohenpriesters, ein Verwandter dessen, dem Petrus das Ohr abgehauen hatte: Sah ich dich nicht im Garten bei ihm?
27 Da leugnete Petrus nochmals, und sogleich krähte der Hahn.
Jesus vor Pilatus
28 Sie führten nun Jesus von Kajaphas in das Prätorium. Es war aber noch früh. Und sie selbst betraten das Prätorium nicht, damit sie nicht unrein würden, sondern das Passah essen könnten.[b]
29 Da ging Pilatus zu ihnen hinaus und fragte: Was für eine Anklage erhebt ihr gegen diesen Menschen?
30 Sie antworteten und sprachen zu ihm: Wäre er kein Übeltäter, so hätten wir ihn dir nicht ausgeliefert!
31 Da sprach Pilatus zu ihnen: So nehmt ihr ihn und richtet ihn nach eurem Gesetz! Die Juden nun sprachen zu ihm: Wir dürfen niemand töten!
32 — damit Jesu Wort erfüllt würde, das er sagte, als er andeutete, durch welchen Tod er sterben sollte.
33 Nun ging Pilatus wieder ins Prätorium hinein und rief Jesus und fragte ihn: Bist du der König der Juden?
34 Jesus antwortete ihm: Redest du das von dir selbst aus, oder haben es dir andere von mir gesagt?
35 Pilatus antwortete: Bin ich denn ein Jude? Dein Volk und die obersten Priester haben dich mir ausgeliefert! Was hast du getan?
36 Jesus antwortete: Mein Reich[c] ist nicht von dieser Welt; wäre mein Reich von dieser Welt, so hätten meine Diener gekämpft, damit ich den Juden nicht ausgeliefert würde; nun aber ist mein Reich nicht von hier.
37 Da sprach Pilatus zu ihm: So bist du also ein König? Jesus antwortete: Du sagst es; ich bin ein König. Ich bin dazu geboren und dazu in die Welt gekommen, dass ich der Wahrheit Zeugnis gebe; jeder, der aus der Wahrheit ist, hört meine Stimme.
38 Pilatus spricht zu ihm: Was ist Wahrheit? Und nachdem er das gesagt hatte, ging er wieder hinaus zu den Juden und sprach zu ihnen: Ich finde keine Schuld an ihm!
39 Ihr habt aber eine Gewohnheit, dass ich euch am Passahfest einen freigebe; wollt ihr nun, dass ich euch den König der Juden freigebe?
40 Da schrien sie wieder alle und sprachen: Nicht diesen, sondern Barabbas! Barabbas aber war ein Mörder.

18 Miután ezeket elmondta Jézus, kiment tanítványaival a Kedrón-patakon túlra. Volt itt egy kert, ide ment be tanítványaival együtt.
2 Júdás, aki elárulta őt, szintén ismerte ezt a helyet, mert gyakran gyűltek ott össze Jézus és a tanítványai.
3 Júdás tehát maga mellé vette a katonai csapatot, a főpapoktól és a farizeusoktól küldött templomi szolgákat, és odament fáklyákkal, lámpásokkal és fegyverekkel.
4 Mivel pedig tudta Jézus mindazt, ami reá vár, előlépett, és így szólt hozzájuk: "Kit kerestek?"
5 Azok pedig így feleltek: "A názáreti Jézust." "Én vagyok" - mondta Jézus. Ott állt velük Júdás is, aki elárulta őt.

18 Ott álltak a szolgák és a templomőrök, akik tüzet raktak, mert hideg volt, és melegedtek. Péter is ott állt köztük, és melegedett.
19 A főpap pedig tanítványai és tanítása felől kérdezte Jézust.
20 Jézus így válaszolt neki: "Én nyilvánosan szóltam a világhoz: én mindig a zsinagógában és a templomban tanítottam, ahol a zsidók mindannyian összejönnek, titokban nem beszéltem semmit.
21 Miért kérdezel engem? Kérdezd meg azokat, akik hallották, mit beszéltem nekik: íme, ők tudják, mit mondtam."

Jézus kihallgatása Pilátus előtt(C)
28 Jézust Kajafástól a helytartóságra vitték. Kora reggel volt. Akik vitték, maguk nem mentek be a helytartóságra, hogy ne legyenek tisztátalanokká, hanem megehessék a húsvéti vacsorát.
29 Pilátus ekkor kijött hozzájuk az épület elé, és megkérdezte: "Milyen vádat emeltek ez ellen az ember ellen?"
30 Ezt válaszolták: "Ha ez nem volna gonosztevő, nem adtuk volna át neked."
31 Pilátus erre ezt mondta nekik: "Vegyétek át ti, és ítéljétek el a ti törvényetek szerint!" A zsidók így feleltek: "Nekünk senkit sincs jogunk megölni!"
32 Így kellett beteljesednie Jézus szavának, amelyet akkor mondott, amikor jelezte: milyen halállal kell meghalnia.
33 Pilátus azután ismét bement a helytartóságra, behívatta Jézust, és megkérdezte tőle: "Te vagy a zsidók királya?"
34 Jézus viszont ezt kérdezte tőle: "Magadtól mondod-e ezt, vagy mások mondták neked rólam?"
35 Pilátus erre így szólt: "Hát zsidó vagyok én? A te néped és a főpapok adtak át nekem téged: Mit tettél?"
36 Jézus így felelt: "Az én országom nem e világból való: ha ebből a világból való volna az én országom, az én szolgáim harcolnának, hogy ne szolgáltassanak ki a zsidóknak. De az én országom nem innen való."
37 Pilátus ezt mondta neki: "Akkor mégis király vagy te?" Jézus így válaszolt: "Te mondod, hogy király vagyok. Én azért születtem, és azért jöttem a világba, hogy bizonyságot tegyek az igazságról: mindenki, aki az igazságból való, hallgat az én szavamra."
38 Pilátus így szólt hozzá: "Mi az igazság? Miután ezt mondta, ismét kiment a zsidókhoz, és így szólt hozzájuk: "Én nem találok benne semmiféle bűnt.
