Sorrow Will Turn to Joy

16 “A (A)little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me, (B)because I go to the Father.”

17 Then some of His disciples said among themselves, “What is this that He says to us, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’; and, ‘because I go to the Father’?” 18 They said therefore, “What is this that He says, ‘A little while’? We do not [a]know what He is saying.”

19 Now Jesus knew that they desired to ask Him, and He said to them, “Are you inquiring among yourselves about what I said, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’? 20 Most assuredly, I say to you that you will weep and (C)lament, but the world will rejoice; and you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into (D)joy. 21 (E)A woman, when she is in labor, has sorrow because her hour has come; but as soon as she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22 Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again and (F)your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you.

23 “And in that day you will ask Me nothing. (G)Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, (H)that your joy may be (I)full.

Jesus Christ Has Overcome the World

25 “These things I have spoken to you in figurative language; but the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but I will tell you (J)plainly about the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you; 27 (K)for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and (L)have believed that I came forth from God. 28 (M)I came forth from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world and go to the Father.”

29 His disciples said to Him, “See, now You are speaking plainly, and using no figure of speech! 30 Now we are sure that (N)You know all things, and have no need that anyone should question You. By this (O)we believe that You came forth from God.”

31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 (P)Indeed the hour is coming, yes, has now come, that you will be scattered, (Q)each to his [b]own, and will leave Me alone. And (R)yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. 33 These things I have spoken to you, that (S)in Me you may have peace. (T)In the world you [c]will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, (U)I have overcome the world.”

Jesus Prays for Himself

17 Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: “Father, (V)the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You, (W)as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He [d]should give eternal life to as many (X)as You have given Him. And (Y)this is eternal life, that they may know You, (Z)the only true God, and Jesus Christ (AA)whom You have sent. (AB)I have glorified You on the earth. (AC)I have finished the work (AD)which You have given Me to do. And now, O Father, glorify Me together [e]with Yourself, with the glory (AE)which I had with You before the world was.

Jesus Prays for His Disciples

(AF)“I have [f]manifested Your name to the men (AG)whom You have given Me out of the world. (AH)They were Yours, You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word. Now they have known that all things which You have given Me are from You. For I have given to them the words (AI)which You have given Me; and they have received them, (AJ)and have known surely that I came forth from You; and they have believed that (AK)You sent Me.

“I pray for them. (AL)I do not pray for the world but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours. 10 And all Mine are Yours, and (AM)Yours are Mine, and I am glorified in them. 11 (AN)Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, (AO)keep[g] through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one (AP)as We are. 12 While I was with them [h]in the world, (AQ)I kept them in [i]Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept; and (AR)none of them is [j]lost (AS)except the son of [k]perdition, (AT)that the Scripture might be fulfilled. 13 But now I come to You, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have My joy fulfilled in themselves. 14 I have given them Your word; (AU)and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, (AV)just as I am not of the world. 15 I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but (AW)that You should keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 (AX)Sanctify[l] them by Your truth. (AY)Your word is truth. 18 (AZ)As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. 19 And (BA)for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth.

Jesus Prays for All Believers

20 “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who [m]will believe in Me through their word; 21 (BB)that they all may be one, as (BC)You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. 22 And the (BD)glory which You gave Me I have given them, (BE)that they may be one just as We are one: 23 I in them, and You in Me; (BF)that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.

24 (BG)“Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me; (BH)for You loved Me before the foundation of the world. 25 O righteous Father! (BI)The world has not known You, but (BJ)I have known You; and (BK)these have known that You sent Me. 26 (BL)And I have declared to them Your name, and will declare it, that the love (BM)with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them.”

The Disciples’ Grief Will Turn to Joy

16 Jesus went on to say, “In a little while(A) you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.”(B)

17 At this, some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,’(C) and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?”(D) 18 They kept asking, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand what he is saying.”

19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, “Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me’? 20 Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn(E) while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.(F) 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain(G) because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief,(H) but I will see you again(I) and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.(J) 23 In that day(K) you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.(L) 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive,(M) and your joy will be complete.(N)

25 “Though I have been speaking figuratively,(O) a time is coming(P) when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name.(Q) I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me(R) and have believed that I came from God.(S) 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”(T)

29 Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech.(U) 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe(V) that you came from God.”(W)

31 “Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. 32 “A time is coming(X) and in fact has come when you will be scattered,(Y) each to your own home. You will leave me all alone.(Z) Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.(AA)

33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.(AB) In this world you will have trouble.(AC) But take heart! I have overcome(AD) the world.”

Jesus Prays to Be Glorified

17 After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven(AE) and prayed:

“Father, the hour has come.(AF) Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.(AG) For you granted him authority over all people(AH) that he might give eternal life(AI) to all those you have given him.(AJ) Now this is eternal life: that they know you,(AK) the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.(AL) I have brought you glory(AM) on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do.(AN) And now, Father, glorify me(AO) in your presence with the glory I had with you(AP) before the world began.(AQ)

Jesus Prays for His Disciples

“I have revealed you[a](AR) to those whom you gave me(AS) out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. For I gave them the words you gave me(AT) and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you,(AU) and they believed that you sent me.(AV) I pray for them.(AW) I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me,(AX) for they are yours. 10 All I have is yours, and all you have is mine.(AY) And glory has come to me through them. 11 I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world,(AZ) and I am coming to you.(BA) Holy Father, protect them by the power of[b] your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one(BB) as we are one.(BC) 12 While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by[c] that name you gave me. None has been lost(BD) except the one doomed to destruction(BE) so that Scripture would be fulfilled.(BF)

13 “I am coming to you now,(BG) but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy(BH) within them. 14 I have given them your word and the world has hated them,(BI) for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world.(BJ) 15 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.(BK) 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.(BL) 17 Sanctify them by[d] the truth; your word is truth.(BM) 18 As you sent me into the world,(BN) I have sent them into the world.(BO) 19 For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.(BP)

Jesus Prays for All Believers

20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one,(BQ) Father, just as you are in me and I am in you.(BR) May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.(BS) 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me,(BT) that they may be one as we are one(BU) 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me(BV) and have loved them(BW) even as you have loved me.

24 “Father, I want those you have given me(BX) to be with me where I am,(BY) and to see my glory,(BZ) the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.(CA)

25 “Righteous Father, though the world does not know you,(CB) I know you, and they know that you have sent me.(CC) 26 I have made you[e] known to them,(CD) and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them(CE) and that I myself may be in them.”
