I Am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life

14 (A)“Let not your hearts be troubled. (B)Believe in God;[a] believe also in me. In (C)my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that (D)I go to prepare a place for you?[b] And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you (E)to myself, that (F)where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.”[c] (G)Thomas said to him, “Lord, (H)we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am (I)the way, and (J)the truth, and (K)the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (L)If you had known me, you would have (M)known my Father also.[d] From now on you do know him and (N)have seen him.”

(O)Philip said to him, “Lord, (P)show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? (Q)Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that (R)I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you (S)I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that (T)I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else (U)believe on account of the works themselves.

12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, (V)whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I (W)am going to the Father. 13 (X)Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that (Y)the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 (Z)If you ask me[e] anything in my name, I will do it.

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

15 (AA)“If you love me, you will (AB)keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another (AC)Helper,[f] to be with you forever, 17 even (AD)the Spirit of truth, (AE)whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and (AF)will be[g] in you.

18 “I will not leave you as orphans; (AG)I will come to you. 19 (AH)Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but (AI)you will see me. (AJ)Because I live, you also will live. 20 (AK)In that day you will know that (AL)I am in my Father, and (AM)you in me, and (AN)I in you. 21 (AO)Whoever has my commandments and (AP)keeps them, he it is who loves me. And (AQ)he who loves me (AR)will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and (AS)manifest myself to him.” 22 (AT)Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it (AU)that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” 23 Jesus answered him, (AV)“If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and (AW)we will come to him and (AX)make our home with him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And (AY)the word that you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me.

25 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the (AZ)Helper, the Holy Spirit, (BA)whom the Father will send in my name, (BB)he will teach you all things and (BC)bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. 27 (BD)Peace I leave with you; (BE)my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. (BF)Let not your hearts be troubled, neither (BG)let them be afraid. 28 (BH)You heard me say to you, (BI)‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I (BJ)am going to the Father, for (BK)the Father is greater than I. 29 And (BL)now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe. 30 I will no longer talk much with you, for (BM)the ruler of this world is coming. (BN)He has no claim on me, 31 but I do (BO)as the Father has commanded me, (BP)so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.

I Am the True Vine

15 “I am the (BQ)true vine, and my Father is (BR)the vinedresser. (BS)Every branch in me that does not bear fruit (BT)he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, (BU)that it may bear more fruit. Already (BV)you are clean (BW)because of the word that I have spoken to you. (BX)Abide (BY)in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; (BZ)you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that (CA)bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in me (CB)he is thrown away like a branch and withers; (CC)and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If (CD)you abide in me, and my words abide in you, (CE)ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. (CF)By this my Father is glorified, that you (CG)bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. (CH)As the Father has loved me, (CI)so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 (CJ)If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as (CK)I have kept (CL)my Father's commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, (CM)that my joy may be in you, and that (CN)your joy may be full.

12 (CO)“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 (CP)Greater love has no one than this, (CQ)that someone lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are (CR)my friends (CS)if you do what I command you. 15 (CT)No longer do I call you servants,[h] for the servant (CU)does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for (CV)all that I have heard from my Father (CW)I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but (CX)I chose you and appointed you that you should go and (CY)bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that (CZ)whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. 17 These things I command you, (DA)so that you will love one another.

The Hatred of the World

18 (DB)“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. 19 (DC)If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because (DD)you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you: (DE)‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, (DF)they will also persecute you. (DG)If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. 21 But (DH)all these things they will do to you (DI)on account of my name, (DJ)because they do not know him who sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, (DK)they would not have been guilty of sin,[i] but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 (DL)Whoever hates me hates my Father also. 24 (DM)If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, (DN)they would not be guilty of sin, but now they have (DO)seen and hated both me and my Father. 25 But (DP)the word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: (DQ)‘They hated me without a cause.’

26 “But (DR)when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, (DS)he will bear witness about me. 27 And (DT)you also will bear witness, (DU)because you have been with me (DV)from the beginning.

Jesus Comforts His Disciples

14 “Do not let your hearts be troubled.(A) You believe(B) in God[a];(C) believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there(D) to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back(E) and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.(F) You know the way to the place where I am going.”

Jesus the Way to the Father

Thomas(G) said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

Jesus answered, “I am(H) the way(I) and the truth(J) and the life.(K) No one comes to the Father except through me.(L) If you really know me, you will know[b] my Father as well.(M) From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”

Philip(N) said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”

Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.(O) How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me?(P) The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority.(Q) Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.(R) 12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes(S) in me will do the works I have been doing,(T) and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask(U) in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

15 “If you love me, keep my commands.(V) 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate(W) to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth.(X) The world cannot accept him,(Y) because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be[c] in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans;(Z) I will come to you.(AA) 19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me.(AB) Because I live, you also will live.(AC) 20 On that day(AD) you will realize that I am in my Father,(AE) and you are in me, and I am in you.(AF) 21 Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me.(AG) The one who loves me will be loved by my Father,(AH) and I too will love them and show myself to them.”

22 Then Judas(AI) (not Judas Iscariot) said, “But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?”(AJ)

23 Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching.(AK) My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.(AL) 24 Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.(AM)

25 “All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Advocate,(AN) the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name,(AO) will teach you all things(AP) and will remind you of everything I have said to you.(AQ) 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.(AR) I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled(AS) and do not be afraid.

28 “You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’(AT) If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father,(AU) for the Father is greater than I.(AV) 29 I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe.(AW) 30 I will not say much more to you, for the prince of this world(AX) is coming. He has no hold over me, 31 but he comes so that the world may learn that I love the Father and do exactly what my Father has commanded me.(AY)

“Come now; let us leave.

The Vine and the Branches

15 “I am(AZ) the true vine,(BA) and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit,(BB) while every branch that does bear fruit(BC) he prunes[d] so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.(BD) Remain in me, as I also remain in you.(BE) No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit;(BF) apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.(BG) If you remain in me(BH) and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.(BI) This is to my Father’s glory,(BJ) that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.(BK)

“As the Father has loved me,(BL) so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands,(BM) you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.(BN) 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.(BO) 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.(BP) 14 You are my friends(BQ) if you do what I command.(BR) 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.(BS) 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you(BT) so that you might go and bear fruit(BU)—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.(BV) 17 This is my command: Love each other.(BW)

The World Hates the Disciples

18 “If the world hates you,(BX) keep in mind that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you(BY) out of the world. That is why the world hates you.(BZ) 20 Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’[e](CA) If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.(CB) If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. 21 They will treat you this way because of my name,(CC) for they do not know the one who sent me.(CD) 22 If I had not come and spoken to them,(CE) they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.(CF) 23 Whoever hates me hates my Father as well. 24 If I had not done among them the works no one else did,(CG) they would not be guilty of sin.(CH) As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. 25 But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law:(CI) ‘They hated me without reason.’[f](CJ)

The Work of the Holy Spirit

26 “When the Advocate(CK) comes, whom I will send to you from the Father(CL)—the Spirit of truth(CM) who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me.(CN) 27 And you also must testify,(CO) for you have been with me from the beginning.(CP)

Esther Saves the Jews

On that day King Ahasuerus gave to Queen Esther the house of Haman, (A)the enemy of the Jews. And Mordecai came before the king, for Esther had told (B)what he was to her. (C)And the king took off his signet ring, which he had taken from Haman, and gave it to Mordecai. And Esther set Mordecai over the house of Haman.

Then Esther spoke again to the king. She fell at his feet and wept and pleaded with him to avert the evil plan of Haman (D)the Agagite and the plot that he had devised against the Jews. (E)When the king held out the golden scepter to Esther, Esther rose and stood before the king. And she said, “If it please the king, (F)and if I have found favor in his sight, and if the thing seems right before the king, and I am pleasing in his eyes, let an order be written to revoke (G)the letters devised by Haman (H)the Agagite, the son of Hammedatha, which he wrote to destroy the Jews who are in all the provinces of the king. For how can I bear (I)to see the calamity that is coming to my people? Or how can I bear to see the destruction of my kindred?” Then King Ahasuerus said to Queen Esther and to Mordecai the Jew, “Behold, (J)I have given Esther the house of Haman, and they have hanged him on the gallows,[a] because he intended to lay hands on the Jews. But you may write as you please with regard to the Jews, in the name of the king, (K)and seal it with the king's ring, for an edict written in the name of the king and sealed with the king's ring (L)cannot be revoked.”

(M)The king's scribes were summoned at that time, in the third month, which is the month of Sivan, on the twenty-third day. And an edict was written, according to all that Mordecai commanded concerning the Jews, to (N)the satraps and the governors and the officials of the provinces (O)from India to Ethiopia, (P)127 provinces, (Q)to each province in its own script and to each people in its own language, and also to the Jews in their script and their language. 10 (R)And he wrote in the name of King Ahasuerus (S)and sealed it with the king's signet ring. Then he sent the letters by mounted couriers riding on (T)swift horses that were used in the king's service, bred from the royal stud, 11 saying that the king allowed the Jews who were in every city (U)to gather and defend their lives, (V)to destroy, to kill, and to annihilate any armed force of any people or province that might attack them, children and women included, (W)and to plunder their goods, 12 (X)on one day throughout all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month of Adar. 13 (Y)A copy of what was written was to be issued as a decree in every province, being publicly displayed to all peoples, and the Jews were to be ready on that day to take vengeance on their enemies. 14 So the couriers, mounted on their (Z)swift horses that were used in the king's service, rode out hurriedly, urged by the king's command. And the decree was issued in Susa the citadel.

15 Then Mordecai went out from the presence of the king (AA)in royal robes of blue and white, with a great golden crown[b] and (AB)a robe of fine linen and purple, (AC)and the city of Susa shouted and rejoiced. 16 The Jews had (AD)light and gladness and joy and honor. 17 And in every province and in every city, wherever the king's command and his edict reached, there was gladness and joy among the Jews, a feast and (AE)a holiday. (AF)And many from the peoples of the country declared themselves Jews, (AG)for fear of the Jews had fallen on them.

The King’s Edict in Behalf of the Jews

That same day King Xerxes gave Queen Esther the estate of Haman,(A) the enemy of the Jews. And Mordecai came into the presence of the king, for Esther had told how he was related to her. The king took off his signet ring,(B) which he had reclaimed from Haman, and presented it to Mordecai. And Esther appointed him over Haman’s estate.(C)

Esther again pleaded with the king, falling at his feet and weeping. She begged him to put an end to the evil plan of Haman the Agagite,(D) which he had devised against the Jews. Then the king extended the gold scepter(E) to Esther and she arose and stood before him.

“If it pleases the king,” she said, “and if he regards me with favor(F) and thinks it the right thing to do, and if he is pleased with me, let an order be written overruling the dispatches that Haman son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, devised and wrote to destroy the Jews in all the king’s provinces. For how can I bear to see disaster fall on my people? How can I bear to see the destruction of my family?”(G)

King Xerxes replied to Queen Esther and to Mordecai the Jew, “Because Haman attacked the Jews, I have given his estate to Esther, and they have impaled(H) him on the pole he set up. Now write another decree(I) in the king’s name in behalf of the Jews as seems best to you, and seal(J) it with the king’s signet ring(K)—for no document written in the king’s name and sealed with his ring can be revoked.”(L)

At once the royal secretaries were summoned—on the twenty-third day of the third month, the month of Sivan. They wrote out all Mordecai’s orders to the Jews, and to the satraps, governors and nobles of the 127 provinces stretching from India to Cush.[a](M) These orders were written in the script of each province and the language of each people and also to the Jews in their own script and language.(N) 10 Mordecai wrote in the name of King Xerxes, sealed the dispatches with the king’s signet ring, and sent them by mounted couriers, who rode fast horses especially bred for the king.

11 The king’s edict granted the Jews in every city the right to assemble and protect themselves; to destroy, kill and annihilate the armed men of any nationality or province who might attack them and their women and children,[b] and to plunder(O) the property of their enemies. 12 The day appointed for the Jews to do this in all the provinces of King Xerxes was the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, the month of Adar.(P) 13 A copy of the text of the edict was to be issued as law in every province and made known to the people of every nationality so that the Jews would be ready on that day(Q) to avenge themselves on their enemies.

14 The couriers, riding the royal horses, went out, spurred on by the king’s command, and the edict was issued in the citadel of Susa.(R)

The Triumph of the Jews

15 When Mordecai(S) left the king’s presence, he was wearing royal garments of blue and white, a large crown of gold(T) and a purple robe of fine linen.(U) And the city of Susa held a joyous celebration.(V) 16 For the Jews it was a time of happiness and joy,(W) gladness and honor.(X) 17 In every province and in every city to which the edict of the king came, there was joy(Y) and gladness among the Jews, with feasting and celebrating. And many people of other nationalities became Jews because fear(Z) of the Jews had seized them.(AA)
