14 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.

Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.

Philip saith unto him, Lord, show us the Father, and it sufficeth us.

Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Show us the Father?

10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.

11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake.

12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.

16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

19 Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.

20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.

21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?

23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.

25 These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you.

26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

28 Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.

29 And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe.

30 Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.

31 But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence.

15 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.

Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.

Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.

I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.

Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.

As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.

10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.

11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.

12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.

13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.

15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.

16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

17 These things I command you, that ye love one another.

18 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.

19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.

20 Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.

21 But all these things will they do unto you for my name's sake, because they know not him that sent me.

22 If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloak for their sin.

23 He that hateth me hateth my Father also.

24 If I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father.

25 But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.

26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

27 And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.

16 These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended.

They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.

And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.

But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.

But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?

But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.

Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

Of sin, because they believe not on me;

10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;

11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.

13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

15 All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

16 A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.

17 Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?

18 They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith.

19 Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do ye enquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me?

20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.

21 A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.

22 And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.

23 And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.

24 Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.

25 These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father.

26 At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you:

27 For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.

28 I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.

29 His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb.

30 Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God.

31 Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe?

32 Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.

33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

17 These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:

As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.

And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.

And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.

I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.

Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee.

For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.

I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.

10 And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.

11 And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.

12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.

13 And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.

14 I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.

16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.

19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.

20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:

23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

24 Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.

25 O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.

26 And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.

I Am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life

14 (A)“Let not your hearts be troubled. (B)Believe in God;[a] believe also in me. In (C)my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that (D)I go to prepare a place for you?[b] And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you (E)to myself, that (F)where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.”[c] (G)Thomas said to him, “Lord, (H)we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am (I)the way, and (J)the truth, and (K)the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (L)If you had known me, you would have (M)known my Father also.[d] From now on you do know him and (N)have seen him.”

(O)Philip said to him, “Lord, (P)show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? (Q)Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that (R)I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you (S)I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that (T)I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else (U)believe on account of the works themselves.

12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, (V)whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I (W)am going to the Father. 13 (X)Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that (Y)the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 (Z)If you ask me[e] anything in my name, I will do it.

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

15 (AA)“If you love me, you will (AB)keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another (AC)Helper,[f] to be with you forever, 17 even (AD)the Spirit of truth, (AE)whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and (AF)will be[g] in you.

18 “I will not leave you as orphans; (AG)I will come to you. 19 (AH)Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but (AI)you will see me. (AJ)Because I live, you also will live. 20 (AK)In that day you will know that (AL)I am in my Father, and (AM)you in me, and (AN)I in you. 21 (AO)Whoever has my commandments and (AP)keeps them, he it is who loves me. And (AQ)he who loves me (AR)will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and (AS)manifest myself to him.” 22 (AT)Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it (AU)that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” 23 Jesus answered him, (AV)“If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and (AW)we will come to him and (AX)make our home with him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And (AY)the word that you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me.

25 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the (AZ)Helper, the Holy Spirit, (BA)whom the Father will send in my name, (BB)he will teach you all things and (BC)bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. 27 (BD)Peace I leave with you; (BE)my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. (BF)Let not your hearts be troubled, neither (BG)let them be afraid. 28 (BH)You heard me say to you, (BI)‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I (BJ)am going to the Father, for (BK)the Father is greater than I. 29 And (BL)now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe. 30 I will no longer talk much with you, for (BM)the ruler of this world is coming. (BN)He has no claim on me, 31 but I do (BO)as the Father has commanded me, (BP)so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.

I Am the True Vine

15 “I am the (BQ)true vine, and my Father is (BR)the vinedresser. (BS)Every branch in me that does not bear fruit (BT)he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, (BU)that it may bear more fruit. Already (BV)you are clean (BW)because of the word that I have spoken to you. (BX)Abide (BY)in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; (BZ)you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that (CA)bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in me (CB)he is thrown away like a branch and withers; (CC)and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If (CD)you abide in me, and my words abide in you, (CE)ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. (CF)By this my Father is glorified, that you (CG)bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. (CH)As the Father has loved me, (CI)so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 (CJ)If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as (CK)I have kept (CL)my Father's commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, (CM)that my joy may be in you, and that (CN)your joy may be full.

12 (CO)“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 (CP)Greater love has no one than this, (CQ)that someone lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are (CR)my friends (CS)if you do what I command you. 15 (CT)No longer do I call you servants,[h] for the servant (CU)does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for (CV)all that I have heard from my Father (CW)I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but (CX)I chose you and appointed you that you should go and (CY)bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that (CZ)whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. 17 These things I command you, (DA)so that you will love one another.

The Hatred of the World

18 (DB)“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. 19 (DC)If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because (DD)you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you: (DE)‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, (DF)they will also persecute you. (DG)If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. 21 But (DH)all these things they will do to you (DI)on account of my name, (DJ)because they do not know him who sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, (DK)they would not have been guilty of sin,[i] but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 (DL)Whoever hates me hates my Father also. 24 (DM)If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, (DN)they would not be guilty of sin, but now they have (DO)seen and hated both me and my Father. 25 But (DP)the word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: (DQ)‘They hated me without a cause.’

26 “But (DR)when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, (DS)he will bear witness about me. 27 And (DT)you also will bear witness, (DU)because you have been with me (DV)from the beginning.

16 “I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away. (DW)They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, (DX)the hour is coming when (DY)whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. And they will do these things (DZ)because they have not known the Father, nor me. But (EA)I have said these things to you, that when (EB)their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you.

The Work of the Holy Spirit

“I did not say these things to you from the beginning, (EC)because I was with you. But now (ED)I am going to him who sent me, and (EE)none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ But because I have said these things to you, (EF)sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for (EG)if I do not go away, (EH)the Helper will not come to you. But (EI)if (EJ)I go, (EK)I will send him to you. (EL)And when he comes, he will (EM)convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, (EN)because they do not believe in me; 10 (EO)concerning righteousness, (EP)because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 (EQ)concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world (ER)is judged.

12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When (ES)the Spirit of truth comes, (ET)he will (EU)guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but (EV)whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will (EW)glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 (EX)All that the Father has is mine; (EY)therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

Your Sorrow Will Turn into Joy

16 (EZ)“A little while, and you will see me no longer; and (FA)again a little while, and you will see me.” 17 So (FB)some of his disciples said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, (FC)‘A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’; and, (FD)‘because I am going to the Father’?” 18 So they were saying, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? (FE)We do not know what he is talking about.” 19 (FF)Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’? 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, (FG)you will weep and lament, but (FH)the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but (FI)your sorrow will turn into joy. 21 (FJ)When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22 (FK)So also you have sorrow now, but (FL)I will see you again, and (FM)your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. 23 (FN)In that day you will (FO)ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, (FP)whatever you ask of the Father in my name, (FQ)he will give it to you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in my name. (FR)Ask, and you will receive, (FS)that your joy may be full.

I Have Overcome the World

25 “I have said these things to you in figures of speech. (FT)The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; 27 (FU)for the Father himself loves you, because (FV)you have loved me and (FW)have believed that I came from God.[j] 28 (FX)I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now (FY)I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”

29 His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not (FZ)using figurative speech! 30 Now we know that (GA)you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that (GB)you came from God.” 31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 Behold, (GC)the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when (GD)you will be scattered, each to his own home, and (GE)will leave me alone. (GF)Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. 33 I have said these things to you, that (GG)in me you may have peace. (GH)In the world you will have (GI)tribulation. But (GJ)take heart; (GK)I have overcome the world.”

The High Priestly Prayer

17 When Jesus had spoken these words, (GL)he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, (GM)the hour has come; (GN)glorify your Son that the Son may (GO)glorify you, since (GP)you have given him authority over all flesh, (GQ)to give eternal life to all (GR)whom you have given him. (GS)And this is eternal life, (GT)that they know you, (GU)the only (GV)true God, and (GW)Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I (GX)glorified you on earth, (GY)having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. And now, Father, (GZ)glorify me in your own presence with the glory (HA)that I had with you (HB)before the world existed.

(HC)“I have manifested your name to the people (HD)whom you gave me out of the world. (HE)Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything (HF)that you have given me is from you. For I have given them (HG)the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that (HH)I came from you; and (HI)they have believed that you sent me. I am praying for them. (HJ)I am not praying for the world but for those (HK)whom you have given me, for (HL)they are yours. 10 (HM)All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and (HN)I am glorified in them. 11 And I am no longer in the world, but (HO)they are in the world, and (HP)I am coming to you. (HQ)Holy Father, (HR)keep them in your name, (HS)which you have given me, (HT)that they may be one, (HU)even as we are one. 12 (HV)While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have (HW)guarded them, and (HX)not one of them has been lost except (HY)the son of destruction, (HZ)that the Scripture might be fulfilled. 13 But now (IA)I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have (IB)my joy fulfilled in themselves. 14 (IC)I have given them your word, and (ID)the world has hated them (IE)because they are not of the world, (IF)just as I am not of the world. 15 I (IG)do not ask that you (IH)take them out of the world, but that you (II)keep them from (IJ)the evil one.[k] 16 (IK)They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 (IL)Sanctify them[l] in the truth; (IM)your word is truth. 18 (IN)As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And (IO)for their sake (IP)I consecrate myself,[m] that they also (IQ)may be sanctified[n] in truth.

20 “I do not (IR)ask for these only, but also for those (IS)who will believe in me through their word, 21 (IT)that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that (IU)they also may be in (IV)us, so that the world (IW)may believe that you have sent me. 22 (IX)The glory that you have given me (IY)I have given to them, (IZ)that they may be one even as we are one, 23 (JA)I in them and you in me, (JB)that they may become perfectly one, (JC)so that the world may know that you sent me and (JD)loved them even as (JE)you loved me. 24 Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be (JF)with me (JG)where I am, (JH)to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me (JI)before the foundation of the world. 25 (JJ)O righteous Father, even though (JK)the world does not know you, I know you, and these know that you have sent me. 26 (JL)I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love (JM)with which you have loved me may be in them, and (JN)I in them.”
