⁴ *got up from supper, and *laid aside His garments; and taking a towel, He ^(A)girded Himself.

Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet

⁵ Then He *poured water into the basin, and began to ^(B)wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. ⁶ So He *came to Simon Peter. He *said to Him, “Lord, do You wash my feet?” ⁷ Jesus answered and said to him, “What I do you do not realize now, but you will understand ^(C)hereafter.” ⁸ Peter *said to Him, “Never shall You wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “^(D)If I do not wash you, ^(E)you have no part with Me.” ⁹ Simon Peter *said to Him, “Lord, then wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head.” ¹⁰ Jesus *said to him, “He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and ^(F)you are clean, but not all of you.” ¹¹ For ^(G)He knew the one who was betraying Him; for this reason He said, “Not all of you are clean.”

¹² So when He had washed their feet, and ^(H)taken His garments and reclined at the table again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? ¹³ You call Me ^(I)Teacher and ^(J)Lord; and ^[a]you are right, for so I am. ¹⁴ If I then, ^(K)the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. ¹⁵ For I gave you ^(L)an example that you also should do as I did to you. ¹⁶ Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(M)a slave is not greater than his master, nor is ^(N)one who is sent greater than the one who sent him. ¹⁷ If you know these things, you are ^(O)blessed if you do them. ^18 (P)I do not speak of all of you. I know the ones I have ^(Q)chosen; but it is ^(R)that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘^(S)He who eats My bread has lifted up his heel against Me.’ ¹⁹ From now on ^(T)I am telling you before it comes to pass, so that when it does occur, you may believe that ^(U)I am He. ²⁰ Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(V)he who receives whomever I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.”

Jesus Predicts His Betrayal

²¹ When Jesus had said this, He ^(W)became troubled in spirit, and testified and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, that ^(X)one of you will ^[b]betray Me.” ²² The disciples began looking at one another, ^(Y)at a loss to know of which one He was speaking. ²³ There was reclining on ^(Z)Jesus’ bosom one of His disciples, ^(AA)whom Jesus loved. ²⁴ So Simon Peter *gestured to him, and *said to him, “Tell us who it is of whom He is speaking.” ²⁵ He, ^(AB)leaning back thus on Jesus’ bosom, *said to Him, “Lord, who is it?” ²⁶ Jesus then *answered, “That is the one for whom I shall dip the morsel and give it to him.” So when He had dipped the morsel, He *took and *gave it to Judas, ^(AC)the son of Simon Iscariot. ²⁷ After the morsel, ^(AD)Satan then ^(AE)entered into him. Therefore Jesus *said to him, “What you do, do quickly.” ²⁸ Now no one of those reclining at the table knew for what purpose He had said this to him. ²⁹ For some were supposing, because Judas ^(AF)had the money box, that Jesus was saying to him, “Buy the things we have need of ^(AG)for the feast”; or else, that he should ^(AH)give something to the poor. ³⁰ So after receiving the morsel he went out immediately; and ^(AI)it was night.

³¹ Therefore when he had gone out, Jesus *said, “Now ^[c]is ^(AJ)the Son of Man ^(AK)glorified, and ^(AL)God ^[d]is glorified in Him; ^32 [e]if God is glorified in Him, ^(AM)God will also glorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him immediately. ^33 (AN)Little children, I am with you ^(AO)a little while longer. ^(AP)You will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’ ³⁴ A ^(AQ)new commandment I give to you, ^(AR)that you love one another, ^(AS)even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. ^35 (AT)By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

³⁶ Simon Peter *said to Him, “Lord, where are You going?” Jesus answered, “^(AU)Where I go, you cannot follow Me now; but ^(AV)you will follow later.” ³⁷ Peter *said to Him, “Lord, why can I not follow You right now? ^(AW)I will lay down my life for You.” ³⁸ Jesus *answered, “Will you lay down your life for Me? Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(AX)a rooster will not crow until you deny Me three times.

Disciples’ Relation to Each Other

¹² “This is ^(A)My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you.

God Is Love

^7 (A)Beloved, let us ^(B)love one another, for love is from God; and ^(C)everyone who loves is ^[a](D)born of God and ^(E)knows God.

^11 (A)Beloved, if God so loved us, ^(B)we also ought to love one another. ^12 (C)No one has seen God at any time; if we love one another, God abides in us, and His ^(D)love is perfected in us. ^13 (E)By this we know that we abide in Him and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit. ¹⁴ We have seen and ^(F)testify that the Father has ^(G)sent the Son to be the Savior of the world.

^15 (H)Whoever confesses that ^(I)Jesus is the Son of God, God ^(J)abides in him, and he in God. ^16 (K)We have come to know and have believed the love which God has ^[a](L)for us. ^(M)God is love, and the one who ^(N)abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. ¹⁷ By this, ^(O)love is perfected with us, so that we may have ^(P)confidence in ^(Q)the day of judgment; because ^(R)as He is, so also are we in this world. ¹⁸ There is no fear in love; but ^(S)perfect love casts out fear, because fear ^[b]involves punishment, and the one who fears is not ^(T)perfected in love. ^19 (U)We love, because He first loved us. ^20 (V)If someone says, “I love God,” and ^(W)hates his brother, he is a ^(X)liar; for ^(Y)the one who does not love his brother whom he has seen, ^(Z)cannot love God whom he has not seen. ²¹ And ^(AA)this commandment we have from Him, that the one who loves God ^(AB)should love his brother also.

⁵ Now I ask you, lady, ^(A)not as though I were writing to you a new commandment, but the one which we have had ^(B)from the beginning, that we ^(C)love one another.
