²¹ As they were eating, He said, “^(A)Truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me.” ²² Being deeply grieved, they ^[a]each one began to say to Him, “Surely not I, Lord?” ²³ And He answered, “^(B)He who dipped his hand with Me in the bowl is the one who will betray Me. ²⁴ The Son of Man is to go, ^(C)just as it is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! ^(D)It would have been good ^[b]for that man if he had not been born.” ²⁵ And ^(E)Judas, who was betraying Him, said, “Surely it is not I, ^(F)Rabbi?” Jesus *said to him, “^(G)You have said it yourself.”

The Lord’s Supper Instituted

^26 (H)While they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and ^[c](I)after a blessing, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” ²⁷ And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; ²⁸ for ^(J)this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for ^(K)many for forgiveness of sins. ²⁹ But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.”

^30 (L)After singing a hymn, they went out to ^(M)the Mount of Olives.

³¹ Then Jesus *said to them, “You will all ^[d](N)fall away because of Me this night, for it is written, ‘^(O)I will strike down the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be ^(P)scattered.’ ³² But after I have been raised, ^(Q)I will go ahead of you to Galilee.” ³³ But Peter said to Him, “Even though all may ^[e]fall away because of You, I will never fall away.” ³⁴ Jesus said to him, “^(R)Truly I say to you that ^(S)this very night, before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” ³⁵ Peter *said to Him, “^(T)Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You.” All the disciples said the same thing too.

The Garden of Gethsemane

^36 (U)Then Jesus *came with them to a place called ^(V)Gethsemane, and *said to His disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” ³⁷ And He took with Him ^(W)Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be grieved and distressed. ³⁸ Then He *said to them, “^(X)My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and ^(Y)keep watch with Me.”

³⁹ And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let ^(Z)this cup pass from Me; ^(AA)yet not as I will, but as You will.” ⁴⁰ And He *came to the disciples and *found them sleeping, and *said to Peter, “So, you men could not ^(AB)keep watch with Me for one hour? ^41 (AC)Keep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation; ^(AD)the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

⁴² He went away again a second time and prayed, saying, “My Father, if this ^(AE)cannot pass away unless I drink it, ^(AF)Your will be done.” ⁴³ Again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. ⁴⁴ And He left them again, and went away and prayed a third time, saying the same thing once more. ⁴⁵ Then He *came to the disciples and *said to them, “^[f]Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, ^(AG)the hour is at hand and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. ⁴⁶ Get up, let us be going; behold, the one who betrays Me is at hand!”

Jesus’ Betrayal and Arrest

^47 (AH)While He was still speaking, behold, ^(AI)Judas, one of the twelve, came up ^[g]accompanied by a large crowd with swords and clubs, who came from the chief priests and elders of the people. ⁴⁸ Now he who was betraying Him gave them a sign, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the one; seize Him.” ⁴⁹ Immediately Judas went to Jesus and said, “Hail, ^(AJ)Rabbi!” and kissed Him. ⁵⁰ And Jesus said to him, “^(AK)Friend, do what you have come for.” Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and seized Him.

⁵¹ And behold, ^(AL)one of those who were with Jesus ^[h]reached and drew out his ^(AM)sword, and struck the ^(AN)slave of the high priest and ^[i]cut off his ear. ⁵² Then Jesus *said to him, “Put your sword back into its place; for ^(AO)all those who take up the sword shall perish by the sword. ⁵³ Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve ^[j](AP)legions of ^(AQ)angels? ⁵⁴ How then will ^(AR)the Scriptures be fulfilled, which say that it must happen this way?”

⁵⁵ At that time Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would against a robber? ^(AS)Every day I used to sit in the temple teaching and you did not seize Me. ⁵⁶ But all this has taken place to fulfill ^(AT)the Scriptures of the prophets.” Then all the disciples left Him and fled.

Jesus before Caiaphas

^57 (AU)Those who had seized Jesus led Him away to ^(AV)Caiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered together. ⁵⁸ But ^(AW)Peter was following Him at a distance as far as the ^(AX)courtyard of the high priest, and entered in, and sat down with the ^[k](AY)officers to see the outcome.

⁵⁹ Now the chief priests and the whole ^[l](AZ)Council kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus, so that they might put Him to death. ⁶⁰ They did not find any, even though many false witnesses came forward. But later on ^(BA)two came forward, ⁶¹ and said, “This man stated, ‘^(BB)I am able to destroy the ^[m]temple of God and to rebuild it ^[n]in three days.’” ⁶² The high priest stood up and said to Him, “Do You not answer? What is it that these men are testifying against You?” ⁶³ But ^(BC)Jesus kept silent. ^(BD)And the high priest said to Him, “I ^[o](BE)adjure You by ^(BF)the living God, that You tell us whether You are ^[p]the Christ, ^(BG)the Son of God.” ⁶⁴ Jesus *said to him, “^(BH)You have said it yourself; nevertheless I tell you, ^[q]hereafter you will see ^(BI)the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power, and ^(BJ)coming on the clouds of heaven.”

⁶⁵ Then the high priest ^(BK)tore his ^[r]robes and said, “He has blasphemed! What further need do we have of witnesses? Behold, you have now heard the blasphemy; ⁶⁶ what do you think?” They answered, “^(BL)He deserves death!”

^67 (BM)Then they ^(BN)spat in His face and beat Him with their fists; and others ^[s]slapped Him, ⁶⁸ and said, “^(BO)Prophesy to us, You ^[t]Christ; who is the one who hit You?”

Peter’s Denials

^69 (BP)Now Peter was sitting outside in the ^(BQ)courtyard, and a servant-girl came to him and said, “You too were with Jesus the Galilean.” ⁷⁰ But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you are talking about.” ⁷¹ When he had gone out to the gateway, another servant-girl saw him and *said to those who were there, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.” ⁷² And again he denied it with an oath, “I do not know the man.” ⁷³ A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, “Surely you too are one of them; ^(BR)for even the way you talk ^[u]gives you away.” ⁷⁴ Then he began to curse and swear, “I do not know the man!” And immediately a rooster crowed. ⁷⁵ And Peter remembered the word which Jesus had said, “^(BS)Before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.

¹⁸ As they were reclining at the table and eating, Jesus said, “Truly I say to you that one of you will ^[a]betray Me—^[b]one who is eating with Me.” ¹⁹ They began to be grieved and to say to Him one by one, “Surely not I?” ²⁰ And He said to them, “It is one of the twelve, ^[c]one who dips with Me in the bowl. ²¹ For the Son of Man is to go just as it is written of Him; but woe to that man ^[d]by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! The Lord’s Supper

Jesus in Gethsemane

^32 (L)They *came to a place named Gethsemane; and He *said to His disciples, “Sit here until I have prayed.” ³³ And He *took with Him Peter and ^[j]James and John, and began to be very ^(M)distressed and troubled. ³⁴ And He *said to them, “^(N)My soul is deeply grieved to the point of death; remain here and keep watch.” ³⁵ And He went a little beyond them, and fell to the ground and began to pray that if it were possible, ^(O)the hour might ^[k]pass Him by. ³⁶ And He was saying, “^(P)Abba! Father! All things are possible for You; remove this cup from Me; ^(Q)yet not what I will, but what You will.” ³⁷ And He *came and *found them sleeping, and *said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour? ^38 (R)Keep watching and praying that you may not come into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” ³⁹ Again He went away and prayed, saying the same ^[l]words. ⁴⁰ And again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy; and they did not know what to answer Him. ⁴¹ And He *came the third time, and *said to them, “^[m]Are you still sleeping and resting? It is enough; ^(S)the hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being ^[n]betrayed into the hands of sinners. ⁴² Get up, let us be going; behold, the one who betrays Me is at hand!”

Betrayal and Arrest

^43 (T)Immediately while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, *came up ^[o]accompanied by a crowd with swords and clubs, who were from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. ⁴⁴ Now he who was betraying Him had given them a signal, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the one; seize Him and lead Him away ^[p]under guard.” ⁴⁵ After coming, Judas immediately went to Him, saying, “^(U)Rabbi!” and kissed Him. ⁴⁶ They laid hands on Him and seized Him. ⁴⁷ But one of those who stood by drew his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest and ^[q]cut off his ear. ⁴⁸ And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me, as you would against a robber? ⁴⁹ Every day I was with you ^(V)in the temple teaching, and you did not seize Me; but this has taken place to fulfill the Scriptures.” ⁵⁰ And they all left Him and fled.

⁵¹ A young man was following Him, wearing nothing but a linen sheet over his naked body; and they *seized him. ⁵² But he ^[r]pulled free of the linen sheet and escaped naked.

Jesus before His Accusers

^53 (W)They led Jesus away to the high priest; and all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes *gathered together. ⁵⁴ Peter had followed Him at a distance, ^(X)right into ^(Y)the courtyard of the high priest; and he was sitting with the ^[s]officers and ^(Z)warming himself at the ^[t]fire. ⁵⁵ Now the chief priests and the whole ^[u](AA)Council kept trying to obtain testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, and they were not finding any. ⁵⁶ For many were giving false testimony against Him, but their testimony was not consistent. ⁵⁷ Some stood up and began to give false testimony against Him, saying, ⁵⁸ “We heard Him say, ‘^(AB)I will destroy this ^[v]temple made with hands, and in three days I will build another made without hands.’” ⁵⁹ Not even in this respect was their testimony consistent. ⁶⁰ The high priest stood up and came forward and questioned Jesus, saying, “Do You not answer? ^[w]What is it that these men are testifying against You?” ^61 (AC)But He kept silent and did not answer. ^(AD)Again the high priest was questioning Him, and ^[x]saying to Him, “Are You ^[y]the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?” ⁶² And Jesus said, “I am; and you shall see ^(AE)the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power, and ^(AF)coming with the clouds of heaven.” ^63 (AG)Tearing his clothes, the high priest *said, “What further need do we have of witnesses? ⁶⁴ You have heard the ^(AH)blasphemy; how does it seem to you?” And they all condemned Him to be deserving of death. ⁶⁵ Some began to ^(AI)spit at Him, and ^[z](AJ)to blindfold Him, and to beat Him with their fists, and to say to Him, “^(AK)Prophesy!” And the officers ^[aa]received Him with ^[ab]slaps in the face.

Peter’s Denials

^66 (AL)As Peter was below in ^(AM)the courtyard, one of the servant-girls of the high priest *came, ⁶⁷ and seeing Peter ^(AN)warming himself, she looked at him and *said, “You also were with Jesus the ^(AO)Nazarene.” ⁶⁸ But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you are talking about.” And he ^(AP)went out onto the ^[ac]porch.^{[ad] 69} The servant-girl saw him, and began once more to say to the bystanders, “This is one of them!” ⁷⁰ But again ^(AQ)he denied it. And after a little while the bystanders were again saying to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, ^(AR)for you are a Galilean too.” ⁷¹ But he began to ^[ae]curse and swear, “I do not know this man you are talking about!” ⁷² Immediately a rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had made the remark to him, “Before ^(AS)a rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” ^[af]And he began to weep.

^21 (A)But behold, the hand of the one betraying Me is with ^[a]Mine on the table. ²² For indeed, the Son of Man is going ^(B)as it has been determined; but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!” ²³ And they began to discuss among themselves which one of them it might be who was going to do this thing.

Who Is Greatest

²⁴ And there arose also ^(C)a dispute among them as to which one of them was regarded to be greatest. ^25 (D)And He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who have authority over them are called ‘Benefactors.’ ²⁶ But it is not this way with you, ^(E)but the one who is the greatest among you must become like ^(F)the youngest, and the leader like the servant. ²⁷ For ^(G)who is greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? But ^(H)I am among you as the one who serves.

²⁸ “You are those who have stood by Me in My ^(I)trials; ²⁹ and just as My Father has granted Me a ^(J)kingdom, I grant you ³⁰ that you may ^(K)eat and drink at My table in My ^(L)kingdom, and ^(M)you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

³¹ “Simon, Simon, behold, ^(N)Satan has ^[b]demanded permission to ^(O)sift you like wheat; ³² but I ^(P)have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned again, ^(Q)strengthen your brothers.” ^33 (R)But he said to Him, “Lord, with You I am ready to go both to prison and to death!” ³⁴ And He said, “I say to you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times that you know Me.”

³⁵ And He said to them, “^(S)When I sent you out without money belt and bag and sandals, you did not lack anything, did you?” They said, “No, nothing.” ³⁶ And He said to them, “But now, ^[c]whoever has a money belt is to take it along, likewise also a bag, and ^[d]whoever has no sword is to sell his ^[e]coat and buy one. ³⁷ For I tell you that this which is written must be fulfilled in Me, ‘^(T)And He was numbered with transgressors’; for ^(U)that which refers to Me has its ^[f]fulfillment.” ³⁸ They said, “Lord, look, here are two ^(V)swords.” And He said to them, “It is enough.”

The Garden of Gethsemane

^39 (W)And He came out and proceeded ^(X)as was His custom to ^(Y)the Mount of Olives; and the disciples also followed Him. ^40 (Z)When He arrived at the place, He said to them, “^(AA)Pray that you may not enter into temptation.” ⁴¹ And He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and He ^(AB)knelt down and began to pray, ⁴² saying, “Father, if You are willing, remove this ^(AC)cup from Me; ^(AD)yet not My will, but Yours be done.” ^43 [g]Now an ^(AE)angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him. ⁴⁴ And ^(AF)being in agony He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground. ⁴⁵ When He rose from prayer, He came to the disciples and found them sleeping from sorrow, ⁴⁶ and said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and ^(AG)pray that you may not enter into temptation.”

Jesus Betrayed by Judas

^47 (AH)While He was still speaking, behold, a crowd came, and the one called Judas, one of the twelve, was preceding them; and he approached Jesus to kiss Him. ⁴⁸ But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?” ⁴⁹ When those who were around Him saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, shall we strike with the ^(AI)sword?” ⁵⁰ And one of them struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear. ⁵¹ But Jesus answered and said, “^[h]Stop! No more of this.” And He touched his ear and healed him. ⁵² Then Jesus said to the chief priests and ^(AJ)officers of the temple and elders who had come against Him, “Have you come out with swords and clubs ^(AK)as you would against a robber? ⁵³ While I was with you daily in the temple, you did not lay hands on Me; but ^[i]this hour and the power of darkness are yours.”

Jesus’ Arrest

^54 (AL)Having arrested Him, they led Him away and brought Him to the house of the high priest; but ^(AM)Peter was following at a distance. ^55 (AN)After they had kindled a fire in the middle of ^(AO)the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter was sitting among them. ⁵⁶ And a servant-girl, seeing him as he sat in the firelight and looking intently at him, said, “This man was with Him too.” ⁵⁷ But he denied it, saying, “Woman, I do not know Him.” ⁵⁸ A little later, ^(AP)another saw him and said, “You are one of them too!” But Peter said, “Man, I am not!” ⁵⁹ After about an hour had passed, another man began to insist, saying, “Certainly this man also was with Him, ^(AQ)for he is a Galilean too.” ⁶⁰ But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. ^61 (AR)The Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had told him, “^(AS)Before a rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.” ⁶² And he went out and wept bitterly.

^63 (AT)Now the men who were holding ^[j]Jesus in custody were mocking Him and beating Him, ⁶⁴ and they blindfolded Him and were asking Him, saying, “^(AU)Prophesy, who is the one who hit You?” ⁶⁵ And they were saying many other things against Him, ^(AV)blaspheming.

Jesus before the Sanhedrin

^66 (AW)When it was day, ^(AX)the ^[k]Council of elders of the people assembled, both chief priests and scribes, and they led Him away to their ^(AY)council chamber, saying, ⁶⁷ “^(AZ)If You are the ^[l]Christ, tell us.” But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe; ⁶⁸ and if I ask a question, you will not answer. ^69 (BA)But from now on ^(BB)the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.” ⁷⁰ And they all said, “Are You ^(BC)the Son of God, then?” And He said to them, “^[m](BD)Yes, I am.” ⁷¹ Then they said, “What further need do we have of testimony? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth.”

^18 (A)I do not speak of all of you. I know the ones I have ^(B)chosen; but it is ^(C)that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘^(D)He who eats My bread has lifted up his heel against Me.’

²² The disciples began looking at one another, ^(A)at a loss to know of which one He was speaking.

²⁶ Jesus then *answered, “That is the one for whom I shall dip the morsel and give it to him.” So when He had dipped the morsel, He *took and *gave it to Judas, ^(A)the son of Simon Iscariot.
