33 Dear children, I will be with you only a little longer. And as I told the Jewish leaders, you will search for me, but you can’t come where I am going. 34 So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. 35 Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”

36 Simon Peter asked, “Lord, where are you going?”

And Jesus replied, “You can’t go with me now, but you will follow me later.”

37 “But why can’t I come now, Lord?” he asked. “I’m ready to die for you.”

38 Jesus answered, “Die for me? I tell you the truth, Peter—before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that you even know me.

Jesus, the Way to the Father

14 “Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. There is more than enough room in my Father’s home.[a] If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you?[b] When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am. And you know the way to where I am going.”

“No, we don’t know, Lord,” Thomas said. “We have no idea where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. If you had really known me, you would know who my Father is.[c] From now on, you do know him and have seen him!”

Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.”

Jesus replied, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and yet you still don’t know who I am? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father! So why are you asking me to show him to you? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words I speak are not my own, but my Father who lives in me does his work through me. 11 Just believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me. Or at least believe because of the work you have seen me do.

12 “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father. 13 You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father. 14 Yes, ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it!

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

15 “If you love me, obey[d] my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate,[e] who will never leave you. 17 He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.[f] 18 No, I will not abandon you as orphans—I will come to you. 19 Soon the world will no longer see me, but you will see me. Since I live, you also will live. 20 When I am raised to life again, you will know that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21 Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them. And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them.”

22 Judas (not Judas Iscariot, but the other disciple with that name) said to him, “Lord, why are you going to reveal yourself only to us and not to the world at large?”

23 Jesus replied, “All who love me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and we will come and make our home with each of them. 24 Anyone who doesn’t love me will not obey me. And remember, my words are not my own. What I am telling you is from the Father who sent me. 25 I am telling you these things now while I am still with you. 26 But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.

27 “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid. 28 Remember what I told you: I am going away, but I will come back to you again. If you really loved me, you would be happy that I am going to the Father, who is greater than I am. 29 I have told you these things before they happen so that when they do happen, you will believe.

30 “I don’t have much more time to talk to you, because the ruler of this world approaches. He has no power over me, 31 but I will do what the Father requires of me, so that the world will know that I love the Father. Come, let’s be going.

Jesus, the True Vine

15 “I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more. You have already been pruned and purified by the message I have given you. Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me.

“Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. Anyone who does not remain in me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers. Such branches are gathered into a pile to be burned. But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted! When you produce much fruit, you are my true disciples. This brings great glory to my Father.

“I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love. 10 When you obey my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. 11 I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow! 12 This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. 13 There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you slaves, because a master doesn’t confide in his slaves. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me. 16 You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name. 17 This is my command: Love each other.

The World’s Hatred

18 “If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first. 19 The world would love you as one of its own if you belonged to it, but you are no longer part of the world. I chose you to come out of the world, so it hates you. 20 Do you remember what I told you? ‘A slave is not greater than the master.’ Since they persecuted me, naturally they will persecute you. And if they had listened to me, they would listen to you. 21 They will do all this to you because of me, for they have rejected the one who sent me. 22 They would not be guilty if I had not come and spoken to them. But now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 Anyone who hates me also hates my Father. 24 If I hadn’t done such miraculous signs among them that no one else could do, they would not be guilty. But as it is, they have seen everything I did, yet they still hate me and my Father. 25 This fulfills what is written in their Scriptures[g]: ‘They hated me without cause.’

26 “But I will send you the Advocate[h]—the Spirit of truth. He will come to you from the Father and will testify all about me. 27 And you must also testify about me because you have been with me from the beginning of my ministry.

16 “I have told you these things so that you won’t abandon your faith. For you will be expelled from the synagogues, and the time is coming when those who kill you will think they are doing a holy service for God. This is because they have never known the Father or me. Yes, I’m telling you these things now, so that when they happen, you will remember my warning. I didn’t tell you earlier because I was going to be with you for a while longer.

The Work of the Holy Spirit

“But now I am going away to the one who sent me, and not one of you is asking where I am going. Instead, you grieve because of what I’ve told you. But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate[i] won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment. The world’s sin is that it refuses to believe in me. 10 Righteousness is available because I go to the Father, and you will see me no more. 11 Judgment will come because the ruler of this world has already been judged.

12 “There is so much more I want to tell you, but you can’t bear it now.

Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now,(G) but you will follow later.”(H)

37 Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”

38 Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!(I)

Jesus Comforts His Disciples

14 “Do not let your hearts be troubled.(J) You believe(K) in God[a];(L) believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there(M) to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back(N) and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.(O) You know the way to the place where I am going.”

Jesus the Way to the Father

Thomas(P) said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

Jesus answered, “I am(Q) the way(R) and the truth(S) and the life.(T) No one comes to the Father except through me.(U) If you really know me, you will know[b] my Father as well.(V) From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”

Philip(W) said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”

Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.(X) How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me?(Y) The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority.(Z) Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.(AA) 12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes(AB) in me will do the works I have been doing,(AC) and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask(AD) in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

15 “If you love me, keep my commands.(AE) 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate(AF) to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth.(AG) The world cannot accept him,(AH) because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be[c] in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans;(AI) I will come to you.(AJ) 19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me.(AK) Because I live, you also will live.(AL) 20 On that day(AM) you will realize that I am in my Father,(AN) and you are in me, and I am in you.(AO) 21 Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me.(AP) The one who loves me will be loved by my Father,(AQ) and I too will love them and show myself to them.”

22 Then Judas(AR) (not Judas Iscariot) said, “But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?”(AS)

23 Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching.(AT) My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.(AU) 24 Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.(AV)

25 “All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Advocate,(AW) the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name,(AX) will teach you all things(AY) and will remind you of everything I have said to you.(AZ) 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.(BA) I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled(BB) and do not be afraid.

28 “You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’(BC) If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father,(BD) for the Father is greater than I.(BE) 29 I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe.(BF) 30 I will not say much more to you, for the prince of this world(BG) is coming. He has no hold over me, 31 but he comes so that the world may learn that I love the Father and do exactly what my Father has commanded me.(BH)

“Come now; let us leave.

The Vine and the Branches

15 “I am(BI) the true vine,(BJ) and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit,(BK) while every branch that does bear fruit(BL) he prunes[d] so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.(BM) Remain in me, as I also remain in you.(BN) No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit;(BO) apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.(BP) If you remain in me(BQ) and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.(BR) This is to my Father’s glory,(BS) that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.(BT)

“As the Father has loved me,(BU) so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands,(BV) you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.(BW) 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.(BX) 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.(BY) 14 You are my friends(BZ) if you do what I command.(CA) 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.(CB) 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you(CC) so that you might go and bear fruit(CD)—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.(CE) 17 This is my command: Love each other.(CF)

The World Hates the Disciples

18 “If the world hates you,(CG) keep in mind that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you(CH) out of the world. That is why the world hates you.(CI) 20 Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’[e](CJ) If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.(CK) If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. 21 They will treat you this way because of my name,(CL) for they do not know the one who sent me.(CM) 22 If I had not come and spoken to them,(CN) they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.(CO) 23 Whoever hates me hates my Father as well. 24 If I had not done among them the works no one else did,(CP) they would not be guilty of sin.(CQ) As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. 25 But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law:(CR) ‘They hated me without reason.’[f](CS)

The Work of the Holy Spirit

26 “When the Advocate(CT) comes, whom I will send to you from the Father(CU)—the Spirit of truth(CV) who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me.(CW) 27 And you also must testify,(CX) for you have been with me from the beginning.(CY)

16 “All this(CZ) I have told you so that you will not fall away.(DA) They will put you out of the synagogue;(DB) in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God.(DC) They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.(DD) I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember(DE) that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you,(DF) but now I am going to him who sent me.(DG) None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’(DH) Rather, you are filled with grief(DI) because I have said these things. But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate(DJ) will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.(DK) When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin,(DL) because people do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness,(DM) because I am going to the Father,(DN) where you can see me no longer; 11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world(DO) now stands condemned.

12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.(DP)
