14 And (A)the Word (B)became flesh and (C)dwelt among us, (D)and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of (E)grace and (F)truth. 15 ((G)John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, (H)‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’”) 16 And from (I)his fullness we have all received, (J)grace upon grace. 17 For (K)the law was given through Moses; (L)grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 (M)No one has ever seen God; (N)the only God,[a] who is at the Father's side,[b] (O)he has made him known.

The Testimony of John the Baptist

19 And this is the (P)testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, (Q)“Who are you?” 20 (R)He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” 21 And they asked him, “What then? (S)Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you (T)the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” 22 So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” 23 He said, “I am (U)the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight[c] the way of the Lord’, as the prophet Isaiah said.”

24 (Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.) 25 They asked him, (V)“Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” 26 John answered them, (W)“I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know, 27 even (X)he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.” 28 These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

Behold, the Lamb of God

29 The next day he saw Jesus coming towards him, and said, “Behold, (Y)the Lamb of God, who (Z)takes away the sin (AA)of the world! 30 This is he of whom I said, (AB)‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’ 31 I myself did not know him, but (AC)for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.” 32 And John (AD)bore witness: (AE)“I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and (AF)it remained on him. 33 I myself did not know him, but (AG)he who sent me to baptize (AH)with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, (AI)this is he who baptizes (AJ)with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.”

John the Baptist Denies Being the Messiah

19 Now this was John’s(M) testimony when the Jewish leaders[b](N) in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Messiah.”(O)

21 They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?”(P)

He said, “I am not.”

“Are you the Prophet?”(Q)

He answered, “No.”

22 Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness,(R) ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’”[c](S)

24 Now the Pharisees who had been sent 25 questioned him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”

26 “I baptize with[d] water,”(T) John replied, “but among you stands one you do not know. 27 He is the one who comes after me,(U) the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.”(V)

28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan,(W) where John was baptizing.

John Testifies About Jesus

29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God,(X) who takes away the sin of the world!(Y) 30 This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’(Z) 31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.”

32 Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.(AA) 33 And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water(AB) told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’(AC) 34 I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.”[e](AD)
