16 Detta har jag sagt er för att ni inte ska komma på fall. 2 (A) De kommer att utesluta er ur synagogorna, och det kommer en tid när den som dödar er ska tro att han tjänar Gud. 3 (B) Det kommer de att göra därför att de varken känner Fadern eller mig. 4 (C) Men jag har sagt det till er för att ni, när deras tid kommer, ska minnas att jag sade det till er. Jag sade det inte till er från början, för då var jag hos er.
Sanningens Ande
5 (D) Nu går jag till honom som har sänt mig, och ingen av er frågar mig: Vart går du? 6 Men när jag nu har sagt er detta, är era hjärtan fyllda av sorg. 7 (E) Men jag säger er sanningen: Det är för ert bästa som jag går bort. För om jag inte går bort, kommer inte Hjälparen till er. Men när jag går bort ska jag sända honom till er.
8 Och när han kommer ska han överbevisa världen om synd och rättfärdighet och dom. 9 (F) Om synd: de tror inte på mig. 10 (G) Om rättfärdighet: jag går till Fadern och ni ser mig inte längre. 11 (H) Om dom: denna världens furste är dömd.
12 (I) Jag har mycket mer att säga er, men ni kan inte bära det nu. 13 (J) Men när han kommer, sanningens Ande, då ska han leda er in i hela sanningen. Han ska inte tala av sig själv utan bara tala det han hör, och han ska förkunna för er vad som kommer att ske. 14 Han ska förhärliga mig, för han ska ta av det som är mitt och förkunna för er. 15 (K) Allt som Fadern har är mitt. Därför sade jag att han ska ta av det som är mitt och förkunna för er.
Sorg och glädje
16 (L) En kort tid och ni ser mig inte längre, ännu en kort tid och ni kommer att se mig." 17 Några av hans lärjungar sade då till varandra: "Vad menar han när han säger till oss: En kort tid och ni ser mig inte längre, ännu en kort tid och ni kommer att se mig? Och att han går till Fadern?" 18 De frågade: "Vad menar han med en kort tid? Vi förstår inte vad han säger."
19 Jesus märkte att de ville fråga honom, och han sade till dem: "Ni frågar varandra om det jag sade: En kort tid och ni ser mig inte, ännu en kort tid och ni kommer att se mig. 20 (M) Jag säger er sanningen: Ni kommer att gråta och jämra er, men världen ska glädja sig. Ni kommer att sörja, men er sorg ska vändas i glädje. 21 (N) När en kvinna ska föda har hon det svårt, för hennes stund har kommit. Men när hon har fött barnet, minns hon inte längre smärtan i sin glädje över att en människa är född till världen. 22 (O) Nu har ni också det svårt, men jag ska se er igen. Då ska era hjärtan glädjas, och ingen ska ta er glädje ifrån er.
Bön i Jesu namn
23 (P) Den dagen kommer ni inte att fråga mig om något. Jag säger er sanningen: Vad ni ber Fadern om i mitt namn, det ska han ge er. 24 (Q) Hittills har ni inte bett om något i mitt namn. Be och ni ska få, så att er glädje blir fullkomlig.
25 (R) Detta har jag talat till er i liknelser. Men det kommer en tid när jag inte längre ska tala till er i liknelser, utan öppet förkunna för er om Fadern. 26 Den dagen ska ni be i mitt namn. Jag säger inte att jag ska be till Fadern för er. 27 (S) Fadern själv älskar er, för ni har älskat mig och tror att jag har utgått från Gud. 28 Jag har utgått från Fadern och kommit till världen. Nu lämnar jag världen och går till Fadern."
29 Då sade hans lärjungar: "Nu talar du öppet och inte i liknelser! 30 Nu vet vi att du vet allt och inte är beroende av att någon frågar dig. Därför tror vi att du har utgått från Gud." 31 Jesus svarade: "Nu tror ni. 32 (T) Men det kommer en tid, och den är redan här, när ni ska skingras var och en åt sitt håll och lämna mig ensam. Men jag är inte ensam, för Fadern är med mig. 33 (U) Detta har jag sagt er för att ni ska ha frid i mig. I världen får ni lida, men var frimodiga: jag har övervunnit världen."

16 Jag har sagt er detta för att ni inte ska tveka inför allt som ligger framför er.
2 Ni kommer att bli utestängda från synagogorna, ja, det ska gå så långt att de som dödar er ska tycka att de tjänar Gud.
3 Och att de gör det beror på att de aldrig har känt Fadern eller mig.
4 Ja, jag säger er detta nu så att ni inte blir överraskade när det händer. Jag har inte sagt det till er tidigare eftersom jag hela tiden har varit hos er.
Jesus undervisar om den helige Ande
5 Men nu ska jag gå bort till den som sände mig, och ingen av er frågar varför jag går bort.
6 Ni är bedrövade och sörjer över vad jag sagt er.
7 Men det är faktiskt bäst för er att jag går bort, annars kan inte den komma i mitt ställe som ska hjälpa och trösta er. Om jag går bort så kommer han, för jag ska sända honom till er.
8 Och när han har kommit ska han öppna människornas ögon så att de ser sin synd och förstår Guds rättfärdighet och hans domar.
9 För deras synd består i att de inte tror på mig.
10 Guds rättfärdighet visar sig däri att jag går till Fadern, och ni ser mig inte mer.
11 Och Guds dom består i att denna världens furste redan är dömd.
12 Det är så mycket jag vill säga er, men ni kan inte förstå det nu.
13 När den helige Ande - som är sanningen - kommer, ska han leda er fram till hela sanningen. Han ska inte tala i egen sak, utan endast förmedla vad han har hört. Också vad som väntar er i framtiden ska han berätta för er.
14 Han ska upphöja mig och ära mig genom att visa er min härlighet.
15 Allt vad Fadern har tillhör mig. Därför kan jag med rätta säga: Allt vad han visar er kommer från mig.
16 Snart är jag borta och ni ser mig inte längre. Men det dröjer inte länge förrän ni får se mig igen.
Jesus uppmanar lärjungarna att be i hans namn
17-18 Vad talar han om? frågade lärjungarna. Han säger ju att snart är han borta och sedan att vi ska få se honom igen. Och vad menar han med 'att gå till Fadern?' Vi vet inte vad det betyder.
19 Jesus märkte att de ville fråga om något så han sa: Ni frågar er vad jag menar?
20 Världen kommer att glädja sig över vad som ska hända mig, och ni kommer att gråta. Men er gråt ska plötsligt vändas i underbar glädje när ni ser mig igen.
21 Det blir som när en kvinna föder barn. Så fort barnet är fött glömmer hon smärtan, och hon känner djup lycka över att en människa är född till världen.
22 Ni sörjer nu, men jag ska se er igen, och då kommer ni att bli glada, och ingen kan ta den glädjen från er.
23 Då behöver ni inte fråga mig om någonting. Ni kan gå direkt till Fadern, och han ska ge er vad ni ber om därför att ni använder mitt namn.
24 Ni har inte försökt det förut, men börja nu. Be i mitt namn så ska ni få, och er glädje ska bli fullkomlig.
25 Vad jag vill säga er har jag hitintills förklarat med exempel, men den tid ska komma när detta inte längre är nödvändigt, utan jag kan tala öppet till er, utan bilder och omskrivningar och låta er veta allt om Fadern.
26 Då kan ni be i mitt namn och vända er direkt till honom. Och jag behöver inte be Fadern besvara era önskemål,
27 för Fadern själv älskar er innerligt därför att ni älskar mig och tror att jag kom från Fadern.
28 Ja, jag kom från Fadern till världen och ska lämna världen för att återvända till Fadern.
29 Äntligen talar du i klartext, sa lärjungarna, och inte i gåtor.
30 Nu förstår vi att du vet allt och inte behöver ha någon som lär dig någonting. Därför tror vi att du kommer från Gud.
31 Tror ni verkligen det? svarade Jesus.
32 Men den stund kommer, ja, den är faktiskt redan här, när ni ska skingras och återvända var och en till sitt och lämna mig ensam. Men inte ens då ska jag vara ensam för Fadern är med mig.
33 Jag har sagt er allt detta för att ni ska ha frid i era hjärtan och sinnen. Här på jorden kommer ni att möta många sorger och bedrövelser, men var vid gott mod för jag har segrat över världen.

16 “I have told you these things to keep you from stumbling. 2 They will ban you from the synagogues.(A) In fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering service(B) to God. 3 They will do these things because they haven’t known(C) the Father or Me. 4 But I have told you these things so that when their time[a] comes you may remember(D) I told them to you. I didn’t tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you.
The Counselor’s Ministry
5 “But now I am going away(E) to Him who sent Me, and not one of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’(F) 6 Yet, because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless, I am telling you the truth.(G) It is for your benefit that I go away, because if I don’t go away the Counselor will not come to you. If I go, I will send Him to you.(H) 8 When He comes, He will convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment: 9 About sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father(I) and you will no longer see Me; 11 and about judgment,(J) because the ruler of this world(K) has been judged.(L)
12 “I still have many things to tell you, but you can’t bear them now.(M) 13 When the Spirit of truth(N) comes, He will guide you into all the truth.(O) For He will not speak on His own, but He will speak whatever He hears. He will also declare to you what is to come. 14 He will glorify Me, because He will take from what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 Everything the Father(P) has is Mine.(Q) This is why I told you that He takes from what is Mine and will declare it to you.(R)
Sorrow Turned to Joy
16 “A little while(S) and you will no longer see Me;(T) again a little while and you will see Me.”[b]
17 Therefore some of His disciples said to one another, “What is this He tells us: ‘A little while and you will not see Me; again a little while and you will see Me’; and, ‘because I am going to the Father’(U)?” 18 They said, “What is this He is saying,[c] ‘A little while’? We don’t know what He’s talking about!”
19 Jesus knew they wanted to question Him, so He said to them, “Are you asking one another about what I said, ‘A little while and you will not see Me; again a little while and you will see Me’?
20 “I assure you: You will weep and wail,(V) but the world will rejoice. You will become sorrowful,(W) but your sorrow will turn to joy. 21 When a woman is in labor she has pain(X) because her time has come. But when she has given birth to a child,(Y) she no longer remembers the suffering because of the joy that a person has been born into the world. 22 So you also have sorrow[d] now. But I will see you again. Your hearts will rejoice,(Z) and no one will rob you of your joy.(AA) 23 In that day you will not ask Me anything.
“I assure you: Anything you ask the Father in My name, He will give you.(AB) 24 Until now you have asked for nothing in My name.(AC) Ask and you will receive,(AD) so that your joy may be complete.(AE)
Jesus the Victor
25 “I have spoken these things to you in figures of speech. A time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures, but I will tell you plainly about the Father. 26 In that day you will ask(AF) in My name.(AG) I am not telling you that I will make requests to the Father on your behalf. 27 For the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved(AH) Me and have believed that I came from God.[e](AI) 28 I came from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”(AJ)
29 “Ah!” His disciples said. “Now You’re speaking plainly and not using any figurative language. 30 Now we know that You know everything(AK) and don’t need anyone to question You. By this we believe that You came from God.”(AL)
31 Jesus responded to them, “Do you now believe? 32 Look: An hour is coming, and has come,(AM) when each of you will be scattered to his own home, and you will leave Me alone. Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me.(AN) 33 I have told you these things so that in Me you may have peace. You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous! I have conquered the world.”

12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.(Q) 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth,(R) comes, he will guide you into all the truth.(S) He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine.(T) That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”
The Disciples’ Grief Will Turn to Joy
16 Jesus went on to say, “In a little while(U) you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.”(V)
17 At this, some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,’(W) and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?”(X) 18 They kept asking, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand what he is saying.”
19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, “Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me’? 20 Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn(Y) while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.(Z) 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain(AA) because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief,(AB) but I will see you again(AC) and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.(AD) 23 In that day(AE) you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.(AF) 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive,(AG) and your joy will be complete.(AH)
25 “Though I have been speaking figuratively,(AI) a time is coming(AJ) when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name.(AK) I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me(AL) and have believed that I came from God.(AM) 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”(AN)
29 Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech.(AO) 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe(AP) that you came from God.”(AQ)
31 “Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. 32 “A time is coming(AR) and in fact has come when you will be scattered,(AS) each to your own home. You will leave me all alone.(AT) Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.(AU)
33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.(AV) In this world you will have trouble.(AW) But take heart! I have overcome(AX) the world.”

14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
15 All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
16 A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.
17 Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?
18 They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith.
19 Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do ye enquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me?
20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.
21 A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.
22 And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.
23 And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.
24 Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.
25 These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father.
26 At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you:
27 For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.
28 I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.
29 His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb.
30 Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God.
31 Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe?
32 Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
