16 Jag har sagt er detta för att ni inte ska tveka inför allt som ligger framför er.
2 Ni kommer att bli utestängda från synagogorna, ja, det ska gå så långt att de som dödar er ska tycka att de tjänar Gud.
3 Och att de gör det beror på att de aldrig har känt Fadern eller mig.
4 Ja, jag säger er detta nu så att ni inte blir överraskade när det händer. Jag har inte sagt det till er tidigare eftersom jag hela tiden har varit hos er.
Jesus undervisar om den helige Ande
5 Men nu ska jag gå bort till den som sände mig, och ingen av er frågar varför jag går bort.
6 Ni är bedrövade och sörjer över vad jag sagt er.
7 Men det är faktiskt bäst för er att jag går bort, annars kan inte den komma i mitt ställe som ska hjälpa och trösta er. Om jag går bort så kommer han, för jag ska sända honom till er.
8 Och när han har kommit ska han öppna människornas ögon så att de ser sin synd och förstår Guds rättfärdighet och hans domar.
9 För deras synd består i att de inte tror på mig.
10 Guds rättfärdighet visar sig däri att jag går till Fadern, och ni ser mig inte mer.
11 Och Guds dom består i att denna världens furste redan är dömd.
12 Det är så mycket jag vill säga er, men ni kan inte förstå det nu.
13 När den helige Ande - som är sanningen - kommer, ska han leda er fram till hela sanningen. Han ska inte tala i egen sak, utan endast förmedla vad han har hört. Också vad som väntar er i framtiden ska han berätta för er.
14 Han ska upphöja mig och ära mig genom att visa er min härlighet.
15 Allt vad Fadern har tillhör mig. Därför kan jag med rätta säga: Allt vad han visar er kommer från mig.
16 Snart är jag borta och ni ser mig inte längre. Men det dröjer inte länge förrän ni får se mig igen.
Jesus uppmanar lärjungarna att be i hans namn
17-18 Vad talar han om? frågade lärjungarna. Han säger ju att snart är han borta och sedan att vi ska få se honom igen. Och vad menar han med 'att gå till Fadern?' Vi vet inte vad det betyder.
19 Jesus märkte att de ville fråga om något så han sa: Ni frågar er vad jag menar?
20 Världen kommer att glädja sig över vad som ska hända mig, och ni kommer att gråta. Men er gråt ska plötsligt vändas i underbar glädje när ni ser mig igen.
21 Det blir som när en kvinna föder barn. Så fort barnet är fött glömmer hon smärtan, och hon känner djup lycka över att en människa är född till världen.
22 Ni sörjer nu, men jag ska se er igen, och då kommer ni att bli glada, och ingen kan ta den glädjen från er.
23 Då behöver ni inte fråga mig om någonting. Ni kan gå direkt till Fadern, och han ska ge er vad ni ber om därför att ni använder mitt namn.
24 Ni har inte försökt det förut, men börja nu. Be i mitt namn så ska ni få, och er glädje ska bli fullkomlig.
25 Vad jag vill säga er har jag hitintills förklarat med exempel, men den tid ska komma när detta inte längre är nödvändigt, utan jag kan tala öppet till er, utan bilder och omskrivningar och låta er veta allt om Fadern.
26 Då kan ni be i mitt namn och vända er direkt till honom. Och jag behöver inte be Fadern besvara era önskemål,
27 för Fadern själv älskar er innerligt därför att ni älskar mig och tror att jag kom från Fadern.
28 Ja, jag kom från Fadern till världen och ska lämna världen för att återvända till Fadern.
29 Äntligen talar du i klartext, sa lärjungarna, och inte i gåtor.
30 Nu förstår vi att du vet allt och inte behöver ha någon som lär dig någonting. Därför tror vi att du kommer från Gud.
31 Tror ni verkligen det? svarade Jesus.
32 Men den stund kommer, ja, den är faktiskt redan här, när ni ska skingras och återvända var och en till sitt och lämna mig ensam. Men inte ens då ska jag vara ensam för Fadern är med mig.
33 Jag har sagt er allt detta för att ni ska ha frid i era hjärtan och sinnen. Här på jorden kommer ni att möta många sorger och bedrövelser, men var vid gott mod för jag har segrat över världen.

16 Detta har jag sagt er för att ni inte ska komma på fall. 2 De kommer att utesluta er ur synagogorna, ja, det ska gå så långt att de som dödar er tror sig så tjäna Gud och offra åt honom. 3 Så gör de därför att de aldrig har lärt känna min Fader och inte heller mig. 4 Jag har sagt er detta nu så att ni, när den tiden kommer, ska komma ihåg att jag sa det till er. Jag sa det inte till er från början eftersom jag var hos er.
Jesus undervisar om Anden
5 Nu går jag bort till honom som har sänt mig och ingen av er frågar vart jag går. 6 Det jag har sagt fyller era hjärtan med sorg. 7 Men jag säger er sanningen: det är bäst för er att jag går bort för om jag inte gör det, kommer inte Hjälparen till er. När jag har gått bort, ska jag sända honom till er. 8 Och när han kommer ska han visa världen vad synd, rättfärdighet och dom är; 9 synd: de tror inte på mig, 10 rättfärdighet: jag går till Fadern och ni ser mig inte längre, 11 och dom: den här världens härskare är dömd.
12 Det är så mycket jag vill säga er men ni kan inte ta emot det nu. 13 Men när han kommer, sanningens Ande, ska han vägleda er i hela sanningen. Han ska inte tala av sig själv utan bara berätta det han hör och låta er veta vad som kommer att hända i framtiden. 14 Han ska förhärliga mig för han låter er veta vad han har fått från mig. 15 Allt som min Fader har, det tillhör mig. Därför kan jag säga att han får det av mig som han låter er veta. 16 Snart ser ni mig inte längre. Men sedan ska ni snart få se mig igen.”
Sorgen ska vändas i glädje
17 Några av lärjungarna frågade då varandra: ”Vad menar han när han säger att vi snart inte ser honom längre men att vi sedan snart ska få se honom igen och när han säger att han går till sin Fader?” 18 De undrade: ”Vad menar han med ’snart’? Vi fattar inte vad han säger!”
19 Jesus visste att de ville fråga honom, så han sa till dem: ”Ni undrar vad jag menade när jag sa att ni snart inte ser mig längre men att ni snart ska få se mig igen? 20 Ja, sannerligen säger jag er: ni kommer att gråta och klaga, men världen ska glädja sig. Ni ska sörja men er sorg ska vändas i glädje. 21 När en kvinna föder barn har hon det smärtsamt då hennes stund har kommit. Men när hon har fött sitt barn, glömmer hon smärtan och gläder sig bara över att en människa har fötts till världen. 22 Ni har det också svårt just nu, men jag ska träffa er igen och då ska era hjärtan bli glada och ingen ska ta er glädje ifrån er. 23 Den dagen behöver ni inte fråga mig om någonting. Ja, sannerligen säger jag er: Fadern ska ge er vad ni än ber om i mitt namn. 24 Ni har ännu inte bett om något i mitt namn. Be nu, så ska ni få och er glädje ska bli fullkomlig!
25 Allt detta har jag talat till er i bilder, men det kommer en tid då jag kan tala till er öppet och utan bilder om min Fader. 26 Den dagen ska ni be i mitt namn och jag säger inte att jag ska be till Fadern för er, 27 för Fadern själv älskar er därför att ni har älskat mig och trott att jag kommer från Gud. 28 Jag kom från Fadern och steg in i världen och jag ska lämna världen och gå till Fadern.”
29 Då sa hans lärjungar: ”Nu talar du i klartext och inte i bilder. 30 Nu förstår vi att du vet allt och inte behöver någon som frågar dig. Därför tror vi att du kommer från Gud.”
31 Jesus svarade: ”Nu tror ni? 32 Se, den stund kommer, ja, den är redan här, då ni ska skingras och återvända var och en till sitt och lämna mig ensam. Men jag är inte ensam, för Fadern är med mig. 33 Detta har jag talat till er för att ni ska ha frid i mig. Här i världen kommer ni att möta bedrövelser men var vid gott mod, jag har besegrat världen.”

Jesus Warns and Comforts His Disciples
16 “These things I have spoken to you, that you (A)should not be made to stumble. 2 (B)They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming (C)that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service. 3 And (D)these things they will do [a]to you because they have not known the Father nor Me. 4 But these things I have told you, that when [b]the time comes, you may remember that I told you of them.
“And these things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you.
The Work of the Holy Spirit
5 “But now I (E)go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ 6 But because I have said these things to you, (F)sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but (G)if I depart, I will send Him to you. 8 And when He has (H)come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 (I)of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 (J)of righteousness, (K)because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 (L)of judgment, because (M)the ruler of this world is judged.
12 “I still have many things to say to you, (N)but you cannot bear them now. 13 However, when He, (O)the Spirit of truth, has come, (P)He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 (Q)He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 (R)All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He [c]will take of Mine and declare it to you.
Sorrow Will Turn to Joy
16 “A (S)little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me, (T)because I go to the Father.”
17 Then some of His disciples said among themselves, “What is this that He says to us, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’; and, ‘because I go to the Father’?” 18 They said therefore, “What is this that He says, ‘A little while’? We do not [d]know what He is saying.”
19 Now Jesus knew that they desired to ask Him, and He said to them, “Are you inquiring among yourselves about what I said, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’? 20 Most assuredly, I say to you that you will weep and (U)lament, but the world will rejoice; and you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into (V)joy. 21 (W)A woman, when she is in labor, has sorrow because her hour has come; but as soon as she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22 Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again and (X)your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you.
23 “And in that day you will ask Me nothing. (Y)Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, (Z)that your joy may be (AA)full.
Jesus Christ Has Overcome the World
25 “These things I have spoken to you in figurative language; but the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but I will tell you (AB)plainly about the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you; 27 (AC)for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and (AD)have believed that I came forth from God. 28 (AE)I came forth from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world and go to the Father.”
29 His disciples said to Him, “See, now You are speaking plainly, and using no figure of speech! 30 Now we are sure that (AF)You know all things, and have no need that anyone should question You. By this (AG)we believe that You came forth from God.”
31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 (AH)Indeed the hour is coming, yes, has now come, that you will be scattered, (AI)each to his [e]own, and will leave Me alone. And (AJ)yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. 33 These things I have spoken to you, that (AK)in Me you may have peace. (AL)In the world you [f]will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, (AM)I have overcome the world.”

16 “All this(A) I have told you so that you will not fall away.(B) 2 They will put you out of the synagogue;(C) in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God.(D) 3 They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.(E) 4 I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember(F) that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you,(G) 5 but now I am going to him who sent me.(H) None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’(I) 6 Rather, you are filled with grief(J) because I have said these things. 7 But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate(K) will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.(L) 8 When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 about sin,(M) because people do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness,(N) because I am going to the Father,(O) where you can see me no longer; 11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world(P) now stands condemned.
12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.(Q) 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth,(R) comes, he will guide you into all the truth.(S) He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine.(T) That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”
The Disciples’ Grief Will Turn to Joy
16 Jesus went on to say, “In a little while(U) you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.”(V)
17 At this, some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,’(W) and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?”(X) 18 They kept asking, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand what he is saying.”
19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, “Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me’? 20 Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn(Y) while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.(Z) 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain(AA) because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief,(AB) but I will see you again(AC) and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.(AD) 23 In that day(AE) you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.(AF) 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive,(AG) and your joy will be complete.(AH)
25 “Though I have been speaking figuratively,(AI) a time is coming(AJ) when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name.(AK) I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me(AL) and have believed that I came from God.(AM) 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”(AN)
29 Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech.(AO) 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe(AP) that you came from God.”(AQ)
31 “Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. 32 “A time is coming(AR) and in fact has come when you will be scattered,(AS) each to your own home. You will leave me all alone.(AT) Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.(AU)
33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.(AV) In this world you will have trouble.(AW) But take heart! I have overcome(AX) the world.”
