Ang Adlaw sa Pagsilot sa Ginoo sama sa Pagdagsang sa mga Dulon
2 Patingoga ninyo ang budyong sa pagpasidaan sa mga tawo sa Zion,[a] ang balaang bungtod sa Ginoo. Tanan kamong nagapuyo sa Juda, magkurog kamo sa kahadlok, kay haduol na gyud ang adlaw ang Ginoo. 2 Ngitngit ug dulom kanang adlawa. Ug sama sa pagdan-ag sa adlaw kon magbanagbanag na, magkatag sa mga bukid ang makadaot nga mga dulon nga labihan kadaghan. Wala gayoy nahitabo nga sama niini sukad pa kaniadto, ug dili na mahitabo pa ang sama niini sa umaabot nga panahon.
3 Nagpuli-puli sa pag-ataki ang mga dulon nga daw kalayo.[b] Sa wala pa sila moataki ang yuta daw hardin sa Eden, apan sa dihang miataki na sila nahisama na kini sa disyerto. Wala gayoy tanom nga nakalingkawas kanila. 4 Morag kabayo ang ilang hitsura ug paspas sila sama sa mga kabayo nga panggira. 5 Ang kasaba sa ilang paglukso-lukso sa ibabaw sa mga bukid sama sa nagadagan nga karwahe o lagitik sa gisunog nga dagami. Sama sila sa kusgan nga mga sundalo nga andam na sa pakig-gubat. 6 Ang mga tawo nga makakita kanila mangahadlok ug mangluspad. 7-8 Moataki sila ug mokatkat sa mga paril sama sa mga sundalo. Diretso sila kon molakaw ug dili motipas sa ilang agianan. Dili sila magtinukloray, ug bisan matagbo nila ang mga armas dili sila makatag. 9 Gi-ataki nila ang siyudad ug ginasaka nila ang paril. Gi-saka nila ang mga kabalayan ug moagi sila sa mga bintana sama sa kawatan. 10 Mauyog ang kalibotan ug ang kalangitan sa ilang pag-abot. Ug mongitngit ang adlaw ug ang bulan ug wala nay mosidlak nga mga bitoon.
11 Ang Ginoo nagamando niining labihan kadaghang mga dulon, ug nagatuman sila sa iyang sugo. Makalilisang gayod ang adlaw nga magasilot ang Ginoo; wala gayoy makaagwanta niini.
Gipabalik sa Ginoo diha Kaniya ang Iyang mga Katawhan
12 Miingon ang Ginoo nga panahon na nga mobalik kamo kaniya sa kinasingkasing inubanan sa pagpuasa, paghilak, ug pagsubo. 13 Paghinulsol kamo nga kinasingkasing ug dili pagpakaaron-ingnon nga paghinulsol pinaagi sa paggisi sa inyong mga bisti. Balik na kamo sa Ginoo nga inyong Dios, kay maloloy-on siya ug mabalak-on. Mahigugmaon siya ug dili daling masuko. Andam siyang magbag-o sa iyang hunahuna nga dili na magpadala ug kalaglagan. 14 Basin pa lang mausab ang hunahuna sa Ginoo nga inyong Dios, ug panalanginan niya ang inyong mga abot, aron makahalad na kamo kaniya ug mga trigo ug bino.
15 Patingoga ninyo ang budyong sa Zion aron sa pagpahibalo sa mga tawo nga magtigom sila ug magpuasa. 16 Pagtigom kamong tanan, bata man o tigulang, ug himoa ninyo ang seremonya sa paghinlo. Apil ang mga masuso dad-on usab, ug bisan ang bag-ong kinasal moapil sa tigom. 17 Ang mga pari nga nagaalagad sa Ginoo pahilaka taliwala sa halaran ug sa balkonahe sa templo. Paampoa sila ug sama niini: “Ginoo, kaloy-i ang imong katawhan nga imong gipanag-iya. Ayaw tugoti nga pakaulawan sila ug tamayon[c] sa ubang mga nasod pinaagi sa pag-ingon, ‘Asa na ba ang inyong Dios?’ ”
Panalanginan Pag-usab sa Ginoo ang Yuta sa Juda
18 Nabalaka gayod ang Ginoo sa iyang yuta, ug nalooy siya sa iyang katawhan. 19 Ug isip tubag sa ilang pag-ampo magaingon siya kanila, “Hatagan ko kamo ug mga trigo, bag-ong bino, ug lana; ug matagbaw gayod kamo. Dili ko na tugotan nga biay-biayon pa kamo sa ubang mga nasod. 20 Ipalayo ko ang mga mosulong kaninyo nga gikan sa amihan, ug dad-on ko sila ngadto sa disyerto. Ang nauna nilang panon abugon ko ngadto sa Patay nga Dagat[d] ug ang ulahi nila nga panon abugon ko ngadto sa Dagat sa Mediteraneo.[e] Didto manimaho ang ilang mga patayng lawas.”
Tinuod nga katingalahan ang mga gihimo sa Ginoo. 21 Dili angayng mahadlok ang yuta sa Juda, kondili magsadya hinuon kini kay katingalahan ang mga gihimo sa Ginoo. 22 Dili usab angayng mahadlok ang mga mananap, kay lunhaw na ang mga sabsabanan ug nagapamunga na ang mga kahoy apil ang igos. Nagapamunga na usab ang mga ubas.
23 Kamong mga katawhan sa Zion, paglipay kamo sa gihimo kaninyo sa Ginoo nga inyong Dios. Kay gihatagan niya kamo sa nahaunang ulan sa pagpakita nga matarong siya. Gipadad-an niya kamo sa nahaunang ulan ug sunod pang ulan sama kaniadto. 24 Mapuno sa mga trigo ang mga giokanan ug mag-awas ang duga sa ubas ug lana sa mga pug-anan niini. 25 Kay nagaingon ang Ginoo, “Ibalik ko ang mga nawala kaninyo sa mga katuigan nga giataki ang inyong mga tanom sa sunod-sunod nga mga panon sa mga dulon. Ako ang nagpadala kaninyo niining daghang mga dulon nga akong mga sundalo. 26 Karon modaghan na ang inyong mga kalan-on ug mabusog kamo pag-ayo. Ug tungod niini, pagadaygon ninyo ako nga inyong Dios, nga naghimo ug katingalahang mga butang kaninyo. Ug kamo nga akong katawhan dili na gayod maulawan hangtod sa kahangtoran. 27 Unya mahibaloan ninyo nga anaa ako kaninyong mga taga-Israel, ug ako lang, ang Ginoo, ang inyong Dios ug wala nay lain pa. Ug kamo nga akong katawhan dili na gayod maulawan hangtod sa kahangtoran.”

28 “Sa kaulahian ihatag ko ang akong Espiritu sa tanan nga matang sa mga tawo. Ang inyong mga anak nga lalaki ug babaye magasugilon sa akong mga mensahe. Ang inyong batan-ong mga lalaki makakita ug mga panan-awon. 29 Nianang mga adlawa ihatag ko ang akong Espiritu bisan sa mga sulugoon[f] nga lalaki ug babaye. 30 Magpakita ako ug mga milagro sa langit ug sa yuta: May makitang dugo, kalayo, ug bagang aso. 31 Mongitngit ang adlaw sa paghukom ug mopula ang bulan nga daw sa dugo. Kini mahitabo sa dili pa moabot ang makalilisang gayod nga adlaw sa paghukom sa Ginoo.”
32 Apan si bisan kinsa nga modangop sa Ginoo maluwas sa silot nga magaabot. Kay sumala sa giingon sa Ginoo, may mahibilin nga mga Israelinhon sa Jerusalem[g] nga maluwas. Kini sila gipili sa Ginoo.

Chapter 2
The Day of the Lord Is Coming[a]
1 Blow the trumpet in Zion;
sound the alarm on my holy mountain.
Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble,
for the day of the Lord is coming.
2 A day of darkness and gloom is near,
a day of clouds and blackness.
Like the dawn spreading over the mountains,
a vast and powerful army approaches.
Their like has never been seen,
nor will it ever be seen again
in the ages to come.
3 Their vanguard is a devouring fire,
while behind them is a consuming flame.
Ahead of them the land is like the Garden of Eden,
but behind them lies a desert waste,
and from that army there is no escape.
4 They have the appearance of horses;
like cavalry they charge.
5 They leap over the mountaintops
with a deafening din like that of chariots,
like the crackling of a blazing fire
devouring stubble,
like a mighty army
drawn up for battle.
6 At the sight of them
people shrink back in anguish,
their faces without color.
7 Like warriors they press forward;
like soldiers they scale the walls.
They advance, marching straight ahead,
without swerving from their paths.
8 They do not jostle one another;
each marches straight ahead.
They surge through defenses
without breaking ranks.
9 They burst ahead to assault the city,
leaping onto the walls.
They climb into the houses,
entering like thieves through the windows.
10 As they move forward,
the earth quakes before them
and the heavens tremble.
The sun and the moon are darkened,
and the stars withhold their light.
11 The Lord’s voice thunders
at the head of his army.
Mighty and numerous are his forces,
and they enforce his orders.
Great is the day of the Lord
and exceedingly terrible;
who can endure it?
Rend Your Hearts and Not Your Garments[b]
12 Yet even now, says the Lord,
return to me with all your heart,
with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.
13 Rend your hearts and not your garments,
and turn back to the Lord, your God.
For he is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger, rich in kindness,
and always prepared to relent from punishing.
14 Perhaps he will turn back and relent,
and leave a blessing behind him,
cereal offerings and libations
to be presented to the Lord, your God.
15 Blow the trumpet in Zion!
Proclaim a fast!
Announce a solemn assembly!
16 Gather the people together;
summon the community;
assemble the elders;
gather the children,
even infants at the breast.
Call forth the bridegroom from his bedroom
and the bride from her wedding chamber.
17 Let the priests, the ministers of the Lord,
stand weeping, between the temple porch and the altar,
as they say, “Spare your people, O Lord,
and do not allow your heritage[c] to be mocked
and subjected to the contempt of the nations.
Why should the peoples say
‘Where is their God?’ ”
18 Thereupon, the Lord was stirred to feel concern for his land, and he took pity on his people. 19 In response to their request, the Lord said to his people:
I will send you
grain and wine and oil,
and you will have all you need.
Never again will I expose you
to the contempt of the nations.
20 I shall drive the northern army far from you
and banish them to an arid and desolate land,
with their vanguard toward the eastern sea,[e]
and their rearguard toward the western sea.
They will give off a stench,
and a foul stench will rise up.
21 Fear not, O land;
be glad and rejoice,
for the Lord has done great things.
22 Be not afraid, you beasts of the field,
for the open pastures are green once again.
The trees will bear fruit;
the fig tree and the vine will yield a full harvest.
23 O children of Zion, be glad,
and rejoice in the Lord, your God.
For he has given you food in good measure
by sending you rain,
the autumn and spring rains as before.
24 The threshing floors will be full of grain,
and the vats will overflow with wine and oil.
25 I will repay you for the years
that the swarming locust has eaten,
the hopping, the destroying, and the cutting locust,
my great army which I sent against you.
26 You will eat until you are satisfied,
and you will praise the name of the Lord, your God,
for he has dealt wondrously with you,
and my people will never again be put to shame.
27 And you shall know
that I am in the midst of Israel.
I am the Lord, your God, and there is no other;
my people shall never again be put to shame.

- Joel 2:1 The day of the Lord refers to the judgment. The text is from those who express fear before the greatness of the God who comes. The cloud of insects that is advancing like an invading army in battle array destroys everything in its path, and nothing can stop it. It announces the judgment of God.
- Joel 2:12 The moment has come to cry out to God; however, the collective liturgy must not be an external rite but rather must signify a collective movement of conversion. The Lord regards the inner part of humans rather than their outward appearances.
- Joel 2:17 Your heritage: can refer to the people of Israel or to the land of Palestine.
- Joel 2:17 In events that take place, the people of the Old Testament recognize the wrath of God; but it is not the last word.
- Joel 2:20 It was from the north that invading armies usually entered Palestine. The eastern sea and the western sea are, respectively, the Dead Sea and the Mediterranean.

2 Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the Lord cometh, for it is nigh at hand;
2 A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains: a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations.
3 A fire devoureth before them; and behind them a flame burneth: the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; yea, and nothing shall escape them.
4 The appearance of them is as the appearance of horses; and as horsemen, so shall they run.
5 Like the noise of chariots on the tops of mountains shall they leap, like the noise of a flame of fire that devoureth the stubble, as a strong people set in battle array.
6 Before their face the people shall be much pained: all faces shall gather blackness.
7 They shall run like mighty men; they shall climb the wall like men of war; and they shall march every one on his ways, and they shall not break their ranks:

A Call to Repentance
12 “Now, therefore,” says the Lord,
(U)“Turn to Me with all your heart,
With fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.”
13 So (V)rend your heart, and not (W)your garments;
Return to the Lord your God,
For He is (X)gracious and merciful,
Slow to anger, and of great kindness;
And He relents from doing harm.
14 (Y)Who knows if He will turn and relent,
And leave (Z)a blessing behind Him—
(AA)A grain offering and a drink offering
For the Lord your God?
15 (AB)Blow the [f]trumpet in Zion,
(AC)Consecrate a fast,
Call a sacred assembly;
16 Gather the people,
(AD)Sanctify the congregation,
Assemble the elders,
Gather the children and nursing babes;
(AE)Let the bridegroom go out from his chamber,
And the bride from her dressing room.
17 Let the priests, who minister to the Lord,
Weep (AF)between the porch and the altar;
Let them say, (AG)“Spare Your people, O Lord,
And do not give Your heritage to reproach,
That the nations should [g]rule over them.
(AH)Why should they say among the peoples,
‘Where is their God?’ ”

And the tree bears its fruit;
The fig tree and the vine yield their strength.
23 Be glad then, you children of Zion,

For He has given you the [j]former rain faithfully,
And He (AQ)will cause the rain to come down for you—
The former rain,
And the latter rain in the first month.

The crawling locust,
The consuming locust,
And the chewing locust,
My great army which I sent among you.

27 Then you shall know that I am (AU)in the midst of Israel:

God’s Spirit Poured Out
28 “And(AW) it shall come to pass afterward
That (AX)I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;
(AY)Your sons and your (AZ)daughters shall prophesy,
Your old men shall dream dreams,
Your young men shall see visions.
29 And also on My (BA)menservants and on My maidservants
I will pour out My Spirit in those days.
30 “And (BB)I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth:
Blood and fire and pillars of smoke.
31 (BC)The sun shall be turned into darkness,
And the moon into blood,
(BD)Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord.
32 And it shall come to pass
That (BE)whoever calls on the name of the Lord
Shall be [l]saved.
For (BF)in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be [m]deliverance,
As the Lord has said,
Among (BG)the remnant whom the Lord calls.
