Joel 2
EasyEnglish Bible
The army of locusts
2 Blow the trumpet in Zion.
Tell the people on the Lord's hill that they must watch for trouble.
All the people who live in this country will be afraid.
They will be afraid because the day of the Lord is coming.
It is very near.
2 That day will be sad and dark.
There will be dark clouds.
A great big army is coming.
It comes across the sky like light in the morning.
A great army like this has never come before.
And it will never come again in future years.
3 Fire goes in front of the army.[a]
It burns everything behind them.
The land in front of them is like the Garden of Eden.[b]
Behind them it is like a desert.
They leave nothing behind them.
4 They look like horses.
And they run fast to the war.
5 Their noise is like the noise of many feet.
They jump over the mountains
as fast as fire burns dry grass.
They are like a great army ready for a fight.
6 Nations that see them are very afraid.
Every face changes colour.
7 They run together like an army into a fight.
They climb walls like soldiers.
They march on in a straight line.
They do not turn away.
8 They do not push each other away.
Each one of them goes straight on.
You can put weapons in their path
but they go straight on.
9 They run towards the city.
They run along the wall.
They climb into houses.
They go through the windows like robbers.
10 The earth in front of them moves.
The sky itself moves.
The sun and moon are dark
and the stars do not give any light.
11 The Lord shouts aloud
as he leads his army.
We cannot count his soldiers.
Those who obey him are very strong.
The day of the Lord is powerful.
It makes us afraid.
Not many of us will be alive after it has gone.[c]
Show the Lord that you are sorry
12 ‘Even now,’ the Lord says,
‘return to me and put me first.
Eat no food. Cry and be very sad.
13 Stop pulling your clothes to pieces. That does not help.
Show me instead that you are really sorry.’
Return to the Lord, your God.
He is kind and full of grace.
He does not quickly become angry, and he is full of love.
He is sad that he had to cause troubles for you.
14 Perhaps he will change his mind and he will be sorry.
He may send you blessings of food and drink.
Then you can offer gifts to the Lord your God.
15 Blow the trumpet in Zion.
Tell the people that they must not eat any food.
Tell the people that they must all come to worship him.
16 Tell the people that they must all come.
Make them all ready to serve the Lord.
Bring the old people together.
Bring the children – even the smallest ones.
Every new husband must leave his room.
Every wife must leave her secret room.
17 There are priests who go in front of the Lord.
They must cry as they go from the temple door to the altar.
They must say to the Lord, ‘Do not hurt your people.
Do not let the people in other countries laugh at your own people.
They will point at them. And they will say that they have no value.
They will say that we have no God.’
The Lord's answer
18 Then the Lord will be careful for his land.
He will be kind to his people.
19 He will answer them and he will say,
‘I am giving you new wine and food and oil.
You will have enough to fill you up.
I will never again let people in other countries laugh about you.
20 I will send the army from the north far from you.
I will push it into empty land where nothing grows.
I will make the front of it go into the sea on the east.
And I will make the back of it go into the sea on the west.
I will make its smell rise up high
because it has done great things.’
21 Do not be afraid, my own land!
Be very happy.
Be sure that the Lord has done great things.
22 Do not be afraid, wild animals.
The fields in the wilderness are becoming green.
Fruit is growing on the trees.
The fig tree and the vine are giving much fruit.
23 Shout with joy, people in Zion!
Be very happy because of the things that the Lord your God has done.
He has given you just enough autumn rain.
He has given you the winter rain,
and the summer rain, as before.
24 He will fill your stores with seeds to make bread.
And he will fill your jars with new wine and oil.
25 ‘I will give you back the years that the locusts have eaten.
I will give you all that the great locust and the young locust,
and other locusts and their groups have eaten.
All that my great army has eaten I will give you.[d]
26 You will have plenty to eat. You will be full.
You will praise the name of the Lord your God.
He has done great things for you.
My people will never again be ashamed.
27 Then you will know that I am in Israel.
You will know that I am the Lord your God.
And you will know that there is no other God.
My people will never again be ashamed.’
The day of the Lord
28 After that, I will pour out my Holy Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will be prophets.
Your old men will dream and
your young men will see pictures in their minds. (The Lord will send these to them.)
29 I will pour out my Spirit on all my servants,
on men and on women in those days.[e]
30 I will do strange things in the sky and on the earth.
I will send blood and fire and clouds of smoke.
31 The sun will become dark and the moon will become red.
Then the great and frightening day of the Lord will come.
32 Everyone who asks the Lord for help will be safe.
They will be safe if they believe in his name.
The Lord will save the people on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem.[f]
He has promised this to those people whom he has asked to come to him.

Joel 2
King James Version
2 Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the Lord cometh, for it is nigh at hand;
2 A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains: a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations.
3 A fire devoureth before them; and behind them a flame burneth: the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; yea, and nothing shall escape them.
4 The appearance of them is as the appearance of horses; and as horsemen, so shall they run.
5 Like the noise of chariots on the tops of mountains shall they leap, like the noise of a flame of fire that devoureth the stubble, as a strong people set in battle array.
6 Before their face the people shall be much pained: all faces shall gather blackness.
7 They shall run like mighty men; they shall climb the wall like men of war; and they shall march every one on his ways, and they shall not break their ranks:
8 Neither shall one thrust another; they shall walk every one in his path: and when they fall upon the sword, they shall not be wounded.
9 They shall run to and fro in the city; they shall run upon the wall, they shall climb up upon the houses; they shall enter in at the windows like a thief.
10 The earth shall quake before them; the heavens shall tremble: the sun and the moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining:
11 And the Lord shall utter his voice before his army: for his camp is very great: for he is strong that executeth his word: for the day of the Lord is great and very terrible; and who can abide it?
12 Therefore also now, saith the Lord, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning:
13 And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the Lord your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.
14 Who knoweth if he will return and repent, and leave a blessing behind him; even a meat offering and a drink offering unto the Lord your God?
15 Blow the trumpet in Zion, sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly:
16 Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the elders, gather the children, and those that suck the breasts: let the bridegroom go forth of his chamber, and the bride out of her closet.
17 Let the priests, the ministers of the Lord, weep between the porch and the altar, and let them say, Spare thy people, O Lord, and give not thine heritage to reproach, that the heathen should rule over them: wherefore should they say among the people, Where is their God?
18 Then will the Lord be jealous for his land, and pity his people.
19 Yea, the Lord will answer and say unto his people, Behold, I will send you corn, and wine, and oil, and ye shall be satisfied therewith: and I will no more make you a reproach among the heathen:
20 But I will remove far off from you the northern army, and will drive him into a land barren and desolate, with his face toward the east sea, and his hinder part toward the utmost sea, and his stink shall come up, and his ill savour shall come up, because he hath done great things.
21 Fear not, O land; be glad and rejoice: for the Lord will do great things.
22 Be not afraid, ye beasts of the field: for the pastures of the wilderness do spring, for the tree beareth her fruit, the fig tree and the vine do yield their strength.
23 Be glad then, ye children of Zion, and rejoice in the Lord your God: for he hath given you the former rain moderately, and he will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain in the first month.
24 And the floors shall be full of wheat, and the vats shall overflow with wine and oil.
25 And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you.
26 And ye shall eat in plenty, and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God, that hath dealt wondrously with you: and my people shall never be ashamed.
27 And ye shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am the Lord your God, and none else: and my people shall never be ashamed.
28 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:
29 And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.
30 And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.
31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord come.
32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the Lord hath said, and in the remnant whom the Lord shall call.

2 (A)Blow a trumpet in Zion,
And make a loud shout on My holy mountain!
Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble,
For the (B)day of Yahweh is coming;
Surely it is near,
2 A day of (C)darkness and thick darkness,
A day of clouds and dense gloom.
As the dawn is spread over the mountains,
So there is a (D)numerous and mighty people;
There has (E)never been anything like it,
Nor will there be again after it
For the years from generation to generation.
3 A (F)fire consumes before them,
And behind them a flame burns.
The land is (G)like the garden of Eden before them
But a (H)desolate wilderness behind them,
And nothing at all escapes them.
4 Their (I)appearance is like the appearance of horses;
And like war horses, so they run.
5 [a]With a (J)noise as of chariots
They leap on the tops of the mountains,
Like the [b]crackling of a (K)flame of fire consumes the stubble,
Like a mighty people arranged for battle.
6 Before them the peoples are (L)writhing;
All (M)faces [c]turn pale.
7 They run like mighty men;
They climb up the wall like men of war;
And they each (N)march [d]in line,
And they do not deviate from their paths.
8 They do not crowd each other;
They march everyone in his path;
When they fall against the defending weapons,
They do not break ranks.
9 They rush on the city;
They run on the wall;
They climb up into the (O)houses;
They (P)enter through the windows like a thief.
10 Before them the earth (Q)trembles;
The heavens quake;
The (R)sun and the moon grow dark,
And the stars [e]lose their brightness.
11 But Yahweh (S)gives forth His voice before (T)His military force;
Surely His camp is very numerous,
For (U)mighty is he who does His word.
The (V)day of Yahweh is indeed great and very awesome,
And (W)who can endure it?
Return to Yahweh
12 “Yet even now,” declares Yahweh,
“(X)Return to Me with all your heart
And with (Y)fasting, weeping, and [f]wailing;
13 And (Z)tear your heart and not (AA)your garments.”
Now return to Yahweh your God,
For He is (AB)gracious and compassionate,
Slow to anger, abounding in lovingkindness,
And (AC)relenting concerning evil.
14 Who knows (AD)whether He will not turn and relent
And leave a (AE)blessing behind Him,
Even (AF)a grain offering and a drink offering
For Yahweh your God?
15 (AG)Blow a trumpet in Zion,
(AH)Set apart a fast as holy, call for a solemn assembly,
16 Gather the people, (AI)set apart the congregation as holy,
Assemble the elders,
Gather the infants and the nursing babies.
Let the (AJ)bridegroom come out of his room
And the bride out of her bridal chamber.
17 Let the priests, the ministers of Yahweh,
Weep (AK)between the porch and the altar,
And let them say, “(AL)Pity Your people, O Yahweh,
And do not make Your inheritance a (AM)reproach,
A byword among the nations.
Why should they among the peoples say,
‘(AN)Where is their God?’”
Yahweh Will Spare His People
18 Then Yahweh [g]will be (AO)zealous for His land
And [h]will (AP)spare His people.
19 Then Yahweh [i]will answer and say to His people,
“Behold, I am going to (AQ)send you grain, new wine, and oil,
And you will be satisfied in full with [j]them;
And I will (AR)never again make you a reproach among the nations.
20 But I will remove the (AS)northern military force far from you,
And I will drive it into a parched and desolate land,
And its vanguard into the (AT)eastern sea,
And its rear guard into the (AU)western sea.
And its (AV)stench will rise up, and its foul smell will rise up,
For it has done great things.”
21 (AW)Do not fear, O land, rejoice and be glad,
For Yahweh has done (AX)great things.
22 Do not fear, beasts of the field,
For the (AY)pastures of the wilderness have turned green,
For the tree has borne its fruit;
The fig tree and the vine have yielded [k]their full force.
23 So rejoice, O (AZ)sons of Zion,
And (BA)be glad in Yahweh your God,
For He has (BB)given you [l]the early rain in righteousness.
And He has poured down for you the rain,
The [m]early and [n](BC)late rains [o]as before.
24 The threshing floors will be full of grain,
And the vats will (BD)overflow with the new wine and oil.
25 “Then I will pay back to you in full for the years
That the swarming (BE)locust has consumed,
The creeping locust, the stripping locust, and the gnawing locust,
My great military force which I sent among you.
26 And you will have plenty to (BF)consume and be satisfied
And (BG)praise the name of Yahweh your God,
Who has (BH)dealt wondrously with you;
Then My people will (BI)never be put to shame.
27 Thus you will (BJ)know that I am in the midst of Israel,
And that I am Yahweh your God,
And there is (BK)no other;
And My people will never be (BL)put to shame.
Yahweh Will Pour Out His Spirit
28 “[p](BM)And it will be afterwards
That I will (BN)pour out My Spirit on all [q](BO)mankind;
And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy;
Your old men will dream dreams;
Your young men will see visions.
29 Even on the (BP)male slaves and female slaves
I will in those days pour out My Spirit.
Deliverance in the Day of Yahweh
30 And I will (BQ)put wonders in the sky and on the earth,
Blood, fire, and columns of smoke.
31 The (BR)sun will be turned into darkness
And the moon into blood
Before the (BS)great and awesome day of Yahweh comes.
32 And it will be that (BT)everyone who calls on the name of Yahweh
Will [r]be delivered;
For (BU)on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem
There will be those who (BV)escape,
As Yahweh has said,
Even among the (BW)survivors whom Yahweh calls.
