The Lord’s Answer

18 Then the Lord was jealous(A) for his land
    and took pity(B) on his people.

19 The Lord replied[a] to them:

“I am sending you grain, new wine(C) and olive oil,(D)
    enough to satisfy you fully;(E)
never again will I make you
    an object of scorn(F) to the nations.

20 “I will drive the northern horde(G) far from you,
    pushing it into a parched and barren land;
its eastern ranks will drown in the Dead Sea
    and its western ranks in the Mediterranean Sea.
And its stench(H) will go up;
    its smell will rise.”

Surely he has done great things!
21     Do not be afraid,(I) land of Judah;
    be glad and rejoice.(J)
Surely the Lord has done great things!(K)
22     Do not be afraid, you wild animals,
    for the pastures in the wilderness are becoming green.(L)
The trees are bearing their fruit;
    the fig tree(M) and the vine(N) yield their riches.(O)
23 Be glad, people of Zion,
    rejoice(P) in the Lord your God,
for he has given you the autumn rains
    because he is faithful.(Q)
He sends you abundant showers,(R)
    both autumn(S) and spring rains,(T) as before.
24 The threshing floors will be filled with grain;
    the vats will overflow(U) with new wine(V) and oil.

25 “I will repay you for the years the locusts(W) have eaten(X)
    the great locust and the young locust,
    the other locusts and the locust swarm[b]
my great army(Y) that I sent among you.
26 You will have plenty to eat, until you are full,(Z)
    and you will praise(AA) the name of the Lord your God,
    who has worked wonders(AB) for you;
never again will my people be shamed.(AC)
27 Then you will know(AD) that I am in Israel,
    that I am the Lord(AE) your God,
    and that there is no other;
never again will my people be shamed.(AF)

The Day of the Lord

28 “And afterward,
    I will pour out my Spirit(AG) on all people.(AH)
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,(AI)
    your old men will dream dreams,(AJ)
    your young men will see visions.
29 Even on my servants,(AK) both men and women,
    I will pour out my Spirit in those days.(AL)
30 I will show wonders in the heavens(AM)
    and on the earth,(AN)
    blood and fire and billows of smoke.
31 The sun will be turned to darkness(AO)
    and the moon to blood
    before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.(AP)
32 And everyone who calls
    on the name of the Lord(AQ) will be saved;(AR)
for on Mount Zion(AS) and in Jerusalem
    there will be deliverance,(AT)
    as the Lord has said,
even among the survivors(AU)
    whom the Lord calls.[c](AV)

The Nations Judged

[d]“In those days and at that time,
    when I restore the fortunes(AW) of Judah(AX) and Jerusalem,
I will gather(AY) all nations
    and bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat.[e](AZ)
There I will put them on trial(BA)
    for what they did to my inheritance, my people Israel,
because they scattered(BB) my people among the nations
    and divided up my land.
They cast lots(BC) for my people
    and traded boys for prostitutes;
    they sold girls for wine(BD) to drink.

“Now what have you against me, Tyre and Sidon(BE) and all you regions of Philistia?(BF) Are you repaying me for something I have done? If you are paying me back, I will swiftly and speedily return on your own heads what you have done.(BG) For you took my silver and my gold and carried off my finest treasures to your temples.[f](BH) You sold the people of Judah and Jerusalem to the Greeks,(BI) that you might send them far from their homeland.

“See, I am going to rouse them out of the places to which you sold them,(BJ) and I will return(BK) on your own heads what you have done. I will sell your sons(BL) and daughters to the people of Judah,(BM) and they will sell them to the Sabeans,(BN) a nation far away.” The Lord has spoken.(BO)

Proclaim this among the nations:
    Prepare for war!(BP)
Rouse the warriors!(BQ)
    Let all the fighting men draw near and attack.
10 Beat your plowshares into swords
    and your pruning hooks(BR) into spears.(BS)
Let the weakling(BT) say,
    “I am strong!”(BU)
11 Come quickly, all you nations from every side,
    and assemble(BV) there.

Bring down your warriors,(BW) Lord!

12 “Let the nations be roused;
    let them advance into the Valley of Jehoshaphat,(BX)
for there I will sit
    to judge(BY) all the nations on every side.
13 Swing the sickle,(BZ)
    for the harvest(CA) is ripe.
Come, trample the grapes,(CB)
    for the winepress(CC) is full
    and the vats overflow—
so great is their wickedness!”

14 Multitudes,(CD) multitudes
    in the valley(CE) of decision!
For the day of the Lord(CF) is near
    in the valley of decision.(CG)
15 The sun and moon will be darkened,
    and the stars no longer shine.(CH)
16 The Lord will roar(CI) from Zion
    and thunder from Jerusalem;(CJ)
    the earth and the heavens will tremble.(CK)
But the Lord will be a refuge(CL) for his people,
    a stronghold(CM) for the people of Israel.

Blessings for God’s People

17 “Then you will know(CN) that I, the Lord your God,(CO)
    dwell in Zion,(CP) my holy hill.(CQ)
Jerusalem will be holy;(CR)
    never again will foreigners invade her.(CS)

18 “In that day the mountains will drip new wine,(CT)
    and the hills will flow with milk;(CU)
    all the ravines of Judah will run with water.(CV)
A fountain will flow out of the Lord’s house(CW)
    and will water the valley of acacias.[g](CX)
19 But Egypt(CY) will be desolate,
    Edom(CZ) a desert waste,
because of violence(DA) done to the people of Judah,
    in whose land they shed innocent blood.
20 Judah will be inhabited forever(DB)
    and Jerusalem through all generations.
21 Shall I leave their innocent blood unavenged?(DC)
    No, I will not.(DD)

The Lord dwells in Zion!(DE)

  7. Joel 3:18 Or Valley of Shittim

18 Then will the Lord be jealous for his land, and pity his people.

19 Yea, the Lord will answer and say unto his people, Behold, I will send you corn, and wine, and oil, and ye shall be satisfied therewith: and I will no more make you a reproach among the heathen:

20 But I will remove far off from you the northern army, and will drive him into a land barren and desolate, with his face toward the east sea, and his hinder part toward the utmost sea, and his stink shall come up, and his ill savour shall come up, because he hath done great things.

21 Fear not, O land; be glad and rejoice: for the Lord will do great things.

22 Be not afraid, ye beasts of the field: for the pastures of the wilderness do spring, for the tree beareth her fruit, the fig tree and the vine do yield their strength.

23 Be glad then, ye children of Zion, and rejoice in the Lord your God: for he hath given you the former rain moderately, and he will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain in the first month.

24 And the floors shall be full of wheat, and the vats shall overflow with wine and oil.

25 And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you.

26 And ye shall eat in plenty, and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God, that hath dealt wondrously with you: and my people shall never be ashamed.

27 And ye shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am the Lord your God, and none else: and my people shall never be ashamed.

28 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:

29 And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.

30 And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.

31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord come.

32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the Lord hath said, and in the remnant whom the Lord shall call.

For, behold, in those days, and in that time, when I shall bring again the captivity of Judah and Jerusalem,

I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for my people and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted my land.

And they have cast lots for my people; and have given a boy for an harlot, and sold a girl for wine, that they might drink.

Yea, and what have ye to do with me, O Tyre, and Zidon, and all the coasts of Palestine? will ye render me a recompence? and if ye recompense me, swiftly and speedily will I return your recompence upon your own head;

Because ye have taken my silver and my gold, and have carried into your temples my goodly pleasant things:

The children also of Judah and the children of Jerusalem have ye sold unto the Grecians, that ye might remove them far from their border.

Behold, I will raise them out of the place whither ye have sold them, and will return your recompence upon your own head:

And I will sell your sons and your daughters into the hand of the children of Judah, and they shall sell them to the Sabeans, to a people far off: for the Lord hath spoken it.

Proclaim ye this among the Gentiles; Prepare war, wake up the mighty men, let all the men of war draw near; let them come up:

10 Beat your plowshares into swords and your pruninghooks into spears: let the weak say, I am strong.

11 Assemble yourselves, and come, all ye heathen, and gather yourselves together round about: thither cause thy mighty ones to come down, O Lord.

12 Let the heathen be wakened, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat: for there will I sit to judge all the heathen round about.

13 Put ye in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe: come, get you down; for the press is full, the fats overflow; for their wickedness is great.

14 Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the day of the Lord is near in the valley of decision.

15 The sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining.

16 The Lord also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the Lord will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel.

17 So shall ye know that I am the Lord your God dwelling in Zion, my holy mountain: then shall Jerusalem be holy, and there shall no strangers pass through her any more.

18 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the mountains shall drop down new wine, and the hills shall flow with milk, and all the rivers of Judah shall flow with waters, and a fountain shall come forth out of the house of the Lord, and shall water the valley of Shittim.

19 Egypt shall be a desolation, and Edom shall be a desolate wilderness, for the violence against the children of Judah, because they have shed innocent blood in their land.

20 But Judah shall dwell for ever, and Jerusalem from generation to generation.

21 For I will cleanse their blood that I have not cleansed: for the Lord dwelleth in Zion.

A Sabbath-Rest for the People of God

Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it.(A) For we also have had the good news proclaimed to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed.[a](B) Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said,

“So I declared on oath in my anger,
    ‘They shall never enter my rest.’”[b](C)

And yet his works have been finished since the creation of the world. For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: “On the seventh day God rested from all his works.”[c](D) And again in the passage above he says, “They shall never enter my rest.”(E)

Therefore since it still remains for some to enter that rest, and since those who formerly had the good news proclaimed to them did not go in because of their disobedience,(F) God again set a certain day, calling it “Today.” This he did when a long time later he spoke through David, as in the passage already quoted:

“Today, if you hear his voice,
    do not harden your hearts.”[d](G)

For if Joshua had given them rest,(H) God would not have spoken(I) later about another day. There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; 10 for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works,[e](J) just as God did from his.(K) 11 Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.(L)

12 For the word of God(M) is alive(N) and active.(O) Sharper than any double-edged sword,(P) it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.(Q) 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight.(R) Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

  2. Hebrews 4:3 Psalm 95:11; also in verse 5
  3. Hebrews 4:4 Gen. 2:2
  4. Hebrews 4:7 Psalm 95:7,8
  5. Hebrews 4:10 Or labor

Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.

For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.

For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.

And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest.

Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief:

Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day.

There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.

10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.

11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.
