Job Says There Is No Arbitrator between God and Mankind

9 Then Job responded,

²“In truth I know that this is so;
But how can a ^(A)person be in the right with God?
³If one wished to ^(B)dispute with Him,
He could not answer Him once in a thousand times.
⁴^(C)Wise in heart and ^(D)mighty in strength,
Who has ^[a]^(E)defied Him ^[b]without harm?
⁵^(F)It is God who removes the mountains, and they do not know how,
When He overturns them in His anger.
⁶It is He who ^(G)shakes the earth from its place,
And its ^(H)pillars tremble;
⁷Who commands the ^(I)sun ^[c]not to shine,
And puts a seal on the stars;
⁸Who alone ^(J)stretches out the heavens,
And ^[d]^(K)tramples down the waves of the sea;
⁹Who makes the ^(L)Bear, Orion, and the Pleiades,
And the ^[e]^(M)constellations of the south.
¹⁰It is He who ^(N)does great things, ^[f]the unfathomable,
And wondrous works without number.
¹¹If He were to pass by me, ^(O)I would not see Him;
Were He to move past me, I would not perceive Him.
¹²If He were to snatch away, who could ^(P)restrain Him?
Who could say to Him, ‘^(Q)What are You doing?’

¹³“God will not turn back His anger;
Beneath Him the helpers of ^[g]^(R)Rahab cower.
¹⁴How then can ^(S)I ^[h]answer Him,
And choose my words ^[i]before Him?
¹⁵For ^(T)though I were right, I could not ^[j]answer;
I would have to ^(U)implore the mercy of my Judge.
¹⁶If I called and He answered me,
I could not believe that He was listening to my voice.
¹⁷For He ^(V)bruises me with a storm
And multiplies my wounds without cause.
¹⁸He will ^(W)not allow me to get my breath,
But He saturates me with ^(X)bitterness.
¹⁹If it is a matter of power, ^(Y)behold, He is the strong one!
And if it is a matter of justice, who can summon ^[k]Him?
²⁰^(Z)Though I am righteous, my mouth will ^(AA)condemn me;
Though I am guiltless, He will declare me guilty.
²¹I am ^(AB)guiltless;
I do not take notice of myself;
I ^(AC)reject my life.
²²It is all one; therefore I say,
‘He ^(AD)destroys the guiltless and the wicked.’
²³If the whip kills suddenly,
He ^(AE)mocks the despair of the innocent.
²⁴The earth ^(AF)is handed over to the wicked;
He ^(AG)covers the faces of its judges.
If it is not He, then who is it?

²⁵“Now ^(AH)my days are swifter than a runner;
They flee away, ^(AI)they see no good.
²⁶They slip by like ^(AJ)reed boats,
Like an ^(AK)eagle that swoops on ^[l]its prey.
²⁷Though I say, ‘I will forget ^(AL)my complaint,
I will ^[m]put my face in order and be cheerful,’
²⁸I am ^(AM)afraid of all my pains,
I know that ^(AN)You will not acquit me.
²⁹I am ^(AO)guilty,
Why then should I struggle in vain?
³⁰If I ^(AP)washed myself with snow,
And cleansed ^(AQ)my hands with lye,
³¹Then You would plunge me into the pit,
And my own clothes would loathe me.
³²For ^(AR)He is not a man, as I am, that ^(AS)I may answer Him—
That we may go to ^[n]court together!
³³There is no ^(AT)arbitrator between us,
Who can place his hand upon us both.
³⁴Let Him ^(AU)remove His rod from me,
And let not the dread of Him terrify me.
³⁵Then I ^(AV)would speak and not fear Him;
But I am not like that in myself.

Prayer for Protection against Oppressors.

A Prayer of David.

17 Hear a ^(A)just cause, Lord, ^(B)give Your attention to my cry;
^(C)Listen to my prayer, which is not from ^(D)deceitful lips.
²Let ^(E)my ^[a]judgment come forth from Your presence;
Let Your eyes look with ^(F)integrity.
³You have ^(G)put my heart to the test;
You have visited me by night;
You have ^(H)sifted me and ^(I)You find ^[b]nothing;
My ^(J)intent is that my mouth will not offend.
⁴As for the works of mankind, ^(K)by the word of Your lips
I have kept from the ^(L)ways of the violent.
⁵My ^(M)steps have held to Your ^[c]paths.
My ^(N)feet have not slipped.

⁶I have ^(O)called upon You, for You will answer me, God;
^(P)Incline Your ear to me, hear my speech.

The New Birth

3 Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named ^(A)Nicodemus, a ^(B)ruler of the Jews; ²this man came to ^[a]Jesus at night and said to Him, “^(C)Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these ^[b]^(D)signs that You do unless ^(E)God is with him.” ³Jesus responded and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless someone ^(F)is born ^[c]again he cannot see ^(G)the kingdom of God.”

⁴Nicodemus *said to Him, “How can a person be born when he is old? He cannot enter his mother’s womb a second time and be born, can he?” ⁵Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless someone is born of ^(H)water and the Spirit, he cannot enter ^(I)the kingdom of God. ⁶^(J)That which has been born of the flesh is flesh, and that which has been born of the Spirit is spirit. ⁷Do not be amazed that I said to you, ‘You must be born ^[d]again.’ ⁸^(K)The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it is coming from and where it is going; so is everyone who has been born of the Spirit.”

⁹Nicodemus responded and said to Him, “How can these things be?” ¹⁰Jesus answered and said to him, “You are ^(L)the teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things? ¹¹Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(M)we speak of what we know and ^(N)testify of what we have seen, and ^(O)you people do not accept our testimony. ¹²If I told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? ¹³^(P)No one has ascended into heaven, except ^(Q)He who descended from heaven: ^(R)the Son of Man. ¹⁴And just as ^(S)Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must ^(T)the Son of Man ^(U)be lifted up, ¹⁵so that everyone who ^[e]believes will ^(V)have eternal life in Him.

¹⁶“For God so ^(W)loved the world, that He ^(X)gave His ^(Y)only Son, so that everyone who ^(Z)believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life. ¹⁷For God ^(AA)did not send the Son into the world ^(AB)to judge the world, but so that the world might be saved through Him. ¹⁸^(AC)The one who believes in Him is not judged; the one who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of ^(AD)the only Son of God. ¹⁹And this is the judgment, that ^(AE)the Light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the Light; for ^(AF)their deeds were evil. ²⁰^(AG)For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light, so that his deeds will not be exposed. ²¹But the one who ^(AH)practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds will be revealed ^[f]as having been performed in God.”

John the Baptist’s Last Testimony

²²After these things Jesus and His ^(AI)disciples came into the land of Judea; and there He was spending time with them and ^(AJ)baptizing. ²³Now John also was baptizing in Aenon, near Salim, because there was an abundance of water there; and people were coming and being baptized— ²⁴for ^(AK)John had not yet been thrown into prison.

²⁵Then a matter of dispute developed on the part of John’s disciples with a Jew about ^[g]^(AL)purification. ²⁶And they came to John and said to him, “^(AM)Rabbi, He who was with you ^(AN)beyond the Jordan, to whom you ^(AO)have testified—behold, He is baptizing and all the people are coming to Him.” ²⁷John replied, “^(AP)A person can receive not even one thing unless it ^(AQ)has been given to him from heaven. ²⁸You yourselves ^[h]are my witnesses that I said, ‘^(AR)I am not the ^[i]Christ,’ but, ‘I have been sent ahead of Him.’ ²⁹He who has the bride is ^(AS)the groom; but the friend of the groom, who stands and listens to him, rejoices greatly because of the groom’s voice. So this ^(AT)joy of mine has been made full. ³⁰He must ^[j]increase, but I must ^[k]decrease.

³¹“^(AU)He who comes from above is above all; ^(AV)the one who is only from the earth is of the earth and speaks of the earth. ^(AW)He who comes from heaven is above all. ³²What He has seen and heard, of this He ^(AX)testifies; and ^(AY)no one accepts His testimony. ³³The one who has accepted His testimony ^(AZ)has certified that God is true. ³⁴For He whom God ^(BA)sent speaks the words of God; ^(BB)for He does not give the Spirit ^[l]sparingly. ³⁵^(BC)The Father loves the Son and ^(BD)has entrusted all things to His hand. ³⁶The one who ^(BE)believes in the Son has eternal life; but the one who ^(BF)does not ^[m]obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.”
