Dieu rend le bonheur à qui s’adresse à lui
5 Maintenant donc, appelle, ╵pour voir si quelqu’un te répond.
A quel saint ange[a] t’adresseras-tu ?
2 Car c’est l’emportement ╵qui tue un insensé,
c’est la colère ╵qui fait périr le sot.
3 Sans doute, j’ai vu l’insensé ╵étendre ses racines,
mais j’ai soudain maudit ╵son lieu d’habitation[b] :
4 « Que ses fils soient privés ╵de tout soutien,
écrasés en justice[c], ╵sans personne pour les sauver.
5 Ce qu’il a moissonné, ╵qu’un affamé le mange
et vienne l’enlever ╵jusque dans les épines ;
oui, que des gens avides ╵engouffrent sa fortune ! »
6 Le malheur, en effet, ╵ne sort pas de la terre
et la misère ╵ne germe pas du sol,
7 car l’homme naît pour la souffrance
comme les étincelles ╵s’élèvent pour voler.
8 Pour moi, j’aurais recours à Dieu.
Oui, c’est à Dieu ╵que je présenterais ma cause.
9 Il fait de grandes choses ╵qu’on ne saurait comprendre
et des prodiges innombrables.
10 C’est lui qui fait tomber la pluie ╵sur la surface de la terre
et qui répand les eaux ╵à travers les campagnes.
11 Ceux qui sont abaissés, ╵bien haut il les élève,
ceux qui sont affligés ╵trouvent la délivrance.
12 Il déjoue les intrigues ╵des plus rusés
de sorte que leur main ╵ne peut assurer leur salut.
13 Il attrape les sages ╵au piège de leur propre ruse[d],
et les projets des plus perfides ╵il les prend de vitesse.
14 En plein jour, ils rencontrent ╵de profondes ténèbres,
à midi, ils tâtonnent ╵comme à la nuit tombée.
15 Il arrache le pauvre ╵de l’épée de leur bouche,
il sauve l’indigent ╵de la main du puissant.
16 Ainsi le miséreux ╵a de quoi espérer,
et la perversité ╵a la bouche fermée.
17 Ah ! certes, bienheureux ╵celui que Dieu corrige,
qui n’a pas de mépris ╵pour les leçons du Tout-Puissant[e].
18 Car Dieu inflige la blessure, ╵mais il la panse aussi
et même s’il meurtrit, ╵sa main guérit ensuite.
19 Six fois, dans la détresse, ╵il te délivrera.
Dans sept calamités, ╵le mal t’épargnera.
20 Au temps de la famine, ╵il te gardera de la mort
au milieu du combat, ╵il te préservera du glaive.
21 Tu seras à l’abri ╵du fouet de la langue
et tu ne craindras pas ╵le désastre à venir.
22 Tu pourras te moquer ╵de la dévastation ╵comme de la disette,
et tu n’auras pas peur ╵des animaux sauvages.
23 Un pacte te liera ╵aux pierres de la terre,
et quant aux animaux sauvages, ╵ils seront en paix avec toi.
24 Tu verras le bonheur ╵régner dans ta demeure.
Quand tu visiteras ╵tes troupeaux au bercail[f], ╵rien n’y fera défaut.
25 Tu pourras constater ╵combien ta descendance ╵sera nombreuse
et ta progéniture ╵poussera comme l’herbe.
26 Tu entreras dans le sépulcre ╵dans la mûre vieillesse[g]
comme un tas de gerbes qu’on dresse ╵à la saison voulue.
27 Oui, nous l’avons examiné : ╵cela est bien ainsi.
Ecoute donc ces choses, ╵et fais-en ton profit.

Chapter 5
1 Call now! Will anyone respond to you?
To which of the holy ones[a] will you turn?
2 Surely impatience kills the fool
and indignation slays the simpleton.
3 I have seen a fool spreading his roots,(A)
but I cursed his household suddenly:
4 May his children be far from safety;
may they be crushed at the gate[b] without a rescuer.
5 What they have reaped may the hungry eat up,
or God take away by blight,
or the thirsty swallow their substance.
6 For not from dust does mischief come,
nor from the soil does trouble sprout.
7 Human beings beget mischief
as sparks[c] fly upward.
8 In your place, I would appeal to God,
and to God I would state my plea.
9 [d]He does things great and unsearchable,
things marvelous and innumerable.
10 He gives rain upon the earth
and sends water upon the fields;
11 (B)He sets up the lowly on high,
and those who mourn are raised to safety.
12 He frustrates the plans of the cunning,
so that their hands achieve no success;
13 He catches the wise in their own ruses,(C)
and the designs of the crafty are routed.
14 They meet with darkness in the daytime,
at noonday they grope as though it were night.
15 But he saves the poor from the sword of their mouth,[e]
from the hand of the mighty.
16 Thus the needy have hope,
and iniquity closes its mouth.
17 Happy the one whom God reproves!
The Almighty’s[f] discipline do not reject.
18 For he wounds, but he binds up;(D)
he strikes, but his hands give healing.
19 Out of six troubles he will deliver you,
and at the seventh[g] no evil shall touch you.
20 In famine he will deliver you from death,
and in war from the power of the sword;
21 From the scourge of the tongue you shall be hidden,
and you shall not fear approaching ruin.
22 At ruin and want you shall laugh;
the beasts of the earth, do not fear.
23 With the stones of the field shall your covenant be,
and the wild beasts shall be at peace with you.
24 And you shall know that your tent is secure;
taking stock of your household, you shall miss nothing.
25 You shall know that your descendants are many,
and your offspring like the grass of the earth.
26 You shall approach the grave in full vigor,
as a shock of grain comes in at its season.
27 See, this we have searched out; so it is!
This we have heard, and you should know.

5 “Call now, is there anyone who will answer you?
And to which of the (A)holy ones will you turn?
2 For (B)vexation kills the ignorant fool,
And jealousy puts to death the simple.
3 I have seen the (C)ignorant fool taking root,
And I (D)cursed his abode suddenly.
4 His (E)sons are far from salvation,
They are even crushed in the gate,
And there is no deliverer.
5 [a]His harvest the hungry devour
And take it to a place of thorns,
And the [b](F)schemer pants after their wealth.
6 For (G)wickedness does not come out from the dust,
Nor does trouble sprout from the ground,
7 For (H)man is born for trouble,
As [c]sparks fly upward.
8 “But as for me, I would (I)seek God,
And I would set my cause before God,
9 Who (J)does great and unsearchable things,
[d]Wonders without number.
10 He (K)gives rain on the earth
And sends water on the fields outside,
11 So that (L)He sets on high those who are lowly,
And those who mourn are lifted to salvation.
12 He (M)frustrates the thoughts of the crafty,
So that their hands cannot attain success of sound wisdom.
13 He (N)catches the wise by their own craftiness,
And the counsel of the twisted is quickly thwarted.
14 By day they (O)meet with darkness
And grope at noon as in the night.
15 But He saves from (P)the sword of their mouth,
And (Q)the needy from the hand of the strong.
16 So the poor has hope,
And (R)unrighteousness must shut its mouth.
17 “Behold, how (S)blessed is the man whom God reproves,
So do not reject the (T)discipline of the [e]Almighty.
18 For (U)He inflicts pain and [f]gives relief;
He [g]wounds, and His hands also heal.
19 [h]From six distresses (V)He will deliver you,
Even in seven (W)evil will not touch you.
20 In (X)famine He will redeem you from death,
And (Y)in war from hands with swords.
21 You will be (Z)hidden from the scourge of the tongue,
(AA)And you will not be afraid of devastation when it comes.
22 You will (AB)laugh at devastation and starvation,
(AC)And you will not be afraid of the beasts of the earth.
23 For your covenant will be with the stones of the field,
And (AD)the beasts of the field will be at peace with you.
24 You will know that your (AE)tent is at peace,
For you will visit your abode and fear no loss.
25 You will know also that your (AF)seed will be many,
And (AG)your offspring as the vegetation of the land.
26 You will (AH)come to the grave in full vigor,
Like the stacking of grain in its season.
27 Behold this; we have investigated it, and so it is.
Hear it, and know for yourself.”
