Elifaz’ første tale til Job
4 Da svarede Elifaz:
2 „Måske bliver du vred, hvis jeg siger noget,
men jeg kan ikke holde mig tilbage længere.
3 Du har opmuntret mange i tidens løb
og været til trøst for de sørgende.
4 Du har støttet dem, der var ved at segne,
givet nyt mod til dem, der var ved at give op.
5 Nu, hvor det gælder dig selv, er du modløs,
dine egne problemer har helt slået dig ud!
6 Din ærefrygt for Gud burde give dig tillid.
De, der gør det rette, bør ikke leve i håbløshed.
7 Bliver en uskyldig overøst med ulykker?
Straffer Gud en retskaffen mand?
8 Jeg ved, at de, der sår overtrædelser og synd,
også må høste, hvad de har sået.
9 Når Gud ånder på dem, går de til grunde,
hans vredes pust gør det af med dem.
10 En løve kan brøle, så meget den vil,
ungløven vise tænder,
men Gud har al magten,
han brækker med lethed løvens tænder.
11 Da dør selv den stærkeste løve af sult,
dens unger må klare sig selv.
12 Der kom et ord til mig i det skjulte,
mit øre opfangede den svage hvisken.
13 Det kom i et syn om natten,
mens andre sov deres søde søvn.
14 Jeg blev bange og skælvede af skræk,
jeg rystede over hele kroppen,
15 et vindpust strøg hen over mit ansigt,
hårene rejste sig på mit hoved.
16 Jeg kunne ane en skikkelse foran mig,
men kunne ikke se, hvem det var.
Den standsede op,
og jeg hørte en hviskende stemme:
17 ‚Kan et menneske være fejlfrit i Guds øjne?
Kan en skabning stå skyldfri over for sin Skaber?’
18 Gud kan ikke engang stole på englene,
hans himmelske sendebud er ikke fejlfri.
19 Hvad så med mennesker, støvets børn,
som har deres hjem på jorden?
De mases så let som møl,
20 der går til grunde på et øjeblik.
Uden at man skænker dem en tanke,
knuses de og forsvinder for evigt.
21 Deres liv slutter brat, og de dør
midt i al deres uvidenhed.

4 És felele a témáni Elifáz, és monda:
2 Ha szólni próbálunk hozzád, zokon veszed-é? De hát ki bírná türtõztetni magát a beszédben?
3 Ímé sokakat oktattál, és a megfáradott kezeket megerõsítetted;
4 A tántorgót a te beszédeid fentartották, és a reszketõ térdeket megerõsítetted;
5 Most, hogy rád jött [a sor], zokon veszed; hogy téged ért [a baj,] elrettensz!
6 Nem bizodalmad-é a te istenfélelmed, s nem reménységed- é utaidnak becsületessége?
7 Emlékezzél, kérlek, ki az, a ki elveszett ártatlanul, és hol töröltettek el az igazak?
8 A mint én láttam, a kik hamisságot szántanak és gonoszságot vetnek, ugyanazt aratnak.
9 Az Istennek lehelletétõl elvesznek, az õ haragjának szelétõl elpusztulnak.
10 Az oroszlán ordítása, a sakál üvöltése, és az oroszlán-kölykök fogai megsemmisülnek.
11 Az agg oroszlán elvész, ha nincs martaléka, a nõstény oroszlán kölykei elszélednek.
12 Szó lopódzék hozzám, s valami nesz üté meg abból fülemet.
13 Éjjeli látásokon való töprengések között, mikor mély álom fogja el az embereket.
14 Félelem szálla rám, és rettegés, s megreszketteté minden csontomat.
15 Valami szellem suhant el elõttem, s testemnek szõre felborzolódék.
16 Megálla, de ábrázatját föl nem ismerém, egy alak vala szemeim elõtt, mély csend, és [ilyen] szót hallék:
17 Vajjon a halandó igaz-é Istennél: az õ teremtõje elõtt tiszta-é az ember?
18 Ímé az õ szolgáiban sem bízhatik és az õ angyalaiban is talál hibát:
19 Mennyivel inkább a sárházak lakosaiban, a kiknek fundamentumok a porban van, és könnyebben szétnyomhatók a molynál?!
20 Reggeltõl estig gyötrõdnek, s a nélkül, hogy észrevennék, elvesznek örökre.
21 Ha kiszakíttatik belõlök sátoruk kötele, nem halnak-é meg, és pedig bölcsesség nélkül?

4 Then Eliphaz the Temanite(A) replied:
2 “If someone ventures a word with you, will you be impatient?
But who can keep from speaking?(B)
3 Think how you have instructed many,(C)
how you have strengthened feeble hands.(D)
4 Your words have supported those who stumbled;(E)
you have strengthened faltering knees.(F)
5 But now trouble comes to you, and you are discouraged;(G)
it strikes(H) you, and you are dismayed.(I)
6 Should not your piety be your confidence(J)
and your blameless(K) ways your hope?
7 “Consider now: Who, being innocent, has ever perished?(L)
Where were the upright ever destroyed?(M)
8 As I have observed,(N) those who plow evil(O)
and those who sow trouble reap it.(P)
9 At the breath of God(Q) they perish;
at the blast of his anger they are no more.(R)
10 The lions may roar(S) and growl,
yet the teeth of the great lions(T) are broken.(U)
11 The lion perishes for lack of prey,(V)
and the cubs of the lioness are scattered.(W)
12 “A word(X) was secretly brought to me,
my ears caught a whisper(Y) of it.(Z)
13 Amid disquieting dreams in the night,
when deep sleep falls on people,(AA)
14 fear and trembling(AB) seized me
and made all my bones shake.(AC)
15 A spirit glided past my face,
and the hair on my body stood on end.(AD)
16 It stopped,
but I could not tell what it was.
A form stood before my eyes,
and I heard a hushed voice:(AE)
17 ‘Can a mortal be more righteous than God?(AF)
Can even a strong man be more pure than his Maker?(AG)
18 If God places no trust in his servants,(AH)
if he charges his angels with error,(AI)
19 how much more those who live in houses of clay,(AJ)
whose foundations(AK) are in the dust,(AL)
who are crushed(AM) more readily than a moth!(AN)
20 Between dawn and dusk they are broken to pieces;
unnoticed, they perish forever.(AO)
21 Are not the cords of their tent pulled up,(AP)

2 If we assay to commune with thee, wilt thou be grieved? but who can withhold himself from speaking?
3 Behold, thou hast instructed many, and thou hast strengthened the weak hands.
4 Thy words have upholden him that was falling, and thou hast strengthened the feeble knees.
5 But now it is come upon thee, and thou faintest; it toucheth thee, and thou art troubled.
6 Is not this thy fear, thy confidence, thy hope, and the uprightness of thy ways?
7 Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished, being innocent? or where were the righteous cut off?
8 Even as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow wickedness, reap the same.
9 By the blast of God they perish, and by the breath of his nostrils are they consumed.
10 The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions, are broken.
11 The old lion perisheth for lack of prey, and the stout lion's whelps are scattered abroad.
12 Now a thing was secretly brought to me, and mine ear received a little thereof.
13 In thoughts from the visions of the night, when deep sleep falleth on men,
14 Fear came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones to shake.
15 Then a spirit passed before my face; the hair of my flesh stood up:
16 It stood still, but I could not discern the form thereof: an image was before mine eyes, there was silence, and I heard a voice, saying,
17 Shall mortal man be more just than God? shall a man be more pure than his maker?
18 Behold, he put no trust in his servants; and his angels he charged with folly:
19 How much less in them that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, which are crushed before the moth?
20 They are destroyed from morning to evening: they perish for ever without any regarding it.
21 Doth not their excellency which is in them go away? they die, even without wisdom.

4 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said:
2 “If one attempts a word with you, will you become weary?
But who can withhold himself from speaking?
3 Surely you have instructed many,
And you (A)have strengthened weak hands.
4 Your words have upheld him who was stumbling,
And you (B)have strengthened the [a]feeble knees;
5 But now it comes upon you, and you are weary;
It touches you, and you are troubled.
6 Is not (C)your reverence (D)your confidence?
And the integrity of your ways your hope?
7 “Remember now, (E)who ever perished being innocent?

They die, even without wisdom.’
