39 “Do you know when the mountain goats are born?
Do you watch when the mother deer gives birth?
2 Do you know how many months they must carry their babies?
Do you know when it is the right time for them to be born?
3 These animals lie down, they feel their birth pains,
and their babies are born.
4 Their babies grow strong out in the wild.
Then they leave their mothers and never come back.
5 “Who let the wild donkeys go free?
Who untied their ropes and let them loose?
6 I let the wild donkey have the desert for a home.
I gave the salt lands to them for a place to live.
7 They are happy to be away from the noise of the city.
They never have to listen to their drivers shouting at them.
8 They live in the mountains.
That is their pasture.
That is where they look for food to eat.
9 “Will a wild bull agree to serve you?
Will he stay in your barn at night?
10 Will he let you put ropes on him
to plow your fields?
11 A wild bull is very strong,
but can you trust him to do your work?
12 Can you trust him to gather your grain
and bring it to your threshing place?
13 “An ostrich gets excited and flaps its wings, but it cannot fly.
Its wings and feathers are not like the wings of a stork.
14 An ostrich lays her eggs on the ground
and lets the sand keep them warm.
15 The ostrich forgets that someone might step on her eggs
or that a wild animal might break them.
16 An ostrich leaves her little babies.
She treats them as if they were not her own.
If her babies die, she does not care that all her work was for nothing.
17 That’s because I did not give wisdom to the ostrich.
She is foolish, and I made her that way.
18 But when the ostrich gets up to run, she laughs at the horse and its rider,
because she can run faster than any horse.
19 “Did you give the horse its strength?
Did you put the mane[a] on its neck?
20 Did you make it able to jump like a locust
or snort[b] so loudly that it scares people?
21 A horse is happy to be so strong.
It scratches the ground with its foot and runs into battle.
22 It laughs at fear; nothing makes it afraid!
It does not run away from battle.
23 The soldier’s quiver shakes on the horse’s side.
The spear and weapons its rider carries shine in the sun.
24 The horse gets very excited and races over the ground.[c]
When it hears the trumpet blow, it cannot stand still.
25 When the trumpet sounds, it snorts, ‘Hurray!’
It can smell the battle from far away
and hear the shouts of commanders with all the other sounds of battle.
26 “Did you teach the hawk how to spread its wings and fly south[d]?
27 Are you the one who told the eagle[e] to fly high into the sky?
Did you tell it to build its nest high in the mountains?
28 It lives high on a peak at the top of a cliff.
That is its fortress.
29 From there it looks far into the distance,
searching for its food.
30 The eagles gather around dead bodies,
and their young eat the blood.”

39 “Do you know the time when the wild (A)mountain goats bear young?
Or can you mark when (B)the deer gives birth?
2 Can you number the months that they fulfill?
Or do you know the time when they bear young?
3 They bow down,
They bring forth their young,
They deliver their [a]offspring.
4 Their young ones are healthy,
They grow strong with grain;
They depart and do not return to them.
5 “Who set the wild donkey free?
Who loosed the bonds of the [b]onager,
6 (C)Whose home I have made the wilderness,
And the [c]barren land his dwelling?
7 He scorns the tumult of the city;
He does not heed the shouts of the driver.
8 The range of the mountains is his pasture,
And he searches after (D)every green thing.
9 “Will the (E)wild ox be willing to serve you?
Will he bed by your manger?
10 Can you bind the wild ox in the furrow with ropes?
Or will he plow the valleys behind you?
11 Will you trust him because his strength is great?
Or will you leave your labor to him?
12 Will you trust him to bring home your [d]grain,
And gather it to your threshing floor?
13 “The wings of the ostrich wave proudly,
But are her wings and pinions like the kindly stork’s?
14 For she leaves her eggs on the ground,
And warms them in the dust;
15 She forgets that a foot may crush them,
Or that a wild beast may break them.
16 She (F)treats her young harshly, as though they were not hers;
Her labor is in vain, without [e]concern,
17 Because God deprived her of wisdom,
And did not (G)endow her with understanding.
18 When she lifts herself on high,
She scorns the horse and its rider.
19 “Have you given the horse strength?
Have you clothed his neck with [f]thunder?
20 Can you [g]frighten him like a locust?
His majestic snorting strikes terror.
21 He paws in the valley, and rejoices in his strength;
(H)He gallops into the clash of arms.
22 He mocks at fear, and is not frightened;
Nor does he turn back from the sword.
23 The quiver rattles against him,
The glittering spear and javelin.
24 He devours the distance with fierceness and rage;
Nor does he come to a halt because the trumpet has sounded.
25 At the blast of the trumpet he says, ‘Aha!’
He smells the battle from afar,
The thunder of captains and shouting.
26 “Does the hawk fly by your wisdom,
And spread its wings toward the south?
27 Does the (I)eagle mount up at your command,
And (J)make its nest on high?
28 On the rock it dwells and resides,
On the crag of the rock and the stronghold.
29 From there it spies out the prey;
Its eyes observe from afar.
30 Its young ones suck up blood;
And (K)where the slain are, there it is.”

11 Ngươi sẽ cậy vào nó vì sức lực của nó mạnh mẽ sao?
Ngươi sẽ giao công việc nặng nhọc của đồng áng cho nó sao?
12 Ngươi tin rằng nó có thể mang lúa về,
Và đem lúa vào sân đập lúa của ngươi sao?
13 Chim đà điểu vỗ cánh điên cuồng;
Nhưng cánh và lông ấy không thể sánh bằng cánh hạc.
14 Vì nó đẻ trứng rồi trao cho đất;
Ðể hơi ấm của đất ấp các trứng nó nở ra.
15 Nó quên rằng một bàn chân có thể đạp bể các trứng ấy,
Hoặc thú hoang có thể giẫm nát các trứng ấy đi.
16 Nó đối xử với các con nó thô bạo như thể chúng không là con nó;
Nó chẳng màng dù công sức của nó luống công.
17 Vì Ðức Chúa Trời đã không ban khôn ngoan cho nó;
Ngài cũng không phú thông sáng cho nó.
18 Thế nhưng khi nó đập cánh để bắt đầu vụt chạy,
Thì cả ngựa và người cỡi ngựa đều bị nó nhạo cười.
19 Có phải ngươi ban cho ngựa sức lực dẻo dai,
Hay ngươi khoác trên cổ ngựa cái bờm lông dài óng ả?
20 Ngươi có thể khiến nó phóng tới như con cào cào búng nhảy?
Tiếng hí dương oai của nó làm người ta hồn phi phách tán.
21 Nó giậm chân hất đất dưới thung lũng và lấy làm hứng chí vì sức lực của nó;
Nó lao mình vào chiến trận và bất chấp gươm đao.
22 Nó cười ngạo nghễ trước sự sợ hãi, và nó chẳng sợ gì;
Trước rừng gươm nhọn nó không nao núng bỏ chạy.
23 Trên lưng nó tên trong ống đụng nhau kêu lách cách;
Giáo và lao lóng lánh nó chẳng coi ra gì.
24 Nó hăng tiết, hí lên, và lao vào chiến trận;
Nó không thể đứng yên khi nghe kèn xung trận thổi vang.
25 Khi kèn trận thổi, nó nói, ‘A ha!’
Nó có thể đánh mùi chiến trận từ xa;
Nó có thể phân biệt tiếng hô xung trận của các vị chỉ huy và tiếng thét xáp chiến của đoàn quân.
26 Có phải nhờ sự khôn ngoan của ngươi mà ó diều bay được?
Hay nhờ ngươi mà nó có thể dang cánh bay tận trời nam?
27 Có phải vâng lịnh ngươi mà phượng hoàng cất cánh,
Bay vút trời xanh và làm tổ trên cao?
28 Nó chọn kẽ nứt của gành đá trên cao làm nhà để ở;
Trong hốc đá trên non nó chọn làm chỗ ở kiên cố cho mình.
29 Từ trên đó nó phóng tầm mắt ra xa để kiếm mồi;
Mắt nó có thể nhìn thấy con mồi ở tận đằng xa.
30 Các con nhỏ của nó nuốt lấy máu của con mồi;
Hễ xác chết ở đâu nó sẽ bâu lại đó.
