39 Knowest thou the time when the wild goats bring forth among the rocks, or hast thou observed the hinds when they fawn?
2 Hast thou numbered the months of their conceiving, or knowest thou the time when they bring forth?
3 They bow themselves to bring forth young, and they cast them, and send forth roarings.
4 Their young are weaned and go to feed: they go forth, and return not to them.
5 Who hath sent out the wild ass free, and who hath loosed his bonds?
6 To whom I have given a house in the wilderness, and his dwellings in the barren land.
7 He scorneth the multitude of the city, he heareth not the cry of the driver.
8 He looketh round about the mountains of his pasture, and seeketh for every green thing.
9 Shall the rhinoceros be willing to serve thee, or will he stay at thy crib?
10 Canst thou bind the rhinoceros with thy thong to plough, or will he break the clods of the valleys after thee?
11 Wilt thou have confidence in his great strength, and leave thy labours to him?
12 Wilt thou trust him that he will render thee the seed, and gather it into thy barnfloor?
13 The wing of the ostrich is like the wings of the heron, and of the hawk.
14 When she leaveth her eggs on the earth, thou perhaps wilt warm them in the dust.
15 She forgetteth that the foot may tread upon them, or that the beasts of the field may break them.
16 She is hardened against her young ones, as though they were not hers, she hath laboured in vain, no fear constraining her.
17 For God hath deprived her of wisdom, neither hath he given her understanding.
18 When time shall be, she setteth up her wings on high: she scorneth the horse and his rider.
19 Wilt thou give strength to the horse, or clothe his neck with neighing?
20 Wilt thou lift him up like the locusts? the glory of his nostrils is terror.
21 He breaketh up the earth with his hoof, he pranceth boldly, he goeth forward to meet armed men.
22 He despiseth fear, he turneth not his back to the sword,
23 Above him shall the quiver rattle, the spear and shield shall glitter.
24 Chasing and raging he swalloweth the ground, neither doth he make account when the noise of the trumpet soundeth.
25 When he heareth the trumpet he saith: Ha, ha: he smelleth the battle afar off, the encouraging of the captains, and the shouting of the army.
26 Doth the hawk wax feathered by thy wisdom, spreading her wings to the south?
27 Will the eagle mount up at thy command, and make her nest in high places?
28 She abideth among the rocks, and dwelleth among cragged flints, and stony hills, where there is no access.
29 From thence she looketh for the prey, and her eyes behold afar off.
30 Her young ones shall suck up blood: and wheresoever the carcass shall be, she is immediately there.
31 And the Lord went on, and said to Job:
32 Shall he that contendeth with God be so easily silenced? surely he that reproveth God, ought to answer him.
33 Then Job answered the Lord, and said:
34 What can I answer, who hath spoken inconsiderately? I will lay my hand upon my mouth.
35 One thing I have spoken, which I wish I had not said: and another, to which I will add no more.

The Mountain Goat and the Deer
1 “Do you know when the mountain goats give birth?
Have you ever observed deer in labor?
2 Can you accurately number the months that they carry their young
or know the time of their delivery
3 when they crouch down to give birth
and deliver their offspring?
4 Once their fawns grow strong and become independent,
they go forth on their own and do not return.
The Wild Donkey and the Wild Ox
5 “Who has given the wild donkey its freedom?
Who has untied its ropes?
6 I gave it the wastelands as its home
and the salt flats for its dwelling.
7 It scorns the noise of the city;
it is not forced to obey a driver’s shouted order.
8 The mountains are the pasture over which it ranges
in search of any green foliage.
9 “Is the wild ox willing to serve you?
Will it stay by your manger during the night?
10 Can you use ropes to harness its strength?
Will it harrow the furrows after you?
11 Can you depend upon its massive strength
to do your heavy work?
12 Can you rely upon it to return home
and bring your grain to your threshing floor?
The Ostrich and the Horse[a]
13 “The wings of an ostrich are ineffectual,
since its pinions and its plumage are scanty.
14 It leaves its eggs on the ground
and depends on the earth to warm them,
15 forgetting that a foot may crush them
or that a wild animal may trample upon them.
16 It cruelly disowns its young
as if they were not its own,
unconcerned if its labor has been wasted.
17 For God has denied it wisdom
and deprived it of understanding.
18 Yet with its swiftness of foot
it leaves both horse and rider in the dust.
19 “Do you give the horse its strength?
Have you clothed its neck with a mane?
20 Do you make it leap like a locust,
striking terror with its proud snorting?
21 It paws the plain jubilantly and prances
as it charges the battle line with all its strength.
22 It laughs at fear and is frightened of nothing;
it does not shy away when confronted with the sword.
23 “The quiver rattles at its side;
the spear and the javelin flash.
24 Trembling with eagerness it eats up the ground,
and when the trumpet sounds, there is no holding it back.
25 At each blast of the trumpet it cries ‘Aha!’
From afar it scents the battle,
the shouts of the commanders, and the war cries.
The Hawk and the Eagle
26 “Did your wisdom enable the hawk to soar
as it spreads its wings toward the south?
27 Does the eagle soar aloft at your command
to build its nest on the lofty heights?
28 It dwells on the cliff in security,
spending its nights on a rocky crag.
29 From there it watches for its prey;
its eyes are able to behold it from afar.
30 Its young ones hungrily drink the blood;
wherever the slain are, it is there.”

39 “Alam mo ba kung kailan nanganganak ang mga kambing-gubat? Nakakita ka na ba ng usa na nanganganak? 2 Binibilang mo ba ang mga buwan ng kanilang pagbubuntis hanggang sa sila ay manganak? At alam mo rin ba kung kailan sila manganganak? 3 Nakayukyok silaʼt nagtitiis ng hirap hanggang sa makapanganak. 4 Paglaki ng kanilang mga anak sa kagubatan, umaalis sila at hindi na bumabalik.
5 “Sino ang nagpalaya sa asnong-gubat? 6 Ibinigay ko sa kanya ang ilang para kanyang tirhan, pinatira ko siya sa lupaing pinabayaan. 7 Lumalayo siya sa maingay na bayan at ayaw niyang siya ay mapaamo. 8 Paikot-ikot siya sa mga kabundukan para maghanap ng sariwang pastulan.
9 “Mapagtatrabaho mo ba ang bakang-gubat? Mapapanatili mo kaya siya sa kanyang kulungan kung gabi? 10 Matatalian mo kaya siya at mapag-aararo sa iyong bukid? 11 Makakaasa ka kaya sa lakas niya para gawin ang mabibigat na gawain? 12 Maaasahan mo kaya siyang tipunin at hakutin ang iyong ani papunta sa giikan?
13 “Napakagandang tingnan ng pakpak ng malaking ibong[a] kapag itoʼy pumapagaspas, pero hindi nito mapantayan ang ganda ng pakpak ng tagak. 14 Iniiwanan ng malaking ibong ito ang kanyang mga itlog sa lupa para mainitan. 15 Hindi siya nag-aalalang baka matapakan ito o madaganan ng mga hayop sa gubat. 16 Malupit siya sa kanyang mga sisiw, parang hindi kanya kung ituring. Hindi siya nag-aalala na ang pinaghirapan niya ay mawawalan ng kabuluhan. 17 Sapagkat hindi ko siya binigyan ng karunungan at pang-unawa. 18 Pero kapag tumakbo na siya, tinatawanan niya ang kabayo at ang sakay nito.
19 “Job, ikaw ba ang nagbibigay ng lakas sa kabayo? Ikaw din ba ang naglagay ng kanyang kiling?[b] 20 Ikaw ba ang nagpapalukso sa kanya gaya ng isang balang at nagpapatakot sa mga tao kapag siya ay sumisinghal? 21 Kumakahig siya sa lupa na parang ipinagmamalaki ang kanyang lakas. Pagkatapos ay tumatakbo siya papunta sa digmaan. 22 Wala siyang kinatatakutan, ni hindi siya natatakot sa espada.[c] 23 Kumakalansing at kumikislap ang mga sandata ng sumasakay sa kanya. 24 Lumilipad ang alikabok sa bilis ng kanyang pagtakbo. Hindi na siya mapigilan kapag tumunog na ang trumpeta. 25 Sumisinghal siya kapag naririnig ang trumpeta. Naaamoy niya ang digmaan kahit sa malayo, at naririnig niya ang ingay ng digmaan at ang sigaw ng mga kumander.
26 “Ikaw ba ang nagtuturo sa lawin na lumipad at pumunta sa timog? 27 Ikaw ba ang nag-uutos sa agila na lumipad at gumawa ng kanyang pugad sa mataas na dako? 28 Nakatira ang agila sa mataas na bato. Ang matarik na lugar ang kanyang taguan. 29 Mula roon naghahanap siya ng madadagit, kahit ang malayo ay naaabot ng kanyang paningin. 30 At kapag may nakita siyang bangkay ay pinupuntahan niya, at ang dugo nito ang iniinom ng kanyang mga inakay.”
