Job 14

New International Version

14 “Mortals, born of woman,^(A)
    are of few days^(B) and full of trouble.^(C)
²They spring up like flowers^(D) and wither away;^(E)
    like fleeting shadows,^(F) they do not endure.^(G)
³Do you fix your eye on them?^(H)
    Will you bring them^[a] before you for judgment?^(I)
⁴Who can bring what is pure^(J) from the impure?^(K)
    No one!^(L)
⁵A person’s days are determined;^(M)
    you have decreed the number of his months^(N)
    and have set limits he cannot exceed.^(O)
⁶So look away from him and let him alone,^(P)
    till he has put in his time like a hired laborer.^(Q)

⁷“At least there is hope for a tree:^(R)
    If it is cut down, it will sprout again,
    and its new shoots^(S) will not fail.^(T)
⁸Its roots may grow old in the ground
    and its stump^(U) die in the soil,
⁹yet at the scent of water^(V) it will bud
    and put forth shoots like a plant.^(W)
¹⁰But a man dies and is laid low;^(X)
    he breathes his last and is no more.^(Y)
¹¹As the water of a lake dries up
    or a riverbed becomes parched and dry,^(Z)
¹²so he lies down and does not rise;^(AA)
    till the heavens are no more,^(AB) people will not awake
    or be roused from their sleep.^(AC)

¹³“If only you would hide me in the grave^(AD)
    and conceal me till your anger has passed!^(AE)
If only you would set me a time
    and then remember^(AF) me!^(AG)
¹⁴If someone dies, will they live again?
    All the days of my hard service^(AH)
    I will wait for my renewal^[b]^(AI) to come.
¹⁵You will call and I will answer you;^(AJ)
    you will long for the creature your hands have made.^(AK)
¹⁶Surely then you will count my steps^(AL)
    but not keep track of my sin.^(AM)
¹⁷My offenses will be sealed^(AN) up in a bag;^(AO)
    you will cover over my sin.^(AP)

¹⁸“But as a mountain erodes and crumbles^(AQ)
    and as a rock is moved from its place,^(AR)
¹⁹as water wears away stones
    and torrents^(AS) wash away the soil,^(AT)
    so you destroy a person’s hope.^(AU)
²⁰You overpower them once for all, and they are gone;^(AV)
    you change their countenance and send them away.^(AW)
²¹If their children are honored, they do not know it;
    if their offspring are brought low, they do not see it.^(AX)
²²They feel but the pain of their own bodies^(AY)
    and mourn only for themselves.^(AZ)”

Galatians 6

New International Version

Doing Good to All

6 Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit^(A) should restore^(B) that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. ²Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.^(C) ³If anyone thinks they are something^(D) when they are not, they deceive themselves.^(E) ⁴Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone,^(F) without comparing themselves to someone else,^(G) ⁵for each one should carry their own load.^(H) ⁶Nevertheless, the one who receives instruction in the word should share all good things with their instructor.^(I)

⁷Do not be deceived:^(J) God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.^(K) ⁸Whoever sows to please their flesh,^(L) from the flesh will reap destruction;^(M) whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.^(N) ⁹Let us not become weary in doing good,^(O) for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.^(P) ¹⁰Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good^(Q) to all people, especially to those who belong to the family^(R) of believers.

Not Circumcision but the New Creation

¹¹See what large letters I use as I write to you with my own hand!^(S)

¹²Those who want to impress people by means of the flesh^(T) are trying to compel you to be circumcised.^(U) The only reason they do this is to avoid being persecuted^(V) for the cross of Christ. ¹³Not even those who are circumcised keep the law,^(W) yet they want you to be circumcised that they may boast about your circumcision in the flesh.^(X) ¹⁴May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ,^(Y) through which^[a] the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.^(Z) ¹⁵Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything;^(AA) what counts is the new creation.^(AB) ¹⁶Peace and mercy to all who follow this rule—to^[b] the Israel of God.

¹⁷From now on, let no one cause me trouble, for I bear on my body the marks^(AC) of Jesus.

¹⁸The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ^(AD) be with your spirit,^(AE) brothers and sisters. Amen.

¹Rescue me,^(A) Lord, from evildoers;
    protect me from the violent,^(B)
²who devise evil plans^(C) in their hearts
    and stir up war^(D) every day.
³They make their tongues as sharp as^(E) a serpent’s;
    the poison of vipers^(F) is on their lips.^[b]

⁴Keep me safe,^(G) Lord, from the hands of the wicked;^(H)
    protect me from the violent,
    who devise ways to trip my feet.
⁵The arrogant have hidden a snare^(I) for me;
    they have spread out the cords of their net^(J)
    and have set traps^(K) for me along my path.

⁶I say to the Lord, “You are my God.”^(L)
    Hear, Lord, my cry for mercy.^(M)

    into miry pits, never to rise.
¹¹May slanderers not be established in the land;

¹²I know that the Lord secures justice for the poor^(S)
