Satan Allowed to Test Job

Now there was a day when (A)the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and (B)Satan[a] also came among them. The Lord said to Satan, “From where have you come?” Satan answered the Lord and said, “From (C)going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it.”

  1. Job 1:6 Hebrew the Accuser or the Adversary; so throughout chapters 1–2

12 “How (A)you are fallen from heaven,
    O Day Star, (B)son of Dawn!
How you are cut down to the ground,
    you who laid the nations low!
13 You said in your heart,
    (C)‘I will ascend to heaven;
above the stars of God
    (D)I will set my throne on high;
I will sit on the mount of assembly
    in the far reaches of the north;[a]
14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds;
    I will make myself like the Most High.’
15 (E)But you are brought down to Sheol,
    to the far reaches of the pit.
16 Those who see you will stare at you
    and ponder over you:
‘Is this (F)the man who made the earth tremble,
    who shook kingdoms,
17 who made the world like a desert
    and overthrew its cities,
    (G)who did not let his prisoners go home?’

  1. Isaiah 14:13 Or in the remote parts of Zaphon

And after fasting (A)forty days and forty nights, he (B)was hungry. And (C)the tempter came and said to him, “If you are (D)the Son of God, command (E)these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, (F)“It is written,

(G)“‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
    but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

(H)Then the devil took him to (I)the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,

(J)“‘He will command his angels concerning you,’

and

“‘On their hands they will bear you up,
    lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”

Jesus said to him, “Again (K)it is written, (L)‘You shall not (M)put the Lord your God to the test.’” (N)Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, (O)Satan! For (P)it is written,

(Q)“‘You shall worship the Lord your God
    and (R)him only shall you serve.’”

11 Then the devil left him, and behold, (S)angels came and were ministering to him.
