¹² “Now a word ^(A)was brought to me stealthily,
And my ear received a ^(B)whisper of it.
¹³ Amid disquieting ^(C)thoughts from the visions of the night,
When deep sleep falls on men,
¹⁴ Dread came upon me, and trembling,
And made the multitude of my bones shake in dread.
¹⁵ Then a ^[a]spirit swept by my face;
The hair of my flesh bristled up.
¹⁶ It stood still, but I could not recognize its appearance;
A form was before my eyes;
There was silence, then I heard a voice:
¹⁷ ‘Can ^(D)mankind be right ^[b]before God?
Can a man be pure ^[c]before his ^(E)Maker?

¹⁵ In a ^(A)dream, a vision of the night,
When deep sleep falls on men,
While they slumber in their beds,
¹⁶ Then ^(B)He opens the ears of men,
And seals in their discipline,
¹⁷ That He may turn man aside from his conduct,
And ^[a]keep man from pride;
¹⁸ He ^(C)holds back his soul from the pit,
And his life from passing over ^[b]to death ^(D)by a weapon.
