Elihu Rebukes Job

33 “But now, hear my speech, O Job,
    and listen to all my words.
Behold, I (A)open my mouth;
    the tongue in my mouth speaks.
My words declare the uprightness of my heart,
    and what my lips know they speak sincerely.
(B)The Spirit of God has made me,
    and (C)the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
(D)Answer me, if you can;
    (E)set your words in order before me; take your stand.
Behold, I am toward God as you are;
    I too was pinched off from a piece of (F)clay.
Behold, no (G)fear of me need terrify you;
    my (H)pressure will not be heavy upon you.

“Surely you have spoken in my ears,
    and I have heard the sound of your words.
You say, ‘I am (I)pure, without (J)transgression;
    I am clean, and there is no iniquity in me.
10 Behold, he finds occasions against me,
    he (K)counts me as his enemy,
11 he (L)puts my feet in the stocks
    and (M)watches all my paths.’

12 “Behold, in this you are not right. I will answer you,
    for God is greater than man.
13 Why do you (N)contend against him,
    saying, ‘He (O)will answer none of man's[a] words’?[b]
14 For God (P)speaks in one way,
    (Q)and in two, though man (R)does not perceive it.
15 In (S)a dream, in (T)a vision of (U)the night,
    when (V)deep sleep falls on men,
    while they slumber on their beds,
16 then he (W)opens the ears of men
    and terrifies[c] them with warnings,
17 that he may turn man aside from his (X)deed
    and conceal pride from a man;
18 he keeps back his soul from the pit,
    his life from (Y)perishing by the sword.

19 “Man is also rebuked with pain on his bed
    and with continual strife in his (Z)bones,
20 so that his (AA)life loathes bread,
    and his appetite (AB)the choicest food.
21 His flesh is so wasted away that it cannot be seen,
    and his bones that were not seen (AC)stick out.
22 His soul draws near (AD)the pit,
    and his life to (AE)those who bring death.
23 If there be for him (AF)an angel,
    (AG)a mediator, (AH)one of the thousand,
    to declare to man what is (AI)right for him,
24 and he is merciful to him, and says,
    ‘Deliver him from going down into the pit;
    I have found (AJ)a ransom;
25 let his flesh (AK)become fresh with youth;
    let him return to the days of his youthful vigor’;
26 then man[d] (AL)prays to God, and he accepts him;
    he (AM)sees his face with a shout of joy,
and he (AN)restores to man his righteousness.
27     He sings before men and says:
‘I (AO)sinned and perverted what was right,
    and it was not repaid to me.
28 He has redeemed my (AP)soul from going down (AQ)into the pit,
    and my life shall (AR)look upon the light.’

29 “Behold, God does all these things,
    twice, (AS)three times, with a man,
30 to bring back his soul from the pit,
    that he may be lighted with (AT)the light of life.
31 Pay attention, O Job, listen to me;
    be silent, and I will speak.
32 If you have any words, (AU)answer me;
    (AV)speak, for I desire to justify you.
33 If not, (AW)listen to me;
    be silent, and I will teach you wisdom.”

Greeting

Paul, (A)called (B)by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and our brother Sosthenes,

To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those (C)sanctified in Christ Jesus, (D)called to be saints together with all those who in every place (E)call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours:

(F)Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Thanksgiving

I (G)give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that was given you in Christ Jesus, that in every way (H)you were enriched in him in all (I)speech and all knowledge— even as (J)the testimony about Christ was confirmed among you— so that you are not lacking in any gift, as you (K)wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ, (L)who will sustain you to the end, (M)guiltless (N)in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. (O)God is faithful, by whom you were called into the (P)fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Divisions in the Church

10 I appeal to you, brothers,[a] by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no (Q)divisions among you, but that you be united (R)in the same mind and the same judgment. 11 For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there is (S)quarreling among you, my brothers. 12 What I mean is that (T)each one of you says, “I follow Paul,” or “I follow (U)Apollos,” or “I follow (V)Cephas,” or “I follow Christ.” 13 (W)Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you (X)baptized in the name of Paul? 14 I thank God that I baptized none of you except (Y)Crispus and (Z)Gaius, 15 so that no one may say that you were baptized in my name. 16 (I did baptize also (AA)the household of Stephanas. Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized anyone else.) 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and (AB)not with words of eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

Christ the Wisdom and Power of God

18 For the word of the cross is (AC)folly to (AD)those who are perishing, but to us (AE)who are being saved it is (AF)the power of God. 19 For it is written,

(AG)“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
    and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.”

20 (AH)Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? (AI)Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach[b] to save those who believe. 22 For (AJ)Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ (AK)crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, 24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ (AL)the power of God and (AM)the wisdom of God. 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

26 For consider your calling, brothers: (AN)not many of you were wise according to worldly standards,[c] not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. 27 But (AO)God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; (AP)God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; 28 God chose what is low and despised in the world, even (AQ)things that are not, to (AR)bring to nothing things that are, 29 so (AS)that no human being[d] might boast in the presence of God. 30 And because of him[e] you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us (AT)wisdom from God, (AU)righteousness and (AV)sanctification and (AW)redemption, 31 so that, as it is written, (AX)“Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”

Proclaiming Christ Crucified

And I, when I came to you, brothers,[f] (AY)did not come proclaiming to you (AZ)the testimony[g] of God with lofty speech or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except (BA)Jesus Christ and him crucified. And (BB)I was with you (BC)in weakness and in fear and much trembling, and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of (BD)the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men[h] but (BE)in the power of God.

Wisdom from the Spirit

Yet among (BF)the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not (BG)a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, (BH)who are doomed to pass away. But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, (BI)which God decreed before the ages for our glory. None of (BJ)the rulers of this age understood this, for (BK)if they had, they would not have crucified (BL)the Lord of glory. But, as it is written,

(BM)“What no eye has seen, nor ear heard,
    nor the heart of man imagined,
what God has (BN)prepared (BO)for those who love him”—

10 these things (BP)God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even (BQ)the depths of God. 11 For who knows a person's thoughts (BR)except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 Now (BS)we have received not (BT)the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. 13 And we impart this (BU)in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, (BV)interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.[i]

14 The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are (BW)folly to him, and (BX)he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. 15 The (BY)spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one. 16 (BZ)“For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But (CA)we have the mind of Christ.

Divisions in the Church

But I, brothers,[j] could not address you as (CB)spiritual people, but as (CC)people of the flesh, as (CD)infants in Christ. (CE)I fed you with milk, not solid food, for (CF)you were not ready for it. And even now you are not yet ready, for you are still of the flesh. For while there is (CG)jealousy and strife among you, are you not of the flesh and behaving only in a human way? For (CH)when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,” (CI)are you not being merely human?

What then is Apollos? What is Paul? (CJ)Servants through whom you believed, (CK)as the Lord assigned to each. (CL)I planted, (CM)Apollos watered, (CN)but God gave the growth. So (CO)neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. He who plants and he who waters are one, and each (CP)will receive his wages according to his labor. For we are (CQ)God's fellow workers. You are God's field, (CR)God's building.

10 (CS)According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled[k] master builder I laid a (CT)foundation, and (CU)someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it. 11 For no one can lay a (CV)foundation other (CW)than that which is laid, (CX)which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw— 13 (CY)each one's work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed (CZ)by fire, and (DA)the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. 14 If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, (DB)he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone's work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, (DC)but only as through fire.

16 (DD)Do you not know that you[l] are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you? 17 If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him. For (DE)God's temple is holy, and you are that temple.

18 (DF)Let no one deceive himself. (DG)If anyone among you thinks that he is wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. 19 For (DH)the wisdom of this world is folly with God. For it is written, (DI)“He catches the wise in their craftiness,” 20 and again, (DJ)“The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.” 21 So (DK)let no one boast in men. For (DL)all things are yours, 22 whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future—all are yours, 23 and (DM)you are Christ's, and (DN)Christ is God's.

To the church of God(D) in Corinth,(E) to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called(F) to be his holy people, together with all those everywhere who call on the name(G) of our Lord Jesus Christ—their Lord and ours:

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.(H)

Thanksgiving

I always thank my God for you(I) because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus. For in him you have been enriched(J) in every way—with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge(K) God thus confirming our testimony(L) about Christ among you. Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift(M) as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed.(N) He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless(O) on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.(P) God is faithful,(Q) who has called you(R) into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.(S)

A Church Divided Over Leaders

10 I appeal to you, brothers and sisters,[a](T) in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you,(U) but that you be perfectly united(V) in mind and thought. 11 My brothers and sisters, some from Chloe’s household(W) have informed me that there are quarrels among you. 12 What I mean is this: One of you says, “I follow Paul”;(X) another, “I follow Apollos”;(Y) another, “I follow Cephas[b]”;(Z) still another, “I follow Christ.”

13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized in the name of Paul?(AA) 14 I thank God that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus(AB) and Gaius,(AC) 15 so no one can say that you were baptized in my name. 16 (Yes, I also baptized the household(AD) of Stephanas;(AE) beyond that, I don’t remember if I baptized anyone else.) 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize,(AF) but to preach the gospel—not with wisdom(AG) and eloquence, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

Christ Crucified Is God’s Power and Wisdom

18 For the message of the cross is foolishness(AH) to those who are perishing,(AI) but to us who are being saved(AJ) it is the power of God.(AK) 19 For it is written:

“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise;
    the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.”[c](AL)

20 Where is the wise person?(AM) Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age?(AN) Has not God made foolish(AO) the wisdom of the world? 21 For since in the wisdom of God the world(AP) through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save(AQ) those who believe.(AR) 22 Jews demand signs(AS) and Greeks look for wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified:(AT) a stumbling block(AU) to Jews and foolishness(AV) to Gentiles, 24 but to those whom God has called,(AW) both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God(AX) and the wisdom of God.(AY) 25 For the foolishness(AZ) of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness(BA) of God is stronger than human strength.

26 Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called.(BB) Not many of you were wise(BC) by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose(BD) the foolish(BE) things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28 God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not(BF)—to nullify the things that are, 29 so that no one may boast before him.(BG) 30 It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus,(BH) who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness,(BI) holiness(BJ) and redemption.(BK) 31 Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”[d](BL)

And so it was with me, brothers and sisters. When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom(BM) as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God.[e] For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.(BN) I came to you(BO) in weakness(BP) with great fear and trembling.(BQ) My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words,(BR) but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power,(BS) so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.(BT)

God’s Wisdom Revealed by the Spirit

We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature,(BU) but not the wisdom of this age(BV) or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.(BW) No, we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery(BX) that has been hidden(BY) and that God destined for our glory before time began. None of the rulers of this age(BZ) understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.(CA) However, as it is written:

“What no eye has seen,
    what no ear has heard,
and what no human mind has conceived”[f]
    the things God has prepared for those who love him—(CB)

10 these are the things God has revealed(CC) to us by his Spirit.(CD)

The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11 For who knows a person’s thoughts(CE) except their own spirit(CF) within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 What we have received is not the spirit(CG) of the world,(CH) but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. 13 This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom(CI) but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.[g] 14 The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God(CJ) but considers them foolishness,(CK) and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit. 15 The person with the Spirit(CL) makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments, 16 for,

“Who has known the mind of the Lord
    so as to instruct him?”[h](CM)

But we have the mind of Christ.(CN)

The Church and Its Leaders

Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit(CO) but as people who are still worldly(CP)—mere infants(CQ) in Christ. I gave you milk, not solid food,(CR) for you were not yet ready for it.(CS) Indeed, you are still not ready. You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling(CT) among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans? For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,”(CU) are you not mere human beings?

What, after all, is Apollos?(CV) And what is Paul? Only servants,(CW) through whom you came to believe—as the Lord has assigned to each his task. I planted the seed,(CX) Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and they will each be rewarded according to their own labor.(CY) For we are co-workers in God’s service;(CZ) you are God’s field,(DA) God’s building.(DB)

10 By the grace God has given me,(DC) I laid a foundation(DD) as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.(DE) 12 If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13 their work will be shown for what it is,(DF) because the Day(DG) will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work.(DH) 14 If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward.(DI) 15 If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames.(DJ)

16 Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple(DK) and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?(DL) 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for God’s temple is sacred, and you together are that temple.

18 Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise(DM) by the standards of this age,(DN) you should become “fools” so that you may become wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness(DO) in God’s sight. As it is written: “He catches the wise in their craftiness”[i];(DP) 20 and again, “The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile.”[j](DQ) 21 So then, no more boasting about human leaders!(DR) All things are yours,(DS) 22 whether Paul or Apollos(DT) or Cephas[k](DU) or the world or life or death or the present or the future(DV)—all are yours, 23 and you are of Christ,(DW) and Christ is of God.
