Het einde van de koning van Babel
14 Jesaja zegt: Want de Heer zal medelijden hebben met het volk Israël. Opnieuw zal Hij Israël uitkiezen. Opnieuw zal Hij het volk in zijn eigen land laten wonen. Dan zullen de vreemdelingen zich bij hen aansluiten. Ze zullen bij Israël willen horen. 2 De volken zullen de Israëlieten komen halen en Israël naar zijn eigen plaats brengen. Ze zullen de slaven worden van de Israëlieten, in het land dat Israël van de Heer heeft gekregen. Zo zullen de volken die eerst de Israëlieten gevangen hadden genomen, nu zelf gevangenen zijn. Zo zullen de Israëlieten heersen over de volken die eerst over hen heersten. 3 In die tijd zal de Heer een einde maken aan jullie verdriet en jullie slavernij. 4 En dan zullen jullie een spotlied maken op de koning van Babel:
"Het is afgelopen met de onderdrukker!
Het is afgelopen met die gouden stad!
5 De Heer heeft de macht gebroken
van de mensen die zich niets van Hem aantrekken.
6 Hij heeft de macht gebroken
van de koningen die zonder ophouden en zonder medelijden de landen veroverden,
zonder dat iemand hen kon tegenhouden.
7 Maar nu heeft de hele aarde rust.
Iedereen juicht en is blij.
8 Zelfs de cipressen zijn blij met de vrede,
samen met de cederbomen van de Libanon.
Ze zeggen: 'Sinds jij bent neergeslagen,
komt niemand ons meer omhakken.'
9 Het dodenrijk is in rep en roer om je te ontvangen, koning van Babel!
De geesten van mensen die allang dood zijn,
worden voor jou wakker gemaakt.
De geesten van gestorven koningen staan op van hun troon.
10 Ze heten je welkom met de woorden: 'Jij bent nu net als wij je kracht kwijt.
Je bent nu één van ons.
11 Je rijkdom en je muziek zijn met jou verdwenen.
Voortaan zijn wormen je matras en larven je deken.'
12 Morgenster, zoon van het ochtendlicht, wat ben je diep gevallen!
Jij die over de volken heerste, bent neergeslagen.
13 En je dacht nog wel: 'Ik zal opstijgen naar de hemel,
en hoog boven de sterren[a] van God mijn troon neerzetten.
Ik zal op mijn troon zitten op de berg
waar de engelen voor de troon van God samenkomen,
ver in het noorden.
14 Ik zal hoog boven de wolken op mijn troon zitten.
Ik zal net zo machtig zijn als de Allerhoogste God.'
15 Maar wat is er van je geworden?
Je bent in het dodenrijk neergestort,
in het diepst van de aarde!
16 Wie jou nu zien, kijken verbaasd naar je.
Ze denken: 'Is dit nu de man voor wie de hele wereld bang was?
Is dit de man voor wie de koningen beefden?
17 Die de wereld veranderde in een wildernis?
Die alle steden verwoestte?
Die nooit een gevangene naar huis terug liet gaan?'
18 De koningen van de aarde worden allemaal in een schitterend graf begraven.
19 Maar jij bent ver van je graf neergegooid,
weggesmeten als een rotte tak,
in een kuil bedolven onder lijken van gedode krijgers,
vertrapt als een dood dier.
20 Je bent niet begraven bij de koningen,
omdat je je eigen land hebt verwoest
en je eigen volk hebt gedood.
Over je kinderen, jij schurk, zal niet eens worden gesproken.
21 Maak een slachtbank klaar om ze te doden,
om ze te straffen voor de slechtheid van hun vader.
Nooit mogen zij de kans krijgen om de aarde te veroveren
en de wereld vol te bouwen met hun steden."
22 "Zo zal Ik Babel straffen," zegt de Heer van de hemelse legers. "Ik zal Babel met wortel en tak uitrukken. Niemand zal overblijven, helemaal niemand. De naam zal worden vergeten. 23 Ik zal er een moerasland van maken, met alleen nog watervogels. Ik zal het land leeg vegen met mijn alles-verwoestende bezem, zegt de Heer van de hemelse legers.
24 Ik zweer dat Ik zal doen wat Ik van plan was. Zoals Ik het heb besloten, zo zal het ook gebeuren, zegt de Heer van de hemelse legers. 25 Ik zal Assurs macht in mijn land vernietigen. Ik zal Assur vertrappen op mijn bergen. Dan zal het juk dat Assur op de schouders van mijn volk had gelegd, worden weggehaald. Mijn volk zal niet langer door Assur onderdrukt worden."[b]
26 Dit is wat de Heer heeft besloten over dat hele volk. Dit is wat de Heer zal doen met alle volken. 27 Want de Heer van de hemelse legers heeft het besloten. Wie kan Hem nog van gedachten laten veranderen? Dit is wat Hij gaat doen. Wie kan Hem nog tegenhouden?
Gods woorden over de Filistijnen
28 Jesaja zegt: In het jaar dat koning Achaz van Juda stierf, moest ik van de Heer zeggen:
29 "Filistea, juich maar niet over Achaz' dood! Want koning Achaz, de stok waarmee Ik jullie sloeg, is wel vernietigd, maar zijn zoon is nog gevaarlijker.[c] De koning was een slang, maar zijn zoon is een adder, en uit de adder wordt een draak geboren! 30 De allerarmste mensen van mijn volk zullen veilig wonen en te eten hebben. Maar júllie, Filistijnen, zullen sterven van de honger! En de mensen die de hongersnood overleven, zullen door hem worden gedood. 31 Huil, wijze mannen in de stadspoorten! Schreeuw, bewoners van de stad! Beef van angst, Filistea! Want uit het noorden komt in een enorme stofwolk een groot leger aan. Dat hele leger rukt vast aaneen gesloten tegen jullie op.
32 Wat voor antwoord zullen de boodschappers krijgen die jullie hebben gestuurd? Dit: de Heer zorgt dat Jeruzalem stevig blijft staan. De arme mensen van zijn volk zullen veilig zijn binnen de muren."

- Jesaja 14:13 Met 'sterren' worden in de bijbel vaak engelen bedoeld.
- Jesaja 14:25 Assur bestond inmiddels al niet meer, want het was veroverd door Babylonië. Waarschijnlijk wordt ermee bedoeld dat God een einde zal maken aan de gevangenschap van de bevolking van het koninkrijk Israël en dat de bevolking op een dag terug zal komen naar Israël.
- Jesaja 14:29 Koning Hizkia van Juda verwoestte de dorpen en steden van de Filistijnen. De 'draak' die daarna komt, zou dan koning Hizkia's zoon Manasse kunnen zijn, die veel slechte dingen deed. Lees 2 Koningen 18:8 en 2 Koningen 21:1 en 12. Maar hier kan ook een 'tweede laag' bedoeld zijn, die gaat over het eind van de tijd. Want God zegt dat Jeruzalem stevig zal blijven staan, terwijl Jeruzalem in Jesaja's tijd helemaal verwoest werd. Vergelijk met de strijd in Openbaring 20:7-10.

Escarnio contra el rey de Babilonia
14 Porque Jehová tendrá piedad de Jacob, y todavía escogerá a Israel, y lo hará reposar en su tierra; y a ellos se unirán extranjeros, y se juntarán a la familia de Jacob. 2 Y los tomarán los pueblos, y los traerán a su lugar; y la casa de Israel los poseerá por siervos y criadas en la tierra de Jehová; y cautivarán a los que los cautivaron, y señorearán sobre los que los oprimieron.
3 Y en el día que Jehová te dé reposo de tu trabajo y de tu temor, y de la dura servidumbre en que te hicieron servir, 4 pronunciarás este proverbio contra el rey de Babilonia, y dirás: ¡Cómo paró el opresor, cómo acabó la ciudad codiciosa de oro! 5 Quebrantó Jehová el báculo de los impíos, el cetro de los señores; 6 el que hería a los pueblos con furor, con llaga permanente, el que se enseñoreaba de las naciones con ira, y las perseguía con crueldad. 7 Toda la tierra está en reposo y en paz; se cantaron alabanzas. 8 Aun los cipreses se regocijaron a causa de ti, y los cedros del Líbano, diciendo: Desde que tú pereciste, no ha subido cortador contra nosotros. 9 El Seol abajo se espantó de ti; despertó muertos que en tu venida saliesen a recibirte, hizo levantar de sus sillas a todos los príncipes de la tierra, a todos los reyes de las naciones. 10 Todos ellos darán voces, y te dirán: ¿Tú también te debilitaste como nosotros, y llegaste a ser como nosotros? 11 Descendió al Seol tu soberbia, y el sonido de tus arpas; gusanos serán tu cama, y gusanos te cubrirán.
12 ¡Cómo caíste del cielo,(A) oh Lucero, hijo de la mañana! Cortado fuiste por tierra, tú que debilitabas a las naciones. 13 Tú que decías en tu corazón: Subiré al cielo; en lo alto, junto a las estrellas de Dios, levantaré mi trono, y en el monte del testimonio me sentaré, a los lados del norte; 14 sobre las alturas de las nubes subiré, y seré semejante al Altísimo. 15 Mas tú derribado eres hasta el Seol,(B) a los lados del abismo. 16 Se inclinarán hacia ti los que te vean, te contemplarán, diciendo: ¿Es este aquel varón que hacía temblar la tierra, que trastornaba los reinos; 17 que puso el mundo como un desierto, que asoló sus ciudades, que a sus presos nunca abrió la cárcel? 18 Todos los reyes de las naciones, todos ellos yacen con honra cada uno en su morada; 19 pero tú echado eres de tu sepulcro como vástago abominable, como vestido de muertos pasados a espada, que descendieron al fondo de la sepultura; como cuerpo muerto hollado. 20 No serás contado con ellos en la sepultura; porque tú destruiste tu tierra, mataste a tu pueblo. No será nombrada para siempre la descendencia de los malignos. 21 Preparad sus hijos para el matadero, por la maldad de sus padres; no se levanten, ni posean la tierra, ni llenen de ciudades la faz del mundo.
22 Porque yo me levantaré contra ellos, dice Jehová de los ejércitos, y raeré de Babilonia el nombre y el remanente, hijo y nieto, dice Jehová. 23 Y la convertiré en posesión de erizos, y en lagunas de agua; y la barreré con escobas de destrucción, dice Jehová de los ejércitos.
Asiria será destruida
24 Jehová de los ejércitos juró diciendo: Ciertamente se hará de la manera que lo he pensado, y será confirmado como lo he determinado; 25 que quebrantaré al asirio(C) en mi tierra, y en mis montes lo hollaré; y su yugo será apartado de ellos, y su carga será quitada de su hombro. 26 Este es el consejo que está acordado sobre toda la tierra, y esta, la mano extendida sobre todas las naciones. 27 Porque Jehová de los ejércitos lo ha determinado, ¿y quién lo impedirá? Y su mano extendida, ¿quién la hará retroceder?
Profecía sobre Filistea
28 En el año que murió el rey Acaz(D) fue esta profecía: 29 No te alegres tú, Filistea(E) toda, por haberse quebrado la vara del que te hería; porque de la raíz de la culebra saldrá áspid, y su fruto, serpiente voladora. 30 Y los primogénitos de los pobres serán apacentados, y los menesterosos se acostarán confiados; mas yo haré morir de hambre tu raíz, y destruiré lo que de ti quedare. 31 Aúlla, oh puerta; clama, oh ciudad; disuelta estás toda tú, Filistea; porque humo vendrá del norte, no quedará uno solo en sus asambleas. 32 ¿Y qué se responderá a los mensajeros de las naciones? Que Jehová fundó a Sion, y que a ella se acogerán los afligidos de su pueblo.

14 For the Lord will have mercy on Jacob, and will yet choose Israel, and set them in their own land: and the strangers shall be joined with them, and they shall cleave to the house of Jacob.
2 And the people shall take them, and bring them to their place: and the house of Israel shall possess them in the land of the Lord for servants and handmaids: and they shall take them captives, whose captives they were; and they shall rule over their oppressors.
3 And it shall come to pass in the day that the Lord shall give thee rest from thy sorrow, and from thy fear, and from the hard bondage wherein thou wast made to serve,
4 That thou shalt take up this proverb against the king of Babylon, and say, How hath the oppressor ceased! the golden city ceased!
5 The Lord hath broken the staff of the wicked, and the sceptre of the rulers.
6 He who smote the people in wrath with a continual stroke, he that ruled the nations in anger, is persecuted, and none hindereth.
7 The whole earth is at rest, and is quiet: they break forth into singing.
8 Yea, the fir trees rejoice at thee, and the cedars of Lebanon, saying, Since thou art laid down, no feller is come up against us.
9 Hell from beneath is moved for thee to meet thee at thy coming: it stirreth up the dead for thee, even all the chief ones of the earth; it hath raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations.
10 All they shall speak and say unto thee, Art thou also become weak as we? art thou become like unto us?
11 Thy pomp is brought down to the grave, and the noise of thy viols: the worm is spread under thee, and the worms cover thee.
12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.
16 They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;
17 That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners?
18 All the kings of the nations, even all of them, lie in glory, every one in his own house.
19 But thou art cast out of thy grave like an abominable branch, and as the raiment of those that are slain, thrust through with a sword, that go down to the stones of the pit; as a carcase trodden under feet.
20 Thou shalt not be joined with them in burial, because thou hast destroyed thy land, and slain thy people: the seed of evildoers shall never be renowned.
21 Prepare slaughter for his children for the iniquity of their fathers; that they do not rise, nor possess the land, nor fill the face of the world with cities.
22 For I will rise up against them, saith the Lord of hosts, and cut off from Babylon the name, and remnant, and son, and nephew, saith the Lord.
23 I will also make it a possession for the bittern, and pools of water: and I will sweep it with the besom of destruction, saith the Lord of hosts.
24 The Lord of hosts hath sworn, saying, Surely as I have thought, so shall it come to pass; and as I have purposed, so shall it stand:
25 That I will break the Assyrian in my land, and upon my mountains tread him under foot: then shall his yoke depart from off them, and his burden depart from off their shoulders.
26 This is the purpose that is purposed upon the whole earth: and this is the hand that is stretched out upon all the nations.
27 For the Lord of hosts hath purposed, and who shall disannul it? and his hand is stretched out, and who shall turn it back?
28 In the year that king Ahaz died was this burden.
29 Rejoice not thou, whole Palestina, because the rod of him that smote thee is broken: for out of the serpent's root shall come forth a cockatrice, and his fruit shall be a fiery flying serpent.
30 And the firstborn of the poor shall feed, and the needy shall lie down in safety: and I will kill thy root with famine, and he shall slay thy remnant.
31 Howl, O gate; cry, O city; thou, whole Palestina, art dissolved: for there shall come from the north a smoke, and none shall be alone in his appointed times.
32 What shall one then answer the messengers of the nation? That the Lord hath founded Zion, and the poor of his people shall trust in it.

14 The Lord will have compassion(A) on Jacob;
once again he will choose(B) Israel
and will settle them in their own land.(C)
Foreigners(D) will join them
and unite with the descendants of Jacob.
2 Nations will take them
and bring(E) them to their own place.
And Israel will take possession of the nations(F)
and make them male and female servants in the Lord’s land.
They will make captives(G) of their captors
and rule over their oppressors.(H)
3 On the day the Lord gives you relief(I) from your suffering and turmoil(J) and from the harsh labor forced on you,(K) 4 you will take up this taunt(L) against the king of Babylon:(M)
How the oppressor(N) has come to an end!
How his fury[a] has ended!
5 The Lord has broken the rod(O) of the wicked,(P)
the scepter(Q) of the rulers,
6 which in anger struck down peoples(R)
with unceasing blows,
and in fury subdued(S) nations
with relentless aggression.(T)
7 All the lands are at rest and at peace;(U)
they break into singing.(V)
8 Even the junipers(W) and the cedars of Lebanon
gloat over you and say,
“Now that you have been laid low,
no one comes to cut us down.”(X)
9 The realm of the dead(Y) below is all astir
to meet you at your coming;
it rouses the spirits of the departed(Z) to greet you—
all those who were leaders(AA) in the world;
it makes them rise from their thrones—
all those who were kings over the nations.(AB)
10 They will all respond,
they will say to you,
“You also have become weak, as we are;
you have become like us.”(AC)
11 All your pomp has been brought down to the grave,(AD)
along with the noise of your harps;(AE)
maggots are spread out beneath you
and worms(AF) cover you.(AG)
12 How you have fallen(AH) from heaven,
morning star,(AI) son of the dawn!
You have been cast down to the earth,
you who once laid low the nations!(AJ)
13 You said in your heart,
“I will ascend(AK) to the heavens;
I will raise my throne(AL)
above the stars of God;
I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly,(AM)
on the utmost heights(AN) of Mount Zaphon.[b]
14 I will ascend above the tops of the clouds;(AO)
I will make myself like the Most High.”(AP)
15 But you are brought down(AQ) to the realm of the dead,(AR)
to the depths(AS) of the pit.(AT)
16 Those who see you stare at you,
they ponder your fate:(AU)
“Is this the man who shook(AV) the earth
and made kingdoms tremble,
17 the man who made the world a wilderness,(AW)
who overthrew(AX) its cities
and would not let his captives go home?”(AY)
18 All the kings of the nations lie in state,
each in his own tomb.(AZ)
19 But you are cast out(BA) of your tomb
like a rejected branch;
you are covered with the slain,(BB)
with those pierced by the sword,(BC)
those who descend to the stones of the pit.(BD)
Like a corpse trampled underfoot,
20 you will not join them in burial,(BE)
for you have destroyed your land
and killed your people.
Let the offspring(BF) of the wicked(BG)
never be mentioned(BH) again.
21 Prepare a place to slaughter his children(BI)
for the sins of their ancestors;(BJ)
they are not to rise to inherit the land
and cover the earth with their cities.
22 “I will rise up(BK) against them,”
declares the Lord Almighty.
“I will wipe out Babylon’s name(BL) and survivors,
her offspring and descendants,(BM)”
declares the Lord.
23 “I will turn her into a place for owls(BN)
and into swampland;
I will sweep her with the broom of destruction,(BO)”
declares the Lord Almighty.(BP)
24 The Lord Almighty has sworn,(BQ)
“Surely, as I have planned,(BR) so it will be,
and as I have purposed, so it will happen.(BS)
25 I will crush the Assyrian(BT) in my land;
on my mountains I will trample him down.
His yoke(BU) will be taken from my people,
and his burden removed from their shoulders.(BV)”
26 This is the plan(BW) determined for the whole world;
this is the hand(BX) stretched out over all nations.
27 For the Lord Almighty has purposed,(BY) and who can thwart him?
His hand(BZ) is stretched out, and who can turn it back?(CA)
A Prophecy Against the Philistines
28 This prophecy(CB) came in the year(CC) King Ahaz(CD) died:
29 Do not rejoice, all you Philistines,(CE)
that the rod that struck you is broken;
from the root of that snake will spring up a viper,(CF)
its fruit will be a darting, venomous serpent.(CG)
30 The poorest of the poor will find pasture,
and the needy(CH) will lie down in safety.(CI)
But your root I will destroy by famine;(CJ)
it will slay(CK) your survivors.(CL)
31 Wail,(CM) you gate!(CN) Howl, you city!
Melt away, all you Philistines!(CO)
A cloud of smoke comes from the north,(CP)
and there is not a straggler in its ranks.(CQ)
32 What answer shall be given
to the envoys(CR) of that nation?
“The Lord has established Zion,(CS)
and in her his afflicted people will find refuge.(CT)”
