11 The people of Israel and the people of Judah
    have been utterly unfaithful(A) to me,”
declares the Lord.

12 They have lied(B) about the Lord;
    they said, “He will do nothing!
No harm will come to us;(C)
    we will never see sword or famine.(D)
13 The prophets(E) are but wind(F)
    and the word is not in them;
    so let what they say be done to them.”

14 Therefore this is what the Lord God Almighty says:

“Because the people have spoken these words,
    I will make my words in your mouth(G) a fire(H)
    and these people the wood it consumes.(I)
15 People of Israel,” declares the Lord,
    “I am bringing a distant nation(J) against you—
an ancient and enduring nation,
    a people whose language(K) you do not know,
    whose speech you do not understand.
16 Their quivers(L) are like an open grave;
    all of them are mighty warriors.
17 They will devour(M) your harvests and food,
    devour(N) your sons and daughters;
they will devour(O) your flocks and herds,
    devour your vines and fig trees.(P)
With the sword(Q) they will destroy
    the fortified cities(R) in which you trust.(S)

This is what the Lord says:

“Cursed is the one who trusts in man,(A)
    who draws strength from mere flesh
    and whose heart turns away from the Lord.(B)
That person will be like a bush in the wastelands;
    they will not see prosperity when it comes.
They will dwell in the parched places(C) of the desert,
    in a salt(D) land where no one lives.

“But blessed(E) is the one who trusts(F) in the Lord,
    whose confidence is in him.
They will be like a tree planted by the water
    that sends out its roots by the stream.(G)
It does not fear when heat comes;
    its leaves are always green.
It has no worries in a year of drought(H)
    and never fails to bear fruit.”(I)

The heart(J) is deceitful above all things
    and beyond cure.
    Who can understand it?

10 “I the Lord search the heart(K)
    and examine the mind,(L)
to reward(M) each person according to their conduct,
    according to what their deeds deserve.”(N)

17 For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed(A)—a righteousness that is by faith(B) from first to last,[a] just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”[b](C)

God’s Wrath Against Sinful Humanity

18 The wrath of God(D) is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.(E) 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made,(F) so that people are without excuse.(G)

21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.(H) 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools(I)
