A Message About Moab(A)
48 Concerning Moab:(B)
This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says:
“Woe to Nebo,(C) for it will be ruined.
Kiriathaim(D) will be disgraced and captured;
the stronghold[a] will be disgraced and shattered.
2 Moab will be praised(E) no more;
in Heshbon[b](F) people will plot her downfall:
‘Come, let us put an end to that nation.’(G)
You, the people of Madmen,[c] will also be silenced;
the sword will pursue you.
3 Cries of anguish arise from Horonaim,(H)
cries of great havoc and destruction.
4 Moab will be broken;
her little ones will cry out.[d]
5 They go up the hill to Luhith,(I)
weeping bitterly as they go;
on the road down to Horonaim(J)
anguished cries over the destruction are heard.
6 Flee!(K) Run for your lives;
become like a bush[e] in the desert.(L)
7 Since you trust in your deeds and riches,(M)
you too will be taken captive,
and Chemosh(N) will go into exile,(O)
together with his priests and officials.(P)
8 The destroyer(Q) will come against every town,
and not a town will escape.
The valley will be ruined
and the plateau(R) destroyed,
because the Lord has spoken.
9 Put salt(S) on Moab,
for she will be laid waste[f];(T)
her towns will become desolate,
with no one to live in them.
10 “A curse on anyone who is lax in doing the Lord’s work!
A curse on anyone who keeps their sword(U) from bloodshed!(V)
11 “Moab has been at rest(W) from youth,
like wine left on its dregs,(X)
not poured from one jar to another—
she has not gone into exile.
So she tastes as she did,
and her aroma is unchanged.
12 But days are coming,”
declares the Lord,
“when I will send men who pour from pitchers,
and they will pour her out;
they will empty her pitchers
and smash her jars.
13 Then Moab will be ashamed(Y) of Chemosh,(Z)
as Israel was ashamed
when they trusted in Bethel.(AA)
14 “How can you say, ‘We are warriors,(AB)
men valiant in battle’?
15 Moab will be destroyed and her towns invaded;
her finest young men(AC) will go down in the slaughter,(AD)”
declares the King,(AE) whose name is the Lord Almighty.(AF)
16 “The fall of Moab is at hand;(AG)
her calamity will come quickly.
17 Mourn for her, all who live around her,
all who know her fame;(AH)
say, ‘How broken is the mighty scepter,(AI)
how broken the glorious staff!’
18 “Come down from your glory
and sit on the parched ground,(AJ)
you inhabitants of Daughter Dibon,(AK)
for the one who destroys Moab
will come up against you
and ruin your fortified cities.(AL)
19 Stand by the road and watch,
you who live in Aroer.(AM)
Ask the man fleeing and the woman escaping,
ask them, ‘What has happened?’
20 Moab is disgraced, for she is shattered.
Wail(AN) and cry out!
Announce by the Arnon(AO)
that Moab is destroyed.
21 Judgment has come to the plateau(AP)—
to Holon,(AQ) Jahzah(AR) and Mephaath,(AS)
22 to Dibon,(AT) Nebo(AU) and Beth Diblathaim,
23 to Kiriathaim,(AV) Beth Gamul and Beth Meon,(AW)
24 to Kerioth(AX) and Bozrah(AY)—
to all the towns(AZ) of Moab, far and near.
25 Moab’s horn[g](BA) is cut off;
her arm(BB) is broken,”
declares the Lord.
26 “Make her drunk,(BC)
for she has defied(BD) the Lord.
Let Moab wallow in her vomit;(BE)
let her be an object of ridicule.(BF)
27 Was not Israel the object of your ridicule?(BG)
Was she caught among thieves,(BH)
that you shake your head(BI) in scorn(BJ)
whenever you speak of her?
28 Abandon your towns and dwell among the rocks,
you who live in Moab.
Be like a dove(BK) that makes its nest
at the mouth of a cave.(BL)
29 “We have heard of Moab’s pride(BM)—
how great is her arrogance!—
of her insolence, her pride, her conceit
and the haughtiness(BN) of her heart.
30 I know her insolence but it is futile,”
declares the Lord,
“and her boasts(BO) accomplish nothing.
31 Therefore I wail(BP) over Moab,
for all Moab I cry out,
I moan for the people of Kir Hareseth.(BQ)
32 I weep for you, as Jazer(BR) weeps,
you vines of Sibmah.(BS)
Your branches spread as far as the sea[h];
they reached as far as[i] Jazer.
The destroyer has fallen
on your ripened fruit and grapes.
33 Joy and gladness are gone
from the orchards and fields of Moab.
I have stopped the flow of wine(BT) from the presses;
no one treads them with shouts of joy.(BU)
Although there are shouts,
they are not shouts of joy.
34 “The sound of their cry rises
from Heshbon(BV) to Elealeh(BW) and Jahaz,(BX)
from Zoar(BY) as far as Horonaim(BZ) and Eglath Shelishiyah,
for even the waters of Nimrim are dried up.(CA)
35 In Moab I will put an end
to those who make offerings on the high places(CB)
and burn incense(CC) to their gods,”
declares the Lord.
36 “So my heart laments(CD) for Moab like the music of a pipe;
it laments like a pipe for the people of Kir Hareseth.(CE)
The wealth they acquired(CF) is gone.
37 Every head is shaved(CG)
and every beard(CH) cut off;
every hand is slashed
and every waist is covered with sackcloth.(CI)
38 On all the roofs in Moab
and in the public squares(CJ)
there is nothing but mourning,
for I have broken Moab
like a jar(CK) that no one wants,”
declares the Lord.
39 “How shattered(CL) she is! How they wail!
How Moab turns her back in shame!
Moab has become an object of ridicule,(CM)
an object of horror to all those around her.”
40 This is what the Lord says:
“Look! An eagle is swooping(CN) down,
spreading its wings(CO) over Moab.
41 Kerioth[j](CP) will be captured
and the strongholds taken.
In that day the hearts of Moab’s warriors(CQ)
will be like the heart of a woman in labor.(CR)
42 Moab will be destroyed(CS) as a nation(CT)
because she defied(CU) the Lord.
43 Terror(CV) and pit and snare(CW) await you,
you people of Moab,”
declares the Lord.
44 “Whoever flees(CX) from the terror
will fall into a pit,
whoever climbs out of the pit
will be caught in a snare;
for I will bring on Moab
the year(CY) of her punishment,”
declares the Lord.
45 “In the shadow of Heshbon
the fugitives stand helpless,
for a fire has gone out from Heshbon,
a blaze from the midst of Sihon;(CZ)
it burns the foreheads of Moab,
the skulls(DA) of the noisy boasters.
46 Woe to you, Moab!(DB)
The people of Chemosh are destroyed;
your sons are taken into exile
and your daughters into captivity.
47 “Yet I will restore(DC) the fortunes of Moab
in days to come,”
declares the Lord.
Here ends the judgment on Moab.

Ang Mensahe tungkol sa Moab
48 Ito ang sinabi ng Panginoong Makapangyarihan, ang Dios ng Israel, tungkol sa Moab:
“Nakakaawa ang Nebo dahil wawasakin ito. Mapapahiya at bibihagin ang Kiriataim at matitibag ang mga muog nito. 2 Hindi na papupurihan ang Moab; ang mga kaaway sa Heshbon ay nagbabalak na wasakin ang Moab. At ikaw naman Madmen ay sasalakayin ng mga kaaway at magiging mapanglaw. 3 Pakinggan nʼyo ang sigawan sa Horonaim, dahil sa matinding digmaan at kapahamakan. 4 Mawawasak ang Moab at mag-iiyakan ang mga bata. 5 Ang mga mamamayan ng Moab ay mag-iiyakan nang malakas habang paakyat sila sa Luhit at pababa sa Honoraim. Mag-iiyakan sila dahil sa kapahamakan.
6 “Iligtas ninyo ang inyong sarili! Tumakas kayo papuntang ilang. 7 Mga taga-Moab, nagtitiwala kayo sa kakayahan at kayamanan ninyo kaya bibihagin kayo pati ang dios-diosan ninyong si Kemosh at ang mga pari at mga pinuno nito.
8 “Darating ang manlilipol sa bawat bayan at walang bayan na makakaligtas. Mawawasak ang mga bayan sa lambak at talampas. Mangyayari ito dahil sinabi mismo ng Panginoon. 9 May pakpak sana ang Moab para makalipad siya papalayo,[a] dahil wala nang kabuluhan ang mga bayan nito at wala nang maninirahan dito. 10 Sumpain ang taong pabaya sa paggawa ng gawain ng Panginoon laban sa Moab. Sumpain ang taong hindi papatay sa mga taga-Moab. 11 Tahimik ang pamumuhay ng Moab mula pa noon. Hindi pa ito nakaranas ng pagkabihag. Parang alak ito na hindi nagagalaw o naisasalin man sa isang sisidlan. Kaya ang lasa at amoy nitoʼy hindi nagbabago.
12 “Pero darating ang araw na isusugo ko ang mga kaaway para ibuhos ang Moab mula sa kanyang lalagyan at pagkatapos ay babasagin ang lalagyan nito. 13 At ikakahiya ng mga taga-Moab ang dios-diosan nilang si Kemosh, gaya ng nangyari sa Betel nang ikahiya ng mga Israelita ang dios-diosan nila. 14 Ipinagmamalaki ng mga taga-Moab na matatapang ang sundalo nila sa pakikipaglaban. 15 Pero mawawasak ang Moab at ang mga bayan nito. Papatayin ang kanilang matatapang na kabataan. Ako, ang Panginoon na Haring Makapangyarihan, ang nagsasabi nito.
16 “Malapit na ang kapahamakan ng Moab. 17 Umiyak kayo, kayong lahat na kakampi ng Moab![b] Sabihin nʼyo, ‘Wala na ang Moab! Nabali na ang tungkod niya, ang tungkod na sagisag ng kapangyarihan at katanyagan niya.’
18 “Kayong mga taga-Dibon, magpakumbaba kayo at maupo sa lupa dahil ang nagwasak sa Moab ay sasalakay din sa inyo at gigibain ang mga lungsod nʼyo na napapalibutan ng mga pader. 19 Kayong mga nasa Aroer, tumayo kayo sa tabi ng daan at magbantay. Magtanong kayo sa mga nakatakas kung ano ang nangyari. 20 Sasagot sila, ‘Nawasak at napahiya ang Moab. Humiyaw kayo at umiyak. Isigaw nʼyo sa Arnon na nawasak ang Moab.’
21 “Parurusahan din ang mga bayan sa talampas: ang Holon, Jaza, Mefaat, 22 Dibon, Nebo, Bet Diblataim, 23 Kiriataim, Bet Gamul, Bet Meon, 24 Keriot at Bozra. Darating na ang parusa sa lahat ng bayan ng Moab, sa malayo at malapit. 25 Wala nang kapangyarihan ang Moab at mahina na ito ngayon. Ako, ang Panginoon, ang nagsasabi nito.
26 “Lasingin nʼyo ang Moab dahil naghimagsik siya sa akin. Gugulong siya sa sariling suka at magiging katawa-tawa. 27 Kayong mga taga-Moab, hindi baʼt kinutya ninyo ang Israel? Bakit, nahuli ba siyang nagnakaw? Bakit iiling-iling pa kayo sa pagkutya nʼyo sa kanya? 28 Umalis na kayo sa bayan nʼyo at tumira sa mababatong lugar, na parang mga kalapating nagpupugad sa mga bitak ng matatarik at mababatong lugar. 29 Napakayabang ninyo. Narinig ko kung gaano kayo kayabang at kapalalo. 30 Ako, ang Panginoon, nalalaman ko kung gaano kayo kayabang, pero iyan ay walang kabuluhan. 31 Kaya iiyak ako para sa mga taga-Moab at mga taga-Kir Hareset.[c] 32 Iiyak din ako para sa mga taga-Sibna ng higit kaysa sa pag-iyak ko sa mga taga-Jazer. Sibma, para kang halamang ubas na ang mga sanga ay umabot sa kabila ng Dagat na Patay hanggang sa Jazer. Pero ngayon, inubos ng mga maninira ang bunga mo. 33 Wala nang maririnig na kasayahan at katuwaan sa mga bukid at mga ubasan sa lupain ng Moab. Hindi na umaagos ang katas ng ubas sa mga pisaan. Wala ng mga pumipisa ng ubas na sumisigaw sa tuwa. May mga sumisigaw nga, pero hindi na sigaw ng tuwa. 34 Ang iyakan ng mga taga-Heshbon ay naririnig hanggang sa Eleale at Jahaz. Ang iyakan ng mga taga-Zoar ay naririnig hanggang sa Horonaim at sa Eglat Shelishiya. Sapagkat kahit ang batis ng Nimrim ay tuyo na. 35 Patitigilin ko sa Moab ang mga naghahandog sa mga sambahan sa matataas na lugar[d] at nagsusunog ng insenso sa mga dios-diosan nila. Ako, ang Panginoon, ang nagsasabi nito.
36 “Kaya umiiyak ang aking puso para sa Moab at sa mga taga-Kir Hareset, gaya ng malungkot na tugtog ng plauta sa patay. Wala na ang mga kayamanang nakamit nila. 37 Ang bawat isaʼy nagpahayag ng kalungkutan nila sa pamamagitan ng pagpapakalbo, pag-aahit, pagsugat sa mga kamay nila at pagsusuot ng damit na pangluksa. 38 Nag-iiyakan ang mga tao sa mga bahay nila at sa mga plasa, dahil winasak ko ang Moab na parang banga na binasag at wala nang pumapansin. 39 Gayon na lamang ang pagkawasak ng Moab! Pakinggan nʼyo ang iyakan ng mga mamamayan. Nakakahiya ang Moab. Kinukutya at kinamumuhian ito ng mga bansa sa palibot nito.”
40 Sinabi pa ng Panginoon, “Tingnan nʼyo! Ang kaaway ng Moab ay parang agila na lumilipad para dagitin ito. 41 Sasakupin ang mga lungsod[e] at ang mga kampo ng Moab. Sa mga araw na iyon, matatakot ang mga sundalo ng Moab katulad ng isang babaeng malapit nang manganak. 42 Mawawasak ang Moab dahil sa paghihimagsik niya sa Panginoon. 43 Ang sasapitin ng mga taga-Moab ay takot, hukay at bitag.
44 “Ang sinumang tatakas dahil sa takot ay mahuhulog sa hukay. At ang sinumang makakaligtas sa hukay ay mahuhuli sa bitag, dahil talagang parurusahan ko ang Moab sa takdang panahon. Ako, ang Panginoon, ang nagsasabi nito. 45 Ang mga kawawang nakatakas ay nais magtago sa Heshbon. Pero ang Heshbon na pinagharian ni Haring Sihon ay nagliliyab sa apoy at nilamon pati ang mga kabundukan na pinagtataguan ng mga taga-Moab na ang gusto ay digmaan. 46 Hala! Tapos na kayo, kayong mga taga-Moab! Kayong mga sumasamba sa dios-diosang si Kemosh ay bibihagin ang inyong mga anak. 47 Pero darating ang araw na ibabalik ko ang mabuting kalagayan ng Moab. Ako, ang Panginoon, ang nagsasabi nito.” Ito ang mensahe tungkol sa Moab.

A Prophecy Against Moab
48 This is what the Lord of Armies, the God of Israel, says.
Woe to Nebo! It will be destroyed.
Kiriathaim will be disgraced and captured.
The stronghold will be disgraced and broken down.
2 There will no longer be any praise for Moab.
They have plotted evil against her in Heshbon:
“Come, let us destroy that nation!”
You will be silenced, O Madmen.[a]
The sword will pursue you.
3 The sound of a cry from Horonaim,
desolation and great destruction!
4 Moab is destroyed.
Her little ones will cry out.
5 Now they go up the ascent to Luhith,
weeping continually.
And on the descent of Horonaim
they have heard the cry of distress
caused by the destruction.
6 Flee! Save your lives!
Be like a juniper bush[b] in the wilderness.
7 Because you trusted in your works and treasures,
you too will be taken.
Chemosh will go into exile,
together with his priests and officials.
8 The destroyer will come against every city,
and no city will escape.
The valley will also perish,
and the tableland will be destroyed, as the Lord has spoken.
9 Give Moab a blossom, but it will blow away completely.[c]
Her cities will become desolate
with no one to live in them.
10 Cursed is the one who is negligent in doing the Lord’s work.
Cursed is the one who holds back his sword from bloodshed.
11 Moab has been at peace since its youth,
undisturbed, like wine on its dregs,
never poured from one vessel to another.
It has never gone into captivity.
That is why it tastes the same as it always did,
and its aroma is unchanged.
12 Therefore, know this: the days are coming, declares the Lord,
when I will send to Moab people who pour,
and they will pour it out.
They will drain its containers
and smash its jars.
13 Moab will be ashamed of Chemosh,
as the house of Israel was ashamed of Bethel, in which they trusted.
14 How can you say, “We are mighty warriors,
courageous soldiers?”
15 Moab is laid waste,
and they have gone up into its cities.
Its finest young men have gone down to be slaughtered.
The declaration of the King,
whose name is the Lord of Armies:
16 The destruction of Moab is approaching,
and its disaster hurries swiftly.
17 Mourn for it, all you surrounding nations.
All you who know its name say,
“How the mighty scepter is broken,
the glorious staff!”
18 Come down from your glory,
and sit on the parched ground,
you[d] who dwell in Dibon.
Moab’s destroyer has come up against you.
He has destroyed your strongholds.
19 Stand beside the road and watch,
you[e] who dwell in Aroer.
Ask him who flees, ask her who escapes,
“What has happened?”
20 Moab is withered,
for it is broken down.
Wail and cry!
Tell it by the Arnon, that Moab has been destroyed.
21 Judgment has come upon the tableland, on Holon, on Jahzah, on Mepha’ath, 22 on Dibon, on Nebo, on Beth Diblathaim, 23 on Kiriathaim, on Beth Gamul, on Beth Meon, 24 on Kerioth, on Bozrah, and on all the towns of the land of Moab, far and near.
25 The horn of Moab is cut off,
and his arm is broken, declares the Lord.
26 Make him drunk,
because he exalted himself against the Lord.
Moab will wallow in his vomit,
and he will be ridiculed.
27 Was not Israel ridiculed by you?
Was Israel caught among thieves,
so that whenever you speak of him,
you shake your head?
28 You who live in Moab, abandon the cities and dwell in the rocks.
Be like a dove that makes her nest over the mouth of a chasm.
29 We have heard about the pride of Moab.
He is very arrogant.
He is smug, he is conceited,
he is proud, and his heart is haughty.
30 I know his insolence, says the Lord.
It is empty, and so are his deeds.
31 Therefore I will wail for Moab.
I will cry out for all of Moab.
I will mourn for the men of Kir Hareseth.
32 I will weep for you, vine of Sibmah,
more than Jazer.
Your branches passed over the sea.
They reached to the Sea of[f] Jazer.
The destroyer has fallen on your summer fruit
and on your grapes.
33 Gladness and joy have been taken from the fertile field
and from the land of Moab.
I have stopped the flow of wine from the winepresses.
No one will tread them with shouts of joy.
The shouting is not shouting for joy.
34 There is an outcry from Heshbon to Elealeh.
They raise their voices as far as Jahaz,
from Zoar to Horonaim and Eglath Shelishiyah,
and even the waters of Nimrim have dried up.
35 In Moab, declares the Lord,
I will stop the one who presents offerings on the high places
and burns incense to his gods.
36 Therefore, my heart wails like a flute for Moab,
and for the men of Kir Hareseth my heart wails like a flute.
Even the wealth they have acquired is gone.
37 Every head is shaved, and every beard is clipped.
Every hand is cut, and there is sackcloth around their waists.
38 On all the rooftops of Moab
and in its streets there is wailing,
because I have broken Moab like an unwanted jar,
declares the Lord.
39 How broken she is!
How they wail!
How Moab turns her back in shame!
So Moab will be ridiculed
and be a horror to all around.
40 For the Lord says:
Watch, he will fly like an eagle,
and he will spread his wings against Moab.
41 Kerioth is taken,
and the strongholds are seized.
On that day the hearts of Moab’s strong warriors
will be like the heart of a woman in labor.
42 Moab will be destroyed as a nation
because he has defied the Lord.
43 Panic, pit, and peril[g] are before you,
you who live in Moab, declares the Lord.
44 Whoever flees from the panic will fall into the pit.
Whoever gets out of the pit will be trapped in the snare,
for I will bring on Moab the year of their punishment,
says the Lord.
45 Those who fled stand helpless under the shadow of Heshbon,
because a fire has gone out from Heshbon,
and a flame from the midst of Sihon.
It has burned the foreheads of Moab,
and the tops of the heads of those who boast.[h]
46 Woe to you, O Moab!
The people of Chemosh are destroyed,
for your sons are taken away captive,
and your daughters go into exile.
47 Nevertheless, I will reverse the captivity of Moab in days to come,
declares the Lord.
This is the conclusion of the judgment against Moab.

- Jeremiah 48:6 Or like Aroer. The Greek reads like a wild donkey.
