Legacy Standard Bible
7 (A)Then all the [a]commanders of the military forces that were in the field, they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam over the land and that he had appointed him over the men, women, little ones, and those of the (B)poorest of the land who had not been exiled to Babylon. 8 So they came to Gedaliah at Mizpah, along with (C)Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and (D)Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth, and the sons of Ephai the (E)Netophathite, and (F)Jezaniah the son of the (G)Maacathite, both they and their men. 9 Then Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, (H)swore to them and to their men, saying, “(I)Do not be afraid of serving the Chaldeans; stay in the land and serve the king of Babylon, that it may go well with you. 10 Now as for me, behold, I am going to stay at Mizpah to (J)stand for you before the Chaldeans who come to us; but as for you, (K)gather in wine and (L)summer fruit and oil and put them in your storage vessels and stay in your cities that you have seized.”

Gedaliah Governs in Judah
7 The leaders of the Judean military groups in the countryside heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam as governor over the poor people who were left behind in Judah—the men, women, and children who hadn’t been exiled to Babylon. 8 So they went to see Gedaliah at Mizpah. These included: Ishmael son of Nethaniah, Johanan and Jonathan sons of Kareah, Seraiah son of Tanhumeth, the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, Jezaniah son of the Maacathite, and all their men.
9 Gedaliah vowed to them that the Babylonians[a] meant them no harm. “Don’t be afraid to serve them. Live in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and all will go well for you,” he promised. 10 “As for me, I will stay at Mizpah to represent you before the Babylonians who come to meet with us. Settle in the towns you have taken, and live off the land. Harvest the grapes and summer fruits and olives, and store them away.”
