The New Covenant

31 (A)“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make (B)a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, 32 not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when (C)I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, (D)though I was their husband, declares the Lord. 33 (E)For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: (F)I will put my law within them, and I will write it (G)on their hearts. (H)And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ (I)for they shall all know me, (J)from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For (K)I will forgive their iniquity, and (L)I will remember their sin no more.”

The Lord's Concern for His Holy Name

16 The word of the Lord came to me: 17 (A)“Son of man, when the house of Israel lived in their own land, (B)they defiled it by their ways and their deeds. Their ways before me were (C)like the uncleanness of a woman in her menstrual impurity. 18 So (D)I poured out my wrath upon them (E)for the blood that they had shed in the land, for the idols (F)with which they had defiled it. 19 (G)I scattered them among the nations, and they were dispersed through the countries. (H)In accordance with their ways and their deeds I judged them. 20 But when they came to the nations, wherever they came, (I)they profaned my holy name, in that people said of them, ‘These are the people of the Lord, and yet they had to go out of his land.’ 21 But I had concern (J)for my holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the nations to which they came.

I Will Put My Spirit Within You

22 “Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God: (K)It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for the sake of my holy name, (L)which you have profaned among the nations to which you came. 23 (M)And I will vindicate the holiness of my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, and which you have profaned among them. (N)And the nations will know that I am the Lord, declares the Lord God, when through you I vindicate my holiness before their eyes. 24 (O)I will take you (P)from the nations and gather you from all the countries and (Q)bring you into your own land. 25 (R)I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from (S)all your uncleannesses, and (T)from all your idols (U)I will cleanse you. 26 And I will give you (V)a new heart, and (W)a new spirit I will put within you. (X)And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 (Y)And I will put my Spirit within you, (Z)and cause you to walk in my statutes and (AA)be careful to obey my rules.[a] 28 (AB)You shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers, and (AC)you shall be my people, and I will be your God. 29 And (AD)I will deliver you from all your uncleannesses. And (AE)I will summon the grain and make it abundant and (AF)lay no famine upon you. 30 (AG)I will make the fruit of the tree and the increase of the field abundant, (AH)that you may never again suffer the disgrace of famine among the nations. 31 Then (AI)you will remember your evil ways, and your deeds that were not good, and you will loathe yourselves for your iniquities and your abominations. 32 (AJ)It is not for your sake that I will act, declares the Lord God; let that be known to you. Be ashamed and confounded for your ways, O house of Israel.

33 “Thus says the Lord God: On the day that (AK)I cleanse you from all your iniquities, (AL)I will cause the cities to be inhabited, and the waste places shall be rebuilt. 34 And the land that was desolate shall be tilled, instead of being the desolation that it was in the sight of all who passed by. 35 And they will say, ‘This land that was desolate has become like (AM)the garden of Eden, and the waste and desolate and ruined cities are now fortified and inhabited.’ 36 Then (AN)the nations that are left all around you shall know that I am the Lord; I have rebuilt the ruined places and (AO)replanted that which was desolate. (AP)I am the Lord; I have spoken, and I will do it.

Spiritual Blessings in Christ

(A)Blessed be (B)the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing (C)in the heavenly places, (D)even as he (E)chose us in him (F)before the foundation of the world, that we should be (G)holy and blameless before him. In love (H)he predestined us[a] for (I)adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, (J)according to the purpose of his will, (K)to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in (L)the Beloved. (M)In him we have (N)redemption (O)through his blood, (P)the forgiveness of our trespasses, (Q)according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight (R)making known[b] to us the mystery of his will, (S)according to his purpose, which he (T)set forth in Christ 10 as a plan for (U)the fullness of time, (V)to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.

11 In him we have obtained (W)an inheritance, (X)having been predestined (Y)according to the purpose of him who works all things according to (Z)the counsel of his will, 12 so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be (AA)to the praise of his glory. 13 In him you also, when you heard (AB)the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, (AC)were sealed with the (AD)promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is (AE)the guarantee[c] of our (AF)inheritance until (AG)we acquire (AH)possession of it,[d] (AI)to the praise of his glory.

By Grace Through Faith

(A)And you were (B)dead in the trespasses and sins (C)in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following (D)the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in (E)the sons of disobedience— among whom we all once lived in (F)the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body[a] and the mind, and (G)were by nature (H)children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.[b] But[c] God, being (I)rich in mercy, (J)because of the great love with which he loved us, even (K)when we were dead in our trespasses, (L)made us alive together with Christ—(M)by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and (N)seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable (O)riches of his grace in (P)kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For (Q)by grace you have been saved (R)through faith. And this is (S)not your own doing; (T)it is the gift of God, (U)not a result of works, (V)so that no one may boast.

Israel's Only Savior

43 But now thus says the Lord,
(A)he who created you, O Jacob,
    he who formed you, O Israel:
(B)“Fear not, for I have redeemed you;
    (C)I have called you by name, you are mine.
(D)When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
    and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;
(E)when you walk through fire (F)you shall not be burned,
    and the flame shall not consume you.
For (G)I am the Lord your God,
    the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.
(H)I give Egypt as your ransom,
    Cush and (I)Seba in exchange for you.
Because you are precious in my eyes,
    and honored, and I love you,
I give men in return for you,
    peoples in exchange for your life.
(J)Fear not, for I am with you;
    (K)I will bring your offspring from the east,
    and from the west I will gather you.
I will say to the north, Give up,
    and to the south, Do not withhold;
bring (L)my sons from afar
    and (M)my daughters from the end of the earth,
everyone who is called by my name,
    whom I created for my glory,
    whom I formed and made.”

Bring out (N)the people who are blind, yet have eyes,
    who are deaf, yet have ears!
(O)All the nations gather together,
    and the peoples assemble.
Who among them can declare this,
    and show us the former things?
Let them bring their witnesses to prove them right,
    and let them hear and say, It is true.
10 (P)“You are my witnesses,” declares the Lord,
    “and (Q)my servant whom I have chosen,
that you may know and believe me
    and understand that I am he.
(R)Before me no god was formed,
    nor shall there be any after me.
11 (S)I, I am the Lord,
    and besides me there is no savior.
12 I declared and saved and proclaimed,
    when there was no strange god among you;
    and (T)you are my witnesses,” declares the Lord, “and I am God.
13 Also (U)henceforth I am he;
    there is none who can deliver from my hand;
    I work, and who can turn it back?”

14 Thus says the Lord,
    your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel:
(V)“For your sake I send to Babylon
    and (W)bring them all down as fugitives,
    (X)even the Chaldeans, in the ships in which they rejoice.
15 I am the Lord, your Holy One,
    the Creator of Israel, your King.”

16 Thus says the Lord,
    (Y)who makes a way in the sea,
    a path in the mighty waters,
17 who (Z)brings forth chariot and horse,
    army and warrior;
they lie down, they cannot rise,
    (AA)they are extinguished, (AB)quenched like a wick:
18 (AC)“Remember not the former things,
    nor consider the things of old.
19 (AD)Behold, I am doing a new thing;
    now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?
(AE)I will make a way in the wilderness
    (AF)and rivers in the desert.
20 The wild beasts will honor me,
    (AG)the jackals and the ostriches,
(AH)for I give water in the wilderness,
    rivers in the desert,
to give drink to my chosen people,
21     the people whom I formed for myself
(AI)that they might declare my praise.

22 “Yet you did not call upon me, O Jacob;
    but (AJ)you have been weary of me, O Israel!
23 (AK)You have not brought me your sheep for burnt offerings,
    or honored me with your sacrifices.
I have not burdened you with offerings,
    (AL)or wearied you with frankincense.
24 You have not bought me sweet cane with money,
    or satisfied me with the fat of your sacrifices.
But you have burdened me with your sins;
    you have wearied me with your iniquities.

25 “I, I am he
    (AM)who blots out (AN)your transgressions for my own sake,
    and I will not remember your sins.
26 Put me in remembrance; (AO)let us argue together;
    set forth your case, that you may be proved right.
27 (AP)Your first father sinned,
    and (AQ)your mediators transgressed against me.
28 Therefore (AR)I will profane the princes of the sanctuary,
    and (AS)deliver Jacob to utter destruction
    and Israel to reviling.

Israel the Lord's Chosen

44 “But now hear, (A)O Jacob my servant,
    Israel whom I have chosen!
Thus says the Lord who made you,
    (B)who formed you from the womb and will help you:
(C)Fear not, O Jacob my servant,
    (D)Jeshurun whom I have chosen.
(E)For I will pour water on the thirsty land,
    and streams on the dry ground;
I will pour my Spirit upon your offspring,
    and my blessing on your descendants.
They shall spring up among the grass
    (F)like willows by flowing streams.
(G)This one will say, ‘I am the Lord's,’
    another will call on the name of Jacob,
and another will write on his hand, ‘The Lord's,’
    and name himself by the name of Israel.”

The Lord Redeems Israel

21 Remember these things, O Jacob,
    and Israel, for you are (A)my servant;
I formed you; you are my servant;
    (B)O Israel, you will not be forgotten by me.
22 (C)I have blotted out your transgressions like a cloud
    and your sins like mist;
return to me, for I have redeemed you.

23 (D)Sing, O heavens, for the Lord has done it;
    shout, O (E)depths of the earth;
break forth into singing, O mountains,
    O forest, and every tree in it!
For the Lord has redeemed Jacob,
    (F)and will be glorified[a] in Israel.

24 Thus says the Lord, (G)your Redeemer,
    (H)who formed you from the womb:
(I)“I am the Lord, who made all things,
    (J)who alone stretched out the heavens,
    who spread out the earth by myself,
25 who frustrates the signs of liars
    and makes fools of diviners,
(K)who turns wise men back
    and makes their knowledge foolish,
26 (L)who confirms the word of his servant
    and fulfills the counsel of his messengers,
who says of Jerusalem, ‘She shall be inhabited,’
    (M)and of the cities of Judah, ‘They shall be built,
    and I will raise up their ruins’;
27 (N)who says to the deep, ‘Be dry;
    I will dry up your rivers’;
28 who says of (O)Cyrus, ‘He is (P)my shepherd,

saying of Jerusalem, ‘She shall be built,’
    (Q)and of the temple, ‘Your foundation shall be laid.’”

The High Priestly Prayer

17 When Jesus had spoken these words, (A)he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, (B)the hour has come; (C)glorify your Son that the Son may (D)glorify you, since (E)you have given him authority over all flesh, (F)to give eternal life to all (G)whom you have given him.

Now they know that everything (D)that you have given me is from you. For I have given them (E)the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that (F)I came from you; and (G)they have believed that you sent me. I am praying for them. (H)I am not praying for the world but for those (I)whom you have given me, for (J)they are yours. 10 (K)All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and (L)I am glorified in them.

35 Jesus said to them, (A)“I am the bread of life; (B)whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. 36 But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. 37 (C)All that (D)the Father gives me will come to me, and (E)whoever comes to me I will never cast out. 38 For (F)I have come down from heaven, not to do (G)my own will but (H)the will of him (I)who sent me. 39 And (J)this is the will of him who sent me, (K)that I should lose nothing of (L)all that he has given me, but (M)raise it up on the last day. 40 For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who (N)looks on the Son and (O)believes in him (P)should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”

41 So the Jews grumbled about him, because he said, (Q)“I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They said, (R)“Is not this Jesus, (S)the son of Joseph, whose father and mother (T)we know? How does he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” 43 Jesus answered them, “Do not grumble among yourselves. 44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me (U)draws him. And (V)I will raise him up on the last day.

The Words of Eternal Life

60 (A)When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?” 61 But Jesus, (B)knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Do you take offense at this? 62 Then what if you were to see (C)the Son of Man (D)ascending to (E)where he was before? 63 (F)It is the Spirit who gives life; (G)the flesh is no help at all. (H)The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 64 But (I)there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus (J)knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and (K)who it was who would betray him.) 65 And he said, “This is why I told you (L)that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.”

66 (M)After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him.

The Truth Will Set You Free

31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, (B)“If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will (C)know the truth, and the truth (D)will set you free.” 33 They answered him, (E)“We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?”

34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, (F)everyone who practices sin is a slave[a] to sin. 35 (G)The slave does not remain in the house forever; (H)the son remains forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet (I)you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you. 38 (J)I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard (K)from your father.”
