Now these are the words which Yahweh spoke concerning Israel and concerning Judah:

“For thus says Yahweh,

‘We have heard a sound of (A)trembling,
Of dread, and there is no peace.
Ask now, and see
If a male can give birth.
Why do I see every man
With his hands on his loins, (B)as a woman in childbirth?
And why have all faces turned pale?
Alas! For that (C)day is great,
There is (D)none like it;
And it is the time of Jacob’s (E)distress,
But he will be (F)saved from it.

‘And it will be in that day,’ declares Yahweh of hosts, ‘that I will (G)break his yoke from off your neck and will tear off your (H)bonds; and strangers will no longer (I)make [a]them their slaves. But they shall be a slave to Yahweh their God and (J)David their king, whom I will raise up for them.

10 (K)Fear not, O Jacob My [b]servant,’ declares Yahweh,
‘And do not be dismayed, O Israel;
For behold, I will save you (L)from afar
And your seed from the land of their captivity.
And Jacob will return and will be (M)quiet and at ease,
And (N)no one will make him tremble.
11 For (O)I am with you,’ declares Yahweh, ‘to save you;
For I will (P)make a complete destruction of all the nations where I have scattered you,
Only I will (Q)not make a complete destruction of you.
But I will (R)chasten you justly
And will by no means leave you unpunished.’

These are the words the Lord spoke concerning Israel and Judah: “This is what the Lord says:

“‘Cries of fear(A) are heard—
    terror, not peace.
Ask and see:
    Can a man bear children?
Then why do I see every strong man
    with his hands on his stomach like a woman in labor,(B)
    every face turned deathly pale?(C)
How awful that day(D) will be!
    No other will be like it.
It will be a time of trouble(E) for Jacob,
    but he will be saved(F) out of it.

“‘In that day,’ declares the Lord Almighty,
    ‘I will break the yoke(G) off their necks
and will tear off their bonds;(H)
    no longer will foreigners enslave them.(I)
Instead, they will serve the Lord their God
    and David(J) their king,(K)
    whom I will raise up for them.

10 “‘So do not be afraid,(L) Jacob my servant;(M)
    do not be dismayed, Israel,’
declares the Lord.
‘I will surely save(N) you out of a distant place,
    your descendants from the land of their exile.
Jacob will again have peace and security,(O)
    and no one will make him afraid.(P)
11 I am with you(Q) and will save you,’
    declares the Lord.
‘Though I completely destroy all the nations
    among which I scatter you,
    I will not completely destroy(R) you.
I will discipline(S) you but only in due measure;
    I will not let you go entirely unpunished.’(T)
