Now these are the words which Yahweh spoke concerning Israel and concerning Judah:

“For thus says Yahweh,

‘We have heard a sound of (A)trembling,
Of dread, and there is no peace.
Ask now, and see
If a male can give birth.
Why do I see every man
With his hands on his loins, (B)as a woman in childbirth?
And why have all faces turned pale?
Alas! For that (C)day is great,
There is (D)none like it;
And it is the time of Jacob’s (E)distress,
But he will be (F)saved from it.

‘And it will be in that day,’ declares Yahweh of hosts, ‘that I will (G)break his yoke from off your neck and will tear off your (H)bonds; and strangers will no longer (I)make [a]them their slaves. But they shall be a slave to Yahweh their God and (J)David their king, whom I will raise up for them.

10 (K)Fear not, O Jacob My [b]servant,’ declares Yahweh,
‘And do not be dismayed, O Israel;
For behold, I will save you (L)from afar
And your seed from the land of their captivity.
And Jacob will return and will be (M)quiet and at ease,
And (N)no one will make him tremble.
11 For (O)I am with you,’ declares Yahweh, ‘to save you;
For I will (P)make a complete destruction of all the nations where I have scattered you,
Only I will (Q)not make a complete destruction of you.
But I will (R)chasten you justly
And will by no means leave you unpunished.’

These are words the Lord spoke concerning Israel and Judah. This is what the Lord says.

“We have heard cries of fear,
of terror, and not of peace.”
Ask and see.
Can a man give birth to a child?
Why then do I see every strong man
    with his hands on his belly like a woman in labor?
Why has every face turned pale?
That day is so terrible that there is none like it!
It will be a time of trouble for Jacob,
but he will be saved out of it.

In that day, declares the Lord of Armies,
I will break the yoke off your neck.
I will tear away your bonds.
Strangers will no longer enslave Israel,
but they will serve the Lord their God
and David their king, whom I will raise up for them.
10 Therefore do not be afraid, my servant Jacob, declares the Lord.
Do not be terrified, Israel,
because I will certainly save you from a faraway place.
I will save your descendants from the land where they are captive.
Jacob will return.
He will enjoy quiet and be at ease,
and no one will make him afraid.
11 I am with you to save you, declares the Lord.
I will completely destroy all the nations
    among which I have scattered you,
but I will not completely destroy you.
I will discipline you with justice,[a]
yet I will not regard you as entirely innocent.
