Chapter 25[a]
Seventy Years of Captivity.[b] 1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah, in the fourth year of King Jehoiakim of Judah, the son of Josiah, which was the first year of King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. 2 The prophet Jeremiah thus spoke as follows to all the people of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem:
3 For twenty-three years—from the thirteenth year of King Josiah of Judah, the son of Amon, until this very day—the word of the Lord has come to me, and I have spoken to you unceasingly, but you have not listened. 4 And though the Lord continued to send all his servants the prophets to you again and again, you refused to listen or to pay any heed to their message when they warned, 5 “If you turn back, each of you, from your evil ways and your wicked deeds, says the Lord, you can remain in the land that I have given to you and to your fathers forever. 6 If you do not follow other gods to serve and worship them, and you do not provoke me with what your hands have made, then I will not harm you. 7 But you have not listened to me, says the Lord, and thus you have provoked me to anger with your handiwork to your own harm.”
8 Therefore, thus says the Lord of hosts: Because you have not listened to my words, 9 I intend to summon all the tribes of the north, says the Lord, as well as my servant Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, and I will bring them against this land and its inhabitants and against all the surrounding nations. I will totally destroy them and make them an object of horror and scorn and everlasting disgrace. 10 No longer will there emerge from them the sounds of rejoicing and gladness, the voices of bride and bridegroom, the sound of the millstones and the light of the lamp. 11 This entire country will become a wasteland of desolation, and these nations will be enslaved to the king of Babylon for seventy years.
12 However, at the end of those seventy years, says the Lord, I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation, the land of the Chaldeans, for their guilt, and I will turn it into a desolate wasteland. 13 [c]I will inflict upon that land all the scourges that I threatened against it, everything written in this book and prophesied by Jeremiah against all the nations. 14 Mighty nations and powerful kings will reduce them to a life of slavery, and thus I will requite them as their deeds and their handiwork deserve.
15 The Cup of Wrath on the Nations. For these are the words that the Lord, the God of Israel, proclaimed to me, “Take this cup of the wine of wrath from my hand and command all the nations to whom I send you to drink from it. 16 After they drink, they will stagger and become mad because of the sword that I am inflicting upon them.”
17 Therefore, I took the cup from the hand of the Lord and ordered all the nations to whom the Lord had sent me to drink from it: 18 Jerusalem and the towns of Judah, its kings and officials, to transform them into a desolate ruin and a desert, an object of ridicule and cursing, as they are today; 19 Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, his servants, his officials, and all his people, 20 with the various groupings of people: all the kings of the land of Uz; all the kings of the land of the Philistines—Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod; 21 Edom, Moab, and the Ammonites; 22 all the kings of Tyre, all the kings of Sidon, and all the kings of the coastland across the sea; 23 Dedan, Tema, Buz, and all who have shaven temples; 24 all the kings of Arabia and all the kings of the mixed peoples that dwell in the desert; 25 all the kings of Zimri, all the kings of Elam, and all the kings of Media; 26 all the kings of the north, both close neighbors and those who are distant from each other—in other words, all the kingdoms on the face of the earth. And, last of all, the king of Sheshach[d] shall drink.
27 Then say to them: Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Drink! Get drunk and vomit! Fall down, never to rise again, because of the sword that I am sending against you. 28 Should they refuse to accept the cup from your hand and drink, then you are to say to them: Thus says the Lord of hosts: You must drink! 29 Behold, I am beginning to bring disaster on the city that is called by my name. Do you believe that you can possibly avoid punishment? You will not go unpunished, for I am summoning a sword against all the inhabitants of the earth, says the Lord of hosts.
30 Therefore, prophesy against them all these words and proclaim to them:
The Lord roars from on high;
he thunders from his holy dwelling place.
He will roar mightily against his fold;
like those who tread the grapes, she shouts aloud
against all the inhabitants of the earth.
31 The uproar will resound to the ends of the earth,
for the Lord has an indictment against the nations,
he will pass judgment upon all mankind
and put the wicked to the sword.
This the Lord has sworn.
32 Thus says the Lord of hosts:
Behold, disaster is spreading
from nation to nation,
and a mighty storm has been unleashed
from the farthest corners of the earth.
33 Those whom the Lord has slain on that day will be scattered from one end of the earth to the other. No one will mourn for them. Nor will they be gathered up for burial. Rather, they will become like dung spread over the surface of the ground.
34 Wail, you shepherds, and weep aloud;
roll in the dust, you leaders of the flock.
The time for you to be slaughtered has arrived;
you will fall and be shattered
like a valuable vase.
35 The shepherds have no place to seek refuge;
the leaders of the flock have no way of escape.
36 Listen to the cry of the shepherds
and the wails from the lords of the flock.
For the Lord has ravaged their pasture,
37 and their peaceful sheepfolds lie in ruins
because of the fierce anger of the Lord.
38 Like a lion he has abandoned his lair,
for their land has become a desolate waste
because of the sword of the oppressor
and the fierce anger of the Lord.

- Jeremiah 25:1 The end of the seventh century B.C. saw the clash of great empires. Assyria and Egypt made way for Babylon. The year 605 B.C. was one of the most important in the history of the ancient East: Nebuchadnezzar defeated Egypt at Carchemish.
- Jeremiah 25:1 An exile is announced that will last for seventy years. The number is not intended as strictly arithmetical but represents a period longer than the average duration of human life.
- Jeremiah 25:13 This passage probably served as a conclusion to the oracles against the nations, which have been removed from their proper place and put at the end of the Book (chs. 46–51).

2 parole que Jérémie prononça devant tout le peuple de Juda et devant tous les habitants de Jérusalem, en disant:
3 Depuis la treizième année de Josias, fils d'Amon, roi de Juda, il y a vingt-trois ans que la parole de l'Éternel m'a été adressée; je vous ai parlé, je vous ai parlé dès le matin, et vous n'avez pas écouté.
4 L'Éternel vous a envoyé tous ses serviteurs, les prophètes, il les a envoyés dès le matin; et vous n'avez pas écouté, vous n'avez pas prêté l'oreille pour écouter.
5 Ils ont dit: Revenez chacun de votre mauvaise voie et de la méchanceté de vos actions, et vous resterez dans le pays que j'ai donné à vous et à vos pères, d'éternité en éternité;
6 n'allez pas après d'autres dieux, pour les servir et pour vous prosterner devant eux, ne m'irritez pas par l'ouvrage de vos mains, et je ne vous ferai aucun mal.
7 Mais vous ne m'avez pas écouté, dit l'Éternel, afin de m'irriter par l'ouvrage de vos mains, pour votre malheur.
8 C'est pourquoi ainsi parle l'Éternel des armées: Parce que vous n'avez point écouté mes paroles,
9 j'enverrai chercher tous les peuples du septentrion, dit l'Éternel, et j'enverrai auprès de Nebucadnetsar, roi de Babylone, mon serviteur; je le ferai venir contre ce pays et contre ses habitants, et contre toutes ces nations à l'entour, afin de les dévouer par interdit, et d'en faire un objet de désolation et de moquerie, des ruines éternelles.
10 Je ferai cesser parmi eux les cris de réjouissance et les cris d'allégresse, les chants du fiancé et les chants de la fiancée, le bruit de la meule et la lumière de la lampe.
11 Tout ce pays deviendra une ruine, un désert, et ces nations seront asservies au roi de Babylone pendant soixante-dix ans.
12 Mais lorsque ces soixante-dix ans seront accomplis, je châtierai le roi de Babylone et cette nation, dit l'Éternel, à cause de leurs iniquités; je punirai le pays des Chaldéens, et j'en ferai des ruines éternelles.
13 Je ferai venir sur ce pays toutes les choses que j'ai annoncées sur lui, tout ce qui est écrit dans ce livre, ce que Jérémie a prophétisé sur toutes les nations.
14 Car des nations puissantes et de grands rois les asserviront, eux aussi, et je leur rendrai selon leurs oeuvres et selon l'ouvrage de leurs mains.
15 Car ainsi m'a parlé l'Éternel, le Dieu d'Israël: Prends de ma main cette coupe remplie du vin de ma colère, Et fais-la boire à toutes les nations Vers lesquelles je t'enverrai.
16 Ils boiront, et ils chancelleront et seront comme fous, A la vue du glaive que j'enverrai au milieu d'eux.
17 Et je pris la coupe de la main de l'Éternel, Et je la fis boire à toutes les nations Vers lesquelles l'Éternel m'envoyait:
18 A Jérusalem et aux villes de Juda, A ses rois et à ses chefs, Pour en faire une ruine, Un objet de désolation, de moquerie et de malédiction, Comme cela se voit aujourd'hui;
19 A Pharaon, roi d'Égypte, A ses serviteurs, à ses chefs, et à tout son peuple;
20 A toute l'Arabie, à tous les rois du pays d'Uts, A tous les rois du pays des Philistins, A Askalon, à Gaza, à Ékron, et à ce qui reste d'Asdod;
21 A Édom, A Moab, et aux enfants d'Ammon;
22 A tous les rois de Tyr, à tous les rois de Sidon, Et aux rois des îles qui sont au delà de la mer;
23 A Dedan, à Théma, à Buz, Et à tous ceux qui se rasent les coins de la barbe;
24 A tous les rois d'Arabie, Et à tous les rois des Arabes qui habitent dans le désert;
25 A tous les rois de Zimri, A tous les rois d'Élam, Et à tous les rois de Médie;
26 A tous les rois du septentrion, Proches ou éloignés, Aux uns et aux autres, Et à tous les royaumes du monde Qui sont sur la face de la terre. Et le roi de Schéschac boira après eux.
27 Tu leur diras: Ainsi parle l'Éternel des armées, le Dieu d'Israël: Buvez, enivrez-vous, et vomissez, Et tombez sans vous relever, A la vue du glaive que j'enverrai au milieu de vous!
28 Et s'ils refusent de prendre de ta main la coupe pour boire, Dis-leur: Ainsi parle l'Éternel des armées: Vous boirez!
29 Car voici, dans la ville sur laquelle mon nom est invoqué Je commence à faire du mal; Et vous, vous resteriez impunis! Vous ne resterez pas impunis; Car j'appellerai le glaive sur tous les habitants de la terre, Dit l'Éternel des armées.
30 Et toi, tu leur prophétiseras toutes ces choses, Et tu leur diras: L'Éternel rugira d'en haut; De sa demeure sainte il fera retentir sa voix; Il rugira contre le lieu de sa résidence; Il poussera des cris, comme ceux qui foulent au pressoir, Contre tous les habitants de la terre.
31 Le bruit parvient jusqu'à l'extrémité de la terre; Car l'Éternel est en dispute avec les nations, Il entre en jugement contre toute chair; Il livre les méchants au glaive, dit l'Éternel.
32 Ainsi parle l'Éternel des armées: Voici, la calamité va de nation en nation, Et une grande tempête s'élève des extrémités de la terre.
33 Ceux que tuera l'Éternel en ce jour seront étendus D'un bout à l'autre de la terre; Ils ne seront ni pleurés, ni recueillis, ni enterrés, Ils seront comme du fumier sur la terre.
34 Gémissez, pasteurs, et criez! Roulez-vous dans la cendre, conducteurs de troupeaux! Car les jours sont venus où vous allez être égorgés. Je vous briserai, et vous tomberez comme un vase de prix.
35 Plus de refuge pour les pasteurs! Plus de salut pour les conducteurs de troupeaux!
36 On entend les cris des pasteurs, Les gémissements des conducteurs de troupeaux; Car l'Éternel ravage leur pâturage.
37 Les habitations paisibles sont détruites Par la colère ardente de l'Éternel.
38 Il a abandonné sa demeure comme un lionceau sa tanière; Car leur pays est réduit en désert Par la fureur du destructeur Et par son ardente colère.

25 The word came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah in the fourth year of Jehoiakim(A) son of Josiah king of Judah, which was the first year of Nebuchadnezzar(B) king of Babylon. 2 So Jeremiah the prophet said to all the people of Judah(C) and to all those living in Jerusalem: 3 For twenty-three years—from the thirteenth year of Josiah(D) son of Amon king of Judah until this very day—the word of the Lord has come to me and I have spoken to you again and again,(E) but you have not listened.(F)
4 And though the Lord has sent all his servants the prophets(G) to you again and again, you have not listened or paid any attention.(H) 5 They said, “Turn(I) now, each of you, from your evil ways and your evil practices, and you can stay in the land(J) the Lord gave to you and your ancestors for ever and ever. 6 Do not follow other gods(K) to serve and worship them; do not arouse my anger with what your hands have made. Then I will not harm you.”
7 “But you did not listen to me,” declares the Lord, “and you have aroused(L) my anger with what your hands have made,(M) and you have brought harm(N) to yourselves.”
8 Therefore the Lord Almighty says this: “Because you have not listened to my words, 9 I will summon(O) all the peoples of the north(P) and my servant(Q) Nebuchadnezzar(R) king of Babylon,” declares the Lord, “and I will bring them against this land and its inhabitants and against all the surrounding nations. I will completely destroy[a](S) them and make them an object of horror and scorn,(T) and an everlasting ruin.(U) 10 I will banish from them the sounds(V) of joy and gladness, the voices of bride and bridegroom,(W) the sound of millstones(X) and the light of the lamp.(Y) 11 This whole country will become a desolate wasteland,(Z) and these nations will serve(AA) the king of Babylon seventy years.(AB)
12 “But when the seventy years(AC) are fulfilled, I will punish the king of Babylon(AD) and his nation, the land of the Babylonians,[b] for their guilt,” declares the Lord, “and will make it desolate(AE) forever. 13 I will bring on that land all the things I have spoken against it, all that are written(AF) in this book and prophesied by Jeremiah against all the nations. 14 They themselves will be enslaved(AG) by many nations(AH) and great kings; I will repay(AI) them according to their deeds and the work of their hands.”

15 This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, said to me: “Take from my hand this cup(AJ) filled with the wine of my wrath and make all the nations to whom I send(AK) you drink it. 16 When they drink(AL) it, they will stagger(AM) and go mad(AN) because of the sword(AO) I will send among them.”
17 So I took the cup from the Lord’s hand and made all the nations to whom he sent(AP) me drink it: 18 Jerusalem(AQ) and the towns of Judah, its kings and officials, to make them a ruin(AR) and an object of horror and scorn,(AS) a curse[c](AT)—as they are today;(AU) 19 Pharaoh king(AV) of Egypt,(AW) his attendants, his officials and all his people, 20 and all the foreign people there; all the kings of Uz;(AX) all the kings of the Philistines(AY) (those of Ashkelon,(AZ) Gaza,(BA) Ekron, and the people left at Ashdod); 21 Edom,(BB) Moab(BC) and Ammon;(BD) 22 all the kings of Tyre(BE) and Sidon;(BF) the kings of the coastlands(BG) across the sea; 23 Dedan,(BH) Tema,(BI) Buz(BJ) and all who are in distant places[d];(BK) 24 all the kings of Arabia(BL) and all the kings of the foreign people(BM) who live in the wilderness; 25 all the kings of Zimri,(BN) Elam(BO) and Media;(BP) 26 and all the kings of the north,(BQ) near and far, one after the other—all the kingdoms(BR) on the face of the earth. And after all of them, the king of Sheshak[e](BS) will drink it too.
27 “Then tell them, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Drink, get drunk(BT) and vomit, and fall to rise no more because of the sword(BU) I will send among you.’ 28 But if they refuse to take the cup from your hand and drink(BV), tell them, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty says: You must drink it! 29 See, I am beginning to bring disaster(BW) on the city that bears my Name,(BX) and will you indeed go unpunished?(BY) You will not go unpunished, for I am calling down a sword(BZ) on all(CA) who live on the earth,(CB) declares the Lord Almighty.’
30 “Now prophesy all these words against them and say to them:
“‘The Lord will roar(CC) from on high;
he will thunder(CD) from his holy dwelling(CE)
and roar mightily against his land.
He will shout like those who tread(CF) the grapes,
shout against all who live on the earth.
31 The tumult(CG) will resound to the ends of the earth,
for the Lord will bring charges(CH) against the nations;
he will bring judgment(CI) on all(CJ) mankind
and put the wicked to the sword,(CK)’”
declares the Lord.
32 This is what the Lord Almighty says:
“Look! Disaster(CL) is spreading
from nation to nation;(CM)
a mighty storm(CN) is rising
from the ends of the earth.”(CO)
33 At that time those slain(CP) by the Lord will be everywhere—from one end of the earth to the other. They will not be mourned or gathered(CQ) up or buried,(CR) but will be like dung lying on the ground.
34 Weep and wail, you shepherds;(CS)
roll(CT) in the dust, you leaders of the flock.
For your time to be slaughtered(CU) has come;
you will fall like the best of the rams.[f](CV)
35 The shepherds will have nowhere to flee,
the leaders of the flock no place to escape.(CW)
36 Hear the cry(CX) of the shepherds,(CY)
the wailing of the leaders of the flock,
for the Lord is destroying their pasture.
37 The peaceful meadows will be laid waste
because of the fierce anger of the Lord.
38 Like a lion(CZ) he will leave his lair,
and their land will become desolate(DA)
because of the sword[g] of the oppressor(DB)
and because of the Lord’s fierce anger.(DC)
