Jeremiah 25
The Message
Don’t Follow the God-Fads of the Day
25 This is the Message given to Jeremiah for all the people of Judah. It came in the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah. It was the first year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon.
2 Jeremiah the prophet delivered the Message to all the people of Judah and citizens of Jerusalem:
3 From the thirteenth year of Josiah son of Amon king of Judah right up to the present day—twenty-three years it’s been!—God’s Word has come to me, and from early each morning to late every night I’ve passed it on to you. And you haven’t listened to a word of it!
4-6 Not only that but God also sent a steady stream of prophets to you who were just as persistent as me, and you never listened. They told you, “Turn back—right now, each one of you!—from your evil way of life and bad behavior, and live in the land God gave you and your ancestors, the land he intended to give you forever. Don’t follow the god-fads of the day, taking up and worshiping these no-gods. Don’t make me angry with your god-businesses, making and selling gods—a dangerous business!
7 “You refused to listen to any of this, and now I am really angry. These god-making businesses of yours are your doom.”
8-11 The verdict of God-of-the-Angel-Armies on all this: “Because you have refused to listen to what I’ve said, I’m stepping in. I’m sending for the armies out of the north headed by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, my servant in this, and I’m setting them on this land and people and even the surrounding countries. I’m devoting the whole works to total destruction—a horror to top all the horrors in history. And I’ll banish every sound of joy—singing, laughter, marriage festivities, genial workmen, candlelit suppers. The whole landscape will be one vast wasteland. These countries will be in subjection to the king of Babylon for seventy years.
12-14 “Once the seventy years is up, I’ll punish the king of Babylon and the whole nation of Babylon for their sin. Then they’ll be the wasteland. Everything that I said I’d do to that country, I’ll do—everything that’s written in this book, everything Jeremiah preached against all the godless nations. Many nations and great kings will make slaves of the Babylonians, paying them back for everything they’ve done to others. They won’t get by with anything.” God’s Decree.
God Puts the Human Race on Trial
15-16 This is a Message that the God of Israel gave me: “Take this cup filled with the wine of my wrath that I’m handing to you. Make all the nations where I send you drink it down. They’ll drink it and get drunk, staggering in delirium because of the killing that I’m going to unleash among them.”
17-26 I took the cup from God’s hand and made them drink it, all the nations to which he sent me:
Jerusalem and the towns of Judah, along with their kings and leaders, turning them into a vast wasteland, a horror to look at, a cussword—which, in fact, they now are;
Pharaoh king of Egypt with his attendants and leaders, plus all his people and the melting pot of foreigners collected there;
All the kings of Uz;
All the kings of the Philistines from Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, and what’s left of Ashdod;
Edom, Moab, and the Ammonites;
All the kings of Tyre, Sidon, and the coastlands across the sea;
Dedan, Tema, Buz, and the nomads on the fringe of the desert;
All the kings of Arabia and the various Bedouin sheiks and chieftains wandering about in the desert;
All the kings of Zimri, Elam, and the Medes;
All the kings from the north countries near and far, one by one;
All the kingdoms on planet Earth . . .
And the king of Sheshak (that is, Babylon) will be the last to drink.
27 “Tell them, ‘These are orders from God-of-the-Angel-Armies, the God of Israel: Drink and get drunk and vomit. Fall on your faces and don’t get up again. You’re slated for a massacre.’
28 “If any of them refuse to take the cup from you and drink it, say to them, ‘God-of-the-Angel-Armies has ordered you to drink. So drink!
29 “‘Prepare for the worst! I’m starting off the catastrophe in the city that I claim as my own, so don’t think you are going to get out of it. No, you’re not getting out of anything. It’s the sword and nothing but the sword against everyone everywhere!’” The God-of-the-Angel-Armies’ Decree.
30-31 “Preach it all, Jeremiah. Preach the entire Message to them. Say:
“‘God roars like a lion from high heaven;
thunder rolls out from his holy dwelling—
Ear-splitting bellows against his people,
shouting hurrahs like workers in harvest.
The noise reverberates all over the earth;
everyone everywhere hears it.
God makes his case against the godless nations.
He’s about to put the human race on trial.
For the wicked the verdict is clear-cut:
death by the sword.’” God’s Decree.

32 A Message from God-of-the-Angel-Armies:
“Prepare for the worst! Doomsday!
Disaster is spreading from nation to nation.
A huge storm is about to rage
all across planet Earth.”

33 Laid end to end, those killed in God’s judgment that day will stretch from one end of the earth to the other. No tears will be shed and no burials conducted. The bodies will be left where they fall, like so much horse dung fertilizing the fields.

34-38 Wail, shepherds! Cry out for help!
Grovel in the dirt, you masters of flocks!
Time’s up—you’re slated for the slaughterhouse,
like a choice ram with its throat cut.
There’s no way out for the rulers,
no escape for those shepherds.
Hear that? Rulers crying for help,
shepherds of the flock wailing!
God is about to ravage their fine pastures.
The peaceful sheepfolds will be silent with death,
silenced by God’s deadly anger.
God will come out into the open
like a lion leaping from its cover,
And the country will be torn to pieces,
ripped and ravaged by his anger.

25 (A) Detta ord kom till Jeremia om hela Juda folk i Juda kung Jojakims, Josias sons, fjärde regeringsår, som var Babels kung Nebukadressars första regeringsår[a]. 2 Detta är vad profeten Jeremia talade till hela Juda folk och Jerusalems alla invånare:
3 (B) Ända från Juda kung Josias, Amons sons, trettonde regeringsår och till i dag, i tjugotre år, har Herrens ord kommit till mig. Jag har talat till er gång på gång, men ni har inte velat höra. 4 (C) Herren har sänt er alla sina tjänare profeterna gång på gång, men ni har inte lyssnat eller vänt örat till för att höra. 5 (D) De sade: ”Vänd om, var och en från sin onda väg och sina onda gärningar! Då ska ni få bo kvar i landet som Herren har gett er och era fäder för all framtid. 6 (E) Följ inte andra gudar för att tjäna och tillbe dem, och väck inte min vrede med era händers verk. Då ska jag inte låta någon olycka drabba er.” 7 (F) Men ni har inte lyssnat till mig, säger Herren, utan väckt min vrede med era händers verk till er egen olycka.
8 Därför säger Herren Sebaot så: Eftersom ni inte har lyssnat till mina ord, 9 (G) ska jag kalla på alla folkstammarna i norr, säger Herren, och jag ska skicka efter min tjänare Nebukadressar,[b] Babels kung. Och jag ska låta dem anfalla detta land och dem som bor här och alla hednafolken runt omkring. Jag ska viga dem åt förintelse, och de ska bli till häpnad och åtlöje och evig ödeläggelse. 10 (H) Jag ska bland dem göra slut på jubelrop och glädjerop, rop för brudgum och rop för brud, kvarnens buller och lampans ljus. 11 Hela detta land ska ödeläggas och förstöras, och dessa länder ska tjäna Babels kung i sjuttio år[c].
12 (I) Men när sjuttio år har gått ska jag straffa Babels kung och folket där för deras missgärning, säger Herren, och kaldeernas land ska jag göra till en ödemark för all framtid. 13 Jag ska låta alla de ord som jag talat mot det landet gå i uppfyllelse, allt som är skrivet i denna bok och som Jeremia har profeterat mot alla hednafolk. 14 Också dem ska mäktiga folk och stora kungar lägga under sig, och jag ska ge dem efter deras gärningar och deras händers verk.
Guds dom över folken
15 (J) För så sade Herren, Israels Gud, till mig: ”Ta denna bägare med vredesvin ur min hand och låt alla hednafolk dit jag sänder dig dricka av den. 16 De ska dricka så att de raglar och förlorar förståndet på grund av det svärd som jag ska sända bland dem.”
17 Och jag tog bägaren ur Herrens hand och gav åt alla folk[d] dit Herren sände mig att dricka. 18 Det var Jerusalem med Juda städer, dess kungar och furstar, för att göra dem till en ödemark och till häpnad och åtlöje och till en förbannelse, som nu har skett, 19 (K) sedan farao, Egyptens kung, hans tjänare, hans furstar och allt hans folk 20 (L) och alla blandade stammar där, alla kungar i landet Us och alla kungar i filisteernas land, både Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron och dem som finns kvar i Ashdod, 21 (M) vidare Edom, Moab och ammoniterna och alla kungar i Tyrus, 22 (N) alla kungar i Sidon och kungarna i kustländerna på andra sidan havet, 23 dessutom Dedan, Tema, Bus och alla som har kantklippt hår, 24 alla kungar i Arabien och alla kungar över de blandade stammar som bor i öknen 25 samt alla kungar i Simri, alla kungar i Elam och alla kungar i Medien, 26 (O) och alla kungar i landet i norr – både dem som bor nära och dem som bor långt borta, den ene såväl som den andre – och alla andra riken i världen över jordens yta. Och Sheshaks[e] kung ska dricka efter dem.
27 (P) Du ska säga till dem: Så säger Herren Sebaot, Israels Gud: Drick, så att ni blir druckna och spyr och faller utan att kunna resa er, på grund av det svärd som jag ska sända bland er. 28 Men om de inte vill ta emot bägaren ur din hand och dricka, så säg till dem: Så säger Herren Sebaot: Ni måste dricka! 29 (Q) För se, jag ska börja straffdomen med den stad som är uppkallad efter mitt namn. Skulle då ni bli ostraffade? Nej, ni ska inte bli ostraffade, utan jag ska kalla på ett svärd mot jordens alla invånare, säger Herren Sebaot.
30 (R) Allt detta ska du profetera för dem och säga till dem:
Herren ryter från höjden,
han höjer sin röst
från sin heliga boning.
Han ryter högt över sitt land
och höjer skörderop
som en vintrampare
över jordens alla invånare.
31 (S) Larmet hörs till jordens ände,
för Herren går till rätta
med hednafolken,
han ska döma allt kött.
De ogudaktiga överlämnar han
åt svärdet, säger Herren.
32 Så säger Herren Sebaot:
Se, en ofärd går ut
från folk till folk
och en väldig storm stiger upp
från jordens yttersta ände.
33 (T) De som blir slagna av Herren
på den dagen
ska ligga från jordens ena ände
till den andra.
Man ska inte hålla dödsklagan
efter dem,
inte samla upp och begrava dem,
utan de ska bli gödsel på marken.
34 Jämra er, ni herdar, och klaga!
Vältra er på marken,
ni ledare för hjorden,
för tiden är inne
då ni ska slaktas.
Ni ska skingras
och falla som ett fint kärl.[f]
35 (U) Ingen tillflykt finns för herdarna,
ingen möjlighet att komma undan
för hjordens ledare.
36 Hör herdarna ropa
och ledarna för hjorden jämra sig,
för Herren ödelägger
deras betesmark
37 och de fridfulla ängarna förstörs
på grund av Herrens
brinnande vrede.
38 Likt ett ungt lejon
drar han ut ur sitt snår.
Deras land blir en ödemark
på grund av förtryckarens svärd
och hans brinnande vrede.

25 The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, that was the first year of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon;
2 The which Jeremiah the prophet spake unto all the people of Judah, and to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying,
3 From the thirteenth year of Josiah the son of Amon king of Judah, even unto this day, that is the three and twentieth year, the word of the Lord hath come unto me, and I have spoken unto you, rising early and speaking; but ye have not hearkened.
4 And the Lord hath sent unto you all his servants the prophets, rising early and sending them; but ye have not hearkened, nor inclined your ear to hear.
5 They said, Turn ye again now every one from his evil way, and from the evil of your doings, and dwell in the land that the Lord hath given unto you and to your fathers for ever and ever:
6 And go not after other gods to serve them, and to worship them, and provoke me not to anger with the works of your hands; and I will do you no hurt.
7 Yet ye have not hearkened unto me, saith the Lord; that ye might provoke me to anger with the works of your hands to your own hurt.
8 Therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts; Because ye have not heard my words,

12 And it shall come to pass, when seventy years are accomplished, that I will punish the king of Babylon, and that nation, saith the Lord, for their iniquity, and the land of the Chaldeans, and will make it perpetual desolations.
13 And I will bring upon that land all my words which I have pronounced against it, even all that is written in this book, which Jeremiah hath prophesied against all the nations.
14 For many nations and great kings shall serve themselves of them also: and I will recompense them according to their deeds, and according to the works of their own hands.
15 For thus saith the Lord God of Israel unto me; Take the wine cup of this fury at my hand, and cause all the nations, to whom I send thee, to drink it.
16 And they shall drink, and be moved, and be mad, because of the sword that I will send among them.
17 Then took I the cup at the Lord's hand, and made all the nations to drink, unto whom the Lord had sent me:
18 To wit, Jerusalem, and the cities of Judah, and the kings thereof, and the princes thereof, to make them a desolation, an astonishment, an hissing, and a curse; as it is this day;
19 Pharaoh king of Egypt, and his servants, and his princes, and all his people;
20 And all the mingled people, and all the kings of the land of Uz, and all the kings of the land of the Philistines, and Ashkelon, and Azzah, and Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod,

28 And it shall be, if they refuse to take the cup at thine hand to drink, then shalt thou say unto them, Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Ye shall certainly drink.
29 For, lo, I begin to bring evil on the city which is called by my name, and should ye be utterly unpunished? Ye shall not be unpunished: for I will call for a sword upon all the inhabitants of the earth, saith the Lord of hosts.
30 Therefore prophesy thou against them all these words, and say unto them, The Lord shall roar from on high, and utter his voice from his holy habitation; he shall mightily roar upon his habitation; he shall give a shout, as they that tread the grapes, against all the inhabitants of the earth.
31 A noise shall come even to the ends of the earth; for the Lord hath a controversy with the nations, he will plead with all flesh; he will give them that are wicked to the sword, saith the Lord.
32 Thus saith the Lord of hosts, Behold, evil shall go forth from nation to nation, and a great whirlwind shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth.
33 And the slain of the Lord shall be at that day from one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth: they shall not be lamented, neither gathered, nor buried; they shall be dung upon the ground.
34 Howl, ye shepherds, and cry; and wallow yourselves in the ashes, ye principal of the flock: for the days of your slaughter and of your dispersions are accomplished; and ye shall fall like a pleasant vessel.
35 And the shepherds shall have no way to flee, nor the principal of the flock to escape.
36 A voice of the cry of the shepherds, and an howling of the principal of the flock, shall be heard: for the Lord hath spoiled their pasture.
37 And the peaceable habitations are cut down because of the fierce anger of the Lord.
38 He hath forsaken his covert, as the lion: for their land is desolate because of the fierceness of the oppressor, and because of his fierce anger.
