Chapter 13[a]
Warnings to Judah. 1 The Lord said to me: Go forth and purchase for yourself a loincloth. Wrap it around your loins, but do not dip it in water. 2 I purchased the loincloth as instructed by the Lord and wrapped it around my loins.
3 Then the Lord spoke to me a second time, saying: 4 Take the loincloth that you purchased and are wearing, and go now to the Euphrates and conceal it there in a cleft of the rock. 5 So I went to the Euphrates and hid it as the Lord had commanded me.
6 After a long period of time, the Lord said to me: Go now to the Euphrates and retrieve the loincloth that I instructed you to hide there. 7 And so I returned to the Euphrates and searched for the cleft, and I then retrieved the loincloth from the place where I had hidden it. But the loincloth had now rotted and was good for nothing.
8 Then the word of the Lord came to me: 9 Thus says the Lord: In the same way I will ruin the pride of Judah and the enormous pride of Jerusalem. 10 Because these wicked people refuse to listen to my words and stubbornly follow their own inclinations as they run after other gods to serve them and worship them, they will become like this loincloth, which is good for nothing. 11 For just as a loincloth clings to a man’s loins, so I made the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah cling to me, says the Lord, in the hope that they would become my people, my praise, and my pride. But they refused to listen.
12 The Shattered Wineflask. Therefore, proclaim this message to them: Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Every wineflask should be filled with wine. If they reply, “Do you think we do not know that every wineflask is meant to be filled with wine?” 13 say to them in reply: Thus says the Lord: I will fill all the inhabitants of this land with wine until they are drunk—the kings who sit on David’s throne, the priests, the prophets, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 14 Then I will smash them one against the other, parents and children together, says the Lord. I will show no pity, I will not spare or show compassion, when I destroy them.
A Vision of Exile
15 Listen carefully and suppress your pride,
for it is the Lord who speaks.
16 Give glory to the Lord, your God,
before the darkness descends,
before your feet stumble
on the mountains at twilight,
before the light you hope for
will gradually turn to gloom
and then into thick darkness.
17 If your pride does not allow you to listen,
I will weep in secret for you.
My eyes will be filled with tears
because the Lord’s flock is being led into captivity.
18 [b]Say to the king and the queen mother,
“Descend from your thrones,
since your glorious crowns
have fallen from your heads.”
19 The cities in the Negeb are besieged,
and no one will be able to offer them relief.
All Judah has been taken into exile;
every inhabitant has been led away.
Jerusalem’s Shame
20 Lift up your eyes and behold
those who are coming from the north.
Where is the flock that was entrusted to you,
the sheep that were your pride?
21 What will you say when they appoint as your rulers
those whom you chose as your allies?
Will not pangs seize you
like those of a woman in labor?
22 And if you should ask yourself,
“Why has all this happened to me?”
it is because of your many grievous sins
that your skirts have been stripped away
and you have been violated.
23 Can an Ethiopian change the color of his skin
or a leopard change its spots?
Neither are you able to do good
when you are schooled in evil.
24 I will scatter you like chaff
that is driven by the desert wind.
25 This is your lot, says the Lord,
the portion I have measured out to you,
because you have forgotten me
and placed your trust in false gods.
26 I myself will tear off your skirts
so that your shame will be seen.
27 Your adulteries, your cries of lustful pleasure,
your shameless acts of prostitution:
all these abominable deeds of yours
I have observed on the hills of the countryside.
Woe to you, Jerusalem!
How long will it be
before you are made clean?

- Jeremiah 13:1 Judah, which should be a source of renown and glory for the Lord (v. 11), has become intoxicated by its title of chosen people. The oracles collected here by the editor denounce this pride; the prophecies are filled with threats to be carried out in the very near future. The oracles certainly preceded the first deportation in 598 B.C.
- Jeremiah 13:18 The king is certainly Jehoiachin, son of Jehoiakim; he was a young man of 18 and would ascend the throne only to be led away a prisoner (see 2 Ki 24:8).

13 Thus the Lord said to me: “Go and get yourself a linen sash, and put it [a]around your waist, but do not put it in water.” 2 So I got a [b]sash according to the word of the Lord, and put it around my waist.
3 And the word of the Lord came to me the second time, saying, 4 “Take the [c]sash that you acquired, which is [d]around your waist, and arise, go to the [e]Euphrates, and hide it there in a hole in the rock.” 5 So I went and hid it by the Euphrates, as the Lord commanded me.
6 Now it came to pass after many days that the Lord said to me, “Arise, go to the Euphrates, and take from there the sash which I commanded you to hide there.” 7 Then I went to the Euphrates and dug, and I took the [f]sash from the place where I had hidden it; and there was the sash, ruined. It was profitable for nothing.
8 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 9 “Thus says the Lord: ‘In this manner (A)I will ruin the pride of Judah and the great (B)pride of Jerusalem. 10 This evil people, who (C)refuse to hear My words, who (D)follow[g] the dictates of their hearts, and walk after other gods to serve them and worship them, shall be just like this sash which is profitable for nothing. 11 For as the sash clings to the waist of a man, so I have caused the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah to cling to Me,’ says the Lord, ‘that (E)they may become My people, (F)for renown, for praise, and for (G)glory; but they would (H)not hear.’

12 “Therefore you shall speak to them this word: ‘Thus says the Lord God of Israel: “Every bottle shall be filled with wine.” ’
“And they will say to you, ‘Do we not certainly know that every bottle will be filled with wine?’
13 “Then you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord: “Behold, I will fill all the inhabitants of this land—even the kings who sit on David’s throne, the priests, the prophets, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem—(I)with drunkenness! 14 And (J)I will dash them [h]one against another, even the fathers and the sons together,” says the Lord. “I will not pity nor spare nor have mercy, but will destroy them.” ’ ”
Pride Precedes Captivity
15 Hear and give ear:
Do not be proud,
For the Lord has spoken.
16 (K)Give glory to the Lord your God
Before He causes (L)darkness,
And before your feet stumble
On the dark mountains,
And while you are (M)looking for light,
He turns it into (N)the shadow of death
And makes it dense darkness.
17 But if you will not hear it,
My soul will (O)weep in secret for your pride;
My eyes will weep bitterly
And run down with tears,
Because the Lord’s flock has been taken captive.
18 Say to (P)the king and to the queen mother,
“Humble yourselves;
Sit down,
For your rule shall collapse, the crown of your glory.”
19 The cities of the South shall be shut up,
And no one shall open them;
Judah shall be carried away captive, all of it;
It shall be wholly carried away captive.
20 Lift up your eyes and see
Those who come from the (Q)north.
Where is the flock that was given to you,
Your beautiful sheep?
21 What will you say when He punishes you?
For you have taught them
To be chieftains, to be head over you.
Will not (R)pangs seize you,
Like a woman in [i]labor?
22 And if you say in your heart,
(S)“Why have these things come upon me?”
For the greatness of your iniquity
(T)Your skirts have been uncovered,
Your heels [j]made bare.
23 Can the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard its spots?
Then may you also do good who are accustomed to do evil.
24 “Therefore I will (U)scatter them (V)like stubble
That passes away by the wind of the wilderness.
25 (W)This is your lot,
The portion of your measures from Me,” says the Lord,
“Because you have forgotten Me
And trusted in (X)falsehood.
26 Therefore (Y)I will uncover your skirts over your face,
That your shame may appear.
27 I have seen your adulteries
And your lustful (Z)neighings,
The lewdness of your harlotry,
Your abominations (AA)on the hills in the fields.
Woe to you, O Jerusalem!
Will you still not be made clean?”

ਲੰਗੋਟੀ ਦਾ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨ
13 ਇਹੀ ਸੀ ਜੋ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਖਿਆ ਸੀ, “ਯਿਰਮਿਯਾਹ ਜਾਹ ਜਾਕੇ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਦੀ ਲੰਗੋਟੀ ਖਰੀਦ। ਫ਼ੇਰ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਲੱਕ ਦੁਆਲੇ ਲਪੇਟ। ਲੰਗੋਟੀ ਨੂੰ ਭਿੱਜਣ ਨਾ ਦੇਵੀਂ।”
2 ਇਸ ਲਈ ਮੈਂ ਕਪੜੇ ਦੀ ਲੰਗੋਟੀ ਖਰੀਦੀ ਜਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਖਰੀਦਣ ਲਈ ਆਖਿਆ ਸੀ। ਅਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਲੱਕ ਦੁਆਲੇ ਲਪੇਟ ਲਿਆ। 3 ਫ਼ੇਰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਦਾ ਸੰਦੇਸ਼ ਦੋਬਾਰਾ ਮਿਲਿਆ। 4 ਸੰਦੇਸ਼ ਇਹ ਸੀ: “ਯਿਰਮਿਯਾਹ ਉਹ ਲੰਗੋਟੀ ਲੈ ਜਾ ਜੋ ਤੂੰ ਖਰੀਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਪਹਿਨੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਫਰਾਤ ਵੱਲ ਜਾਹ। ਓੱਥੇ ਚੱਟਾਨਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਤ੍ਰੇੜਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੰਗੋਟੀ ਨੂੰ ਛੁਪਾ ਦੇਵੀਂ।”
5 ਇਸ ਲਈ ਮੈਂ ਫਰਾਤ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਖਿਆ ਸੀ ਮੈਂ ਲੰਗੋਟੀ ਛੁਪਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ। 6 ਕਈ ਦਿਨਾਂ ਮਗਰੋਂ, ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਹੁਣ ਯਿਰਮਿਯਾਹ, ਫਰਾਤ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਹ। ਉਸ ਲੰਗੋਟੀ ਨੂੰ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਆ ਜਿਹੜੀ ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਓੱਥੇ ਛੁਪਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਆਖਿਆ ਸੀ।”
7 ਇਸ ਲਈ ਮੈਂ ਫਰਾਤ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਪੁੱਟ ਕੇ ਲੰਗੋਟੀ ਕੱਢ ਲਈ। ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਚੱਟਾਨਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਤ੍ਰੇੜਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਛੁਪਾਇਆ ਸੀ ਉੱਥੋਂ ਕੱਢ ਲਿਆ। ਪਰ ਹੁਣ ਮੈਂ ਲੰਗੋਟੀ ਨੂੰ ਪਹਿਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੱਕਦਾ ਸਾਂ ਕਿਉਂ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਬਰਬਾਦ ਹੋ ਚੁੱਕੀ ਸੀ। ਇਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਕੰਮ ਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ।
8 ਫ਼ੇਰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਦਾ ਸੰਦੇਸ਼ ਮਿਲਿਆ। 9 ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿ ਲੰਗੋਟੀ ਖਰਾਬ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਕੰਮ ਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ, ਮੈਂ ਯਹੂਦਾਹ ਅਤੇ ਯਰੂਸ਼ਲਮ ਦੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਝੂਠਾ ਘੁਮੰਡ ਬਰਬਾਦ ਕਰ ਦਿਆਂਗਾ। 10 ਮੈਂ ਯਹੂਦਾਹ ਦੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਗੁਮਾਨੀ ਅਤੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤਬਾਹ ਕਰ ਦਿਆਂਗਾ। ਉਹ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੰਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਣਨ ਤੋਂ ਇਨਕਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਉਹ ਜ਼ਿੱਦੀ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਮਨ ਆਈਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਉਹ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਅਨੁਯਾਈ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਉਪਾਸਨਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਯਹੂਦਾਹ ਦੇ ਉਹ ਲੋਕ ਇਸ ਕਪੜੇ ਦੀ ਲੰਗੋਟੀ ਵਰਗੇ ਹੋ ਜਾਣਗੇ। ਉਹ ਤਬਾਹ ਹੋ ਜਾਣਗੇ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਵੀ ਕੰਮ ਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿਣਗੇ। 11 ਬੰਦਾ ਲੰਗੋਟੀ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਲੱਕ ਨਾਲ ਕਸੱਕੇ ਬਂਨ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ। ਓਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਇਸਰਾਏਲ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਯਹੂਦਾਹ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਦੁਆਲੇ ਕਸ ਕੇ ਬੰਨ੍ਹਿਆ ਸੀ।” ਇਹ ਸੰਦੇਸ਼ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਹੈ। “ਅਜਿਹਾ ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਲਈ ਕੀਤਾ ਸੀ ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਉਹ ਲੋਕ ਮੇਰੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਬਣਨ। ਫ਼ੇਰ ਮੇਰੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਲਈ ਪ੍ਰਸਿੱਧੀ, ਉਸਤਤ ਅਤੇ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਦਾ ਕਾਰਣ ਬਨਣਗੇ। ਪਰ ਮੇਰੇ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਗੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੁਣੀ।”
ਯਹੂਦਾਹ ਨੂੰ ਚੇਤਾਵਨੀਆਂ
12 “ਯਿਰਮਿਯਾਹ, ਯਹੂਦਾਹ ਦੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਖ: ‘ਇਹੀ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ, ਇਸਰਾਏਲ ਦਾ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ, ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸ਼ਰਾਬ ਦੀ ਹਰ ਮਸ਼ਕ ਸ਼ਰਾਬ ਨਾਲ ਭਰੀ ਹੋਣੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ।’ ਉਹ ਬੰਦੇ ਹੱਸਣਗੇ ਅਤੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਆਖਣਗੇ, ‘ਬੇਸ਼ਕ, ਅਸੀਂ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਹਰ ਸ਼ਰਾਬ ਦੀ ਮਸ਼ਕ ਸ਼ਰਾਬ ਨਾਲ ਭਰੀ ਹੋਣੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ’ 13 ਫ਼ੇਰ ਤੂੰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਖੇਂਗਾ, ‘ਇਹੀ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ: ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਧਰਤੀ ਤੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਰ ਬੰਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਰਾਬੀ ਬੰਦੇ ਵਾਂਗ ਬਣਾ ਦੇਵਾਂਗਾ। ਮੈਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਰਾਜਿਆਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਗੱਲ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ ਜਿਹੜੇ ਦਾਊਦ ਦੇ ਤਖਤ ਉੱਤੇ ਬੈਠੇ ਹਨ। ਮੈਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਜਾਜਕਾਂ, ਜਾਜਕਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਯਰੂਸ਼ਲਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਵੀ ਆਖ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ। 14 ਮੈਂ ਯਹੂਦਾਹ ਦੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਦੂਜੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਜ੍ਜ ਕੇ ਡਿੱਗਣ ਲਾ ਦਿਆਂਗਾ। ਪਿਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਇੱਕ ਦੂਜੇ ਨਾਲ ਟਕਰਾ ਕੇ ਡਿਗ ਪੈਣਗੇ।’ ਇਹ ਸੰਦੇਸ਼ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਹੈ ‘ਮੈਨੂੰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਤਰਸ ਜਾਂ ਅਫ਼ਸੋਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ। ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਰਹਿਮ ਕਾਰਣ ਯਹੂਦਾਹ ਦੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤਬਾਹ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਟਾਂਗਾ।’”
15 ਸੁਣੋ ਅਤੇ ਧਿਆਨ ਕਰੋ।
ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਨੇ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਆਖਿਆ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਮਾਨੀ ਨਾ ਬਣੋ।
16 ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਕਰੋ।
ਉਸਦੀ ਉਸਤਤ ਕਰੋ ਨਹੀਂ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਪਾ ਦੇਵੇਗਾ।
ਇਸਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਕਿ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਹਾੜੀਆਂ ਉੱਤੋਂ ਡਿੱਗ ਪਵੋਁ ਜਿੱਥੇ
ਤੁਸੀਂ ਖਲੋਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਰੌਸ਼ਨੀ ਦਾ ਇੰਤਜ਼ਾਰ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ, ਉਸਦੀ ਉਸਤਤ ਕਰੋ।
ਪਰ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਭਿਆਨਕ ਅੰਧਕਾਰ ਲਿਆਵੇਗਾ।
ਉਹ ਰੌਸ਼ਨੀ ਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਗੂੜੇ ਹਨੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਬਦਲ ਦੇਵੇਗਾ।
17 ਜੇ ਤੁਸਾਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ ਨਾ ਸੁਣੀਁ,
ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਗੁਮਾਨ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਉਦਾਸ ਕਰ ਦੇਵੇਗਾ।
ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਮੁਖ ਛੁਪਾ ਲਵਾਂਗਾ ਅਤੇ ਜ਼ਾਰੋ-ਜ਼ਾਰ ਰੋਵਾਂਗਾ।
ਮੇਰੀਆਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਹੰਝੂ ਵਗ ਤੁਰਨਗੇ। ਕਿਉਂ?
ਕਿਉਂ ਕਿ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਦਾ ਇੱਜੜ [a]
ਫ਼ਾਹ ਲਿਆ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ ਅਤੇ ਚੁੱਕ ਕੇ ਦੂਰ ਲਿਜਾਇਆ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ।
18 ਇਹ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਰਾਜੇ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਦੀ ਰਾਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਦੱਸੋ,
“ਆਪਣੇ ਤਖਤਾਂ ਉੱਪਰੋਂ ਉਤਰ ਆਵੋ।
ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਖੂਬਸੂਰਤ ਤਾਜ਼, ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਸਿਰਾਂ ਉੱਤੋਂ ਡਿੱਗ ਪਏ ਨੇ।”
19 ਨਜ਼ੀਬ ਮਾਰੂਬਲ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਹਿਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਰਵਾਜ਼ੇ ਬੰਦ ਹਨ,
ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਖੋਲ੍ਹ ਸੱਕਦਾ।
ਯਹੂਦਾਹ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਹੀ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਸ਼-ਨਿਕਾਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ,
ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕੈਦੀਆਂ ਵਾਂਗ ਲਿਜਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ।
20 ਦੇਖ, ਯਰੂਸ਼ਲਮ!
ਦੁਸ਼ਮਣ ਉੱਤਰ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਆ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ!
ਤੇਰਾ ਇੱਜੜ ਕਿੱਥੋ ਹੈ,
ਉਹ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਇੱਜੜ [b] ਜਿਹੜਾ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਨੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਸੌਂਪਿਆ ਸੀ।
21 ਤੂੰ ਕੀ ਆਖੇਂਗਾ ਜਦੋਂ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ
ਤੇਰੇ ਉੱਪਰ ਆਗੂਆਂ ਵਜੋਂ ਨਿਯੁਕਤ ਕਰੇਗਾ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ।
ਇਸ ਲਈ ਬੱਚੇ ਨੂੰ ਜਣਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਔਰਤ ਵਾਂਗ
ਤੇਰੇ ਉੱਪਰ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰਾ ਦਰਦ ਆਵੇਗਾ।
22 ਭਾਵੇਂ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਤੋਂ ਪੁੱਛੇਂ,
“ਮੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਇਹ ਮੰਦੀ ਘਟਨਾ ਕਿਉਂ ਵਾਪਰੀ ਹੈ?”
ਇਹ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਅਣਗਿਣਤ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਕਾਰਣ ਵਾਪਰੀਆਂ ਸਨ।
ਤੇਰੇ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਕਾਰਣ ਹੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਘੱਗਰੀ ਪਾਟ ਗਈ ਸੀ
ਅਤੇ ਤੇਰੀਆਂ ਜੁੱਤੀਆਂ ਖੋਹ ਲਈਆਂ ਗਈਆਂ ਸਨ।
ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਰਮਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਕੀਤਾ ਸੀ।
23 ਕਾਲਾ ਆਦਮੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਚਮੜੀ ਦਾ ਰੰਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਦਲ ਸੱਕਦਾ।
ਅਤੇ ਚੀਤਾ, ਆਪਣੇ ਦਾਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਦਲ ਸੱਕਦਾ।
ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਹੀ, ਯਰੂਸ਼ਲਮ, ਤੂੰ ਬਦਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੱਕਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਨੇਕੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸੱਕਦਾ।
ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਮੰਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰਨੀਆਂ ਹੀ ਸਿੱਖਾਈਆਂ ਗਈਆਂ ਹਨ।
24 “ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਘਰੋ ਬਾਹਰ ਜਾਣ ਲਈ ਮਜ਼ਬੂਰ ਕਰ ਦਿਆਂਗਾ।
ਤੂੰ ਚਾਰ-ਚੁਫ਼ੇਰੇ ਭੱਜੇਂਗਾ।
ਤੂੰ ਮਾਰੂਬਲ ਦੀ ਹਵਾ ਦੇ ਉਡਾਏ ਤਿਨਕਿਆਂ ਵਾਂਗ ਹੋਵੇਂਗਾ।
25 ਇਹੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਵਾਪਰੇਗਾ।
ਮੇਰੀਆਂ ਯੋਜਨਾਵਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਇਹੀ ਤੇਰਾ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਹੈ।”
ਇਹ ਸੰਦੇਸ਼ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਸੀ।
“ਇਹ ਕਿਉਂ ਵਾਪਰੇਗਾ? ਕਿਉਂ ਕਿ ਤੂੰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਭੁੱਲ ਗਿਆ ਸੈਂ।
ਤੂੰ ਝੂਠੇ ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਭਰੋਸਾ ਕੀਤਾ।
26 ਯਰੂਸ਼ਲਮ, ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਘੱਗਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੇ ਚਿਹਰੇ ਤੀਕ ਉੱਚੀ ਚੁੱਕ ਦਿਆਂਗਾ।
ਹਰ ਕੋਈ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਦੇਖੇਗਾ ਅਤੇ ਤੂੰ ਸ਼ਰਮਸਾਰ ਹੋਵੇਂਗੀ।
27 ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਭਿਆਨਕ ਕਾਰੇ ਦੇਖੇ ਸਨ।
ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਹੱਸੱਦਿਆਂ ਹੋਇਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੀਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਭੋਗ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਹੋਇਆਂ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਸੀ।
ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀਆਂ ਵੇਸਵਾ ਬਣਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਵਿਉਂਤਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਪਹਾੜੀਆਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਅਤੇ ਖੇਤਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਯਰੂਸ਼ਲਮ, ਇਹ ਤੇਰੇ ਲਈ ਬਹੁਤ ਬੁਰਾ ਹੈ।
ਮੈਂ ਹੈਰਾਨ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਕਿੰਨਾ ਕੁ ਚਿਰ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਪਾਕ ਪਾਪ ਕਰੀ ਜਾਵੇਂਗੀ।”

A Linen Belt
13 This is what the Lord said to me: “Go and buy a linen belt and put it around your waist, but do not let it touch water.” 2 So I bought a belt, as the Lord directed, and put it around my waist.
3 Then the word of the Lord came to me a second time:(A) 4 “Take the belt you bought and are wearing around your waist, and go now to Perath[a](B) and hide it there in a crevice in the rocks.” 5 So I went and hid it at Perath, as the Lord told me.(C)
6 Many days later the Lord said to me, “Go now to Perath and get the belt I told you to hide there.” 7 So I went to Perath and dug up the belt and took it from the place where I had hidden it, but now it was ruined and completely useless.
8 Then the word of the Lord came to me: 9 “This is what the Lord says: ‘In the same way I will ruin the pride of Judah and the great pride(D) of Jerusalem. 10 These wicked people, who refuse to listen(E) to my words, who follow the stubbornness of their hearts(F) and go after other gods(G) to serve and worship them,(H) will be like this belt—completely useless!(I) 11 For as a belt is bound around the waist, so I bound all the people of Israel and all the people of Judah to me,’ declares the Lord, ‘to be my people for my renown(J) and praise and honor.(K) But they have not listened.’(L)

12 “Say to them: ‘This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Every wineskin should be filled with wine.’ And if they say to you, ‘Don’t we know that every wineskin should be filled with wine?’ 13 then tell them, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am going to fill with drunkenness(M) all who live in this land, including the kings who sit on David’s throne, the priests, the prophets and all those living in Jerusalem. 14 I will smash them one against the other, parents and children alike, declares the Lord. I will allow no pity(N) or mercy or compassion(O) to keep me from destroying(P) them.’”
Threat of Captivity
15 Hear and pay attention,
do not be arrogant,
for the Lord has spoken.(Q)
16 Give glory(R) to the Lord your God
before he brings the darkness,
before your feet stumble(S)
on the darkening hills.
You hope for light,
but he will turn it to utter darkness
and change it to deep gloom.(T)
17 If you do not listen,(U)
I will weep in secret
because of your pride;
my eyes will weep bitterly,
overflowing with tears,(V)
because the Lord’s flock(W) will be taken captive.(X)
18 Say to the king(Y) and to the queen mother,(Z)
“Come down from your thrones,
for your glorious crowns(AA)
will fall from your heads.”
19 The cities in the Negev will be shut up,
and there will be no one to open them.
All Judah(AB) will be carried into exile,
carried completely away.
20 Look up and see
those who are coming from the north.(AC)
Where is the flock(AD) that was entrusted to you,
the sheep of which you boasted?
21 What will you say when the Lord sets over you
those you cultivated as your special allies?(AE)
Will not pain grip you
like that of a woman in labor?(AF)
22 And if you ask yourself,
“Why has this happened to me?”(AG)—
it is because of your many sins(AH)
that your skirts have been torn off(AI)
and your body mistreated.(AJ)
23 Can an Ethiopian[b] change his skin
or a leopard its spots?
Neither can you do good
who are accustomed to doing evil.(AK)
24 “I will scatter you like chaff(AL)
driven by the desert wind.(AM)
25 This is your lot,
the portion(AN) I have decreed for you,”
declares the Lord,
“because you have forgotten(AO) me
and trusted in false gods.(AP)
26 I will pull up your skirts over your face
that your shame may be seen(AQ)—
27 your adulteries and lustful neighings,
your shameless prostitution!(AR)
I have seen your detestable acts
on the hills and in the fields.(AS)
Woe to you, Jerusalem!
How long will you be unclean?”(AT)
