Jeremiah’s Life Threatened

18 Now the Lord gave me knowledge of it, and I know it; for You showed me their doings. 19 But I was like a docile lamb brought to the slaughter; and I did not know that they had devised schemes against me, saying, “Let us destroy the tree with its fruit, (A)and let us cut him off from (B)the land of the living, that his name may be remembered no more.”

20 But, O Lord of hosts,
You who judge righteously,
(C)Testing the [a]mind and the heart,
Let me see Your (D)vengeance on them,
For to You I have revealed my cause.

21 “Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the men of (E)Anathoth who seek your life, saying, (F)‘Do not prophesy in the name of the Lord, lest you die by our hand’— 22 therefore thus says the Lord of hosts: ‘Behold, I will punish them. The young men shall die by the sword, their sons and their daughters shall (G)die by famine; 23 and there shall be no remnant of them, for I will bring catastrophe on the men of Anathoth, even (H)the year of their punishment.’ ”

11 He has turned aside my ways and (A)torn me in pieces;
He has made me desolate.
12 He has bent His bow
And (B)set me up as a target for the arrow.

13 He has caused (C)the [a]arrows of His quiver
To pierce my [b]loins.
14 I have become the (D)ridicule of all my people—
(E)Their taunting song all the day.
15 (F)He has filled me with bitterness,
He has made me drink wormwood.

16 He has also broken my teeth (G)with gravel,
And [c]covered me with ashes.
17 You have moved my soul far from peace;
I have forgotten [d]prosperity.

Sorrow Will Turn to Joy

16 “A (A)little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me, (B)because I go to the Father.”

17 Then some of His disciples said among themselves, “What is this that He says to us, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’; and, ‘because I go to the Father’?” 18 They said therefore, “What is this that He says, ‘A little while’? We do not [a]know what He is saying.”

19 Now Jesus knew that they desired to ask Him, and He said to them, “Are you inquiring among yourselves about what I said, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’? 20 Most assuredly, I say to you that you will weep and (C)lament, but the world will rejoice; and you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into (D)joy. 21 (E)A woman, when she is in labor, has sorrow because her hour has come; but as soon as she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22 Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again and (F)your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you.

23 “And in that day you will ask Me nothing. (G)Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, (H)that your joy may be (I)full.

Jesus Christ Has Overcome the World

25 “These things I have spoken to you in figurative language; but the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but I will tell you (J)plainly about the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you; 27 (K)for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and (L)have believed that I came forth from God. 28 (M)I came forth from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world and go to the Father.”

29 His disciples said to Him, “See, now You are speaking plainly, and using no figure of speech! 30 Now we are sure that (N)You know all things, and have no need that anyone should question You. By this (O)we believe that You came forth from God.”

31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 (P)Indeed the hour is coming, yes, has now come, that you will be scattered, (Q)each to his [b]own, and will leave Me alone. And (R)yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. 33 These things I have spoken to you, that (S)in Me you may have peace. (T)In the world you [c]will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, (U)I have overcome the world.”
