Jeremiah 1:4-19

New International Version

The Call of Jeremiah

⁴The word of the Lord came to me, saying,

⁵“Before I formed you in the womb^(A) I knew^[a]^(B) you,
before you were born^(C) I set you apart;^(D)
I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.^(E)”

⁶“Alas, Sovereign Lord,” I said, “I do not know how to speak;^(F) I am too young.”^(G)

⁷But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. ⁸Do not be afraid^(H) of them, for I am with you^(I) and will rescue^(J) you,” declares the Lord.^(K)

⁹Then the Lord reached out his hand and touched^(L) my mouth and said to me, “I have put my words in your mouth.^(M) ¹⁰See, today I appoint you over nations^(N) and kingdoms to uproot^(O) and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant.”^(P)

¹¹The word of the Lord came to me: “What do you see, Jeremiah?”^(Q)

“I see the branch of an almond tree,” I replied.

¹²The Lord said to me, “You have seen correctly, for I am watching^[b]^(R) to see that my word is fulfilled.”

¹³The word of the Lord came to me again: “What do you see?”^(S)

“I see a pot that is boiling,” I answered. “It is tilting toward us from the north.”

¹⁴The Lord said to me, “From the north^(T) disaster will be poured out on all who live in the land. ¹⁵I am about to summon all the peoples of the northern kingdoms,” declares the Lord.

“Their kings will come and set up their thrones
    in the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem;
they will come against all her surrounding walls
    and against all the towns of Judah.^(U)
¹⁶I will pronounce my judgments^(V) on my people
    because of their wickedness^(W) in forsaking me,^(X)
in burning incense to other gods^(Y)
    and in worshiping^(Z) what their hands have made.^(AA)

¹⁷“Get yourself ready! Stand up and say^(AB) to them whatever I command you. Do not be terrified^(AC) by them, or I will terrify you before them. ¹⁸Today I have made you^(AD) a fortified city, an iron pillar and a bronze wall to stand against the whole land—against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests and the people of the land. ¹⁹They will fight against you but will not overcome^(AE) you, for I am with you^(AF) and will rescue^(AG) you,” declares the Lord.

Luke 4:14-21

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

¹⁴Jesus returned to Galilee^(A) in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside.^(B) ¹⁵He was teaching in their synagogues,^(C) and everyone praised him.

¹⁶He went to Nazareth,^(D) where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue,^(E) as was his custom. He stood up to read,^(F) ¹⁷and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:

¹⁸“The Spirit of the Lord is on me,^(G)
    because he has anointed me
    to proclaim good news^(H) to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
    and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
¹⁹    to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”^[a]^(I)

²⁰Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down.^(J) The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. ²¹He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled^(K) in your hearing.”
