¹¹ The people of Israel and the people of Judah
    have been utterly unfaithful^(A) to me,”
declares the Lord.

¹² They have lied^(B) about the Lord;
    they said, “He will do nothing!
No harm will come to us;^(C)
    we will never see sword or famine.^(D)
13 The prophets^(E) are but wind^(F)
    and the word is not in them;
    so let what they say be done to them.”

“Because the people have spoken these words,
    I will make my words in your mouth^(G) a fire^(H)
    and these people the wood it consumes.^(I)
15 People of Israel,” declares the Lord,
    “I am bringing a distant nation^(J) against you—
an ancient and enduring nation,
    a people whose language^(K) you do not know,
    whose speech you do not understand.
¹⁶ Their quivers^(L) are like an open grave;
    all of them are mighty warriors.
¹⁷ They will devour^(M) your harvests and food,
    devour^(N) your sons and daughters;
they will devour^(O) your flocks and herds,
    devour your vines and fig trees.^(P)
With the sword^(Q) they will destroy
    the fortified cities^(R) in which you trust.^(S)

“Cursed is the one who trusts in man,^(A)
    who draws strength from mere flesh
    and whose heart turns away from the Lord.^(B)
6 That person will be like a bush in the wastelands;
    they will not see prosperity when it comes.
They will dwell in the parched places^(C) of the desert,
    in a salt^(D) land where no one lives.

⁷ “But blessed^(E) is the one who trusts^(F) in the Lord,
    whose confidence is in him.
⁸ They will be like a tree planted by the water
    that sends out its roots by the stream.^(G)
It does not fear when heat comes;
    its leaves are always green.
It has no worries in a year of drought^(H)
    and never fails to bear fruit.”^(I)

⁹ The heart^(J) is deceitful above all things
    and beyond cure.
    Who can understand it?

¹⁰ “I the Lord search the heart^(K)
    and examine the mind,^(L)
to reward^(M) each person according to their conduct,
    according to what their deeds deserve.”^(N)
