Message to the Sons of Josiah

11 For thus says the Lord concerning (A)Shallum[a] the son of Josiah, king of Judah, who reigned instead of Josiah his father, (B)who went from this place: “He shall not return here anymore, 12 but he shall die in the place where they have led him captive, and shall see this land no more.

13 “Woe(C) to him who builds his house by unrighteousness
And his [b]chambers by injustice,
(D)Who uses his neighbor’s service without wages
And gives him nothing for his work,
14 Who says, ‘I will build myself a wide house with spacious [c]chambers,
And cut out windows for it,
Paneling it with cedar
And painting it with vermilion.’

15 “Shall you reign because you enclose yourself in cedar?
Did not your father eat and drink,
And do justice and righteousness?
Then (E)it was well with him.
16 He [d]judged the cause of the poor and needy;
Then it was well.
Was not this knowing Me?” says the Lord.
17 “Yet(F) your eyes and your heart are for nothing but your covetousness,
For shedding innocent blood,
And practicing oppression and violence.”

18 Therefore thus says the Lord concerning Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah:

(G)“They shall not lament for him,
Saying, (H)‘Alas, my brother!’ or ‘Alas, my sister!’
They shall not lament for him,
Saying, ‘Alas, master!’ or ‘Alas, his glory!’
19 (I)He shall be buried with the burial of a donkey,
Dragged and cast out beyond the gates of Jerusalem.

20 “Go up to Lebanon, and cry out,
And lift up your voice in Bashan;
Cry from Abarim,
For all your lovers are destroyed.
21 I spoke to you in your prosperity,
But you said, ‘I will not hear.’
(J)This has been your manner from your youth,
That you did not obey My voice.
22 The wind shall eat up all (K)your [e]rulers,
And your lovers shall go into captivity;
Surely then you will be ashamed and humiliated
For all your wickedness.
23 O inhabitant of Lebanon,
Making your nest in the cedars,
How gracious will you be when pangs come upon you,
Like (L)the pain of a woman in [f]labor?

11 For this is what Adonai says about Shalum the son of Yoshiyahu, king of Y’hudah, who succeeded Yoshiyahu his father as king: “He has left this place, never to return; 12 but he will die in the place where they have led him captive, without seeing this land again.

13 “Woe to him who builds his palace unfairly,
its upper rooms by injustice;
who makes his neighbor work for free
and will not give him his wages;
14 who says, ‘I will build me a spacious palace
with airy upper rooms,’
then makes windows and cedar panels
painted with vermilion!
15 Your cedar may be excellent,
but that doesn’t make you a better king.
True, your father ate and drank,
but he also did what was right and just,
so things went well with him.
16 He upheld the cause of the poor and the weak,
so everything went well.
Isn’t that what knowing me
is all about?” says Adonai.
17 “In contrast, your eyes and heart
are controlled entirely by your greed,
your desire for shedding innocent blood,
oppressing and extorting.”

18 Therefore here is what Adonai says concerning Y’hoyakim the son of Yoshiyahu, king of Y’hudah:

“There will be no one to mourn for him,
‘Oh! My brother!’ or ‘Oh! My sister!’
There will be no one to mourn for him,
‘Oh! My master!’ or ‘Oh! His glory!’
19 He will be given a donkey’s ‘burial’ —
dragged out the gates of Yerushalayim
and thrown away [to rot].
20 Climb up to the L’vanon and cry out,
raise your voice in Bashan,
cry out from ‘Avarim,
for all your lovers are broken.
21 I spoke to you in your times of prosperity,
but you said, ‘I won’t listen.’
This has been your pattern since you were young —
you pay no attention to what I say.
22 The wind will shepherd all your shepherds away,
and your lovers will go into captivity.
Then you will be ashamed and disgraced
for all your wicked deeds.
23 You who live in the L’vanon,
nesting in the cedars,
how gracious will you be
when pains come on you like a woman in labor?

11 For this is what the Lord says about Shallum[a](A) son of Josiah, who succeeded his father as king of Judah but has gone from this place: “He will never return. 12 He will die(B) in the place where they have led him captive; he will not see this land again.”

13 “Woe(C) to him who builds(D) his palace by unrighteousness,
    his upper rooms by injustice,
making his own people work for nothing,
not paying(E) them for their labor.
14 He says, ‘I will build myself a great palace(F)
    with spacious upper rooms.’
So he makes large windows in it,
    panels it with cedar(G)
    and decorates it in red.(H)

15 “Does it make you a king
to have more and more cedar?
Did not your father have food and drink?
He did what was right and just,(I)
so all went well(J) with him.
16 He defended the cause of the poor and needy,(K)
    and so all went well.
Is that not what it means to know(L) me?”
    declares the Lord.
17 “But your eyes and your heart
are set only on dishonest gain,(M)
on shedding innocent blood(N)
    and on oppression and extortion.”(O)

18 Therefore this is what the Lord says about Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah:

“They will not mourn(P) for him:
‘Alas, my brother! Alas, my sister!’
They will not mourn for him:
‘Alas, my master! Alas, his splendor!’
19 He will have the burial(Q) of a donkey—
    dragged away and thrown(R)
    outside the gates of Jerusalem.”

20 “Go up to Lebanon and cry out,(S)
let your voice be heard in Bashan,(T)
cry out from Abarim,(U)
for all your allies(V) are crushed.
21 I warned you when you felt secure,(W)
but you said, ‘I will not listen!’
This has been your way from your youth;(X)
    you have not obeyed(Y) me.
22 The wind(Z) will drive all your shepherds(AA) away,
and your allies(AB) will go into exile.
Then you will be ashamed and disgraced(AC)
    because of all your wickedness.
23 You who live in ‘Lebanon,[b](AD)
who are nestled in cedar buildings,
how you will groan when pangs come upon you,
pain(AE) like that of a woman in labor!
