48 Dit is wat de Here van de hemelse legers, de God van Israël, over Moab zegt: ‘De stad Nebo zal in een ruïne veranderen. De stad Kirjataïm en haar versterkingen worden verpletterd en ingenomen. 2-4 Het is afgelopen met Moabs roem, want er is een samenzwering tegen gesmeed. In Chesbon zijn plannen gemaakt die tot zijn vernietiging moeten leiden. “Vooruit,” zeggen zij, “wij zullen ervoor zorgen dat dat volk wordt uitgeroeid.” Ook de stad Madmen zal het zwijgen worden opgelegd. En dan zullen de chaos en het oorlogsgeweld zich over Horonaïm storten, want heel Moab wordt vernietigd. Al zijn kinderen schreeuwen het uit. 5 De vluchtelingen zullen bitter huilend de heuvels van Luhith beklimmen, terwijl angstkreten opklinken uit de stad beneden hen. 6 Vlucht voor uw leven, verberg u in het struikgewas van de woestijn! 7 Want u vertrouwde op uw rijkdom en uw eigen prestaties, daarom zult u als balling worden weggevoerd. Uw god Kemos, met al zijn priesters en dienaren, zal worden meegenomen naar verre landen! 8 Alle dorpen en steden op de hoogvlakten en in de dalen zullen worden verwoest, want de Here heeft het gezegd. 9 Och, had Moab maar vleugels, dan kon het wegvliegen, want zijn steden zullen zonder één levende ziel achterblijven. 10 Vervloekt zijn zij die niet doen wat de Here zegt en geen bloed willen vergieten!
11 Vanaf zijn ontstaan heeft Moab hier gelegen, rustig, niet gestoord door vijandige invallen. Het lijkt op wijn die niet van het ene vat in het andere is overgegoten en daardoor zijn aroma en smaak heeft behouden. Maar nu zal het in ballingschap worden gestuurd! 12 Er komt een tijd,’ heeft de Here gezegd, ‘dat Ik mannen zal sturen die de vaten zullen leeggieten en de kruiken kapot zullen slaan! 13 Dan zal het vertrouwen van Moab in zijn god Kemos worden beschaamd, net als het vertrouwen van Israël in zijn kalfgod in Betel. 14 Herinnert u zich uw opschepperij nog: “Wij zijn helden, moedige mannen in de strijd.” 15 Maar nu staat Moab op het punt te worden vernietigd, zijn beste jongemannen zijn gedoemd te worden afgeslacht,’ zegt de koning, de Here van de hemelse legers.
16 ‘Rampen zullen Moab nu snel treffen, zijn ondergang is nabij. 17 Vrienden van Moab, huil om Moab en troost het! Kijk eens hoe het sterke en roemrijke Moab is vernietigd! 18 Kom naar beneden uit uw glorie en ga in het stof zitten, mensen van Dibon, want zij die Moab verwoesten, zullen dat ook met u doen. Al haar versterkte muren zullen worden neergehaald. 19 De mensen in Aroër staan langs de weg angstig toe te kijken en vragen de vluchtelingen uit Moab: “Wat is er gebeurd?” 20 En die antwoorden: “Moab is totaal verwoest, huil en treur. Vertel aan de oevers van de Arnon dat er van Moab nog slechts een puinhoop over is.” 21 Alle steden in het vlakke land zijn eveneens verwoest, want Gods oordeel is ook over hen uitgestort: over Holon, Jasa, Mefaäth, 22 Dibon, Nebo, Bet-Diblataïm, 23 Kirjataïm, Bet-Gamul, Bet-Meon, 24 Kerioth, Bosra en over alle andere steden van Moab, dichtbij en ver weg. 25 De kracht van Moab is ten einde, zijn horens zijn afgesneden, zijn armen zijn gebroken,’ zegt de Here.
26 ‘Laat Moab wankelen als een dronkaard, want het is opstandig geweest tegen de Here. Moab zal in zijn eigen braaksel vallen en door iedereen worden uitgelachen. 27 Altijd was Israël het mikpunt van uw spot. U kon nooit eens normaal over haar spreken zonder arrogant het hoofd te schudden, alsof u het had over een op heterdaad betrapte dief. 28 O volk van Moab, vlucht uit uw steden en neem uw intrek in de grotten, als duiven die nestelen in de rotskloven. 29 Wij hebben allemaal gehoord van de trots van Moab, want die is groot. Wij kennen uw voornaamheid, arrogantie en onvriendelijkheid. 30 Ik weet dat het brutaal is,’ heeft de Here gezegd, ‘maar zijn gebral is bluf, zijn hulpeloosheid is groot. 31 Ja, daarom rouw Ik om Moab, mijn hart breekt als Ik denk aan de mannen van Kir-Heres. 32 O Sibma, rijk aan wijngaarden, Ik huil om u, net als Jazer. Want de verwoester heeft uw ranken afgehakt die tot aan de zee reikten en uw druiven en zomerfruit geoogst. Hij heeft u kaalgeplukt! 33 Vreugde en blijdschap zijn uit het vruchtbare Moab verdwenen. Er zit geen wijn meer in de kuipen, niemand perst de druiven meer, er klinken geen vreugdekreten meer. 34 Nee, vreselijke kreten van angst en pijn stijgen uit het land op, van Chesbon tot aan Eleále en Jahas, van Soar tot Horonaïm en Eglath-Selisia. Zelfs de vijvers van Nimrim liggen er kurkdroog bij.’ 35 Want de Here zegt: ‘Ik heb een einde gemaakt aan Moabs verering van afgoden en aan het verbranden van reukwerk voor hen. 36 Droevig als een fluit zingt mijn hart voor Moab en Kir-Heres, want al hun rijkdom is verdwenen. 37 Zij scheren hun hoofdhaar en baard uit vertwijfeling af, snijden zich in de handen en dragen rouwkleding. 38 Tranen zullen vloeien in elk Moabitisch huis en in de straten, want Ik heb Moab stukgegooid als een oude, onbruikbare pot. 39 Wat een verwoesting! Luister eens naar het gejammer! Kijk eens hoe erg Moab zich schaamt! Het is nu een afschrikwekkend voorbeeld en een mikpunt van spot geworden voor zijn buren.
40 Een arend cirkelt dreigend boven het land Moab,’ zegt de Here. 41 ‘Zijn steden zijn gevallen, zijn burchten hebben zich overgegeven. De harten van zijn moedigste strijders beven van angst als die van vrouwen die bevallen. 42 Moab zal niet langer als volk voortbestaan, omdat het de Here heeft uitgedaagd. 43 Angst, hinderlagen en bedrog zullen uw lot zijn, Moab,’ zegt de Here. 44 ‘Hij die vlucht, zal in een put vallen en wie zich daaruit weet te bevrijden, zal in een valstrik lopen. Ik zal er voor zorgen dat u daaruit niet ontsnapt, want de tijd van uw veroordeling is aangebroken. 45 Zij vluchten naar Chesbon, niet in staat verder te gaan. Maar Chesbon staat in brand, het vuur verteert de stad van Sichon samen met heel Moab en al zijn opstandige inwoners. 46 Het zal u slecht vergaan, Moab, het volk van de god Kemos is vernietigd, uw kinderen zijn als slaven weggevoerd. 47 Maar in de laatste dagen zal Ik een ommekeer brengen in het lot van Moab,’ zegt de Here.

48 Against Moab thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Woe unto Nebo! for it is spoiled: Kiriathaim is confounded and taken: Misgab is confounded and dismayed.
2 There shall be no more praise of Moab: in Heshbon they have devised evil against it; come, and let us cut it off from being a nation. Also thou shalt be cut down, O Madmen; the sword shall pursue thee.
3 A voice of crying shall be from Horonaim, spoiling and great destruction.
4 Moab is destroyed; her little ones have caused a cry to be heard.
5 For in the going up of Luhith continual weeping shall go up; for in the going down of Horonaim the enemies have heard a cry of destruction.
6 Flee, save your lives, and be like the heath in the wilderness.
7 For because thou hast trusted in thy works and in thy treasures, thou shalt also be taken: and Chemosh shall go forth into captivity with his priests and his princes together.
8 And the spoiler shall come upon every city, and no city shall escape: the valley also shall perish, and the plain shall be destroyed, as the Lord hath spoken.
9 Give wings unto Moab, that it may flee and get away: for the cities thereof shall be desolate, without any to dwell therein.
10 Cursed be he that doeth the work of the Lord deceitfully, and cursed be he that keepeth back his sword from blood.
11 Moab hath been at ease from his youth, and he hath settled on his lees, and hath not been emptied from vessel to vessel, neither hath he gone into captivity: therefore his taste remained in him, and his scent is not changed.
12 Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will send unto him wanderers, that shall cause him to wander, and shall empty his vessels, and break their bottles.
13 And Moab shall be ashamed of Chemosh, as the house of Israel was ashamed of Bethel their confidence.
14 How say ye, We are mighty and strong men for the war?
15 Moab is spoiled, and gone up out of her cities, and his chosen young men are gone down to the slaughter, saith the King, whose name is the Lord of hosts.
16 The calamity of Moab is near to come, and his affliction hasteth fast.
17 All ye that are about him, bemoan him; and all ye that know his name, say, How is the strong staff broken, and the beautiful rod!
18 Thou daughter that dost inhabit Dibon, come down from thy glory, and sit in thirst; for the spoiler of Moab shall come upon thee, and he shall destroy thy strong holds.
19 O inhabitant of Aroer, stand by the way, and espy; ask him that fleeth, and her that escapeth, and say, What is done?
20 Moab is confounded; for it is broken down: howl and cry; tell ye it in Arnon, that Moab is spoiled,
21 And judgment is come upon the plain country; upon Holon, and upon Jahazah, and upon Mephaath,
22 And upon Dibon, and upon Nebo, and upon Bethdiblathaim,
23 And upon Kiriathaim, and upon Bethgamul, and upon Bethmeon,
24 And upon Kerioth, and upon Bozrah, and upon all the cities of the land of Moab, far or near.
25 The horn of Moab is cut off, and his arm is broken, saith the Lord.
26 Make ye him drunken: for he magnified himself against the Lord: Moab also shall wallow in his vomit, and he also shall be in derision.
27 For was not Israel a derision unto thee? was he found among thieves? for since thou spakest of him, thou skippedst for joy.
28 O ye that dwell in Moab, leave the cities, and dwell in the rock, and be like the dove that maketh her nest in the sides of the hole's mouth.
29 We have heard the pride of Moab, (he is exceeding proud) his loftiness, and his arrogancy, and his pride, and the haughtiness of his heart.
30 I know his wrath, saith the Lord; but it shall not be so; his lies shall not so effect it.
31 Therefore will I howl for Moab, and I will cry out for all Moab; mine heart shall mourn for the men of Kirheres.
32 O vine of Sibmah, I will weep for thee with the weeping of Jazer: thy plants are gone over the sea, they reach even to the sea of Jazer: the spoiler is fallen upon thy summer fruits and upon thy vintage.
33 And joy and gladness is taken from the plentiful field, and from the land of Moab, and I have caused wine to fail from the winepresses: none shall tread with shouting; their shouting shall be no shouting.
34 From the cry of Heshbon even unto Elealeh, and even unto Jahaz, have they uttered their voice, from Zoar even unto Horonaim, as an heifer of three years old: for the waters also of Nimrim shall be desolate.
35 Moreover I will cause to cease in Moab, saith the Lord, him that offereth in the high places, and him that burneth incense to his gods.
36 Therefore mine heart shall sound for Moab like pipes, and mine heart shall sound like pipes for the men of Kirheres: because the riches that he hath gotten are perished.
37 For every head shall be bald, and every beard clipped: upon all the hands shall be cuttings, and upon the loins sackcloth.
38 There shall be lamentation generally upon all the housetops of Moab, and in the streets thereof: for I have broken Moab like a vessel wherein is no pleasure, saith the Lord.
39 They shall howl, saying, How is it broken down! how hath Moab turned the back with shame! so shall Moab be a derision and a dismaying to all them about him.
40 For thus saith the Lord; Behold, he shall fly as an eagle, and shall spread his wings over Moab.
41 Kerioth is taken, and the strong holds are surprised, and the mighty men's hearts in Moab at that day shall be as the heart of a woman in her pangs.
42 And Moab shall be destroyed from being a people, because he hath magnified himself against the Lord.
43 Fear, and the pit, and the snare, shall be upon thee, O inhabitant of Moab, saith the Lord.
44 He that fleeth from the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that getteth up out of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for I will bring upon it, even upon Moab, the year of their visitation, saith the Lord.
45 They that fled stood under the shadow of Heshbon because of the force: but a fire shall come forth out of Heshbon, and a flame from the midst of Sihon, and shall devour the corner of Moab, and the crown of the head of the tumultuous ones.
46 Woe be unto thee, O Moab! the people of Chemosh perisheth: for thy sons are taken captives, and thy daughters captives.
47 Yet will I bring again the captivity of Moab in the latter days, saith the Lord. Thus far is the judgment of Moab.

Prophétie sur Moab
48 Sur Moab.
Voici ce que dit l'Eternel, le maître de l’univers, le Dieu d'Israël:
Malheur à Nebo, car elle est dévastée!
Kirjathaïm est couverte de honte car elle est prise,
Misgab est couverte de honte, elle est brisée.
2 On ne chante plus les louanges de Moab.
A Hesbon, on a de mauvaises intentions envers lui: «Allons-y, supprimons-le du milieu des nations!»
Toi aussi, Madmen, tu seras réduite au silence,
car l'épée est sur tes traces.
3 On entend des cris à Choronaïm.
C'est la dévastation, un grand désastre.
4 Moab est brisé. Ses plus petits font entendre leurs cris.
5 C’est avec un torrent de larmes qu’ils gravissent la montée de Luchith
parce qu’ils ont entendu avec angoisse les cris provenant du désastre dans la descente de Choronaïm.
6 Fuyez, sauvez votre vie,
devenez pareils au genévrier dans le désert!
7 Oui, parce que tu as placé ta confiance dans tes réalisations et dans tes trésors,
toi aussi, tu seras pris.
Kemosh partira en exil
avec ses prêtres et ses chefs.
8 Le dévastateur pénétrera dans chaque ville,
aucune ne lui échappera.
La vallée connaîtra la ruine et la plaine sera détruite,
comme l'Eternel l'a dit.
9 Donnez des ailes à Moab,
qu’il s’envole!
Ses villes deviendront des déserts inhabités.
10 Maudit soit celui qui accomplit l'œuvre de l'Eternel avec négligence,
maudit soit celui qui éloigne son épée du sang!
11 Moab vivait en paix depuis sa jeunesse,
il était en repos comme un vin sur sa lie.
Il n’a pas été vidé d'un récipient dans un autre,
il n’est pas parti en exil.
C’est pourquoi son goût lui est resté
et son parfum ne s’est pas altéré.
12 Cependant voici que les jours viennent, déclare l'Eternel,
où je lui enverrai des hommes pour le transvaser.
Ils videront ses récipients
et feront éclater ses outres.
13 Moab aura honte de Kemosh,
tout comme la communauté d'Israël a eu honte
de Béthel, de l’objet de sa confiance.
14 Comment pouvez-vous dire:
«Nous sommes des guerriers,
des soldats redoutables prêts à combattre?»
15 Moab est dévasté, ses villes partent en fumée,
l'élite de ses jeunes gens descend au massacre,
déclare le roi, celui dont le nom est l'Eternel, le maître de l’univers.
16 La ruine de Moab va bientôt arriver,
son malheur va survenir très rapidement.
17 Plaignez-le, vous tous ses voisins,
vous tous qui connaissez son nom!
Dites: «Comment a-t-il pu être brisé, ce sceptre puissant,
ce bâton majestueux?»
18 Descends du haut de ta gloire, assieds-toi dans la soif,
habitante de Dibon!
En effet, le dévastateur de Moab s’en prend à toi,
il démolit tes forteresses.
19 Tiens-toi sur le chemin et fais le guet, habitante d'Aroër!
Interroge le fuyard, le rescapé
en demandant: «Qu'est-il arrivé?»
20 «Moab est couvert de honte, car il est terrorisé.
Hurlez et criez!
Annoncez sur l'Arnon
que Moab est dévasté!»
21 Le jugement a atteint le pays de la plaine,
Holon, Jahats, Méphaath,
22 Dibon, Nebo, Beth-Diblathaïm,
23 Kirjathaïm, Beth-Gamul, Beth-Meon,
24 Kerijoth et Botsra, toutes les villes du pays de Moab,
qu’elles soient près ou loin.
25 La force de Moab a été abattue,
son bras est brisé,
déclare l'Eternel.
26 Enivrez-le, car c’est à l’Eternel qu’il s'est attaqué!
Moab se roule dans son vomi,
il provoque lui aussi la moquerie.
27 Israël n’était-il pas devenu l’objet de tes moqueries?
Avait-il donc été surpris parmi des voleurs,
pour que tu ne parles de lui qu'en secouant la tête?
28 Abandonnez les villes et installez-vous dans les rochers,
habitants de Moab!
Imitez la colombe
qui construit son nid dans la fente d’un ravin!
29 *Nous avons entendu s’exprimer l'orgueil du très arrogant Moab,
sa fierté, son orgueil, son arrogance et son cœur vaniteux.
30 Pour ma part, je connais bien ses excès, déclare l'Eternel.
Son bavardage ne vaut rien,[a]
pas plus que ce qu’il fait.
31 C'est pourquoi je me lamente à propos de Moab,
je crie à cause de tout ce peuple.
On soupire sur les habitants de Kir-Hérès.
32 Vigne de Sibma, je pleure sur toi plus encore que sur Jaezer.
Tes sarments traversaient la mer,
ils atteignaient la mer de Jaezer.
Le dévastateur s'est jeté sur ta récolte de fruits et sur ta vendange.
33 La joie et l'allégresse ont disparu des vergers
et du pays de Moab.
J'ai fait disparaître le vin dans les cuves:
on ne l’y pressera plus avec des cris de joie.
Ces cris ne seront plus des cris de joie.
34 Les cris de détresse venant de Hesbon retentissent jusqu'à Elealé,
ils se font entendre jusqu'à Jahats,
de Tsoar jusqu'à Choronaïm,
et jusqu'à Eglath-Shelishija,
car même l’eau de Nimrim a entièrement disparu.
35 Je supprimerai de Moab, déclare l'Eternel,
celui qui monte sur les hauts lieux
et qui fait brûler de l'encens en l’honneur de son dieu.
36 Aussi mon cœur émet-il un son plaintif sur Moab, comme le font des flûtes.
Mon cœur émet un son plaintif comme celui des flûtes sur les habitants de Kir-Hérès,
parce que les biens qu'ils avaient entassés sont perdus.
37 En effet, toutes les têtes sont tondues
et toutes les barbes sont rasées.
Sur toutes les mains il y a des incisions,
et autour de la taille des sacs.
38 Sur tous les toits et sur les places de Moab,
ce ne sont que lamentations,
parce que j'ai brisé Moab comme on brise un vase qu’on n’aime plus,
déclare l'Eternel.
39 Comment! Il est brisé! Lamentez-vous!
Comment! Moab tourne honteusement le dos!
Moab provoque la moquerie et la terreur
chez tous ses voisins.
40 En effet, voici ce que dit l'Eternel:
Il plane comme l'aigle,
il déploie ses ailes sur Moab.
41 Kerijoth est prise,
les forteresses sont occupées
et, ce jour-là, le cœur des guerriers de Moab
est pareil à celui d'une femme prête à accoucher.
42 Moab sera exterminé. Il cessera d'être un peuple,
car c’est à l’Eternel qu’il s'est attaqué.
43 *La terreur, le trou et le piège
te menacent, habitant de Moab,
déclare l'Eternel.
44 Celui qui prendra la fuite devant la terreur tombera dans le trou
et celui qui remontera du trou sera pris dans le piège,[b]
car je fais venir sur lui, sur Moab,
l'année de mon intervention contre lui, déclare l'Eternel.
45 A l'ombre de Hesbon les fuyards s'arrêtent, épuisés,
mais *un feu sort de Hesbon,
une flamme sort du milieu de Sihon.
Elle dévore les tempes de Moab
et le crâne de ces hommes tapageurs.
46 Malheur à toi, Moab!
Le peuple de Kemosh est perdu!
Oui, tes fils et tes filles sont faits prisonniers.[c]
47 Cependant, dans l’avenir, je ramènerai les déportés de Moab,
déclare l'Eternel.

This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says:
“Woe to Nebo,(C) for it will be ruined.
Kiriathaim(D) will be disgraced and captured;
the stronghold[a] will be disgraced and shattered.
2 Moab will be praised(E) no more;
in Heshbon[b](F) people will plot her downfall:
‘Come, let us put an end to that nation.’(G)
You, the people of Madmen,[c] will also be silenced;
the sword will pursue you.
3 Cries of anguish arise from Horonaim,(H)
cries of great havoc and destruction.
4 Moab will be broken;
her little ones will cry out.[d]
5 They go up the hill to Luhith,(I)
weeping bitterly as they go;
on the road down to Horonaim(J)
anguished cries over the destruction are heard.
6 Flee!(K) Run for your lives;
become like a bush[e] in the desert.(L)
7 Since you trust in your deeds and riches,(M)
you too will be taken captive,
and Chemosh(N) will go into exile,(O)
together with his priests and officials.(P)
8 The destroyer(Q) will come against every town,
and not a town will escape.
The valley will be ruined
and the plateau(R) destroyed,
because the Lord has spoken.
9 Put salt(S) on Moab,
for she will be laid waste[f];(T)
her towns will become desolate,
with no one to live in them.
10 “A curse on anyone who is lax in doing the Lord’s work!
A curse on anyone who keeps their sword(U) from bloodshed!(V)
11 “Moab has been at rest(W) from youth,
like wine left on its dregs,(X)
not poured from one jar to another—
she has not gone into exile.
So she tastes as she did,
and her aroma is unchanged.
12 But days are coming,”
declares the Lord,
“when I will send men who pour from pitchers,
and they will pour her out;
they will empty her pitchers
and smash her jars.
13 Then Moab will be ashamed(Y) of Chemosh,(Z)
as Israel was ashamed
when they trusted in Bethel.(AA)
14 “How can you say, ‘We are warriors,(AB)
men valiant in battle’?
15 Moab will be destroyed and her towns invaded;
her finest young men(AC) will go down in the slaughter,(AD)”
declares the King,(AE) whose name is the Lord Almighty.(AF)
16 “The fall of Moab is at hand;(AG)
her calamity will come quickly.
17 Mourn for her, all who live around her,
all who know her fame;(AH)
say, ‘How broken is the mighty scepter,(AI)
how broken the glorious staff!’
18 “Come down from your glory
and sit on the parched ground,(AJ)
you inhabitants of Daughter Dibon,(AK)
for the one who destroys Moab
will come up against you
and ruin your fortified cities.(AL)
19 Stand by the road and watch,
you who live in Aroer.(AM)
Ask the man fleeing and the woman escaping,
ask them, ‘What has happened?’
20 Moab is disgraced, for she is shattered.
Wail(AN) and cry out!
Announce by the Arnon(AO)
that Moab is destroyed.
21 Judgment has come to the plateau(AP)—
to Holon,(AQ) Jahzah(AR) and Mephaath,(AS)
22 to Dibon,(AT) Nebo(AU) and Beth Diblathaim,
23 to Kiriathaim,(AV) Beth Gamul and Beth Meon,(AW)

to all the towns(AZ) of Moab, far and near.
25 Moab’s horn[g](BA) is cut off;
her arm(BB) is broken,”
declares the Lord.
26 “Make her drunk,(BC)
for she has defied(BD) the Lord.
Let Moab wallow in her vomit;(BE)
let her be an object of ridicule.(BF)
27 Was not Israel the object of your ridicule?(BG)
Was she caught among thieves,(BH)
that you shake your head(BI) in scorn(BJ)
whenever you speak of her?
28 Abandon your towns and dwell among the rocks,
you who live in Moab.
Be like a dove(BK) that makes its nest
at the mouth of a cave.(BL)
29 “We have heard of Moab’s pride(BM)—
how great is her arrogance!—
of her insolence, her pride, her conceit
and the haughtiness(BN) of her heart.
30 I know her insolence but it is futile,”
declares the Lord,
“and her boasts(BO) accomplish nothing.
31 Therefore I wail(BP) over Moab,
for all Moab I cry out,
I moan for the people of Kir Hareseth.(BQ)
32 I weep for you, as Jazer(BR) weeps,
you vines of Sibmah.(BS)
Your branches spread as far as the sea[h];
they reached as far as[i] Jazer.
The destroyer has fallen
on your ripened fruit and grapes.
33 Joy and gladness are gone
from the orchards and fields of Moab.
I have stopped the flow of wine(BT) from the presses;
no one treads them with shouts of joy.(BU)
Although there are shouts,
they are not shouts of joy.
34 “The sound of their cry rises
from Heshbon(BV) to Elealeh(BW) and Jahaz,(BX)
from Zoar(BY) as far as Horonaim(BZ) and Eglath Shelishiyah,
for even the waters of Nimrim are dried up.(CA)
35 In Moab I will put an end
to those who make offerings on the high places(CB)
and burn incense(CC) to their gods,”
declares the Lord.
36 “So my heart laments(CD) for Moab like the music of a pipe;
it laments like a pipe for the people of Kir Hareseth.(CE)
The wealth they acquired(CF) is gone.
37 Every head is shaved(CG)
and every beard(CH) cut off;
every hand is slashed
and every waist is covered with sackcloth.(CI)
38 On all the roofs in Moab
and in the public squares(CJ)
there is nothing but mourning,
for I have broken Moab
like a jar(CK) that no one wants,”
declares the Lord.
39 “How shattered(CL) she is! How they wail!
How Moab turns her back in shame!
Moab has become an object of ridicule,(CM)
an object of horror to all those around her.”
40 This is what the Lord says:
“Look! An eagle is swooping(CN) down,
spreading its wings(CO) over Moab.
41 Kerioth[j](CP) will be captured
and the strongholds taken.
In that day the hearts of Moab’s warriors(CQ)
will be like the heart of a woman in labor.(CR)
42 Moab will be destroyed(CS) as a nation(CT)
because she defied(CU) the Lord.
43 Terror(CV) and pit and snare(CW) await you,
you people of Moab,”
declares the Lord.
44 “Whoever flees(CX) from the terror
will fall into a pit,
whoever climbs out of the pit
will be caught in a snare;
for I will bring on Moab
the year(CY) of her punishment,”
declares the Lord.
45 “In the shadow of Heshbon
the fugitives stand helpless,
for a fire has gone out from Heshbon,
a blaze from the midst of Sihon;(CZ)
it burns the foreheads of Moab,
the skulls(DA) of the noisy boasters.
46 Woe to you, Moab!(DB)
The people of Chemosh are destroyed;
your sons are taken into exile
and your daughters into captivity.
47 “Yet I will restore(DC) the fortunes of Moab
in days to come,”
declares the Lord.
Here ends the judgment on Moab.
