Påminnelse om förbundet
1-3 Då talade Herren än en gång till Jeremia och sa:Påminn dem som bor i Juda och Jerusalem om att jag slöt ett förbund med deras förfäder och att det vilar en förbannelse över den människa som inte håller det!
4 När jag ledde dem bort från slaveriet i Egypten sa jag till dem: Om ni lyder mig och gör vad jag befaller er, ska ni och era barn vara mitt folk, och jag ska vara er Gud.
5 Därför, Israel, om du lyder mig ska jag hålla den ed som jag svurit med dina förfäder och låta dig behålla landet som flyter av mjölk och honung, det land som ni nu äger. Då svarade jag: Ja, låt detta ske, Herre!
6 Då sa Herren: Sänd ut det här budskapet på Jerusalems gator, gå från stad till stad i hela landet och säg: Kom ihåg den överenskommelse som era förfäder gjorde med Gud, och gör allt det som de lovade honom att de skulle göra.
7 För jag sa till era förfäder när jag ledde ut dem ur Egypten och har upprepat det gång på gång ända till i dag: Lyd alla mina befallningar!
8 Men era förfäder gjorde det inte. De ville inte ens lyssna. Var och en följde sin egen okuvliga vilja och sitt stolta hjärta. Eftersom de vägrade lyda lät jag dem möta de olyckor som finns beskrivna i förbundet.
9 Herren talade igen till mig och sa: Jag har upptäckt en sammansvärjning mot mig bland folket i Juda och Jerusalem.
10 De har vänt tillbaka till sina förfäders synder, genom att dyrka avgudar och vägra lyssna till mig. Förbundet som jag slöt med deras förfäder har brutits.
11 Därför tänker jag låta olycka komma över dem, och de ska inte kunna fly undan, säger Herren. Hur de än ropar på barmhärtighet, ska jag inte lyssna till dem.
12 Då kommer de att be till sina avgudar och tända offereldar åt dem, men dessa kan inte rädda dem när olyckans tid är inne.
13 Mitt folk, du har lika många gudar som det finns städer, och dina skamliga offeraltaren åt Baal finns utmed varje gata i Jerusalem.
14 Jeremia, be därför inte längre för folket. Gråt inte och be inte om nåd för dem! Jag kommer inte att lyssna till dem ens när de slutligen tvingas be mig om hjälp.
15 Vad har mitt älskade folk för rätt att komma till mitt tempel? Man har varit trolös och tillbett andra gudar. Kan löften och offer nu hindra min dom?
16 Herren brukade kalla dig sitt gröna olivträd, vackert att se och dignande av frukt, men nu har han sänt dina fiender att förstöra dig. De kommer att låta dig brinna och dina grenar kommer att brytas av.
17 När Israel och Juda tände offereld åt Baal gav Herren befallning om att det träd som han själv hade planterat skulle förstöras.
18 Sedan talade Herren med mig om alla deras planer och visade mig deras intriger.
19 Jag hade varit lika godtrogen som ett oskyldigt lamm på väg till slakt. Jag visste inte att de tänkte döda mig. Låt oss göra slut på den mannen och alla hans budskap, sa de. Låt oss döda honom, så att hans namn glöms bort för alltid.
20 Men du Herre, härskarornas Gud, är rättvis. Se på dessa människors motiv. Jag vänder mig till dig för att få rättvisa.
21-22 Herren svarade: Männen i Anatot, de som säger till dig att inte profetera i Herrens namn om du inte vill bli dödad, ska själva straffas med döden. Deras unga män ska dö i strid. Deras döttrar och söner ska svälta.
23 Inte en enda av dem ska överleva, för jag ska låta olycka komma över dem när deras tid är inne.

11 Detta är det ord som Herren talade till Jeremia. Han sade: 2 "Hör detta förbunds ord och säg till Juda män och Jerusalems invånare. 3 Säg till dem: Så säger Herren, Israels Gud: Förbannad är den man som inte lyder detta förbunds ord, 4 som jag ålade era fäder på den dag då jag förde dem ut ur Egyptens land, denna smältugn. Jag sade: Hör min röst och gör allt som jag har befallt, så skall ni vara mitt folk och jag skall vara er Gud. 5 Jag skall då hålla den ed som jag har svurit era fäder: Att ge dem ett land som flödar av mjölk och honung, så som har skett." Jag svarade: "Ja, amen, Herre."
6 Herren sade till mig: "Ropa ut allt detta i Juda städer och på Jerusalems gator. Säg: Hör detta förbunds ord och handla efter dem. 7 Ty från den dag, då jag förde era fäder ut ur Egyptens land och ända till denna dag har jag förmanat dem gång på gång och sagt: Hör min röst! 8 Men de lyssnade inte och vände inte örat till utan följde var och en sitt onda och hårda hjärta. Därför lät jag komma över dem allt vad jag hade sagt i det förbund som jag befallde dem att hålla, men som de inte höll."
9 Herren sade till mig: "En sammansvärjning har avslöjats bland Juda män och Jerusalems invånare. 10 De har vänt åter till de missgärningar deras fäder begick. De har inte velat höra mina ord utan har följt andra gudar och tjänat dem. Israels och Juda hus har brutit det förbund som jag slöt med deras fäder. 11 Därför säger Herren så: Se, jag skall låta en olycka drabba dem, som de inte skall kunna komma undan, och när de då ropar till mig skall jag inte höra dem. 12 Då skall Juda städer och Jerusalems invånare gå bort och ropa till de gudar som de brukar tända rökelse åt, men dessa skall inte kunna rädda dem undan olyckan. 13 Ty du, Juda, har lika många gudar som du har städer. Och så många som gatorna är i Jerusalem, så många altaren har ni satt upp åt skammens gud - altaren där ni tänder rökelse åt Baal.
14 Du skall inte be för detta folk, inte komma med klagan eller förbön för dem, ty jag vill inte höra dem när de ropar till mig i sin olycka.
15 Vad har min älskade att göra i mitt hus, då hon gör så många skamliga gärningar? Kan det heliga offerköttet skaffa bort din olycka från dig? Då kunde du jubla. 16 'Ett grönt olivträd, vackert och med härliga frukter', så kallade Herren dig. Men nu har han med ett väldigt dån satt eld på det trädet, så att dess grenar förstörs. 17 Ja, Herren Sebaot, som planterade dig, har uttalat olycka över dig på grund av den ondska som Israels och Juda hus har bedrivit för att väcka min vrede genom att tända rökelse åt Baal."
Mordhot mot profeten
18 Herren uppenbarade för mig
och jag fick veta det,
du lät mig se vad de hade för sig.
19 Själv var jag som ett oskyldigt lamm
som leds bort för att slaktas.
Jag visste inte att de tänkte ut onda planer mot mig:
"Låt oss fördärva trädet med dess frukt,
låt oss utrota honom ur de levandes land,
så att man inte mer kommer ihåg hans namn."
20 Men Herren Sebaot är en rättvis domare
som prövar hjärtan och njurar.
Låt mig få se din hämnd på dem,
ty för dig har jag lagt fram min sak.
21 Därför säger Herren så om Anatots män, som står efter ditt liv och säger: "Profetera inte i Herrens namn, om du inte vill dö för vår hand!" 22 Därför säger Herren Sebaot så: Se, jag skall straffa dem. Deras unga män skall dö genom svärd och deras söner och döttrar skall dö genom hunger. 23 Ingen skall bli kvar av dem, ty jag skall låta olycka drabba Anatots män, när straffets tid kommer.

The Covenant Is Broken
11 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 2 “Listen to the terms of this covenant(A) and tell them to the people of Judah and to those who live in Jerusalem. 3 Tell them that this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Cursed(B) is the one who does not obey the terms of this covenant— 4 the terms I commanded your ancestors when I brought them out of Egypt,(C) out of the iron-smelting furnace.(D)’ I said, ‘Obey(E) me and do everything I command you, and you will be my people,(F) and I will be your God. 5 Then I will fulfill the oath I swore(G) to your ancestors, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey’(H)—the land you possess today.”
I answered, “Amen,(I) Lord.”
6 The Lord said to me, “Proclaim(J) all these words in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem: ‘Listen to the terms of this covenant and follow(K) them. 7 From the time I brought your ancestors up from Egypt until today, I warned them again and again,(L) saying, “Obey me.” 8 But they did not listen or pay attention;(M) instead, they followed the stubbornness of their evil hearts.(N) So I brought on them all the curses(O) of the covenant I had commanded them to follow but that they did not keep.(P)’”
9 Then the Lord said to me, “There is a conspiracy(Q) among the people of Judah and those who live in Jerusalem. 10 They have returned to the sins of their ancestors,(R) who refused to listen to my words.(S) They have followed other gods(T) to serve them.(U) Both Israel and Judah have broken the covenant(V) I made with their ancestors. 11 Therefore this is what the Lord says: ‘I will bring on them a disaster(W) they cannot escape.(X) Although they cry(Y) out to me, I will not listen(Z) to them. 12 The towns of Judah and the people of Jerusalem will go and cry out to the gods to whom they burn incense,(AA) but they will not help them at all when disaster(AB) strikes. 13 You, Judah, have as many gods(AC) as you have towns;(AD) and the altars you have set up to burn incense(AE) to that shameful(AF) god Baal are as many as the streets of Jerusalem.’
14 “Do not pray(AG) for this people or offer any plea or petition for them, because I will not listen(AH) when they call to me in the time of their distress.
15 “What is my beloved doing in my temple
as she, with many others, works out her evil schemes?
Can consecrated meat(AI) avert your punishment?(AJ)
When you engage in your wickedness,
then you rejoice.[a]”
16 The Lord called you a thriving olive tree(AK)
with fruit beautiful in form.
But with the roar of a mighty storm
he will set it on fire,(AL)
and its branches will be broken.(AM)
17 The Lord Almighty, who planted(AN) you, has decreed disaster(AO) for you, because the people of both Israel and Judah have done evil and aroused(AP) my anger by burning incense to Baal.(AQ)
Plot Against Jeremiah
18 Because the Lord revealed their plot to me, I knew it, for at that time he showed me what they were doing. 19 I had been like a gentle lamb led to the slaughter;(AR) I did not realize that they had plotted(AS) against me, saying,
“Let us destroy the tree and its fruit;
let us cut him off from the land of the living,(AT)
that his name be remembered(AU) no more.”
20 But you, Lord Almighty, who judge righteously(AV)
and test the heart(AW) and mind,(AX)
let me see your vengeance(AY) on them,
for to you I have committed my cause.
21 Therefore this is what the Lord says about the people of Anathoth(AZ) who are threatening to kill you,(BA) saying, “Do not prophesy(BB) in the name of the Lord or you will die(BC) by our hands”— 22 therefore this is what the Lord Almighty says: “I will punish them. Their young men(BD) will die by the sword, their sons and daughters by famine. 23 Not even a remnant(BE) will be left to them, because I will bring disaster on the people of Anathoth in the year of their punishment.(BF)”

7 For I earnestly protested unto your fathers in the day that I brought them up out of the land of Egypt, even unto this day, rising early and protesting, saying, Obey my voice.
8 Yet they obeyed not, nor inclined their ear, but walked every one in the imagination of their evil heart: therefore I will bring upon them all the words of this covenant, which I commanded them to do: but they did them not.
9 And the Lord said unto me, A conspiracy is found among the men of Judah, and among the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
10 They are turned back to the iniquities of their forefathers, which refused to hear my words; and they went after other gods to serve them: the house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken my covenant which I made with their fathers.
11 Therefore thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will bring evil upon them, which they shall not be able to escape; and though they shall cry unto me, I will not hearken unto them.
12 Then shall the cities of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem go, and cry unto the gods unto whom they offer incense: but they shall not save them at all in the time of their trouble.
13 For according to the number of thy cities were thy gods, O Judah; and according to the number of the streets of Jerusalem have ye set up altars to that shameful thing, even altars to burn incense unto Baal.
14 Therefore pray not thou for this people, neither lift up a cry or prayer for them: for I will not hear them in the time that they cry unto me for their trouble.
15 What hath my beloved to do in mine house, seeing she hath wrought lewdness with many, and the holy flesh is passed from thee? when thou doest evil, then thou rejoicest.
16 The Lord called thy name, A green olive tree, fair, and of goodly fruit: with the noise of a great tumult he hath kindled fire upon it, and the branches of it are broken.
17 For the Lord of hosts, that planted thee, hath pronounced evil against thee, for the evil of the house of Israel and of the house of Judah, which they have done against themselves to provoke me to anger in offering incense unto Baal.
18 And the Lord hath given me knowledge of it, and I know it: then thou shewedst me their doings.
19 But I was like a lamb or an ox that is brought to the slaughter; and I knew not that they had devised devices against me, saying, Let us destroy the tree with the fruit thereof, and let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name may be no more remembered.
20 But, O Lord of hosts, that judgest righteously, that triest the reins and the heart, let me see thy vengeance on them: for unto thee have I revealed my cause.
21 Therefore thus saith the Lord of the men of Anathoth, that seek thy life, saying, Prophesy not in the name of the Lord, that thou die not by our hand:
22 Therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts, Behold, I will punish them: the young men shall die by the sword; their sons and their daughters shall die by famine:
23 And there shall be no remnant of them: for I will bring evil upon the men of Anathoth, even the year of their visitation.

The Broken Covenant

16 The Lord called your name,

17 “For the Lord of hosts, (U)who planted you, has pronounced doom against you for the evil of the house of Israel and of the house of Judah, which they have done against themselves to provoke Me to anger in offering incense to Baal.”
Jeremiah’s Life Threatened
18 Now the Lord gave me knowledge of it, and I know it; for You showed me their doings. 19 But I was like a docile lamb brought to the slaughter; and I did not know that they had devised schemes against me, saying, “Let us destroy the tree with its fruit, (V)and let us cut him off from (W)the land of the living, that his name may be remembered no more.”
20 But, O Lord of hosts,
You who judge righteously,
(X)Testing the [d]mind and the heart,
Let me see Your (Y)vengeance on them,
For to You I have revealed my cause.
21 “Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the men of (Z)Anathoth who seek your life, saying, (AA)‘Do not prophesy in the name of the Lord, lest you die by our hand’— 22 therefore thus says the Lord of hosts: ‘Behold, I will punish them. The young men shall die by the sword, their sons and their daughters shall (AB)die by famine; 23 and there shall be no remnant of them, for I will bring catastrophe on the men of Anathoth, even (AC)the year of their punishment.’ ”
