Gottes letzter Mahnruf an das verhärtete Volk von Juda
Der Herr beruft Jeremia und gibt ihm seinen Auftrag
1 Die Worte Jeremias, des Sohnes Hilkias, von den Priestern, die in Anatot im Land Benjamin wohnten,
2 an welchen das Wort des Herrn erging in den Tagen Josias, des Sohnes Amons, des Königs von Juda, im dreizehnten Jahr seiner Regierung,
3 und auch in den Tagen Jojakims, des Sohnes Josias, des Königs von Juda, bis zum Ende des elften Jahres Zedekias, des Sohnes Josias, des Königs von Juda, bis zur Wegführung Jerusalems im fünften Monat.
4 Und das Wort des Herrn erging an mich folgendermaßen[a]:
5 Ehe ich dich im Mutterleib bildete, habe ich dich ersehen[b], und bevor du aus dem Mutterschoß hervorkamst, habe ich dich geheiligt; zum Propheten für die Völker habe ich dich bestimmt!
6 Da sprach ich: Ach, Herr, Herr[c], siehe, ich kann nicht reden, denn ich bin noch zu jung[d]!
7 Aber der Herr sprach zu mir: Sage nicht: »Ich bin zu jung«; sondern du sollst zu allen hingehen, zu denen ich dich sende, und du sollst alles reden, was ich dir gebiete!
8 Fürchte dich nicht vor ihnen[e]! Denn ich bin mit dir, um dich zu erretten, spricht der Herr[f].
9 Und der Herr streckte seine Hand aus und rührte meinen Mund an; und der Herr sprach zu mir: Siehe, ich lege meine Worte in deinen Mund!
10 Siehe, ich setze dich am heutigen Tag über die Völker und über die Königreiche ein, um auszurotten und niederzureißen, und um zu zerstören und abzubrechen, um zu bauen und zu pflanzen.
11 Und das Wort des Herrn erging an mich folgendermaßen: Was siehst du, Jeremia? Da sprach ich: Ich sehe den Zweig eines Wächterbaumes[g].
12 Da sprach der Herr zu mir: Du hast recht gesehen; denn ich werde über meinem Wort wachen, um es auszuführen!
13 Und das Wort des Herrn erging zum zweiten Mal an mich: Was siehst du? Da antwortete ich: Ich sehe einen siedenden Topf, der kommt von Norden her!
14 Und der Herr sprach zu mir: Von Norden her wird das Unheil über alle Bewohner des Landes entfesselt werden.
15 Denn siehe, ich rufe alle Geschlechter der Königreiche des Nordens, spricht der Herr, damit sie kommen und jeder seinen Thron aufstellt vor den Toren Jerusalems und gegen alle seine Mauern ringsum und gegen alle Städte Judas;
16 und ich will mein Urteil über sie fällen wegen all ihrer Bosheit, dass sie mich verlassen haben und anderen Göttern Räucherwerk dargebracht und die Werke ihrer Hände angebetet haben.
17 Du aber, gürte deine Lenden,[h] mache dich auf und rede zu ihnen alles, was ich dir gebieten werde! Sei nicht verzagt vor ihnen, damit ich dich nicht vor ihnen verzagt mache!
18 Siehe, ich mache dich heute zu einer festen Stadt und zu einer eisernen Säule und zu einer ehernen Mauer gegen das ganze Land, gegen die Könige von Juda, gegen ihre Fürsten, gegen ihre Priester und gegen das Volk des Landes;
19 sie werden zwar gegen dich kämpfen, aber sie werden dich nicht überwältigen; denn ich bin mit dir, spricht der Herr, um dich zu erretten!

Chapter 1
1 The words of Jeremiah, the son of Hilkiah, a member of the priestly family in Anathoth in the territory of Benjamin. 2 The word of the Lord came to him during the thirteenth year of the reign of King Josiah, son of Amon, king of Judah. 3 Then it continued through the reign of Jehoiakim, son of Josiah, king of Judah, until the eleventh year of Zedekiah, son of Josiah, king of Judah, when in the fifth month the inhabitants of Jerusalem were carried off into exile.
Jeremiah’s Call from God. 4 The word of the Lord came to me, saying:
5 Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
and before you were born I consecrated you.
I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.
6 Then I replied, “Ah, Lord God! You must be aware that I am not skilled in the art of speaking. I am only a young boy.” 7 But the Lord said:
Do not say, “I am only a young boy.”
You will go to whomever I send you,
and you will speak whatever I command you.
8 Do not be afraid of them,
for I am with you to deliver you,
says the Lord.
9 Then the Lord stretched forth his hand and touched my mouth, and he said to me:
Behold, I have placed my words into your mouth.
10 This day I have established you
over nations and kingdoms,
to uproot and to pull down,
to destroy and to demolish,
to build and to plant.
11 [b]The word of the Lord came to me, inquiring, “What do you see, Jeremiah?” I replied, “I see a branch of an almond tree.” 12 Then the Lord said to me, “You have answered well, for I am watching to ensure that my word is fulfilled.”
13 The word of the Lord came to me a second time, asking, “What do you see?” I replied, “I see a boiling cauldron that is tilting away from the north.” 14 Then the Lord said:
From the north disaster will boil over
upon all the inhabitants of the land.
15 For now I am summoning all the tribes
of the kingdoms of the north, says the Lord.
Their kings will advance,
and each will establish his throne
in front of the gates of Jerusalem,
against all its surrounding walls
and against all the cities of Judah.
16 I will issue my judgments against them
for all their wickedness in abandoning me,
in offering sacrifices to other gods
and worshiping what their hands have fashioned.
17 As for you, be prepared for action;
stand up and tell them
everything that I command you.
Do not have any fear of them
or I will make you cringe in terror before them.
18 For this very day
I have made you into a fortified city,
a pillar of iron, a wall of bronze,
to overcome the entire country—
the kings and the princes of Judah,
its priests and its people.
19 They will fight against you
but they will not be victorious,
for I will be at your side to deliver you,
says the Lord.

- Jeremiah 1:1 This lengthy section, which occupies half of the Book and begins with the call of Jeremiah, contains mainly prophecies addressed to the kingdom of Judah. They occur throughout the career of the prophet, although it is not possible to show a clear reductional plan.
- Jeremiah 1:11 In Hebrew, the word for almond tree means “watchful.” Because of its early blooming, the tree seems, as it were, to be waiting for spring in order to proclaim its presence. The boiling cauldron of verse 13 refers to misfortune, which, for Palestine, usually came from the north. Hard trials await Jeremiah (v. 17ff), but God will be with him.

1 These are the words of Jeremiah son of Hilkiah [C perhaps the person who discovered the lost book of the law; 2 Kin. 22:4, 8–14]. ·He belonged to the family of [L …from the] priests who lived in Anathoth [C a town given to the Levites a few miles northeast of Jerusalem; Josh. 21:18; 1 Kin. 2:26] in the land of Benjamin. 2 The Lord spoke his word to Jeremiah during the thirteenth year that Josiah son of Amon was king of Judah [C 627–626 bc; a good king who returned Israel to true worship; 2 Kin. 22:1—23:31; 2 Chr. 34–35]. 3 The Lord also spoke to Jeremiah while Jehoiakim [2 Kin. 23:34–37; 2 Chr. 36:4–8] son of Josiah was king of Judah and during the eleven years that Zedekiah [2 Kin. 24:18–20; 2 Chr. 36:11–16] son of Josiah was king of Judah. In the fifth month of his last year [C 586 bc], the people of Jerusalem were taken away as ·captives [exiles; 2 Kin. 25:1–21; 2 Chr. 36:4–8].
The Lord Calls Jeremiah
4 The Lord spoke his word to me, saying:
5 “Before I ·made [formed] you in your mother’s womb, I ·chose [L knew] you.
Before you ·were born [L came out of the womb], I ·set you apart for a special work [consecrated you].
I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”
6 Then I said, “But Lord God, I don’t know how to speak. I am only a ·boy [child; youth].”
7 But the Lord said to me, “Don’t say, ‘I am only a ·boy [child; youth].’ You must go everywhere I send you, and you must say everything I ·tell you to say [L command you]. 8 Don’t be afraid of anyone, because I am with you to protect you,” says the Lord.
9 Then the Lord ·reached [L sent] out his hand and touched my mouth [C to consecrate it; Is. 6:7]. He said to me, “See, I am putting my words in your mouth. 10 Today I have ·put you in charge of [L appointed you over] nations and kingdoms. You will ·pull [pluck] up and ·tear [pull] down, destroy and overthrow, build up and plant [C he will announce judgment and salvation].”
Jeremiah Sees Two Visions
11 The Lord spoke his word to me, saying: “Jeremiah, what do you see?”
I answered, “I see a ·stick [branch] of almond ·wood [tree].”
12 The Lord said to me, “You have seen correctly, because I am watching to make sure my words come true [C “to watch” (shaqad) sounds like “almond tree” (shoqed)].”
13 The Lord spoke his word to me ·again [or a second time]: “What do you see?”
I answered, “I see a pot of boiling water, tipping over from the north.”
14 The Lord said to me, “Disaster will ·come [let loose; open up] from the north and strike all the people who live in this country [C the Babylonians would attack from the north]. 15 In a short time I will call all of the ·people [clans] in the northern kingdoms,” said the Lord.
“Those kings will come and set up their thrones
near the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem.
They will attack all the city walls around Jerusalem
and all the cities in Judah.
16 And I will announce my judgments against my people
because of their evil in ·turning away from [abandoning; forsaking] me.
They ·offered sacrifices [or burned incense] to other gods
and ·worshiped [bowed down to] ·idols they had made with [L the works of] their own hands.
17 “Jeremiah, ·get ready [brace yourself; L gird up your loins]. Stand up and tell them everything I command you to say. Don’t be afraid of the people, or I will give you good reason to be afraid of them. 18 Today I am going to make you a ·strong [fortified] city, an iron pillar, a bronze wall. You will be able to stand against everyone in the land: Judah’s kings, officers, priests, and the people of the land. 19 They will fight against you, but they will not ·defeat [prevail over] you, because I am with you to protect you!” says the Lord.
