Profecías contra los reyes de Judá
22 Así dice el Señor: Desciende a la casa del rey de Judá y habla allí esta palabra, 2 y di: «Escucha la palabra del Señor, oh rey de Judá, que te sientas sobre el trono de David, tú, tus siervos y tu pueblo, los que entran por estas puertas(A). 3 Así dice el Señor: “Practicad el derecho y la justicia, y librad al despojado de manos de su opresor(B). Tampoco maltratéis ni hagáis violencia al extranjero, al huérfano o a la viuda(C), ni derraméis sangre inocente en este lugar(D). 4 Porque si en verdad observáis este mandato, entonces entrarán reyes por las puertas de esta casa, y se sentarán en el lugar de David[a], en su trono; entrarán montados en carros y caballos, el rey[b], sus siervos y su pueblo(E). 5 Pero si no obedecéis estas palabras(F), juro por mí mismo” —declara el Señor(G)— “que esta casa vendrá a ser una desolación”». 6 Porque así dice el Señor acerca de la casa del rey de Judá:
Como Galaad(H) eres para mí,
como la cumbre del Líbano;
pero ciertamente te convertiré en un desierto,
como ciudades deshabitadas(I).
7 Designaré contra ti destructores(J),
cada uno con sus armas,
y cortarán tus cedros más selectos(K)
y los echarán al fuego(L).
8 Pasarán muchas naciones junto a esta ciudad, y dirá cada cual a su prójimo: «¿Por qué ha hecho así el Señor a esta gran ciudad(M)?». 9 Entonces responderán[c]: «Porque abandonaron el pacto del Señor su Dios, y se postraron ante otros dioses y les sirvieron(N)».
10 No lloréis por el muerto ni hagáis duelo por él,
llorad amargamente por el que se va(O),
porque jamás volverá
ni verá su tierra natal(P).
11 Porque así dice el Señor acerca de Salum[d], hijo de Josías, rey de Judá, que reinó en lugar de su padre Josías, y que salió de este lugar: Nunca más volverá aquí(Q); 12 sino que en el lugar adonde lo llevaron cautivo, allí morirá(R), y no verá más esta tierra.
13 Ay del que edifica su casa sin justicia(S)
y sus aposentos altos sin derecho,
que a su prójimo hace trabajar de balde
y no le da su salario(T).
14 El que dice: «Me edificaré una casa espaciosa
con amplios aposentos altos(U)»;
y le abre[e] ventanas,
la recubre de cedro(V) y la pinta de rojo[f].
15 ¿Acaso te harás rey porque compites en cedro?
¿No comió y bebió tu padre
y practicó el derecho y la justicia(W)?
Por eso le fue bien(X).
16 Defendió la causa del pobre y del necesitado(Y);
entonces le fue bien.
¿No es esto conocerme?
—declara el Señor(Z).
17 Mas tus ojos y tu corazón
solo están para tu propia ganancia(AA),
para derramar sangre inocente(AB),
y para practicar la opresión y la violencia[g].
18 Por tanto, así dice el Señor acerca de Joacim(AC), hijo de Josías, rey de Judá:
No llorarán por él(AD):
«¡Ay, hermano mío(AE)!» o «¡Ay, hermana!».
No llorarán por él:
«¡Ay, señor!» o «¡Ay, su gloria!».
19 Con entierro de asno, será enterrado(AF):
arrastrado y tirado fuera de las puertas de Jerusalén.
20 Sube al Líbano y clama,
y da voces[h] en Basán;
clama también desde Abarim(AG),
porque han sido destruidos todos tus amantes(AH).
21 Te hablé en tu prosperidad,
pero dijiste: «No escucharé».
Esta ha sido tu costumbre desde tu juventud,
que nunca has escuchado mi voz(AI).
22 A todos tus pastores(AJ) arrasará[i] el viento,
y tus amantes irán al cautiverio(AK);
entonces ciertamente serás avergonzada y humillada(AL)
a causa de toda tu maldad.
23 Tú que moras en el Líbano,
anidada en los cedros,
¡cómo gemirás cuando te vengan los dolores,
dolor como de mujer de parto(AM)!
24 Vivo yo —declara el Señor— aunque Conías[j], hijo de Joacim, rey de Judá(AN), fuera un anillo[k] en mi mano(AO) derecha, aun de allí lo[l] arrancaría. 25 Te entregaré en manos de los que buscan tu vida, sí, en manos de los que temes: en manos de Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia(AP), y en manos de los caldeos. 26 Te arrojaré(AQ) a ti y a la madre(AR) que te dio a luz a otro país donde no nacisteis, y allí moriréis. 27 Pero a la tierra a la cual con toda el alma anhelan volver, a ella no volverán.
28 ¿Es acaso este hombre Conías una vasija despreciada y rota?
¿Es un objeto indeseable(AS)?
¿Por qué han sido arrojados él y sus descendientes(AT)
y echados a una tierra que no conocían(AU)?
29 ¡Oh tierra, tierra, tierra!,
oye la palabra del Señor(AV).
30 Así dice el Señor:
«Inscribid a este hombre como sin hijos(AW),
hombre que no prosperará en sus días;
porque ninguno de sus descendientes logrará[m](AX)
sentarse sobre el trono de David(AY)
ni gobernar de nuevo en Judá».

Juicio contra reyes malvados
22 Así dice el Señor: «Baja al palacio del rey de Judá y proclama allí este mensaje: 2 “Escuchen la palabra del Señor, tú, rey de Judá, que estás sentado sobre el trono de David, tus oficiales y tu pueblo, que entran por estas puertas. 3 Así dice el Señor: ‘Practiquen el derecho y la justicia. Libren al oprimido del poder del opresor. No maltraten ni hagan violencia al extranjero, ni al huérfano ni a la viuda, ni derramen sangre inocente en este lugar. 4 Si tienen cuidado de cumplir estos mandamientos, entonces por las puertas de este palacio entrarán reyes que ocuparán el trono de David; entrarán en carros y a caballo, acompañados por sus oficiales y su pueblo. 5 Pero, si no obedecen estas palabras, tan cierto como que yo vivo, que este palacio se convertirá en un montón de ruinas. Yo, el Señor, lo afirmo’ ”».
6 Porque así dice el Señor acerca de la casa real de Judá:
«Para mí, tú eres como Galaad
y como la cima del Líbano;
ciertamente te convertiré en un desierto,
en ciudades deshabitadas.
7 Enviaré contra ti destructores,
cada uno con sus armas,
que talarán tus cedros más hermosos
y los echarán en el fuego.
8 »Gente de muchas naciones pasará por esta ciudad y se preguntará: “¿Por qué habrá tratado así el Señor a esta gran ciudad?”. 9 Y se le responderá: “Porque abandonaron el pacto del Señor su Dios, adorando y sirviendo a otros dioses”».
10 No lloren por el que está muerto
ni hagan lamentaciones por él.
Lloren más bien por el exiliado,
por el que nunca volverá
ni verá más la tierra en que nació.
11 Así dice el Señor acerca de Salún,[a] hijo de Josías y rey de Judá, que comenzó a reinar después de su padre Josías y que salió de este lugar: «Nunca más volverá, 12 sino que morirá en el lugar donde ha sido desterrado. No volverá a ver más este país.
13 »¡Ay del que edifica su casa y sus habitaciones superiores
violentando la justicia y el derecho!
¡Ay del que obliga a su prójimo
a trabajar gratis y no le paga por su trabajo!
14 ¡Ay del que dice: “Me edificaré un gran palacio,
con habitaciones amplias en el piso superior”!
Y le abre grandes ventanas,
y la recubre de cedro y la pinta de rojo.
15 »¿Acaso eres rey
solo por acaparar mucho cedro?
Tu padre no solo comía y bebía,
sino que practicaba el derecho y la justicia;
por eso le fue bien.
16 Defendía la causa del pobre y del necesitado;
por eso le fue bien.
¿Acaso no es esto conocerme?»,
afirma el Señor.
17 «Pero tus ojos y tu corazón
solo buscan ganancias deshonestas,
solo buscan derramar sangre inocente
y practicar la opresión y la violencia».
18 Por eso, así dice el Señor acerca de Joacim, hijo de Josías, rey de Judá:
«Nadie lamentará su muerte ni gritará:
“¡Ay, mi hermano! ¡Ay, mi hermana!”.
Nadie lamentará su muerte ni gritará:
“¡Ay, señor! ¡Ay, Su Majestad!”.
19 Será enterrado como un asno;
lo arrastrarán y arrojarán
fuera de las puertas de Jerusalén».

20 «¡Sube al Líbano y grita;
levanta tu voz en Basán!
¡Grita desde Abarín,
pues todos tus amantes han sido destruidos!
21 Yo te hablé cuando te iba bien,
pero tú dijiste: “¡No escucharé!”.
Así te has comportado desde tu juventud:
¡nunca me has obedecido!
22 El viento arrastrará a todos tus pastores
y tus amantes irán al cautiverio.
Por culpa de toda tu maldad
quedarás avergonzada y humillada.
23 Tú, que habitas en el Líbano,[b]
que has puesto tu nido entre los cedros,
¡cómo gemirás cuando te vengan los dolores,
dolores como de parturienta!

24 »¡Tan cierto como que yo vivo —afirma el Señor—, aunque Jeconías[c], hijo de Joacim y rey de Judá, sea un anillo en mi mano derecha, aun de allí lo arrancaré! 25 Yo te entregaré en manos de los que buscan matarte y en manos de los que tú más temes; es decir, en poder de Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, y de los babilonios.[d] 26 A ti y a la madre que te dio a luz los arrojaré a un país que no los vio nacer y allí morirán. 27 Jamás volverán al país al que tanto anhelan volver».
28 ¿Es Jeconías una vasija despreciable y rota,
un objeto que nadie desea?
¿Por qué son arrojados él y su descendencia
y echados a un país que no conocen?
29 ¡Tierra, tierra, tierra!
¡Escucha la palabra del Señor!
30 Así dice el Señor: «Anoten a este hombre
como si fuera un hombre sin hijos;
como alguien que fracasó en su vida.
Porque ninguno de sus descendientes
logrará ocupar el trono de David
ni reinar de nuevo en Judá».

Dios castigará a los jefes de Judá
22 Dios me dijo:
«Jeremías, ve al palacio del rey de Judá, y anuncia allí este mensaje:
2 “Rey de Judá, oficiales del palacio y habitantes de Jerusalén, les pido que presten mucha atención a lo que Dios dice. 3 Él les ordena hacer el bien: proteger a los que son maltratados, cuidar al extranjero, al huérfano y a la viuda, y no matar al inocente. 4 Si de veras me obedecen, siempre habrá en Judá un rey de la familia de David. Sus ejércitos entrarán y saldrán por los portones de la ciudad, acompañados por el pueblo y sus gobernantes. 5 De lo contrario, les aseguro que este palacio será totalmente destruido”.
6 »Yo, el Dios de Israel, les digo a los que están en el palacio de Judá:
“Ustedes son para mí
tan especiales como el monte Galaad
y como las altas montañas del Líbano.
Pero voy a convertirlos en un desierto,
en una ciudad deshabitada.
7 Yo enviaré contra ustedes
un ejército para que los destruya,
y para que les prenda fuego
a sus bosques más hermosos.
8 ”Mucha gente de otras naciones pasará por aquí, y se preguntará por qué hice esto con esta gran ciudad. 9 Y la respuesta será que ustedes adoraron a otros dioses y no cumplieron con mi pacto.
10-12 ”No lloren ni se pongan tristes
por la muerte del rey Josías.
Lloren más bien por su hijo Salum
que será llevado a otro país.
Allí lo tratarán como esclavo,
y nunca más volverá a ver
la tierra donde nació”.
»Y yo declaro que Salum nunca más volverá a ver este país, pues morirá en el lugar al que será llevado».
Y así sucedió. Tiempo después, tras la muerte de su padre Josías, Salum llegó a ser rey de Judá, pero se lo llevaron a Babilonia.
Advertencia contra el rey Joacín
13-14 Dios continuó diciendo:
«En cuanto al rey Joacín, tengo algo que decirle:
“¡Qué mal te irá, Joacín!
Edificas tu casa con mucho lujo;
piensas ponerle grandes ventanas,
y recubrirlas con finas maderas.
Pero maltratas a los trabajadores,
y para colmo no les pagas.
15 Te crees un gran rey
porque vives en lujosos palacios.
”Tu padre Josías disfrutó de la vida
y celebró grandes fiestas,
pero siempre actuó con justicia.
16 Protegió al pobre y al necesitado,
y por eso le fue bien en todo.
¡A eso le llamo conocerme!
17 ”A ti sólo te interesa el dinero
y no te importa cómo lo ganes.
Con gran violencia robas
y matas a gente inocente.
18 ”Por eso estoy enojado contigo.
Cuando te mueras,
nadie llorará por ti;
ningún israelita se pondrá triste
de que ya no seas su rey.
19 Morirás como los animales:
te arrastrarán por todo Jerusalén
y te arrojarán fuera de la ciudad”».
Advertencia contra Jerusalén
20 Dios también les dijo a los habitantes de Jerusalén:
«¡Vayan por todo el país;
suban a las montañas más altas,
y lloren desconsolados!
Los países que iban a ayudarlos
ya han sido destruidos.
21 »Cuando les iba bien,
les advertí del peligro,
pero no me hicieron caso.
¡Siempre han sido rebeldes!
22-23 »Los que ahora viven en el palacio,
rodeados de finas maderas,
¡pronto sabrán lo que es sufrir!
Cuando les llegue la desgracia,
sabrán lo que es el dolor.
Serán llevados a otro país,
y allí serán tratados como esclavos.
Las naciones en las que ellos confiaron
sufrirán el mismo castigo».
Advertencia contra Joaquín
24 Dios le dio este mensaje a Joaquín:
«Tú eres hijo de Joacín,
y ahora reinas en Judá.
Aunque te quiero mucho,
juro que te expulsaré de aquí.
25 Te entregaré en manos
del rey de Babilonia y de su ejército,
y temblarás de miedo.
26-27 A ti y a tu madre los enviaré
a un país extranjero.
Aunque quieran volver a Israel,
nunca más volverán,
porque morirán en ese país».
28-29 Dios continuó diciendo:
«¡Israelitas,
escuchen mis palabras!
Joaquín no sirve para nada;
es como una vasija rota.
¿Para qué lo quieren expulsar del país,
junto con todos sus familiares?
Por gente como ésa
no vale la pena preocuparse.
30 Yo, el Dios de Israel, les digo:
“Bórrenlo de su memoria,
es un hombre fracasado.
¡Ninguno de sus hijos
llegará a ser rey de Judá!”»

22 The Lord said, “Jeremiah, go down to the king’s palace. Go to the king of Judah and tell this message there: 2 ‘Listen to this message from the Lord, King of Judah. You rule from David’s throne, so listen. King, you and your officials must listen well. All of your people who come through the gates of Jerusalem must listen to the message from the Lord. 3 This is what the Lord says: Do what is right and fair. Protect those who have been robbed from the ones who robbed them. Don’t hurt or do anything wrong to orphans or widows. Don’t kill innocent people. 4 If you obey these commands, kings who sit on David’s throne will continue to come through the gates into the city of Jerusalem. They will come through the gates with their officials. The kings, their officials, and their people will come riding in chariots and on horses. 5 But I, the Lord, tell you that if you don’t obey these commands, then I promise with an oath in my own name that this king’s palace will be destroyed—it will become a pile of rocks.’”
6 This is what the Lord says about the palace where the king of Judah lives:
“The palace is tall like the forests of Gilead,
like the mountains of Lebanon.
But I will make it like a desert,
as empty as a city where no one lives.
7 I will send men to destroy the palace,
each armed with weapons.
They will cut up your strong, beautiful cedar beams
and throw them into the fire.
8 “People from many nations will pass by this city. They will ask one another, ‘Why has the Lord done such a terrible thing to Jerusalem? Jerusalem was such a great city.’ 9 This will be the answer to that question: ‘God destroyed Jerusalem because the people of Judah stopped following the agreement of the Lord their God. They worshiped and served other gods.’”
Judgment Against King Jehoahaz
10 Don’t cry for the king who has died.[a]
Don’t cry for him.
But cry very hard for the king
who must leave this place.[b]
Cry for him because he will never return
or see his homeland again.
11 This is what the Lord says about Jehoahaz[c] son of Josiah, who became king of Judah after his father Josiah died: “Jehoahaz has gone away from Jerusalem. He will never return. 12 Jehoahaz will die in the place where the Egyptians have taken him, and he will not see this land again.”
Judgment Against King Jehoiakim
13 “It will be very bad for King Jehoiakim.
He is doing wrong so that he can build his palace.
He is cheating people so that he can build rooms upstairs.
He is not paying his own people.
He is making them work for nothing.
14 “Jehoiakim says,
‘I will build myself a great palace, with huge rooms upstairs.’
So he built it with large windows.
He used cedar wood for paneling, and he painted it red.
15 “Jehoiakim, having a lot of cedar in your house
does not make you a great king.
Your father Josiah was satisfied to have food and drink.
He did what was right and fair,
so everything went well for him.
16 Josiah helped poor and needy people,
so everything went well for him.
Jehoiakim, what does it mean “to know God”?
It means living right and being fair.
That is what it means to know me.
This message is from the Lord.
17 “Jehoiakim, your eyes look only for what benefits yourself.
You are always thinking about getting more for yourself.
You are willing to kill innocent people.
You are willing to steal things from other people.”
18 So this is what the Lord says to King Jehoiakim son of Josiah:
“The people of Judah will not cry for Jehoiakim.
They will not say to each other, ‘Brother, I am so sad!
Sister, I am so sad!’
They will not cry for Jehoiakim.
They will not say about him, ‘Master, I am so sad!
King, I am so sad!’
19 The people of Jerusalem will bury Jehoiakim like a donkey.
They will drag his body away and throw it outside the gates of Jerusalem.
20 “Judah, go up to the mountains of Lebanon and cry out.
Let your voice be heard in the mountains of Bashan.
Cry out in the mountains of Abarim,
because all your ‘lovers’ will be destroyed.
21 “Judah, you felt safe, but I warned you.
I warned you, but you refused to listen.
You have lived like this from the time you were young.
And from the time you were young,
you have not obeyed me, Judah.
22 Judah, the punishment I give will come like a storm,
and it will blow all your shepherds away.
You thought some of the other nations would help you.
But these nations will also be defeated.
Then you will really be disappointed.
You will be ashamed of all the evil things you did.
23 “King, you seem so safe in your palace of cedar.
It’s as if you live in Lebanon![d]
But when your punishment comes, you will groan.
You will be in pain like a woman giving birth!”
Judgment Against King Jehoiachin
24 “As surely as I live,” says the Lord, “I will do this to you, Jehoiachin son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah: Even if you were a signet ring on my right hand, I would still pull you off. 25 Jehoiachin, I will give you to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and the Babylonians. Those are the people you are afraid of. They want to kill you. 26 I will throw you and your mother into another country where neither of you was born. You and your mother will die in that country. 27 Jehoiachin, you will want to come back to your land, but you will never be allowed to come back.”
28 Jehoiachin is like a broken pot that someone threw away.
He is like a pot that no one wants.
Why will Jehoiachin and his children be thrown out
and sent away into a foreign land?
29 Land, land, land of Judah!
Listen to this message from the Lord!
30 The Lord says, “Write this down about Jehoiachin:
‘He does not have children anymore!
Jehoiachin will not be successful
because none of his children will sit on the throne of David.
None of his children will rule in Judah.’”

22 This is what the Lord says: “Go down to the palace of the king(A) of Judah and proclaim this message there: 2 ‘Hear(B) the word of the Lord to you, king of Judah, you who sit on David’s throne(C)—you, your officials and your people who come through these gates.(D) 3 This is what the Lord says: Do what is just(E) and right. Rescue from the hand of the oppressor(F) the one who has been robbed. 6 For this is what the Lord says about the palace of the king of Judah:
“Though you are like Gilead(L) to me,
like the summit of Lebanon,(M)
I will surely make you like a wasteland,(N)
like towns not inhabited.
7 I will send destroyers(O) against you,
each man with his weapons,
and they will cut(P) up your fine cedar beams
and throw them into the fire.(Q)
8 “People from many nations will pass by this city and will ask one another, ‘Why has the Lord done such a thing to this great city?’(R) 9 And the answer will be: ‘Because they have forsaken the covenant of the Lord their God and have worshiped and served other gods.(S)’”
10 Do not weep for the dead(T) king or mourn(U) his loss;
rather, weep bitterly for him who is exiled,
because he will never return(V)
nor see his native land again.
11 For this is what the Lord says about Shallum[a](W) son of Josiah, who succeeded his father as king of Judah but has gone from this place: “He will never return. 12 He will die(X) in the place where they have led him captive; he will not see this land again.”
13 “Woe(Y) to him who builds(Z) his palace by unrighteousness,
his upper rooms by injustice,
making his own people work for nothing,
not paying(AA) them for their labor.
14 He says, ‘I will build myself a great palace(AB)
with spacious upper rooms.’
So he makes large windows in it,
panels it with cedar(AC)
and decorates it in red.(AD)
15 “Does it make you a king
to have more and more cedar?
Did not your father have food and drink?
He did what was right and just,(AE)
so all went well(AF) with him.
16 He defended the cause of the poor and needy,(AG)
and so all went well.
Is that not what it means to know(AH) me?”
declares the Lord.
17 “But your eyes and your heart
are set only on dishonest gain,(AI)
on shedding innocent blood(AJ)
and on oppression and extortion.”(AK)
18 Therefore this is what the Lord says about Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah:
“They will not mourn(AL) for him:
‘Alas, my brother! Alas, my sister!’
They will not mourn for him:
‘Alas, my master! Alas, his splendor!’
19 He will have the burial(AM) of a donkey—
dragged away and thrown(AN)
outside the gates of Jerusalem.”
20 “Go up to Lebanon and cry out,(AO)
let your voice be heard in Bashan,(AP)
cry out from Abarim,(AQ)
for all your allies(AR) are crushed.
21 I warned you when you felt secure,(AS)
but you said, ‘I will not listen!’
This has been your way from your youth;(AT)
you have not obeyed(AU) me.
22 The wind(AV) will drive all your shepherds(AW) away,
and your allies(AX) will go into exile.
Then you will be ashamed and disgraced(AY)
because of all your wickedness.
23 You who live in ‘Lebanon,[b](AZ)’
who are nestled in cedar buildings,
how you will groan when pangs come upon you,
pain(BA) like that of a woman in labor!
24 “As surely as I live,” declares the Lord, “even if you, Jehoiachin[c](BB) son of Jehoiakim king of Judah, were a signet ring(BC) on my right hand, I would still pull you off. 25 I will deliver(BD) you into the hands of those who want to kill you, those you fear—Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and the Babylonians.[d] 26 I will hurl(BE) you and the mother(BF) who gave you birth into another country, where neither of you was born, and there you both will die. 27 You will never come back to the land you long to return(BG) to.”
28 Is this man Jehoiachin(BH) a despised, broken pot,(BI)
an object no one wants?
Why will he and his children be hurled(BJ) out,
cast into a land(BK) they do not know?
29 O land,(BL) land, land,
hear the word of the Lord!
30 This is what the Lord says:
“Record this man as if childless,(BM)
a man who will not prosper(BN) in his lifetime,
for none of his offspring(BO) will prosper,
none will sit on the throne(BP) of David
or rule anymore in Judah.”
