Profecía contra Pasur
20 Cuando el sacerdote Pasur, hijo de Imer(A), que era el oficial principal(B) en la casa del Señor, oyó a Jeremías profetizar estas cosas, 2 hizo[a] azotar(C) al profeta Jeremías y lo puso en el cepo(D) que estaba en la puerta superior de Benjamín(E), la cual conducía a la casa del Señor. 3 Y[b] al día siguiente, cuando Pasur soltó a Jeremías del cepo, Jeremías le dijo: No es Pasur el nombre con que el Señor ahora te llama(F), sino Magor-misabib[c](G). 4 Porque así dice el Señor: «He aquí, te voy a convertir en terror para ti mismo y para todos tus amigos; ellos caerán por la espada de tus enemigos(H), y tus ojos lo verán. Entregaré a todo Judá en manos del rey de Babilonia, y él los llevará como desterrados a Babilonia y los matará(I) a espada(J). 5 También entregaré toda la riqueza de esta ciudad, todos sus productos y cosas de gran valor(K), y[d] todos los tesoros de los reyes de Judá, en manos de sus enemigos, que los saquearán, los tomarán y se los llevarán a Babilonia(L). 6 Y tú, Pasur(M), con todos los moradores de tu casa, irás al cautiverio y entrarás en Babilonia; allí morirás(N) y allí serás enterrado, tú y todos tus amigos a quienes has profetizado falsamente(O)».
Lamento del profeta
7 Me persuadiste[e], oh Señor, y quedé persuadido[f];
fuiste más fuerte que yo y prevaleciste(P).
He sido el hazmerreír cada día(Q);
todos se burlan de mí(R).
8 Porque cada vez que hablo, grito;
proclamo: ¡Violencia, destrucción(S)!
Pues la palabra del Señor ha venido a ser para mí
oprobio y escarnio(T) cada día.
9 Pero si digo: No le recordaré(U)
ni hablaré más en su nombre,
esto se convierte dentro de mí[g] como fuego ardiente
encerrado en mis huesos;
hago esfuerzos por contenerlo(V),
y no puedo(W).
10 Porque he oído las murmuraciones de muchos:
¡Terror por todas partes(X)!
¡Denunciadle, denunciémosle(Y)!
Todos mis amigos de confianza[h](Z),
esperando mi caída, dicen:
Tal vez será persuadido[i], prevaleceremos contra él
y tomaremos de él nuestra venganza(AA).
11 Pero el Señor está conmigo como campeón temible;
por tanto, mis perseguidores tropezarán y no prevalecerán(AB).
Quedarán muy avergonzados, pues no han triunfado(AC),
tendrán afrenta perpetua que nunca será olvidada(AD).
12 Oh Señor de los ejércitos, que pruebas al justo,
que ves las entrañas[j] y el corazón,
vea yo tu venganza sobre[k] ellos(AE),
pues a ti he encomendado mi causa(AF).
13 Cantad al Señor, alabad al Señor(AG),
porque ha librado el alma del pobre
de manos de los malvados(AH).
14 Maldito el día en que nací;
el día en que me dio a luz mi madre no sea bendito(AI).
15 Maldito el hombre que dio la noticia
a mi padre, diciendo:
¡Te ha nacido un hijo varón!,
haciéndolo muy feliz(AJ).
16 Sea ese hombre como las ciudades
que el Señor destruyó(AK) sin piedad[l];
oiga gritos de mañana
y alaridos[m](AL) al mediodía,
17 porque no me mató en[n] el vientre
para que mi madre hubiera sido mi sepultura,
y su vientre embarazado para siempre(AM).
18 ¿Por qué salí del vientre
para ver pena y aflicción(AN),
y que acaben en vergüenza(AO) mis días(AP)?

20 1-2 Cuando Pashur hijo de Imer oyó lo que el profeta Jeremías estaba predicando, ordenó que lo golpearan y lo metieran en la cárcel que estaba a un lado de la entrada de Benjamín, cerca del templo de Dios. 3 Sin embargo, a la mañana siguiente Pashur mandó que lo sacaran. Entonces Jeremías le dijo:
«Dios te va a cambiar de nombre. En vez de Pashur, te vas a llamar Magor-misabib, que quiere decir, “terror por todas partes”. 4 Porque Dios dice que tú serás un terror para ti mismo y para tus amigos. ¡Hasta verás cuando el enemigo mate a tus amigos! A todos los habitantes de Judá los entregaré al rey de Babilonia, para que se los lleve como esclavos a su país o para que los mate. 5 Además, a los enemigos de Judá les daré toda la riqueza de esta ciudad, junto con todos los tesoros de los reyes de Judá. Todo eso lo tomarán y se lo llevarán a Babilonia. 6 Y tú, Pashur, serás esclavo en Babilonia junto con toda tu familia. Allá morirás y serás enterrado; y lo mismo les pasará a todos tus amigos, a quienes les decías puras mentiras».
Protesta de Jeremías
7 Jeremías le dijo a Dios:
«Dios mío,
con lindas palabras me llamaste,
y yo acepté tu invitación.
Eres más fuerte que yo,
y por eso me convenciste.
»A toda hora
la gente se burla de mí.
8 Cada vez que abro la boca,
tengo que gritar:
“¡Ya viene el desastre!
¡Ha llegado la destrucción!”
No hay día que no me ofendan
por predicar tu mensaje.
9 »Hay días en que quisiera
no acordarme más de ti
ni anunciar más tus mensajes;
pero tus palabras
arden dentro de mí;
¡son un fuego
que me quema hasta los huesos!
He tratado de no hablar,
¡pero no me puedo quedar callado!
10 »La gente, en tono burlón, me grita:
“¡Hay terror por todas partes!”
También los oigo cuando dicen:
“¡Vamos a denunciarlo!”
Hasta mis mejores amigos
quieren que yo cometa un error;
buscan cómo ponerme una trampa
para derrotarme y vengarse de mí.
11-12 »Pero tú, mi Dios,
eres el Todopoderoso.
Tú examinas al que es justo
y sabes lo que pensamos y deseamos.
Eres un guerrero invencible,
y siempre estás a mi lado;
por eso no podrán vencerme
los que me persiguen;
¡quiero ver cómo los castigas,
porque en ti confío!
¡Quiero ver cómo los derrotas
y los pones en vergüenza!
¡Que nunca nadie se olvide
de que tú los derrotaste!
13 Alabemos a nuestro Dios,
porque él libera a los pobres
de las garras de los malvados.
14-15 »¡Maldito el día en que nací!
Maldito el que le dijo a mi padre:
“¡Te felicito! ¡Tuviste un hijo varón!”
16 ¡Cómo quisiera que ese tipo
terminara como las ciudades
que Dios destruyó sin compasión!
¡Quisiera que se vuelva loco de remate!
17-18 »¿Por qué tuve que nacer,
si vivo sólo para sufrir?
Si voy a morir humillado,
mejor hubiera nacido muerto.
¡Así mi tumba habría sido
el vientre de mi madre!»

Jeremiah and Pashhur
20 Pashhur son of Immer was a priest. He was the highest officer in the Temple of the Lord. When he heard Jeremiah say those things in the Temple yard, 2 he had Jeremiah the prophet beaten. And he had Jeremiah’s hands and feet locked between large blocks of wood. This was at the Upper Gate of Benjamin of the Lord’s Temple. 3 The next day Pashhur took Jeremiah out from between the blocks of wood. Then Jeremiah said to him, “The Lord’s name for you is not Pashhur. Now his name for you is ‘Surrounded by Terror.’ 4 That is your name because of what the Lord says: ‘I will soon make you a terror to yourself and to all your friends. You will watch enemies killing your friends with swords. I will give all the people of Judah to the king of Babylon. He will take them away to the country of Babylon, and his army will kill the people of Judah with their swords. 5 The people of Jerusalem worked hard to build things and become wealthy, but I will give all these things to their enemies. The king in Jerusalem has many treasures, but I will give all the treasures to the enemy. The enemy will take them and carry them away to the country of Babylon. 6 And, Pashhur, you and all the people living in your house will be taken away. You will be forced to go and live in the country of Babylon. You will die in Babylon, and you will be buried in that foreign country. You told lies to your friends. You said these things would not happen. But all your friends will also die and be buried in Babylon.’”
Jeremiah’s Fifth Complaint
7 Lord, you tricked me, and I certainly was fooled.
You are stronger than I am, so you won.
I have become a joke.
People laugh at me and make fun of me all day long.
8 Every time I speak, I shout.
I am always shouting about violence and destruction.
I tell the people about the message that I received from the Lord.
But they only insult me and make fun of me.
9 Sometimes I say to myself, “I will forget about him.
I will not speak anymore in his name.”
But when I say that, his message is like a fire burning inside me!
It feels like it is burning deep in my bones!
I get tired of trying to hold his message inside.
And finally, I am not able to hold it in.
10 I hear people whispering against me.
Everywhere, I hear things that frighten me.
Even my friends are speaking against me.
People are just waiting for me to make a mistake.
They are saying, “Let us lie and say that he did something bad.
Maybe we can trick Jeremiah.
Then we will have him.
We will finally be rid of him.
Then we will grab him
and take our revenge on him.”
11 But the Lord is with me.
He is like a strong soldier.
So those who are chasing me will fall.
They will not defeat me.
They will fail.
They will be disappointed.
They will be ashamed,
and they will never forget that shame.
12 Lord All-Powerful, you test good people.
You look deeply into a person’s mind.
I told you my arguments against these people.
So let me see you give them the punishment they deserve.
13 Sing to the Lord!
Praise the Lord!
He saves the lives of the poor!
He saves them from the wicked!
Jeremiah’s Sixth Complaint
14 Curse the day that I was born!
Don’t bless the day my mother had me.
15 Curse the man who told my father the news that I was born.
“It’s a boy!” he said.
“You have a son.”
He made my father very happy
when he told him the news.
16 Let that man be like the cities the Lord destroyed.[a]
He had no pity on them.
Let him hear shouts of war in the morning;
let him hear battle cries at noontime,
17 because he did not kill me
while I was in my mother’s womb.
If he had killed me then,
my mother would have been my grave,
and I would not have been born.
18 Why did I have to come out of her body?
All I have seen is trouble and sorrow,
and my life will end in shame.
