²¹ Since my people are crushed,^(A) I am crushed;
    I mourn,^(B) and horror grips me.
²² Is there no balm in Gilead?^(C)
    Is there no physician^(D) there?
Why then is there no healing^(E)
    for the wound of my people?

⁴ Therefore I said, “Turn away from me;
    let me weep^(A) bitterly.
Do not try to console me
    over the destruction of my people.”^(B)

¹¹ My eyes fail from weeping,^(A)
    I am in torment within^(B);
my heart^(C) is poured out^(D) on the ground
    because my people are destroyed,^(E)
because children and infants faint^(F)
    in the streets of the city.

²⁶ Put on sackcloth,^(A) my people,
    and roll in ashes;^(B)
mourn with bitter wailing^(C)
    as for an only son,^(D)
for suddenly the destroyer^(E)
    will come upon us.

⁴⁸ Streams of tears^(A) flow from my eyes^(B)
    because my people are destroyed.^(C)

⁴⁹ My eyes will flow unceasingly,
    without relief,^(D)

¹⁸ The hearts of the people
    cry out to the Lord.^(A)
You walls of Daughter Zion,^(B)
    let your tears^(C) flow like a river
    day and night;^(D)
give yourself no relief,
    your eyes no rest.^(E)

¹⁹ Arise, cry out in the night,
    as the watches of the night begin;
pour out your heart^(F) like water
    in the presence of the Lord.^(G)
Lift up your hands^(H) to him
    for the lives of your children,
who faint^(I) from hunger
    at every street corner.
