⁴⁴ He who flees from the terror
    shall fall into the pit,
and he who climbs out of the pit
    shall be caught in the snare.
^(A)For I will bring these things upon Moab,
    the year of their punishment,
declares the Lord.

^{19     (A)}as if a man fled from a lion,
    and a bear met him,
or went into the house and leaned his hand against the wall,
    and a serpent bit him.

²¹ Even her hired soldiers in her midst
    are like ^(A)fattened calves;
yes, they have turned and fled together;
    they did not stand,
for the day of their calamity has come upon them,
    ^(B)the time of their punishment.

⁴ The best of them is ^(A)like a brier,
    the most upright of them a thorn hedge.
The day of ^(B)your watchmen, of your punishment, has come;
    ^(C)now their confusion is at hand.

^14 (A)Flight shall perish from the swift,
    ^(B)and the strong shall not retain his strength,
    ^(C)nor shall the mighty save his life;
¹⁵ he who handles the bow shall not stand,
    and he who is ^(D)swift of foot shall not save himself,
    ^(E)nor shall he who rides the horse save his life;
