⁶ You go, therefore, and read from the scroll which you have written ^[a]at my instruction, the words of the Lord, in the hearing of the people in the Lord’s house on ^(A)the day of fasting. And you shall also read them in the hearing of all Judah who come from their cities.

⁸ And Baruch the son of Neriah did according to all that Jeremiah the prophet commanded him, reading from the book the words of the Lord in the Lord’s house.

⁹ Now it came to pass in the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, in the ninth month, that they proclaimed a fast before the Lord to all the people in Jerusalem, and to all the people who came from the cities of Judah to Jerusalem.

² “Thus says the Lord: ‘Stand in ^(A)the court of the Lord’s house, and speak to all the cities of Judah, which come to worship in the Lord’s house, ^(B)all the words that I command you to speak to them. ^(C)Do not diminish a word.

² and say, ^(A)‘Hear the word of the Lord, O king of Judah, you who sit on the throne of David, you and your servants and your people who enter these gates!

^2 (A)“Stand in the gate of the Lord’s house, and proclaim there this word, and say, ‘Hear the word of the Lord, all you of Judah who enter in at these gates to worship the Lord!’ ”

²⁹ “This shall be a statute forever for you: ^(A)In the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall ^[a]afflict your souls, and do no work at all, whether a native of your own country or a stranger who ^[b]dwells among you. ³⁰ For on that day the priest shall make ^[c]atonement for you, to ^(B)cleanse you, that you may be clean from all your sins before the Lord. ^31 (C)It is a sabbath of solemn rest for you, and you shall afflict your souls. It is a statute forever.

³ And He said to me: “Son of man, I am sending you to the children of Israel, to a rebellious nation that has ^(A)rebelled against Me; ^(B)they and their fathers have transgressed against Me to this very day. ^4 (C)For they are ^[a]impudent and stubborn children. I am sending you to them, and you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God.’ ^5 (D)As for them, whether they hear or whether they refuse—for they are a ^(E)rebellious house—yet they ^(F)will know that a prophet has been among them.

⁶ “And you, son of man, ^(G)do not be afraid of them nor be afraid of their words, though ^(H)briers and thorns are with you and you dwell among scorpions; ^(I)do not be afraid of their words or dismayed by their looks, ^(J)though they are a rebellious house. ^7 (K)You shall speak My words to them, whether they hear or whether they refuse, for they are rebellious.

^27 (A)“Also the tenth day of this seventh month shall be the Day of Atonement. It shall be a holy convocation for you; you shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire to the Lord. ²⁸ And you shall do no work on that same day, for it is the Day of Atonement, ^(B)to make atonement for you before the Lord your God. ²⁹ For any person who is not ^(C)afflicted in soul on that same day ^(D)shall be cut off from his people. ³⁰ And any person who does any work on that same day, ^(E)that person I will destroy from among his people. ³¹ You shall do no manner of work; it shall be a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwellings. ³² It shall be to you a sabbath of solemn rest, and you shall ^[a]afflict your souls; on the ninth day of the month at evening, from evening to evening, you shall ^[b]celebrate your sabbath.”

Paul’s Warning Ignored

⁹ Now when much time had been spent, and sailing was now dangerous ^(A)because ^[a]the Fast was already over, Paul advised them,
