⁶ So you go to the house of the Lord on a day of fasting^(A) and read to the people from the scroll the words of the Lord that you wrote as I dictated.^(B) Read them to all the people of Judah^(C) who come in from their towns.

⁸ Baruch son of Neriah did everything Jeremiah the prophet told him to do; at the Lord’s temple he read the words of the Lord from the scroll. ⁹ In the ninth month^(A) of the fifth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, a time of fasting^(B) before the Lord was proclaimed for all the people in Jerusalem and those who had come from the towns of Judah.

² “This is what the Lord says: Stand in the courtyard^(A) of the Lord’s house and speak to all the people of the towns of Judah who come to worship in the house of the Lord.^(B) Tell^(C) them everything I command you; do not omit^(D) a word.

² ‘Hear^(A) the word of the Lord to you, king of Judah, you who sit on David’s throne^(B)—you, your officials and your people who come through these gates.^(C)

² “Stand^(A) at the gate of the Lord’s house and there proclaim this message:

“‘Hear the word of the Lord, all you people of Judah who come through these gates to worship the Lord.

²⁹ “This is to be a lasting ordinance^(A) for you: On the tenth day of the seventh month^(B) you must deny yourselves^[a](C) and not do any work^(D)—whether native-born^(E) or a foreigner residing among you— ³⁰ because on this day atonement will be made^(F) for you, to cleanse you. Then, before the Lord, you will be clean from all your sins.^{(G) 31} It is a day of sabbath rest, and you must deny yourselves;^(H) it is a lasting ordinance.^(I)

³ He said: “Son of man, I am sending you to the Israelites, to a rebellious nation that has rebelled against me; they and their ancestors have been in revolt against me to this very day.^{(A) 4} The people to whom I am sending you are obstinate and stubborn.^(B) Say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says.’^{(C) 5} And whether they listen or fail to listen^(D)—for they are a rebellious people^(E)—they will know that a prophet has been among them.^{(F) 6} And you, son of man, do not be afraid^(G) of them or their words. Do not be afraid, though briers and thorns^(H) are all around you and you live among scorpions. Do not be afraid of what they say or be terrified by them, though they are a rebellious people.^{(I) 7} You must speak^(J) my words to them, whether they listen or fail to listen, for they are rebellious.^(K)

²⁷ “The tenth day of this seventh month^(A) is the Day of Atonement.^(B) Hold a sacred assembly^(C) and deny yourselves,^[a] and present a food offering to the Lord. ²⁸ Do not do any work^(D) on that day, because it is the Day of Atonement, when atonement is made for you before the Lord your God. ²⁹ Those who do not deny themselves on that day must be cut off from their people.^{(E) 30} I will destroy from among their people^(F) anyone who does any work on that day. ³¹ You shall do no work at all. This is to be a lasting ordinance^(G) for the generations to come, wherever you live. ³² It is a day of sabbath rest^(H) for you, and you must deny yourselves. From the evening of the ninth day of the month until the following evening you are to observe your sabbath.”^(I)

⁹ Much time had been lost, and sailing had already become dangerous because by now it was after the Day of Atonement.^[a](A) So Paul warned them,
